In a world filled with remarkable achievements, it takes something truly extraordinary to capture the attention of millions. Her achievement is a reminder that greatness is often born from the relentless pursuit of a passion, a message that resonates not only with aspiring Chefs but with anyone striving for excellence. In this exclusive sit down with Funke Babs Kufeji, she lets us in on the preparations and training that went into it and how the actual world record attempt went.
Today, I am PROUDLY Nigerian
Idon’t know if you all have noticed, but lately, it seems like Nigeria is constantly in global news headlines and for all the right reasons. For this, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of pride and optimism. I tell you, it sure feels so good to be a Nigerian right now. Despite the chaos and many challenges we face as a people, this somehow serves as a glimmer of hope shining through. Amid tension and uncertainty, we are witnessing Nigerians rising above the fray and making us proud globally. The other day it was the very talented Tems bringing home a Grammy Award and then the sensational Tiwa Savage making history while performing at the Coronation concert of King Charles III. This week it’s Hilda Baci and her incredible feat in the kitchen. Her yet-to-be-certified record of cooking non-stop for 100 hours received global recognition and garnered immense support from all Nigerians, regardless of age, status and tribe. So beautiful to see. Let’s also not forget Adeju Thompson, the face behind the fashion brand Lagos Space Programme, who recently claimed the prestigious Woolmark Prize with a cash prize of 134,000 USD, cementing his position as an innovator in the fashion world. These victories are not just about one brand; they symbolise the triumph of Nigerian craftsmanship, design, and artistic expression. They also testify to our ability to compete globally and reaffirm our position as a force to be reckoned with.
I have often heard my non-Nigerian friends say Nigerians are usually the loudest people in the room, my response to them? “We never start, una go hear am. “

For me, what makes it even better is that don’t believe these incredible achievements are isolated incidents. They indicate a larger narrative - one that speaks to the resilience and unity that define us as Nigerians. In the face of adversity, we have always found ways to rise above and excel. It is in our DNA to persevere, innovate, and overcome obstacles that stand in our way.
So, as we bask in the glory of these accomplishments, let us not lose sight of the bigger picture. Let us channel this energy, this pride, and this unity towards making Nigeria great again. Our country is filled with immense potential - from the richness of our cultural heritage to the brilliance of our people; it is up to every one of us to contribute towards a brighter future. Let us celebrate our diversity and embrace the strength that comes from unity. Let us engage in constructive dialogue, challenge the status quo, and work together to create positive change. Only then can we truly harness our potential and propel Nigeria to new heights. And for today? Let’s all embrace the pride and optimism that currently fills our hearts and continue to showcase the best of Nigeria to the world. Congratulations, everyone and Cheers to the loudest people on Earth.

IT’S ALL ABOUT YOUR SHOES
Most times, people are particular about what they wear but forget the goal when getting dressed: looking good. What most people don’t realise is that your shoes are the most important part of an outfit because they’re the first thing most people notice when they meet you for the first time. A pair of shoes says a lot about the wearer. Shoes are the most important foundation of any outfit because they can either make or break your look.
By Funke Babs-Kufeji
1. It’s all about making a statement.
If you care about how people see you, then matching your outfit to the right pair of shoes should be important to you. Your shoes should speak volumes, and the only way to do that is to buy them from reputable retailers with quality shoes and top-notch designs.
2. Shoes indicate your status.
Shoes, as we already know, can tell a lot about who you are, which is why, throughout history, shoes have always been a status symbol. Wearing good shoes is a given but wearing the right shoes for the right occasion is paramount. Make sure you wear the right shoes with the right outfit to the right place, at every given time because it says a lot about your status symbol.
3. Your shoes represent attention to detail.
Now that we know your shoes say a lot about you and wearing the right shoes with the right outfit is paramount, this only means one thing to those you come across. It shows that you are someone who pays attention to details and who doesn’t love those who put in the extra effort.
4. Expensive doesn’t always mean fashionable. Don’t get it wrong; expensive doesn’t always mean fashionable, and this does not mean buying cheap, low-quality shoes either. Instead, go for shoes that look good and are, of course, of good quality. Most importantly, make sure the shoes are made for walking. Comfortable!
5. Your shoes say a lot about you. Your shoes are often a great way to announce your personality and identity. Most of you might not like the sound of this, but they most often broadcast your aspirations. Many celebs wear uncomfortable designer shoes, but to look the part of being a celeb, they hold up in them for long hours. This applies to men as well. Many men don’t play basketball, yet you see so many of them in trainers worn by stars, which often indicates they aspire to be rich, famous, etc.
