DANGOTE REFINERY FUELING AFRICA’S FUTURE

On a momentous occasion that marked a significant milestone for Nigeria and the entire African continent, President Muhammadu Buhari commissioned the Dangote Refinery project. With Africa’s growing energy demands and vast oil resources, the Dangote Refinery sets a precedent for future mega-projects, spurring economic growth, job creation, and energy self-sufficiency across the continent.

New Beginnings…

For those of us who are pretty active on social media, I am sure this week; you came across the drama emanating from the latest United Kingdom Visa restrictions, which has banned international students, including Nigerians, from bringing their families into the country. The back-and-forth banter made me realise that the Japa movement isn’t just a one of trend, but it just might have morphed into a way of life for us. It isn’t so far-fetched to assume that every other day there’s a young Nigerian out there getting ready to board a flight out of the country with no plans to return. It’s a hard pill to swallow, but sadly it is our current reality. Now, even though it is somewhat understandable that the UK’s decision may have caused a lot of frustration and inconvenience, maybe we should take a moment to see the silver lining it presents and the opportunities it offers us as a nation. Perhaps it is high time we reconsider the Japa exodus and see this as a sign to redirect our energies towards building a better Nigeria at home.

For this reason, as we welcome a new administration tomorrow, am asking that we see it as an opportunity to reflect on the state of our great nation and embrace the hope that, again, we have been given another chance to work towards making it a better place to live, work, and thrive. As we all know, the path to progress is often challenging, and leaders face their most formidable tests during times of great expectations. This right here is why we should all let go of all rancour and extend our support to the new President bearing in mind that, at this point, unity is key. Only through unity can we overcome the hurdles ahead, transcending political, ethnic, and religious divisions to work towards a common goal—building a prosperous Nigeria.

Rather than seeking opportunities abroad, we can channel our energy, skills, and talents towards fostering economic development, innovation, and social change within Nigeria. By investing in our country, we can create an environment that not only attracts foreign investors but also retains our own brightest minds and talents.

can almost imagine a few people rolling their eyes as they read this, but the truth is that we have no choice but to keep trying. Nigeria is the only home we have. Ultimately, it will require a mindset shift where we prioritise long-term growth over immediate gratification and collectively work towards a brighter future for future generations. Given the challenges we face as a nation, it is understandable to have doubts and concerns. However, progress requires us to embrace hope and believe in our ability to effect positive change. Let us not be deterred by the magnitude of the task at hand but instead, be motivated by the potential rewards. Remember, nation-building is a collective effort. Each of us has a role in shaping the Nigeria we desire. Let’s give hope a chance again and support the new administration, holding them accountable, actively participating and, in our different ways contributing to a stronger, more prosperous Nigeria.

DANGOTE REFINERY COMMISSIONED

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday commissioned the 650,000 barrels per day Dangote refinery located at the Lekki free zone in Lagos. The refinery is set to produce Euro-V-quality gasoline and diesel, as well as jet fuel and polypropylene, and is expected to meet 100 percent of the Nigerian requirement for all refined products and also have a surplus of each of these products for export.

The pipeline infrastructure at the Newly

commissioned refinery is said to be the largest in the world, with 1,100 kilometres, and will handle 3 billion standard cubic foot of gas per day. Built by Africa’s richest person, Aliko Dangote, the massive complex is one of Nigeria’s single largest investments. It has a 435-megawatt power station, deep seaport, and fertiliser unit and should begin operations in June, with the first products expected on the market by August.

GET DEBIT CARDS THAT DOUBLE AS NIN CARDS FROM BANKS

The federal government has announced that Nigerians can now request a debit card from their banks that can double as a NIN card at no extra cost. Pro Pantami The Minister of Communication announced this on Wednesday in Abuja after approval was given at the meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC). Though the NIMC Act of 2007 only mandates Nigerians to have a National Identity number and not necessarily a card, demand for the cards has been on the increase, especially in rural areas where smart IDs are not easily accessible. To ease the demand, NIMC has partnered with the Central Bank of Nigeria to give debit cards, which can also double as NIN cards, to citizens who wish to have them.

UNITED KINGDOM (UK) SET TO

Contrarily, PhD students, whose courses usually last between 3 to 5 years and are very highly skilled, will be exempt from the ban.

This clampdown is coming amid growing concerns over the net migration into the UK, which skyrocketed to 1 million within a short period of time, prompting Tory MPs to ask the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, to take immediate action.

DANGOTE REFINERY

Fueling Africa’s Future

On a momentous occasion that marked a significant milestone for Nigeria and the entire African continent, President Muhammadu Buhari commissioned the Dangote Refinery project. Situated in the sprawling Lekki Free Zone near Lagos, Nigeria, this monumental venture is set to revolutionise the region’s oil industry. With a staggering capacity to refine 650,000 barrels per day (BPD), the Dangote Refinery is not only poised to become Africa’s largest oil refinery but also the world’s largest single-train facility. This visionary project, spearheaded by Nigerian business tycoon Aliko Dangote, holds immense promise for Nigeria’s economy and energy sector.

