This Digital Economy...

One look at Derin Odugbesan Thomas’s debut collection, and am again reminded of the immense potential for monetising a substantial following. And she isn’t the first, actually . Lately, there has been a rise in the number of young influencers who are turning their online following into successful business ventures. And it’s truly inspiring to see how they are using their social media platforms not only to entertain and engage their followers but also to create a sustainable source of income for themselves. These young entrepreneurs have taken the initiative to create their own opportunities. They have identified their skills and talents and found ways to monetise them through social media platforms, again proving that the digital economy is a viable option for those willing to do the work.

What makes their success even more admirable is the tenacity they exhibit in the face of adversity. We all know that entrepreneurship is no walk in the park, and these young individuals are well aware of the difficulties that come with it. Yet, they persist, driven by their dreams and a desire to create a better future for themselves. From sourcing materials to managing inventory, to shipping orders, they are doing it all. They are also navigating the unpredictable nature of the online world where algorithms, changing trends, and fickle audiences can make or break their businesses. Oh well, good for them, I can hear some of you say, especially those of you who haven’t had good experiences with some of these influencer entrepreneurs. Trust me; have been there myself, and so the skepticism is not unwarranted. Nonetheless, it is essential to recognise that not all influencers are the same. Among the countless individuals vying for your attention, there are genuine, passionate, and talented young minds dedicated to providing value to their audience.

Yes, we must be cautious consumers, but we should not allow fear to overshadow the opportunities that exist within the influencer community. Instead, let us focus on finding those who align with our values and demonstrate transparency, honesty, and integrity in their work.

So, the next time you come across an influencer who resonates with you offering a product or service that you just might be interested in, take a moment to consider their track record, the quality of their content, and the values they uphold and please show your support by patronising them. By giving them a chance and supporting their endeavours, we can encourage ethical practices and foster a community that values transparency and authenticity.

FIVE REASONS EVERY WOMAN SHOULD TRY THE TROUSER SUIT TREND

In fashion, power dressing has always held a special allure. And when it comes to embodying confidence, sophistication, and style, nothing quite matches the timeless elegance of a well-tailored trouser suit. While traditionally associated with men’s formal attire, the trouser suit has gracefully transitioned into women’s fashion, symbolising empowerment and femininity. Still not sure about it? Here are five reasons every woman should embrace this power outfit with open arms.

Exude Confidence

The trouser suit exudes an air of undeniable confidence that is hard to match. When you slip into a well-fitted suit, you instantly feel a sense of power and authority, ready to conquer whatever challenges come your way. The structured silhouette of a trouser suit accentuates your natural curves while providing a sleek, polished look. Whether it’s for a high-powered business meeting, a formal event, or even a casual outing, the trouser suit is the ultimate confidence booster that will make you stand out from the crowd.

Versatility

One of the most significant advantages of the trouser suit trend is its versatility. With endless combinations and styling possibilities, it becomes a go-to ensemble for any occasion. Pair a tailored suit with a crisp buttondown shirt and classic pumps for a professional look. To transition into an evening affair, simply swap the shirt for a lacy camisole and add a statement necklace. You can even experiment with bold patterns and vibrant colours or mix and match different suit separates to showcase your individuality.

Redefine Femininity

Gone are the days when femininity was solely associated with flowing dresses and skirts. The trouser-suit trend empowers women to redefine femininity on their own terms. With its

structured lines and tailored cuts, the suit embraces the female form, highlighting strength and elegance simultaneously. Embracing this trend allows you to break free from traditional fashion norms, paving the way for a bold and contemporary expression of femininity.

Effortless Elegance

An undeniable elegance emanates from a woman in a perfectly tailored trouser suit. The clean lines, meticulous stitching, and attention to detail create a seamless, sophisticated look. Whether you opt for a classic black suit, a pinstripe pattern, or a bold colour, the trouser suit elevates your style effortlessly. It’s an investment piece that stands the test of time, providing a foundation for countless fashion-forward ensembles.