Now that you know how shoes play a pivotal role in making you look fashionable, we are sure that when you buy your next pair of shoes, you will choose wisely and remember: quality over quantity

While the record is still under review by the Guinness Book, the awe-inspiring support she received from Nigerians throughout this incredible endeavour is a testament to her determination and the potential impact it holds for the culinary industry in Nigeria. Beyond the attention-grabbing headlines, Hilda’s gruelling culinary marathon symbolises something much deeper: the embodiment of discipline and commitment.
Congratulations, Hilda! You have done an amazing job. Could you please share with us how you first discovered your passion for cooking and what inspired you to pursue it professionally?
Thank you so much for your kind words. My passion for cooking started at a very young age. have always been fascinated by the sights, sounds, and smells of my mother’s kitchen. Watching her effortlessly prepare delicious meals inspired me to pursue a career as a chef and open a restaurant called My Food by Hilda. This has given me a chance to better hone my cooking skills. The joy of bringing people together through food and the ability to express my creativity in the kitchen fueled my determination to make a career out of it and also teach others to cook.
So why did you decide to break the Guinness World Record for the ‘longest cooking time? Not a lot of people would consider attempting this.
Breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking time was a decision born out of my desire to push the boundaries and showcase the dedication and resilience required in the culinary field. wanted to challenge myself and inspire others to pursue their dreams fearlessly, even if it meant attempting something unconventional or seemingly impossible.
Cooking for 100 hours is not an easy feat. What were the preparations and training you went through before embarking on this journey to break the record?
The preparations and training for such a monumental challenge were crucial. I focused on building my physical stamina through regular exercise, strength and endurance training, and a balanced diet. I also engaged in rigorous meal planning, extensive research, and practice sessions to ensure I could manage my time effectively and handle the demands of continuous cooking for an extended period while following the set guidelines by Guinness World Records.
Could you take me through the process of mentally and operationally preparing yourself for such a monumental cooking challenge?
This was a 5-year dream. I have always been obsessed with Guinness World Records since I was a kid; however, identified the particular record I wanted to break 5 years ago.
I have always been fascinated by the sights, sounds, and smells of my mother’s kitchen. Watching her effortlessly prepare delicious meals inspired me to pursue a career as a chef and open a restaurant called My Food by Hilda. This has given me a chance to better hone my cooking skills.
Mentally preparing for the cooking marathon involved a combination of visualisation, meditation, and positive affirmations.
Operationally, when I conquered my mental preparation and knew I was ready to attempt to break the record, I spoke to my friend Nowe, whom met in 2022 at one of my physical cooking classes.
We became fast friends, and when I told her about it, she saw something bigger; she knew she couldn’t handle it alone. She went ahead and assembled a talented and efficient team and sold them the vision.
Additionally, I broke down the challenge into smaller milestones, staying focused on one step at a time rather than being overwhelmed by the enormity of the task.
What was the experience of the Guinness World Record attempt like? What was it like to cook continuously for such an extended period of
time?
The experience of attempting the Guinness World Record was both exhilarating and demanding. It tested my skills and my willpower. Cooking continuously for such a prolonged period required unwavering concentration and physical endurance. It was a true test of my resilience and determination. The support and motivation from my family and friends, my brother Gilbert, the team, supporters from all over, the performances, the energy, the visits, as well as the belief in my abilities, played a significant role in keeping me going throughout the process.
What were some of the dishes you prepared during this challenge, and did you get to taste any of them? If so, which was your favourite and why?
During the challenge, prepared a wide range of dishes, incorporating both local Nigerian flavours and international influences. Some of my favourites included traditional Nigerian delicacies like jollof rice, egusi soup, and suya, as well as international dishes with a unique Nigerian twist. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the challenge, I couldn’t taste all the dishes. As it got even more difficult, there were many times I couldn’t taste the meals, not because I did not taste them but because I was tired and my body kept telling me to shut down because I needed sleep. I am thankful for my sous chefs, Sunny and Lola, who stepped in when I could not. For the most part, I mostly drank smoothies. However, the aroma and positive feedback from those who did sample them were incredibly rewarding.
How many dishes or meals did you prepare in your attempt to hold the new record for the longest cooking time?
prepared a 40-course menu that covered an average of 300 dishes and fed an average of 5,000 people during the record attempt. It required a coordinated team. This team was spearheaded by the Vice President of CAPA Nigeria, Chef Gibbs Ade, who was the Culinary Director (as required in the Guinness World Record guidelines) for the Cookathon. His expertise ensured meticulous planning, effective time management, and preparation efficiency, which were all crucial to setting the record for the longest cooking time.
