arlier this week, I spoke to a friend of mine who is Ghanaian, and our conversation inevitably moved to politics and who our next president might be. Lately, it seems that’s what everyone is talking about. Nigerians are so on edge that it feels like we are all in this race together for the most coveted seat in the land. Social media is rife with news, opinions and outright propaganda from all sides. Suddenly, everyone is politically aware, and the information overload can at times feel overwhelming. On balance however, a politically conscious populace is a net positive for all of us, as everyone waits with baited breath for what 2023 will bring. My Ghanaian friend is of the opinion that Nigeria has lost its pride of place in Africa and genuinely can’t wait for us to regain it. I tell you, it was really heartwarming to see a foreigner express good wishes for our dear country. Indeed, many Africans are closely following our electoral process because our political stability is critical for the whole continent. Democracy has suffered serious setbacks across the continent, in the past few years with several coups taking place from Sudan and across the Sahel to Mali. So, Nigeria needs to get it right 2023. Our problems are many, but not intractable, and by every indication, the next president will have a lot to deal with from day one. Everyone is watching. For many Nigerians, the 2023 polls will present a critical opportunity to make this choice, hoping that their voices are heard and that their votes count. Question is: What are you doing to be part of this? We have been through a lot in recent years: a combination of two recessions, a pandemic and many bewildering policy decisions have pushed millions into poverty and many more on the edge. We therefore owe it to ourselves and future generations to join hands together in finding our place again. 2023 is a challenge as well as an opportunity for us to get back on track. It’s important to not just be a part of the conversation, but also a part of the process, by registering to vote, voting and raising our voices to protect the vote. It’s June already! Is it just me, or is anyone else surprised at how fast the year is going? It feels like we just said Happy New Year a month ago. For many there’s been some progress, others not so much. But don’t beat yourself up, it has been tough on all of us. I am taking stock and pushing ahead. Take this as your weekly reminder to make your days count. Be intentional about it and find joy in the little things. Here’s wishing you the best for the rest of the week. xxx

THE SABOR WAY

10

MAURICE SOKARI

Gone are the days when it was pretty challenging to find good places to dine and enjoy fantastic gourmet food. Lately, there has been an onslaught of new restaurants springing up daily while others humbly close their doors. At the same time, a few have stayed in business for the longest time and are still holding things down, considering the global shutdown caused by COVID-19 and its restrictions.

B

elonging to the last category, Sabor Restaurant is amongst the few who have not only provided incredibly tasty food alongside their signature cocktails, of course, but also provided an ambience that has been able to withstand the test of time. Located on Victoria Island, Lagos, Sabor Restaurant specialises in Thai, Italian, Seafood, European and Contemporary dishes. The kitchen is handled by the prolific Chef Nkesi, who is in charge of all the food expressions for the restaurant, being the Executive chef, but she also works closely with Chef Laraba, who has been filling the Head Chef position since 2020. From the main street, you can easily spot the Sabor signage right at the landing of the steps, with the entry door to the right. Walking into the nicely lit room felt so good because I knew every picture taken would pop. There is a terrace on the right illuminating a beautiful flood of natural light, and then I noticed the simplistic furnishing outside, just like it is inside. The overall vibe is very accommodating, to say the least. The decor is relatively minimal. There are some frames on the wall and, yes, an interesting set of orange-tinted lights on the ceiling at the centre of the room........ giving a classical touch! The somewhat spacey hall, which is said to seat about 45 persons simultaneously, happens to have a bar, neatly arranged wooden dining furniture and a long cosy couch at the corner that totally had my name written all over it. Settled in, I’m served a chilled glass of water with cubes and lemon diced in. Then I’m handed a menu which I perused for a few minutes. First of all, I am taken aback because I had never come across any of the cocktail names listed, being the old school guy that I am. I asked the waiter for his assistance, specifically requesting a lemony cocktail he helped with, by simply referring me to the cocktail menu and pointing out the “Barcode Fire”, which I signed off on. While waiting for my drink and deciding on the main to order, I take cognisance of the music playing in the background. It was so calming that I had to ‘’Shazam’’ and discovered the song was titled Midnight Swim by Brock Berrigan. For those of you who are into alternative music or generally just like good music playing while you eat, this could become your favourite spot.