Embrace the Empowerment

Finally, the trouser suit trend is more than just a fashion statement—it’s a symbol of empowerment. By donning a suit traditionally associated with men, women demonstrate their ability to break barriers, shatter glass ceilings, and claim their space in every sphere of life. The trouser suit represents the triumph of equality, reminding us that women can be strong, successful, and fashionable all at once. Wearing a trouser suit is not just about looking good; it’s about feeling empowered and embracing the limitless possibilities that lie ahead.

BIODUN STEPHEN TELLS A TALE OF FORGIVENESS AND SECOND CHANCES IN ‘SISTA.’

From storyline to acting, directing and costumes, Biodun Stephen’s ‘Sista’ had us in a magnetic and emotional chokehold from start to finish.

Set against the vibrant backdrop of Nigeria, the movie is centered around a mother of two (Sista) who was abandoned by her children’s father at an early age. She does all sorts of menial jobs to support them through school until nearly two decades later, fate brings the man back into her life and threatens to crash the walls she had carefully built around her and her children. The movie begins slowly but eventually plunges us into a whirlwind of emotions as we witness Sista’s journeys that are as relatable as they are compelling. On the surface, this is a tale as old as time, but it is, sadly, the reality of many women in today’s society, and it definitely doesn’t get told often enough. The film’s screenplay is a masterclass in storytelling. It skillfully explores complex themes such as family dynamics, love, and the consequences of one’s choices. The dialogue is sharp and realistic, effortlessly reflecting the nuances of Nigerian culture and society. The pacing is on point, never leaving room for a dull moment, and the plot twists keep you guessing and eagerly anticipating what’s to come.

The movie has since garnered much appraisal and reviews as it resonates with people of all ages. Whether you’re a single parent or not, or a child, you’re bound to see yourself in one or more of the characters brilliantly portrayed in this movie. It is safe to say that Biodun Stephen has once again solidified her place as one of Nigeria’s top filmmakers by writing, directing and producing this masterpiece. One of the strongest aspects of “Sista” lies in its phenomenal cast. Every actor brings their A-game, delivering heartfelt and sincere performances. Nollywood icon Kehinde Bankole again showed off by delivering a stellar performance as Sista. She completely embodied her character and took us with her into Sista’s journey. This is one

character you would smile, laugh and cry with throughout the movie. The movie also featured the likes of Deyemi Okanlawon, Bisola Aiyeola, Tope Olowoniyan, Chimezie Imo, Akintoba Adeoluwa, Chiamaka Uzokwe, and many more. All of the actors delivered their roles without being overly dramatic or ‘cringe’; it was refreshing to see.

Aside from the obvious acting prowess of these actors, we cannot but praise Biodun Stephen’s directing as it takes an outstanding director to bring out the kind of performances we witnessed in this movie. From the deployment of flashbacks to enhance storytelling to blocking, plot, dialogue, etc., Biodun Stephen definitely knows her onions.

Costume design in this movie is pretty easy to ignore because, at first glance, there isn’t much to it, but when you take a closer look, you see how each costume was carefully selected to help define the characters and even assist the actors with embodying their roles.

Another one of our favourite things about this movie is the use of indigenous languages, Hausa and Yoruba. Especially the Hausa language, which is so beautifully spoken by Aunty Jay, as played by Tope Olowoniyan. Imitating the likes of Anikulapo and Shanty Town, we thoroughly enjoyed the blend of English and our indigenous languages. We would also like to see this more often in our movies.

A number of the scenes are also memorable in their ‘Nigerianess’; we see the typical Nigerian home and mother in many of the exchanges between Sista and her children, many of which will force a smile or a laugh to escape from your lips as you reflect on your own experience as a Nigerian parent or child.

