The Power of Balance

So I am reading the article “Embrace Your Inner Femininity” on page 10 and, of course, taking notes of the tips shared (I hope you do that too ) when it immediately struck me that the article primarily addressed females when it easily could have been both genders. And you know it’s a thing for us generally. When discussing feminity and everything it represents, it’s usually exclusive to women, perpetuating the belief that femininity is inherently female. know you are probably wondering what am on about, but please keep reading.

(Mrs.)

For the longest time, society has propagated the notion that a man who taps into his feminine side somehow becomes weak or loses his masculinity. This stereotype has deprived men of the freedom to practice empathy, display genuine care and sensitivity towards others, and generally explore the depths of their emotional range. We have been socialised to believe that expressions of vulnerability or tenderness are incompatible with manhood, thus reinforcing toxic masculinity. If only I have a penny for every time have heard someone say only weak men cry or the phrase “no dey do like woman”.

The truth is that contrary to what society often suggests, embracing one’s feminine energy does not make a man weak, nor does tapping into masculine energy make a woman hard. These stereotypes have limited our understanding of the human experience and hindered personal growth for both genders. I think it’s time we move past these notions and recognise that everyone possesses diverse qualities and traits that should be celebrated. Men should feel empowered to explore their feminine side without fear of judgment or ridicule. It is perfectly acceptable for a man to be caring and sensitive towards others. These qualities do not diminish his strength or masculinity. In fact, they enhance his ability to connect with others on a deeper level and contribute positively to society. Similarly, women should not be boxed into societal expectations of being nurturing and soft-spoken. They, too, should be free to embrace their masculine energy and assertiveness without being labelled as “bossy” or “aggressive.” By tapping into their masculine energy, they can become effective leaders, make important decisions, and break down barriers that have historically held them back. Generally speaking, by expanding our understanding of femininity and masculinity, we create a more inclusive society where individuals can express themselves authentically. Breaking free from limiting stereotypes allows us to appreciate the full spectrum of human emotions and experiences, fostering empathy and understanding among people of all genders. For all the men reading this, if you are wondering how to get on this journey, you can start by reading up and, like me, take notes.

BINTU FATIMA OMOSEFE TINUBU THE IYALODE OF LAGOS

A forward-thinking matriarch, a steadfast champion of women’s rights, and an accomplished entrepreneur are some of the words that best describe Chief (Mrs.) Bintu

Glorious 80th birthday Celebrations!

of Nigeria’s Women’s League.

Under her visionary leadership, the Women’s League has flourished, spearheading numerous initiatives and securing vital resources for women across the nation. Chief Tinubu’s tireless fundraising efforts have generated millions of Naira, enabling the league to provide crucial support and empowerment to countless women in need. Her unwavering dedication to uplifting others has earned her the admiration and respect of both her peers and the beneficiaries of her philanthropic pursuits.

Born on July 2nd, 1943, into the noble Osunbor family of Benin, Chief Tinubu’s early years were shaped by a nurturing environment that instilled in her a sense of purpose and a drive for excellence. Her education at the Anglican Girls’ School provided a strong foundation for her future endeavours, which would see her emerge as a trailblazer in multiple domains.

She began her career at the Prime Minister’s Office in Lagos and later joined the Ministry of Establishment, where she showcased her exceptional administrative skills. However, it was her marriage to the late Alhaji Kafaru Oluwole Tinubu, a distinguished Commissioner of Police and Barrister from the renowned Tinubu Dynasty of Kakawa, Lagos, that would set her on a transformative path.

Shortly after their wedding, Chief Tinubu and her husband embarked on a four-year journey to the United Kingdom. Upon their return to Lagos, her indomitable spirit led her to accept a groundbreaking role as the inaugural female secretary at Guinness Nigeria PLC. This achievement marked a turning point in her career and set the stage for even greater accomplishments to come.