At a time when Nigeria, as Africa’s largest oil producer, heavily relies on imported refined petroleum products to meet domestic demand, the Dangote Refinery brings a glimmer of hope. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ascendancy to the presidency is the culmination of a remarkable journey, a testament to his incomparable political acumen, tireless dedication, and unwavering pursuit of progress.

ASIWAJU BOLA AHMED TINUBU A NIGERIAN

HOPE RENEWED

In another test of Nigeria’s democracy, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu rises as the country’s number one citizen. With unwavering resolve, he assumes the presidency, determined to chart a path through adversity, unite a divided nation, and usher in a future filled with promise.

As President Muhammadu Buhari approaches the role of the idle king in Tennyson’s Ulysses, one man’s shadow looms large along the corridors of power, waiting to step in - Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR); the man, who against all odds will tomorrow be sworn in as Nigeria’s President.

Not a young man himself, Tinubu is certainly not of the strength which in 1999 moved earth and heaven, but he is clearly strong in will and has demonstrated that he is willing to fight for what he believes in, despite any opposition. In his pivotal “emilokan” speech in Abeokuta last year - which many believed to have turned the tide in his favour during the APC primaries - then-candidate Tinubu said that his journey to the presidency has been a long one, during which he has paid his dues with time, toil and sweat. From the pro-democracy struggle of the mid-1990s to his relentless work in building people and establishing a formidable opposition, he is credited with wresting power from the all-powerful People’s Democratic Party in 2015, when according to him, he surrendered his rights that the APC might succeed.

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ascendancy to the presidency is the culmination of a remarkable journey, a testament to his incomparable political acumen, tireless dedication, and unwavering pursuit of progress. From his early days as an accomplished accountant, Tinubu swiftly carved a path in national politics, becoming elected as the senator representing Lagos West in 1992. Later, during his tenure as a two-term governor of Lagos State, Tinubu’s transformative initiatives and sweeping policies catapulted the state’s development, garnering widespread acclaim – and controversy. Throughout his political career, he has faced scrutiny and criticism on various fronts as his well-oiled political machine churned out diehard allies and formidable foes in equal measure. Decades-old allegations against him have died and been revived several times and even threatened to derail his life’s ambition to be President.

Additionally, he has faced criticism for his perceived dominance and control over political structures, with critics arguing that his influence has advanced what they believe to be his personal agenda above all else. These issues have fueled scepticism among some Nigerians about the integrity of Tinubu’s leadership. Therefore, a major task of his administration would be to work towards fostering a climate of accountability and good governance and restoring trust among the populace.

The 2023 elections are now over, and the battle is lost and won. In history, there are moments that define nations when the path forward seems uncertain, and the weight of expectations rests on the shoulders of one man. Tinubu’s journey here is a testament to his unwavering determination and resilience. He will now assume the burden of leadership, steering the nation through many headwinds towards a brighter future. In the spirit of unity and reconciliation, the new President must extend a hand across the aisle, demonstrating magnanimity in victory. Acknowledging the divisions and scepticism felt by people who did not support his candidacy, President Tinubu must strive to earn their trust and confidence. By fostering an inclusive approach to governance,

welcoming diverse viewpoints, and prioritizing the collective welfare of all Nigerians, regardless of tribe or religion, he can lessen cynicism and spread his message of renewed hope in his presidency. Only through a sincere commitment to national unity can Tinubu heal the wounds of a bitterly fought election and forge a path towards a future where the people can hope to live a better life in the place they call home. The unifier-in-chief must be a beacon of unity, inspiring Nigerians to look beyond their differences and work towards a common purpose.

From the mounting domestic and foreign debt to the thorny issue of petrol subsidy removal, the nation finds itself at a crossroads. As the world watches, the new President must confront these challenges head-on, armed with a vision and the political will to see it through. Our mounting debt profile is a spectre that looms over the nation, casting a shadow of uncertainty on its economic future. While easier said than done, the President will need to chart a course towards fiscal prudence, instituting measures that promote responsible borrowing and effective debt management. By ensuring transparency and accountability in financial matters, the incoming government can lay the foundation for sustainable economic growth and alleviate the burden of debt on future generations. Several countries, including Venezuela, Egypt and Sri Lanka, have faced social unrest when subsidies were unsustainable and became a strain on public finances. While designed to help the average citizen, these subsidies put significant pressure on their economies, leading to budget deficits and limited fiscal flexibility. In Nigeria, the removal of petrol subsidies, as recommended by international financial institutions, is a bitter pill to swallow for many and a decision fraught with social and political implications. The outgoing administration was well aware of this and simply kicked the can down the road for the next guy. Now, Tinubu must communicate the necessity of this step, assuaging the concerns of the populace by outlining a comprehensive plan that redirects the savings towards critical sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure development.