While we understand and love the simplistic nature of the plot, some aspects of it deserved a little bit more push. It would seem Biodun Stephen was afraid of doing too much and spoiling what seemed good enough. That said, we highly recommend you watch ‘Sista’ with some popcorn and a sidebar of tissues because this one is a real tear-jerker.

BISI FAYEMI The Feminist Icon

In the vast realm of feminist activism, one name shines brightly, capturing the essence of resilience, passion, and unyielding determination: Bisi Fayemi. Celebrating her 60th birthday today, this remarkable feminist activist, writer, and policy advocate has spent her life breaking barriers, challenging societal norms, and championing women’s rights. Not only has she been an influential force in shaping feminist discourse in Nigeria, but she has also blazed a trail as the former First Lady of Ekiti State.

Bisi’s fervent commitment to feminism can be traced back to her younger years. Born and raised in the UK and Nigeria, she witnessed first-hand the inequities faced by women in a patriarchal society. This ignited a fire within her, compelling her to dedicate her life to addressing these injustices.

As a First Lady, she skillfully harnessed her platform to amplify women’s voices and address their unique challenges. She initiated programs that focused on improving women’s access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. She shattered the stereotype of a passive First Lady, using her position to advocate for systemic change and uplift the most marginalised members of society. Beyond her activism and advocacy work, Bisi Fayemi’s writing has been instrumental in challenging and transforming societal narratives. Her thought-provoking articles, essays, and books have shed light on a wide range of feminist issues, challenging deeply ingrained prejudices and providing a platform for alternative perspectives. Her powerful pen has encouraged critical dialogue and spurred the collective consciousness toward progress. As she enters her 60s, her passion for feminism burns ever brighter, and she continues to be a guiding light for future generations.

Happy Birthday, Ma. You turn 60 today. What does this milestone mean to you?

This milestone means a lot to me because it takes the grace and blessings of God Almighty to reach this age. am, therefore, very grateful and full of joy. I am also thankful that I have been able to make contributions towards social change and development in my own way.

So, how has your perspective on life and ageing evolved over the years, and what advice would you give to others approaching this age?

I have been through many transitions, some exciting and some less so, but I have learnt that you grow stronger and learn along the way, so you have better tools to work with as you face the next stage.

I often tell people that we are constantly transitioning from one state of being to another. We are young; then we get older, we are single, then we get married, or married, then divorced, or partners pass away. We become parents, grandparents, employed, get promoted, unemployed or retired, we travel, then return; the list goes on. We should therefore try and prepare for these transitions as much as we can, and even when we have unpleasant transitions forced on us, we should seek out the support systems that will enable us to survive and move on to the next

phase. have been through many transitions, some exciting and some less so, but I have learnt that you grow stronger and learn along the way, so you have better tools to work with as you face the next stage.

Let’s reflect on your time as the First Lady of Ekiti state; how do you think it shaped you as a person and influenced your vision for the future?

I thank God for the opportunity I had to support my husband when he was Governor of Ekiti State from 2010-2014 and 2018-2022. Being the First Lady of a State provided me with a platform to be able to work on creating a more enabling environment for marginalised people in the state, particularly women, children and the elderly. As a Development Practitioner, I have spent at least thirty-two years working on social change issues in African communities and beyond. Being in Ekiti State was an opportunity to make good on the saying that charity begins at home. During my time in Ekiti State, I was able to ensure that there were comprehensive legal and policy frameworks in place to raise the status of women; the idea that women could be leaders in their communities gained a lot of traction, and I was also able to demonstrate that spouses of senior political leaders can add value to the democratic process if given an opportunity.

I am not interested in elective office. What interests me is working on opportunities to get more women and gender-friendly men into office and providing them with skills and opportunities to excel.

What are your plans and aspirations for the future? Have you ever considered seeking an elected position in government?

am not interested in elective office. What interests me is working on opportunities to get more women and gender-friendly men into office and providing them with skills and opportunities to excel.