Chief Tinubu’s professional trajectory continued to ascend as she held positions at Nigeria Airways and the United States Information Services. These experiences provided invaluable insights into the world of import-export business, ultimately paving the way for her to establish the Dejilad Group of Companies, where she currently serves as Chairperson and CEO. Her entrepreneurial prowess and strategic acumen have propelled the company to great heights, making it a key player in the business landscape. Her passion and dedication extend far beyond the boardroom. Embracing Islam, she embarked on her first pilgrimage to Mecca in 1974, marking a profound spiritual awakening that would shape her commitment to service. She has been a steadfast advocate for women’s rights, assuming the presidency of the Anwar-ul-Islam Movement

Chief Tinubu’s impact on society transcends her role in the Women’s League. She has held various influential positions, including presidencies of the Anwar-ul-Islam Women’s League and the Ikoyi Lions Club. Additionally, she has served as an ambassador, matron, and board member for numerous organisations and initiatives, leaving an indelible mark on each one. Her commitment to humanitarian causes has not gone unnoticed, with accolades such as the 2021 Inspirational Woman of the Year from COWLSO and the Women Empowerment Leader Award from the Lady Mechanic Initiative being just a few of the honours bestowed upon her.

Beyond her professional and philanthropic endeavours,

Chief Tinubu’s most cherished role is that of a loving mother and grandmother. Despite her demanding schedule, she has successfully raised her children and remains an active and present figure in her grandchildren’s lives. Her unwavering love and support have fostered an environment of warmth, strength, and unity within her family, creating a legacy that will endure for generations to come.

Chief Tinubu’s zest for life extends beyond her professional and familial responsibilities. She finds joy in activities such as playing golf, travelling, engaging in charitable work, and socialising. These pursuits serve as a testament to her vibrant spirit and insatiable curiosity, demonstrating that age is merely a number when one embraces life with passion and enthusiasm.

As she celebrates her 80th birthday, it is fitting to reflect on the remarkable impact she has had on the lives of countless individuals and communities. Her unwavering dedication to empowering women, fostering social change, and driving economic progress has set an example for generations to come. Today, we pay tribute to Chief Tinubu’s extraordinary achievements, unwavering commitment to uplifting others, and indomitable spirit. Her legacy will forever shine as a guiding light, inspiring generations to strive for greatness and make a difference in the world.

COMFORT CLOTHING; FOREVER TREND OR PASSING FAD?

Once relegated to lazy Sundays and cosy nights, comfort clothing has emerged as a formidable force, challenging the notion that style must come at the expense of comfort.

From the rise of athleisure to the ubiquity of oversized sweaters and joggers, comfort has become the new fashion mantra.

But the question that lingers in the minds of fashion enthusiasts and sceptics alike is whether this newfound love for comfortable clothing is just a passing trend or if it is here to stay forever.

One cannot deny that the global pandemic, with its extended periods of lockdowns and remote work, played a pivotal role in reshaping our relationship with clothing. As millions of people found themselves confined to their homes, the need for comfortable attire became paramount. Out went the restrictive blazers and pencil skirts, and in came the soft fabrics and elastic waistbands.

In this context, the fashion industry responded swiftly and decisively. Designers and brands embraced the demand for comfort clothing, capitalising on the opportunity to reinvent their offerings. Sweatpants were no longer confined to the gym; they became a style statement. Athleisure, a trend that had been steadily gaining momentum, exploded onto the scene, blurring the lines between activewear and everyday clothing.

But what about the future? Will comfort clothing endure even after the pandemic becomes a distant memory?

One of the key driving forces behind the rise of comfort clothing is a growing emphasis on wellbeing and self-care. As we become more attuned to the importance of mental and physical health, we are increasingly seeking out clothing that supports and enhances our overall well-being. Comfort clothing, with its relaxed silhouettes and gentle fabrics, aligns perfectly with this ethos.

The newfound acceptance of comfort clothing has also shattered the long-standing dichotomy between style and comfort. We have realised that looking good does not have to come at the expense of feeling good. In fact, comfort itself has become a defining aspect of style. Fashion icons and influencers have embraced oversized shirts, flowy dresses, and chunky sneakers, proving that comfort can be undeniably chic.