The support was overwhelming. How did that make you feel?
The overwhelming support received throughout this journey was truly heartwarming. It filled me with gratitude and a deep sense of responsibility to represent not only myself but also the Nigerian culinary industry. The encouragement and belief from my fellow chefs, food enthusiasts, and the public at large were instrumental in keeping my spirits high and reminding me of the impact could make.
What kind of impact do you believe your record will have on your personal brand as a chef and on the Nigerian culinary industry as a whole?
Achieving the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon in the world will hold immense significance for both my personal brand as a chef and restaurateur and the Nigerian culinary industry as a whole. It showcases the talent and creativity present within our culinary landscape and puts Nigerian cuisine on a global stage. By breaking barriers and highlighting the unique flavours of Nigerian cuisine, I hope to inspire more people to explore and appreciate our rich culinary heritage. From global recognition, media coverage, cultural appreciation, tourism and culinary experiences, to economic opportunities, the impact of the cookathon on the Nigerian culinary industry as a whole is significant and far-reaching.

THREE TIMES TIWA SAVAGE WOWED IN
LDA
Lanre DaSilva-Ajayi(LDA) is one of Nigeria’s biggest fashion exports to the world, and following the show-stopping dress she designed for Tiwa Savage’s performance at the King’s coronation concert in the United Kingdom, it is safe to say the designer and songstress have an affinity for making magic when they come together. Through her eponymous brand, Lanre is telling the African/Nigerian story through her love for the Victorian era with her designs. Her eye for design and her impeccable story-telling have resonated with not only the singer but people all over Africa, resulting in the brand’s latest collection being a big hit. Tiwa Savage truly is the epitome of the LDA woman, and here are three unforgettable looks.
By Funke Babs-Kufeji
GREEN WITH ENVY
At King Charles III’s coronation concert at Windsor Castle, Tiwa looked elegant and beautiful in a bottle green iridescent flowy dress, which was in some way a nod to the green on the Nigerian flag. This look is one the world will not too quickly forget, as everyone was in awe of how the dress was a match to her Nubian skin. It was stunning; Lanre designed the perfect dress fit for the occasion, and this further solidified Tiwa’s title as Queen of Afrobeats on that night.
PRETTY IN PINK
Didn’t we say LDA and Tiwa always create magic when they come together? On the Jimmy Fallon show in 2019, Tiwa was show-stopping in pink. We love that the designer always seems to create the right dress for Tiwa, and Tiwa shows off the designer’s prowess with the ease with which she gracefully embodies the outfit.
GO FOR GOLD
Tiwa already knows what works for her, which is why for major events where she needs to stand out, she goes to her maestro designer. This gold dress is sexy and fits like a glove, and now we see why the songbird always goes for an LDA fit to standout.

GLAMOUR FEVER: TIPS TO TURNING HEADS IN SEQUINS
By Shola-Adido Oladotun
Simplicity is key
The saying “less is often more” is very applicable to sequins. If you’re new to wearing sequins, start with the basics by incorporating small sequin details into your outfit. In other words, don’t just suddenly wear an avant-garde sequin gown; take things slow. You could opt for a sequin clutch or a pair of sequin heels to add a touch of sparkle to your look without going overboard. CHIO-
MA IKOKWU
The Colourful side of life
Silver and gold are the first colours that come to mind whenever the word sequins is mentioned. However, these classic colours should not make you scared about experimenting with different shades and hues. Sequins come in all sorts of colours, from pastels to neons, so consider trying out a unique colour to stand out from the crowd.
The best of both worlds
To avoid looking too flashy, it’s essential to balance your sequin outfit with more subdued pieces. For example, if you’re wearing a sequin dress, opt for simple accessories and shoes to keep the focus on your dress. On the other hand, if you’re wearing a sequin jacket or top, pair it with neutral pants or a skirt to tone down your look.
Choose the right occasion.
Sequins are match-made in the fashion world for special occasions like weddings, parties, and other formal events. However, they may not be suitable for more casual occasions like a day at the office or a trip to the grocery store. When deciding where and when to wear sequins, consider the occasion and dress code to ensure you’re appropriately dressed.
For your consideration...
…Try layering. It’s no secret that sequin pieces can add depth and texture to your look. Layering pieces like a blazer or fur coat elevates the sophistication level of a sequin dress or top.
Explore different types of sequins.