Family is an integral part of many people’s lives. How has your family supported and influenced your journey, and what role do they play in your plans going forward?

have been blessed with an amazing family. In addition to a wonderful, supportive husband, have biological and non-biological children who continue to make me proud. I was raised by a father who loved me dearly and instilled confidence and self-esteem in me at an early age. My mother taught me the importance of generosity and solidarity. I also have trusted Aunties who have been responsible for ensuring that can focus on my professional duties or demands as a public official. Without them, my life would have been chaotic.

With all this in mind, always talk about how important it is for fathers to raise their daughters to respect themselves, give them a decent education, and ensure they do not lack opportunities. It is also important to raise sons who will not feel entitled to the labours, affections or bodies of women.

Looking back on your achievements and experiences, what would you consider your most significant contribution to society thus far?

This is rather difficult to say! I would like to believe that through my work over the years, I have been able to use my various platforms and voice to make the case that women matter. For example, have created impactful organisations, helped train thousands of women leaders across Africa, co-founded one of the largest women’s funds in the world (AWDF), formed coalitions to push at least seven bills into law in Ekiti State, and provided opportunities for women to access leadership and decision-making positions. I have also shared my thoughts and work through my publications, and I have been in a position to mentor many women and men.

Life after the government house must have presented its own set of opportunities and challenges. How’s that transition going?

Now that am no longer in a government house, have more time for myself, and there are things I no longer have to worry about. People still send requests for support or try to draw me into issues which I believe should no longer be my concern, but politely but firmly decline. One of the challenges of being in my position is that people still see you as their leader, so they will keep coming to you for help with one thing or the other. I, of course, still help when can, but I no longer feel obliged to respond on the scale I used to.

What initiatives or projects have you undertaken to continue your work in empowering women and promoting gender equality since leaving the role of First Lady?

I took a few months off to rest, travel and write. I continue my interests as a Women’s Rights Activist, Policy Advocate, Social Change Philanthropist and Writer through the Above Whispers Foundation, which I established in 2016. Above Whispers Foundation coordinates The Wrapper Network, an online platform which provides mentoring, capacity building and financial support for women entrepreneurs. There is also an Oral History project we started in 2020 called ‘Memories of the Living’, which documents the lives and experiences of elderly people in our communities who otherwise would never be seen or heard of. Recently, I was approached by one of our development partners in the country to help explore ways in which traditional institutions can help implement laws and policies to protect women, especially the laws on sexual and gender-based violence. You will be hearing more about this over the coming months. also have obligations to various bodies where I serve as a board member or advisor, such as the Presidential Advisory Council on Gender, African Women’s Development Fund, Elizade University, African Women Leaders Network, Women at Risk Foundation, Women’s Radio, and King’s College London.

Celebrating Modern Dads: GIFT

FDAY ATHER’S UNIQUE THE IDEAS

Father’s Day is fast approaching, and it’s the perfect opportunity to show appreciation for the dads who embrace their roles with love, dedication, and a touch of style. This year, let’s move beyond the conventional and surprise the special father figures in our lives with thoughtful and innovative gifts that match their modern sensibilities. From tech-savvy gadgets to personalised experiences, here are some extraordinary Father’s Day gift ideas that will make this occasion truly memorable.

How do you balance your personal and professional life, especially as you embark on new endeavours?

As you get older, these pressures are not as intense as in the earlier years. When you have adult children, you can start thinking about yourself a bit more and plan your time and prioritise with minimum disruptions

Are there any particular social issues or causes close to your heart, and how do you plan to advocate for them moving forward?

am concerned about many things, but I will mention three. One, the issue of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in the country; two, Keeping Girls in School and three, increasing the number of women in leadership and decision-making. will continue to advocate, mobilise resources, write and give lectures on these issues, and ask for more accountability and political will from the Federal and State governments.