Another factor that supports the longevity of comfort clothing is the evolving nature of work. The pandemic forced many companies to adopt remote work policies, blurring the boundaries between work and home. As a result, the traditional corporate dress codes have relaxed, giving way to a more casual and comfortable approach to dressing. Even as offices reopen, many predict that hybrid work models will become the new norm, allowing people to continue enjoying the freedom of dressing comfortably.

Furthermore, the democratisation of fashion has played a pivotal role in cementing the place of comfort clothing in our wardrobes. With social media platforms and online marketplaces, fashion has become more accessible than ever before. Influencers and everyday individuals are shaping trends and challenging established norms. As a result, the fashion landscape has diversified, accommodating a wide range of preferences and styles, including comfort-centric attire.

It is worth noting that comfort clothing does not imply a complete abandonment of traditional fashion. Rather, it represents an expansion of sartorial possibilities, allowing individuals to curate their personal style while prioritising their comfort. This newfound freedom has empowered people to experiment, embrace their unique preferences, and reject the notion that others should dictate fashion.

MAKING A BOLD FASHION STATEMENT AS A MAN

Fashion has always been a powerful form of selfexpression, allowing individuals to showcase their unique personalities and make a lasting impression. While it’s often perceived as a domain dominated by women, men have an incredible opportunity to break free from conventional norms and create their own fashion statements. Whether you are stepping out for a casual day or a formal affair, these tips will help you unleash your style and make a captivating fashion statement as a man. Remember, fashion is not just about what you wear; it’s about how you wear it. So, step out with confidence, make a lasting impression, and let your style do the talking!

Experiment with Colors and Patterns

Be bold and infuse your wardrobe with vibrant colours and eye-catching patterns. While a classic black suit always exudes elegance, adding pops of colour through accessories, shirts, or even statement jackets can instantly elevate your outfit. Experiment with complementary colour combinations and explore patterns that speak to your personality, injecting life and energy into your overall look.

Define Your Style

Before making a fashion statement, it’s crucial to identify and embrace your personal style. Fashion is about following trends and creating a distinct identity that reflects who you are. Take time to explore different styles, pay attention to what resonates with you, and build a wardrobe that aligns with your personality and lifestyle. Remember, confidence starts with feeling comfortable in your skin.

Embrace Modern Trends

While sticking to timeless classics is always a safe bet, don’t shy away from incorporating modern trends into your fashion repertoire. Stay updated with the latest fashion magazines, blogs, and runway shows to get inspiration and adapt new trends to suit your personal style. Whether it’s a contemporary twist on a traditional suit or experimenting with unconventional silhouettes, embracing modern trends can add an edge to your fashion statement.

Tailoring is Key

Proper tailoring is one of the most significant factors in achieving a sharp and impactful fashion statement. Illfitting clothing can undermine even the most stylish ensemble. Invest in a good tailor who can ensure your clothes fit perfectly, highlighting your best features and creating a polished look. From suits to casual attire, a well-tailored outfit will make heads turn wherever you go.

Pay Attention to Grooming

A fashion statement is not solely about clothing; grooming plays an integral role in the overall package. Maintain a wellgroomed appearance by keeping your hair, beard, and nails in check. Regular visits to the barber or hair salon, investing in quality grooming products, and practising good skincare habits will ensure you exude a refined and stylish aura.

PIONEERING SAFER SKINCARE PRODUCTS

Oyindamola Bernard is the visionary CEO and creator of the ultra-clean, premium organic cosmetics brand Ewami Essential. With a profound love for our environment and an unwavering commitment to self-care, humanity, and the planet, Oyindamola pioneered a new era of safer skincare products. The Ewami Essential brand takes pride in using natural and cruelty-free ingredients sourced from various parts of the world and has become a household name in the beauty industry, currently selling on four continents. It has a cult following and continues to earn the praise of many beauty enthusiasts.

In this interview with Funke Babs Kufeji, Oyindamola shares the story and philosophy behind her brand while also sharing success tips for aspiring beauty entrepreneurs.