Sequins come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, from large and chunky to tiny and delicate. Rather than joining the thousand ladies around the world who opt for the common round sequins, consider trying out other types of sequins; square, teardrop, flower-shaped, holographic, matte to add variety and interest to your wardrobe.
All about silhouettes
Who said sequins always have to be in the form of a gown? Push the envelope further by incorporating sequins into a variety of silhouettes, from fitted and body-hugging to loose and flowy. A sequin jumpsuit or a sequin skirt with a high slit is enough to give your style the much-needed boost it needs.
Picture this: you are invited to a dinner party where the dress code is “dress to impress.” Obviously, this makes you anxious because you know a simple black dress or that floral print maxi dress in your wardrobe lacks the full potential to impress. So, you spend the entire day searching for the perfect dress, but your wardrobe is becoming a dead end.
Call us your fairy godmother because your worries are over as we present you with arguably the most glamorous fabric on earth: sequins! Whether you’re looking to add a touch of sparkle to your everyday wardrobe or want to turn heads on a special occasion, sequins are the perfect way to add a little glitz and glamour to your look. But with so many options out there, it can be challenging to know how to wear sequins without looking over the top. Here are some tips to help you master the art of wearing sequins and turning heads wherever you go.

The Glorious Mind of Femi Odugbemi
With a remarkable career spanning decades, Femi Odugbemi has captivated audiences with his thought-provoking narratives that delve deep into the human experience.
From award-winning documentaries to compelling TV series, his work resonates with authenticity and pushes boundaries, leaving an indelible mark on the industry. Vanessa Obioha writes about his extraordinary mind and unwavering commitment to his craft as he turns 60.
To be remotely acquainted with the cerebral filmmaker Femi Odugbemi is a desire pursued by many. Not necessarily because of his enviable success in the creative field, but rather because of the indomitable spirit and profound impact he leaves in his wake. With a career that spans decades across media, photography, advertising, filmmaking, and education, Odugbemi has established himself as a true visionary and a guiding light in the industry. Given his high status, one might assume that the man behind some of the intriguing TV drama series, such as ‘Battleground,’ had a silver spoon glued to his mouth. This is not the case. Odugbemi came from a humble background, and his early exposure to life’s intricacies tells a different story. Growing up in a modest home and helping his disciplinarian mother, whom he loves dearly, with her trade, sometimes hawking on the streets of Lagos, and encountering people from different walks of life, prepared him for the future. If one is privileged to be regaled with his childhood stories, one would understand why he is called the master storyteller. Was it when his mother seized the football during a game with peers? Or the elderly akara seller whose hot akara served with a stew made his hawking days eventful? Oh, was it the days spent in his mum’s kiosk where he had to multitask between watching over his mother’s goods and doing his homework?
As these stories spilled from his mouth, one can easily tell of the admiration he has for his mother and how her guidance and discipline moulded him into the man he is today.
While the Odugbemis may not have had the luxury of a wealthy life, education was highly prioritised. So when the time came for university, Odugbemi had to travel across the ocean. He attended Montana State University in the United States, where he studied film and TV production. Sitting in his office on a recent afternoon and reminiscing about those days, Odugbemi talked about his decision to return to Nigeria.
“It would have taken me nine months to get a green card and become a United States citizen, but I always knew didn’t want to stay in America. My mother tried and tried, but I didn’t budge. The Nigeria I grew up in has clarity; there were things think learned in school that made me have clarity that think is missing now. The only God in Nigeria right now is money. The only thing anybody thinks of is money. The only person to honour is money. The only person to listen to is money. If we can’t see you with money, we can’t see you at all.
“Now that kind of society is going down the drain at a fast speed. It has nothing to do with anyone. The only way to change that is for the moral and ethical gatekeepers, which are the churches, mosques, and the judiciary, to do their work properly.”
Odugbemi’s career picked up in advertising after a stint
at the Nigerian Television Authority. With his dreads and earrings, he cut the perfect picture of an Americana, a colloquial term used to describe a returnee from the States. On his first encounter with Christopher Doghudje, who helmed the affairs at Lowe-Lintas at the time, he was given six months of probation because, according to him, the elderly Doghudje had problems with his looks.
“He said to me that it was people who looked like me that hid our talents.”
By the third month, he was called to Doghudje’s office and was praised for his impressive work.
“In all honesty, I didn’t know my work was impressive. All knew was that I was using my mum’s car to do my advertising work.”