As you enter this new phase of life, what are some things you most look forward to experiencing or achieving? look forward to seeing younger people stepping up. Those with the right kind of values and passion, not those just looking for fame and glory. I would also like to do more storytelling. In addition to writing, am currently talking to friends in the creative industry about turning some of my stories into short films or documentaries.

So far, what do you consider the most valuable lessons you have learned in life?

Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.

To whom much is given, much is expected. Good manners will get you anywhere you need to go. Just because you can does not mean you should. Be careful how you use your eyes, mouth and ears. Know who you are, and don’t worry about what other people think you are.

Be consistent but not inflexible.

Bring out your wrapper for those who might need it. One day, you will need one too.

No matter how tough life gets, the sun will rise the next day, and the sky will still be blue.

Each piece tells a story, transporting viewers into a world where culture, history, and contemporary themes intertwine. In this exclusive interview with THISDAY Style, he talks about the Tatler experience and navigating challenges and opportunities in the Nigerian art market.

Tell me a bit about your journey as an Artist. What inspired you to pursue a career in Visual Art?

My journey as an artist can be traced back to when was a young boy living with my grandfather; would use objects to draw on walls and paper which greatly impressed the people around me. As I grew older, I began to encourage myself to do it professionally because couldn’t think of anything other than making Art. My passion and desire to define my purpose are my core inspiration for becoming a Visual Artist.

How would you describe your artistic style? What mediums and techniques do you typically use in your artwork? I work with oil paint, and as for my artistic style, I’d say an artist who truly appreciates his practice grows in style. At the moment, I engage in the dynamic style of figurative painting with a symbolic influence. I am currently exploring significant African pointers like the Afro Hairstyle, sometimes tribal marks and the outlook of an average cultural woman in this present era.

Your portrait of the late Queen for Tatler’s Platinum Jubilee issue was a special commission. Can you share the creative process behind this artwork and how you approached the subject matter?

When Signature Art Gallery commissioned me to paint the late Queen, it was an extraordinary experience that was different, but I took up the opportunity without looking back. My Grandpa was the first person consulted, asking him things he knew about the late Queen, and the information he gave me significantly contributed to how I arrived at painting the Queen at a younger age. As a highly recognised monarch, documenting her life in a painting had to reflect every monumental aspect of her, aspects I saw in her outstanding youthful agility. had to do my own research as well. gathered papers, stories, pictures and useful reference articles I could use to take a vivid study of the life of the late Queen so that feel inwardly connected to her person before outwardly giving her a representation with my brush strokes.

What was your initial reaction when you were approached to create the portrait of the late Queen for Tatler Magazine?

It was a remarkable experience that I embraced wholeheartedly because I always believed the future is big, and thought to myself maybe the moment God ordained has finally come. It was mainly significant for gaining more career advantages and being recognised globally.

What are your thoughts on the current state of the Nigerian art scene, and how do you see it evolving in the future?

The diversity present in the Nigerian Artspace is exactly what makes Art in Nigeria a unique one. It is not a static space. Right now, it is widely accepted because of the emergence of artists who have contributed their quota and brought development to the country by simply practising their

artistic skills without forgetting the impact of Nigerian artists of the earlier period. As for the way Art will evolve, the current contemporary African Art practice in Nigeria is something sought after locally and internationally. We now see Art and Artists being involved directly or indirectly in crucial decision-making processes and development schemes of administration while also serving as a mirror to society. Undoubtedly, the Nigerian art scene will progress even better than it is now.

So, how do you navigate the challenges and opportunities in the Nigerian Art market?

It is important to understand that the Art market is about value. Because of this, the challenges that come may not necessarily pose a threat when you give value in terms of the quality of your work and how best you deliver. What I do is review opportunities critically and think of how impactful they will be to my career.

How do you balance artistic expression and commercial viability in your artwork, especially considering the demands of high-profile commissions like the one for Tatler?