A CHAT WITH

How did model management start for you? Well, I’ve been in fashion since my university days. I’m an Image Director and stylist, so I got to work with models. I got super curious and explored.

Score Board:

Why the name 90s Model Management? I draw inspiration from the 70s to 90s era. Not a lot of black models were given the opportunity to be seen and celebrated. I wanted that name to stick wherever I went. Celebrating every black model that didn’t get the chance to be seen, heard or remembered for their contribution to fashion. Whilst also celebrating the ones that shaped us into what we are today. These have also helped shape my idea in model management. What are some of the major challenges you’ve faced so far? Support! It’s one thing to be seen and heard; it’s another to gain supporters in the creative space. No matter how good you are, you either bend a knee or get out of line. You’re a young person working in the creative industry. Do people tend to look down or undermine you in any way? I grew up in a family where I had to be an adult real quick and pick up the pace in life. At 17, I was a growing stylist. I was pretty established and challenging older people in my industry, So I think I can handle myself. Especially when I have models walking exclusively for major brands like Dior, Prada, Celine, Gucci, Fendi, Valentino, Bottega, Paul smith, Chloe, Jil sanders, Dries van Noten, Dolce and Gabbana, Jean-Paul Gauthier, Loewe and so much more. I don’t think anyone can intimidate me with the presence of age or social status. In an industry where it seems Male models are harder to export, you keep placing models on some of the biggest runways. What’s your

Not too long ago, seeing black models on major runways – not to talk of Nigerian models – seemed like a miracle made in fashion heaven. Now, we see models of colour book exclusives, campaigns and editorials with some of the biggest brands in the industry. All these and more are the cumulative hard work of Model management companies, who give their all to the success of these models. 24-year-old Maurice Sokari started 90s Model Management, and within a short period, he and his team were able to book models for major fashion houses like: Dior, Prada, Fendi, Hermes, Bottega Veneta, Valentino, Celine and Givenchy while also appearing in major editorials such as Vogue, Farfetch and iD. This week, Ayo Lawal has a chat with him about starting a modelling management, running a business at a young age, and attaining this level of success in little time.

secret? No secret o! Just a lot of hard work plus smart work. I mean, I’m going to say this; I’m the first Boutique agency out of Africa to have three boys exclusive for Prada in the same season - With two of them being minors. It’s always a dream, no matter the show. However, it gets intense by the season and as the models grow. But as the saying goes, ‘it only gets better from here. How does this make you feel? I’m like a father here! I’m stoked! I’m overwhelmed with joy and pride. 90% of my discoveries are boys who need financial aid to make a new story for themselves and their families. We are giving them a true purpose - not one on the streets. So, it’s a major life-changing step for me as a Talent Agent. What do you consider before deciding to sign a model into your agency? Personality is key for us at 90s Model Management. We follow a single strain of DNA - It’s like a pattern here. Of course, the looks, feel, height, posture, and composure play a significant role in making up our clients’ perfect personality. As a model manager, you also manage people’s emotions. Seeing most models signed are on the younger side, how do you deal with this? I’ve grown to understand that there has to be a balance. My models come with tension, sometimes emotional drama, and tantrums. I try to listen to every one of them as much as possible. They rely on me to keep their secrets, and I also try not to fail myself or them. What should models know before they decide to sign into an agency? Read your clauses; contracts are key! Do not sign what you don’t

understand. Be open to learning and always keep an open heart to say a Big YES or a Resounding NO! No good agency will ask you to pay any fee to get signed by them. Is there anything you’d change about the Nigerian Modelling Industry? Agents should respect each other and be true to themselves. Living and coexisting without envy, hate or malicious thoughts clouding their judgement. I’d also like the Nigerian modelling space to gain the proper love and attention it should have. What should we expect from Maurice Sokari and 90s Model Management in the future? Something is coming - But I want it to be perfect! Being the only premium agent in Nigeria and the first exclusive mother agency in Nigeria cooperating with premier fashion players and clients all over the globe, it’s time to dive into full talent management. The details are still very hazy, but we are working on it day and night. Any final words? Modelling is an expression of self As much as we believe that models are human dolls meant to display products. Modelling is a career path You mustn’t do the conventional jobs like lawyering or doctoring to make it in life. Models are celebrities, too and