Our formulations are carefully crafted using natural and organic ingredients and scientifically developed actives to produce safe, effective, and potent products. We steer clear of hidden chemicals, harsh additives, and synthetic ingredients that can be snuck into some skincare products. When it comes to ingredient selection, we go the extra mile by prioritising sourcing high-quality organic ingredients from trusted suppliers and farmers who share our commitment to purity and sustainability.

How are your products manufactured?

At Ewami, we take great care in manufacturing our products to ensure they meet global standards. All our standards for clean, toxic-free beauty brands are based on the COSMOS UK certification standard. We strive to minimise our ecological footprint by using recyclable or biodegradable materials while maintaining the functionality and integrity of our packaging. Our manufacturing process is designed to deliver products that are not only effective but also safe, pure, and environmentally conscious. We want our customers to have complete confidence in the quality and integrity of every Ewami product they purchase.

What would you say has been crucial in creating a niche organic skincare range?

One of the key factors in launching this brand was how important it was to us to marry old traditional beauty practices with local ingredients and science-based actives to create formidable, potent beauty products. We were determined to stick with it irrespective of the fact that this brand is situated in West Africa, which according to the WHO (World Health Organisation), holds the highest number of people practising skin bleaching. We, therefore, understood it was not going to be a smooth ride. Due to this hinging premise, sensitisation and education have been two of the most important pinnacles of our brand. Next month, we start a series with selected and seasoned dermatologists worldwide that will further aid us in driving campaigns and sensitisations around skin health.

What were some of the key learnings from your path to sustainability, and what are some of the future challenges you anticipate as the beauty industry responds to the greater demand for sustainable products?

A zoologist turns skincare entrepreneur. What motivated you to create Ewami, and did you go for any formal training, or did your background as a zoologist in any way help?

I have always been super enthused about natural and sustainable skincare. My background in studying animals taught me how they use their surroundings to heal and protect their skin, which got me thinking about the power of nature and its available ingredients for our skin too. With this background, armed with research, understanding how things work in nature, and appreciating the amazing properties of botanicals, we set up a structure to hire lab scientists and skincare formulators. As I didn’t have formal training in skincare, we first dived into the science behind skincare, exploring different plant-based ingredients and how they can work together to make for healthy skin.

What was the first product you launched, and why?

Our very first product was the Ewami Black Soap, a very simple formulation with its key ingredients being simply black soap, camwood, and honey, and let me tell you, it holds a special place in my heart! We decided to launch this product for a couple of reasons. First, the black soap in a thick paste was incredibly easy to put together. We wanted to start with a product that showcased the power of natural ingredients in a simple yet effective way. The formulation of the black soap paste allowed us to harness the goodness of traditional African black soap, known for its healing and nourishing properties, and create a product that was easy to use and suitable for a wide range of skin types.

With so many Organic skincare products on the market, how does your skincare product formulation differ from other organic skincare brands, and why should people trust your brand to deliver pure organic?

There are tons of organic skincare brands out there, and it can be hard to know which to trust. What sets us apart first is our transparency; we believe in being completely open about what goes into our products.

Sustainability is a journey, not a destination. We’ve learned the importance of constantly seeking ways to improve our practices, from ingredient sourcing to manufacturing processes and packaging solutions. It’s a never-ending process of learning, adapting, and striving for the better. As the demand for sustainable products grows, innovation becomes crucial. We’ve learned that investing in research and development is essential to discovering new eco-friendly ingredients, alternative packaging materials, and more sustainable production techniques. It’s about pushing boundaries and finding creative solutions. As the beauty industry evolves, meeting these challenges requires ongoing commitment, collaboration, and innovation. By staying true to our values at Ewami, listening to consumer needs, and embracing a sustainable mindset, we can collectively drive positive change and create a more sustainable future for the beauty industry.

What’s your advice to other entrepreneurs venturing into the same market?

Find your unique value proposition. In a saturated market, it’s essential to differentiate yourself. Identify what makes your brand and products unique. It could be a specific niche, innovative formulations, sustainability practices, or a compelling brand story. Discover your unique value proposition and make it shine. Prioritise quality and efficacy. In the beauty industry, these two things are key.