In my practice so far, expressing myself has always been at the forefront before the venture of commercial viability, and I have allowed that to be the lead that thoroughly guides me. Regardless of the market’s demands, create and express myself genuinely without being restrained by what is in need or what has been done in the past. Like I’d always say, “I paint my truth.”

What do you hope viewers take away from your artwork?

I hope anyone who sees my Art feels a sense of connection and belonging to their roots. I consciously ensure that I leave a piece of myself in every painting I create by replicating an extension of myself (skin tone, to be precise) in all my works. also hope anyone who sees my Art will see a reason to be hopeful and alive because when I had nothing, my Art was the instrument that lifted my spirit.

Can you share any future projects or artistic goals that you are currently working on or planning to pursue in the near future?

Quite recently, a group of associates and established a company named “Piece Unique”, aimed at helping artists manage their careers and also help create opportunities for them to showcase and exhibit their works. I am currently very involved in that.

What advice do you have for aspiring visual artists, especially those from underrepresented communities, who are looking to establish themselves in the art world?

First, be determined and define your purpose and aspirations. Also, be specific about what you want in your career and be true to yourself. Most importantly, source for opportunities on available spaces and platforms and take advantage of them, no matter how little.

MASTER THE ART OF LAYERING

Layering is the secret weapon for maximising your wardrobe’s potential. Combining different garments allows you to create fresh and unique outfits without needing a vast collection of clothes. Experiment with layering different textures, patterns, and lengths to add depth and interest to your outfits. A denim jacket over a floral dress or a collared shirt can instantly transform your look.

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO BUILDING A WARDROBE THAT WORKS

Picture this: You open your closet doors, and instead of a chaotic jumble of clothes, you see a well-curated collection that effortlessly reflects your personal style. Each piece fits you perfectly, suits various occasions, and sparks joy when you put it on. Sounds like a dream, right? Well, with a bit of planning and some smart strategies, you can transform your wardrobe into a harmonious ensemble that always keeps you stylishly prepared. Get ready to unlock the magic of building a wardrobe that works!

KNOW YOUR STYLE

Building a versatile wardrobe starts with understanding your style. Take some time to explore different fashion inspirations, evaluate your preferences, and identify the looks that make you feel confident. Are you more into classic elegance, bohemian vibes, or streetwear chic? Once you define your style, curating a collection that truly represents you becomes much easier.

EDIT AND ORGANISE

Regularly editing and organising your wardrobe is crucial to maintaining its functionality. Set aside time every quarter to assess what you wear and what no longer fits your style. Donate or sell items that no longer serve you, and make room for new pieces that align with your evolving taste. Organise your closet by category, colour, or occasion to make it easier to find what you need, ensuring you always have something to wear.

CLASSIC STAPLES: THE FOUNDATION OF YOUR WARDROBE

Investing in timeless, high-quality staples is essential for building a versatile wardrobe. Consider adding items like a well-fitted blazer, a little black dress, a crisp white shirt, tailored trousers, and a versatile pair of jeans. These classics will form the foundation of your wardrobe and serve as the base for creating countless outfit combinations.

GET CREATIVE MIX AND MATCH

Don’t be afraid to experiment and get creative with your outfits. Mix and match unexpected pieces, combine different patterns and colours, and embrace your personal style. Fashion is a form of self-expression, so have fun with it!

EMBRACE VERSATILITY

When selecting new additions to your wardrobe, opt for versatile pieces that can be styled in multiple ways. For example, a simple button-down shirt can be dressed up with a pencil skirt and heels for a professional look or paired with jeans and sneakers for a more casual vibe. Look for items that seamlessly transition from day to night, allowing you to adapt your outfit to different occasions effortlessly.

PLAY WITH ACCESSORIES

Accessories are the cherry on top of any outfit. They can elevate a simple ensemble and infuse it with personality. Experiment with statement necklaces, scarves, hats, belts, and bags to add that extra touch to your look. Accessories also offer an affordable way to stay on-trend without committing to a complete wardrobe overhaul.