BLOOD SISTERS THE SERIES

Weeks after its release, Ebony life’s Netflix limited-series Blood sisters is still making waves within the entertainment circles and beyond. Set against the bustling backdrop of Lagos, it tells the story of two friends, Sarah and Kemi. Sarah is engaged to her dream man, Kola. However, their seemingly idyllic union has a dark side, and despite Kemi’s vocal misgivings, Sarah is determined to press on with the wedding. What follows is a heart-stopping series of catastrophic events marked by murder, love, betrayal and the test of friendship. Blood Sisters features a roll call of Nollywood’s finest, and AZUKA OGUJIUBA recently had a sit down with some of them to share their experiences on set

Kate Henshaw

Tell us about your character in the movie Blood Sisters? My character, Uduak, is a strong, fierce, no-nonsense woman. She is wealthy and believes there is nothing she cannot get done. I love her strength. She is a woman no one says no to

Do you think Blood Sisters perfectly portrays societal issues people are presently facing? Blood Sisters is relatable, real, and a reflection of the divide in society between the rich and the poor. It shines a light on these societal issues that people face daily.

me. I believe I did justice to the character.

How do you mitigate disagreements between yourself and the directors? With other actors on set? I mitigate disagreements between myself and the directors by not putting myself in a situation that will cause problems. Putting my point across respectfully and also listening to the other side. With other actors, it is the same way. I accord them all their respect, and I also expect the same. Do you have a specific ritual before you go on set? Before going on set, I pray to ask God for the talent He gave me to shine through, reading my script in detail, knowing my lines and the other characters I would relate with. I also discuss with the director as to the expectations of the character, and the rest will come together.

Tell us about your character? My character Uchenna is a mother trying to live through her daughter. She’s Igbo, a ‘wannabe’, and too carried away with having more money that she doesn’t see what is happening in her daughter’s relationship. I know a few Uchenna’s; finding her wasn’t difficult, and I had the most fun playing her, not a kind of role or age that I have played before.

Tell us about your character in the movie? Timeyin Ademola is a young woman yearning to be loved & understood by her family. She deals with a severe addiction to narcotics, she wants to save herself, but her family’s lack of emotional support leaves her looking for love in all the wrong places. She is relatable, fierce and a show stopper.

Blood sisters gave you your first break out role. How do you feel about this? I feel incredibly thankful to the network and grateful to God. For a long time, I’ve dreamt of the chance to play a character that makes a mark. Timeyin does this. She is the most authentic woman. She takes up space so unapologetically. I cannot wait for the world to meet her. What has the movie Blood Sisters resonated the most within you? One is that Nigerian filmmakers make a global statement by telling authentic African stories that travel the world. Two, the love and support amongst the cast and crew is palpable. Who is your favourite character in Blood Sisters, and why? King Udauk. I like to call her King - played by my on-screen mother, Kate Henshaw. She carries the role with such authority, and her outfits? Nailed it! Can you describe the process of bringing your character to life in movies? Timeyin was an addict. She is multidimensional, just like any normal person. This was a real issue that people face, so I did my research, I created a playlist of songs I imagined she’d connect to, and for each scene, I played what she wanted and how she intended to get it. So as many things I could add to make her real, I did. Prospectively, where do you see your career five years from now? I’d love to take on more roles that propel Nigerian living & life. I’d love to travel where the work is. I’d love to win an Oscar someday; if it happens In 5 years, great! Like Aunty Mo Abudu says, if you can think it, you can do it. I’m always roaring for a challenge.

It must have been a great experience. Tell us, how was it working with Ebonylife and Netflix? It was an unforgettable experience working on this project by Ebonylife & Netflix. It was professionally executed from the casting and auditions to the actual workflow. All the cast and crew brought their A-game to this project. What challenges did you face bringing your character to life? The only challenge I faced bringing the character to life was my being anxious about making sure she came across as true as possible. One of the directors, Biyi Bandele, made me watch a particular movie before we started to shoot so that I could understand what was required of

S yle

Nancy Isime

Tell us about your character and how you were able to bring it to life in the movie? My character Kemi is fierce and powerful. She is the kind of friend everybody needs. The ride or die kind. I was able to bring her to life by studying the character, doing some research, immersing myself in the role and, of course, following the directions of my directors.