Odugbemi would serve as an agency producer for different advertising companies before becoming his own boss at DVWorx Studios, a platform that enabled him to serve as President of the Independent Television Producers Association of Nigeria between 2002 and 2006. Alongside his friends Jahman Anikulapo and Makin Soyinka, he founded the iREP Documentary Film Festival, which has become a rarefied environment for art enthusiasts and intellectuals to have conversations about Africa and the role documentary films play in the development of the continent.
A renowned storyteller, Odugbemi runs Zuri24 Media, a content and media creation company responsible for his latest works.
“His work ethic is phenomenal,” said the actress Shaffy Bello, who featured in his 2017 production ‘Battleground.’ “He is a master at his craft. He doesn’t second guess.”
A stickler for professionalism, during a visit to his ‘Battleground’ set in 2017 with a former editor of THISDAY newspaper, his work ethic was clearly evident. First, he acquired a property in Lekki to ensure that work flowed seamlessly. To maintain punctuality, every weekday, a bus filled with the crew and cast departed from the Maryland Bus Stop in Lagos on the mainland promptly at 5 a.m., destined for the Lekki Phase 1 location. Odugbemi strictly enforced a zero-tolerance policy for tardiness, regardless of the circumstances. At 7 a.m., breakfast was served, followed by shooting, which began at 8 a.m. and continued until late afternoon with a scheduled lunch break. The entire operation ran like a well-oiled machine, with meticulous attention to detail.
As a documentary filmmaker, he is known for works such as the 2016 ‘Makoko: Futures Afloat,’ which captured the young dreams trapped in the riverine slum in Lagos. That same year, he did a feature film, ‘Gidi Blues: A Lagos Love Story,” which tells about two young lovers whose love story is set in Makoko. The film was, in a way, a clarion call to appreciate the uniqueness of where we were born. Other documentary works from him include the award-winning ‘Bariga Boy’ as well as ‘Unmasked’, a 2021 documentary that explored Nigeria’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
On TV, he is known for being the pioneer producer of the longest-running TV series ‘Tinsel’, as well as other titles such as ‘Movement-Japa,’ ‘Brethren’ and his most current political drama series ‘Covenant.’
Beyond filmmaking, Odugbemi is a seasoned and cerebral writer, delivering thought-provoking papers on the art and business of storytelling. His expertise has been sought after at various conferences and events, where he shares insights on topics such as “Promoting a Learning Culture in Nollywood” during the inaugural graduation ceremony of KAP Film/TV Academy last year; and “Authenticity in African Storytelling,” at the 2020 Creative Producers INdaba held in South Africa.
Due to his brilliance and flair for grooming the next generation of filmmakers, he was the best choice to usher in the first set of students to go through the MultiChoice Talent Factory in Nigeria. To date, his time as the academy director is still sung in high praise. He also serves as the Provost of the Orange Academy and is a visiting academic at various schools both in Nigeria and abroad.
His influence extends to international film and TV award organisations, as he is a voting member of both the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. He has served as a juror and head of the jury at various film festivals. This year, he returned for the fifth time
Now that kind of society is going down the drain at a fast speed. It has nothing to do with anyone. The only way to change that is for the moral and ethical gatekeepers, which are the churches, mosques, and the judiciary, to do their work properly.
as the head of the jury for the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).
One cannot discuss Odugbemi without encountering a multitude of individuals whose lives he has touched and transformed, myself included. Whether through his captivating films, his inspiring mentorship, or his unwavering commitment to artistic excellence, Odugbemi has left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to cross his path.
When friends, colleagues, and mentees talk about him, their voices reverberate with admiration and respect.
Mr. Jahman Anikulapo, a long-time friend and renowned cultural critic, beautifully encapsulates Odugbemi’s essence, saying, “Femi Odugbemi is an octopus of influences. An Instigator. A Motivator. An Inspirer. A catalyst for progressive visioning and actions—these are the essences of the man, and you see them manifest in all his interventions.”
But it is not only Mr. Anikulapo who sings Odugbemi’s praises. Across the creative landscape, individuals like Bello, who said he was “one of the people God used to change my life” have been captivated by his extraordinary talent.
“Femi directed the very first TV commercial I wrote while I was at Rosabel,” said Fabian Adeoye Lojede, an actor, writer, filmmaker and creative entrepreneur. “We bonded for life shortly afterwards when he directed a car commercial I wrote for Toyota. This project took us around Nigeria as we searched for landscapes and rural settings. His love for this industry is as immense as his expertise.”
What people admire most about Odugbemi is his humanity and kindness. This has remarkably set him apart from his contemporaries. Regardless of social class or talent, he extends a helping hand and offers support to those in need.
Despite his serious look, Odugbemi has a good sense of humour and can be mischievous.