A BLACK GIRL’S GUIDE TO THE ART OF KOREAN SKINCARE

In recent years, Korean skincare has taken the beauty world by storm, garnering a dedicated following of enthusiasts who swear by its transformative effects. While this multi-step routine may initially seem daunting, its emphasis on nourishing and pampering the skin can be a game-changer for people of all ethnic backgrounds, including black women. In this guide, we will explore the world of Korean skincare through a black girl’s perspective, highlighting key considerations and tailored tips to help you achieve your skin goals while embracing your unique beauty.

Understanding the Basics

The foundation of any skincare routine is proper cleansing. As a black woman, choosing a cleanser that effectively removes dirt, oil, and makeup without stripping the skin of its natural moisture is crucial. Look for a gentle cleanser that contains hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin.

The Power of Exfoliation

Exfoliation plays a vital role in removing dead skin cells, revealing a fresh and glowing complexion. However, it’s important to note that black skin tends to be more prone to hyperpigmentation. Opt for chemical exfoliants such as AHAs (alphahydroxy acids) or BHAs (beta-hydroxy acids) that can effectively exfoliate without causing irritation or triggering post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).

Hydration is Key

One of the standout features of Korean skincare is its emphasis on hydration. Black skin tends to have more melanin, which naturally retains moisture. Nevertheless, a consistent moisturising routine is essential for maintaining a healthy skin barrier. Look for moisturisers that contain ingredients like ceramides, niacinamide, or snail mucin, which can help lock in moisture and provide nourishment to the skin.

Targeted Treatments

catch your attention in the design world. Do you gravitate towards bold geometric patterns, vintage furniture pieces, or the organic textures of natural materials? Identifying these recurring elements will help you narrow your design style and curate a cohesive and visually appealing space.

Experiment and Explore

Feel free to step out of your comfort zone and explore different design styles. Visit showrooms, attend home decor exhibitions, and engage with interior designers to gain insights and broaden your horizons. By experimenting with various styles, you’ll gradually discover what resonates with you and what doesn’t. Remember, finding your style is a journey, and evolving and refining your taste over time is perfectly okay.

Trust Your Instincts

At the end of the day, your gut feeling should be your guiding compass. Trust your instincts and choose designs that genuinely make you happy and comfortable. Interior design is a personal art form; no one knows your preferences better than you. Embrace your intuition and let it lead you towards creating a space that reflects your unique style and brings you joy.

Embracing Your Unique Beauty

Korean skincare is founded on the principle of self-care and embracing your natural beauty. As a black woman, it’s essential to recognise and celebrate the diversity of beauty standards. Korean skincare can enhance your natural radiance while embracing and honouring your unique features and skin needs.

Korean skincare is renowned for its wide range of targeted treatments that address specific skin concerns. For black women, issues like uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation, and dark spots may be of particular concern. Incorporating products with brightening ingredients like vitamin C, arbutin, or liquorice root extract can help even out the complexion and minimise dark spots over time.

Sun Protection

Regardless of your skin tone, sun protection is non-negotiable. Black skin has a natural SPF of around 13.4, providing some inherent protection against the sun’s harmful rays. However, it’s crucial to incorporate a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher into your daily routine. Look for lightweight, non-greasy sunscreens that leave no white cast on the skin.

Exploring Sheet Masks

Sheet masks are a staple in Korean skincare and offer a convenient and effective way to address specific concerns while indulging in some selfcare. Look for masks that contain hydrating and brightening ingredients like hyaluronic acid, green tea extract, or pearl extract. Remember, sheet masks are not a substitute for a regular skincare routine but rather an additional treat for your skin.

Tailoring the Routine

While Korean skincare provides a solid framework, tailoring the routine to suit your unique skin needs is important.

Experimentation is key to finding the right combination of products that work best for you. Always remember to introduce new products one at a time, allowing your skin to adjust and monitor for any adverse reactions.