It is often said that tackling corruption is easier said than done, especially when political expediency becomes the primary concern for winning re-election. However, it is crucial for the new government to prioritize addressing corruption, which has become an insidious albatross hanging on our nation’s neck. Tinubu must lead by example by fostering a culture of transparency and accountability, obeying the rule of law, and strengthening anticorruption agencies. The incoming President can restore public trust, attract foreign investment, and create an environment conducive for doing business by raising competence over nepotism and rewarding excellence in public service.

From day one, President Tinubu should prioritize the safety and well-being of every Nigerian citizen. The gains of Nigeria’s Armed Forces over Boko Haram and ISWAP in the forests of the Northeast are clear and should not decrease through sudden policy changes that will take years to settle. In-country, however, the lull before the elections have now been broken by incessant attacks on villages in Kaduna, Plateau and Benue. To restore peace and create an enabling environment for growth and prosperity, addressing the root causes of internal insecurity, including poverty and unemployment, should no longer be up for debate. Not only that, increased regional cooperation is imperative if terrorism and cross-border banditry are to be finally eliminated. From Bamako to Ndjamena, the regional task force will require increased cooperation and leadership from its big brother, Nigeria.

As Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu takes the oath of office tomorrow, he embarks on a journey that will test his well-known resilience. For the incoming President, the road to May 29, 2023, has been long and arduous, but the challenges ahead are even more formidable. If the saying, uneasy lies the head that wears the crown is anything to go by, this will by far be his biggest test in a time of great expectations. As the dawn breaks on the eve of a new era, Nigeria stands at the precipice of change, awaiting what a Tinubu presidency might bring.

As Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu takes the oath of office tomorrow, he embarks on a journey that will test his well-known resilience.

TRENDS ON THE RED CARPET

The Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) is Africa’s most prestigious award ceremony, and every year we are in awe of how the stars show up and show out on the red carpet. Some are hits and some are misses, but one thing is for sure: each year, the red carpet comes with a few key trends that set the tone not only for the evening but for many more big nights throughout the year. While we hope some of your favourite actors and actresses got the awards they deserved, we at Style did what we do best and looked at a few of the trends that were set for the rest of the year at the AMVCA.

CUTOUT

Cutout dresses are classy and sexy. They are a great way to show off some skin without going over the top. With some of our favourite celebs stepping on the red carpet in cutout dresses, it’s safe to say they will continue to be statement pieces on the red carpet throughout the year.

ALL

WHITE EVERYTHING

Step aside, ladies; the men brought their A-game in their allwhite ensemble, showing us that all-white isn’t only for women but for men too.

FLOWER POWER

This year on the AMVCA red carpet, fashion was in full bloom, with flower appliques emerging as a trend. Yes! Flower motifs are inherently romantic and eyecatching, making them a natural choice to stand out on a red carpet.

RUFFLES

Though ruffles have been a fashion trend on the red carpet for a while, it was great to see how our celebs played with exaggerated ruffles on their dresses to make statement pieces worthy of mention on this trend list.

It’s a style rule that every star knows very well: When it sparkles, heads turn. Many stars showed up in bejewelled dresses that made them look every bit the stars that they are. Though the sparkly dress trend isn’t new to the red carpet, it’s always a thrill to see how much sparkle can go on a dress to make it show stopping.

RETURN OF THE BOW TIE

It’s good-bye to the tie and welcome back to the bow-tie. Though the bow tie saw a dearth in past years on the red carpet, it is definitely back and can be seen paired with tuxedos on the red carpet of this year’s AMVCA.

TEXTURE TUXEDO

Step aside classic tuxedos; the textured tux is having a moment right now. On the red carpet this year, the texture tuxedo was a favourite among the celebs, and we are so here for it. The stars spiced up their tuxedos with textures of sequins, crystals, velvet, damask, and so much more, and not only did they look dapper, but they set a trend for us all to push more boundaries with our fashion choices.

BALL GOWNS

The dramatic cinchand-flare waistline is making a comeback thanks to some real-life princesses who nailed the look on the red carpet. The look had taken a back seat in fashion for a while, but now it is back bigger and better. The likes of Toke and Chioma have shown us how to put this regal look together effortlessly.

METALLICS

The metallic trend has been a huge part of 2023, and it comes as no surprise to see metallic dresses on the red carpet. Eye-catching silver and gold hues were mostly the order of the day, but the standout green metallic LDA dress Zozibini Tunz wore confirmed that metallics in other hues are just as regal as the gold and silver hues.

GLOVES

Channelling their inner Marilyn Monroe, some stars showed up in elbow-length gloves. The subtle yet elegant accessory complements any gown and adds a hint of regalness to any look.

FEATHER FEVER

The feather trend took flight on the red carpet, as many ladies tapped into it this year. Though incorporating feathers into an outfit can be tricky on a regular day, in front of the camera on the red carpet, it’s all drama and luxury. Our favourite celebs seem to agree, sporting all manner of feathered gowns on the red carpet.

BOLD COLOURS

Colours such as red, green, blue, and orange will always trend at award shows as they are attention-grabbing and yet not too risky.