If there was one thing the audience should take away from it, what would you want that to be? That true friendship exists. The movie Blood Sisters was shot during the Covid-19 pandemic, and it must have been very challenging. How were you able to surmount the challenges personally and on set? Ebonylife and Netflix put all safety measures in place, so we didn’t have to worry much. We also had to take tests quite often, so we were assured that we were near people who were negative for the virus. How was it working with Ebonylife and Netflix? Sensational! By far one of the best productions I’ve been on. Everything to make my job easier was in place. This series was quite tasking to shoot, but the only things I had to worry about were my scenes. Everything else was taken care of. Share with us your experience working with other casts in this movie? I loved working with everyone on this set. Every single person brought their A-game and was passionate about delivering a job well done. The energy on set was always cheerful, and we shared one too many laughs. I could tell everyone wanted the best for the project, and that’s precisely what Blood Sisters turned out to be…

What was your most memorable day on set? I worked with the most talented group of actors. Every day was fun and memorable. Blood Sister is a great movie; what message does it pass to society? It’s about paying close attention to your friend, sister or daughter, seeing the signs even when they don’t want to talk or open up about domestic violence. I think the series is timeless, and there is something to take out for everyone in BloodSister. What was the most challenging part of working on this movie? It’s a limited series. The most challenging for me was scheduling because I’m always in Nigeria for just a brief period. You switch between diverse roles in movies perfectly. In some movies, you play the victim. In some others, you’re the victor. How do you find it so easy? Yes, I do. I don’t ever want to be typecast. I am always looking out for roles I haven’t played. I still have roles I haven’t played after over two decades in Nollywood

Ini Dima - Okojie drives me.

When you received the script for this movie, what caught your attention? Sincerely, the series already had my attention even from the auditions. And the truth is, I’m all about solid, authentic stories. Everything about the story was so intriguing yet so relatable. The characters were well developed and had such fantastic arcs. That’s what

Tell us about your character and how you were able to express it in the movie? I like to describe Sarah as someone who felt like she had to carry the weight of the world on her shoulders, whether or not it was detrimental to her well being. And we see that play out through the entire course of the series. In the beginning, she appears to be living the life people only dream of, but what we soon come to realize is the burden she’s been carrying. I had to do a lot of research to play Sarah truthfully. I had to get myself to understand as much as possible what it feels like to be in an abusive relationship and also the decision to stay in one, which was the most tasking thing for me.

Blood Sisters was shot during the Covid-19 pandemic. What was that like, and did it make filming challenging? It was challenging filming during covid 19 because we had to ensure we were in a bubble and adhering to all Covid precautions. Tests were carried out every two weeks (we all know how annoying it is when they stick that thing up your nose, lol). I remember there was a time when one of the cast members had caught covid, and we had a huge scene planned for the day, but production had to shut everything down and rework the entire schedule. I’m so proud of the cast and crew for being able to shoot this fantastic series under such challenging conditions.

How was it working with Ebonylife and Netflix? It was a one-of-a-kind experience working with Ebonylife and Netflix on this project, and I mean this sincerely. The level of commitment, professionalism, attention to detail, and even the love and care from the cast and crew, is something I have never experienced to this extent in my career. It has set a standard for future projects. How has your character in Blood Sisters shaped your views about life generally? It’s just re-emphasized the importance of empathy. It is so important for us to deliberate about being kind and mindful of what people around us might be going through. What was the most challenging part of playing your character in this movie? I would like to say it was the physical aspects of the shoot. It was very physically challenging for my character. However, that did not compare to how tasking the emotional and mental part of portraying Sarah was. I had to be very vulnerable as Sarah, and I had to dig very deep to be able to emote the things she was feeling truthfully. It’s a raw place, and I fully dived into those emotions. It took a lot of research, and it’s all or nothing for me!. So it always has to be all.
