Is this really a thing ?
Finally, it’s a new week, and am here for all the positive energy it has to offer. I must admit that last week was one of those weeks when experienced extreme fatigue like never before. found myself dragging my feet, struggling to focus, and feeling an overwhelming sense of exhaustion. It was as if my body and mind had hit a wall, and I couldn’t seem to find the energy to climb over it. But then, someone mentioned the term “mid-year burnout,” and suddenly, it all made sense.
Mid-year burnout, they said, is a phenomenon that occurs when the demands of our daily lives catch up with us halfway through the year. It’s a time when our energy levels dip, motivation wanes, and fatigue takes hold. It’s not uncommon to experience this, especially when we’ve been pushing ourselves relentlessly without taking much-needed breaks. I’m curious to know if any of you are currently going through the same thing. How are you coping with mid-year burnout? Is it a thing? And have you found any effective strategies to rejuvenate yourselves? Personally, I’ve discovered that getting ample sleep is crucial during times like these. It’s incredible how a good night’s rest can do wonders for our well-being. So, if you’re feeling drained, why not indulge in a little extra shut-eye?

THE BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO INVESTING IN TIMELESS LUXURY PIECES
Beyond their allure, high-end fashion items have also become smart investment choices for those seeking to build a collection that reflects their personal style and holds its value over time. If you’re a novice in investing in luxury fashion, fear not! This beginner’s guide will walk you through the essential steps to curating a collection of timeless pieces that will elevate your style and potentially yield financial returns.
THE RISE OF DUPES: HOW GEN Z IS MAKING
AFFORDABLE FASHION COOL
What was once considered the ultimate flex on platforms like Instagram and YouTube - flaunting designer hauls and luxury purchases - has taken a backseat for the new generation. For Gen Z, it’s no longer about the price tag or the brand name; it’s about scoring a bargain, sharing their frugal finds with their followers and showing others how they can do it too. With over 4.3 billion views on TikTok alone, the hashtag #dupe has become a symbol of this cultural shift.
So, what exactly are dupes? Unlike fake or counterfeit items, dupes do not replicate trademarked names, logos, or intricate details that could infringe upon copyright or intellectual property laws. Dupes are essentially affordable alternatives to high-end designer products, closely resembling their luxurious counterparts without the hefty price tag.
While the rise of dupes may seem like a win-win situation, there are potential downsides to consider. Experts argue that the cultural acceptance of fake goods, even in the form of legal dupes, can contribute to the devaluation of craftsmanship and the erosion of the luxury industry.
They are not swayed by labels or brand names. Instead, they seek out unique finds that align with their personal style. The rise of dupes aligns perfectly with this mindset, allowing them to acquire fashionable pieces at a fraction of the cost.
The allure of dupes lies in their accessibility. Gen Z, known for their resourcefulness and frugality, are seduced by the idea of luxury on a budget. They’re not willing to compromise their personal style and desire to stay on-trend, but they understand the financial limitations of their generation. They are not swayed by labels or brand names. Instead, they seek out unique finds that align with their personal style. The rise of dupes aligns perfectly with this mindset, allowing them to acquire fashionable pieces at a fraction of the cost. By showcasing their budget-friendly hauls on social media platforms like TikTok, they not only build their own fashion identity but also empower their followers to do the same. It’s no longer about showing off luxury; it’s about inspiring and inclusivity.
Luxury brands invest heavily in research, design, and craftsmanship, which is reflected in their price tags. By opting for dupes, consumers may inadvertently undermine the value of these qualities, leading to a decline in the demand for genuine luxury items. It is also important to note that while dupes may be legal and not breaching copyright or intellectual property laws, they blur the boundaries between authenticity and imitation. This raises concerns about the long-term implications for brand integrity and the potential dilution of the luxury experience. Additionally, the ethical implications of supporting fast fashion and the environmental impact of disposable clothing cannot be ignored.
Some luxury brands have recognised this shift and are embracing it, partnering with influencers and launching more affordable lines to cater to the demand for budget-friendly options. By doing so, they strive to maintain relevance and appeal to a wider audience, including Gen Z consumers who are searching for high-quality alternatives.
Amidst all this, luxury brands now face a new challenge: how to captivate and retain the attention of a generation that values accessibility and affordability. One thing is for sure though the era of dupes is here to stay, and it’s up to the fashion industry to find a balance between accessibility and maintaining the allure of luxury.
ion collection, it’s wise, to begin with timeless classics that have proven their staying power. Iconic pieces like the little black dress, tailored blazers, well-crafted leather handbags, and elegant watches have stood strong in the fashion industry for decades. These staples not only exude sophistication but also retain their value in the resale market, making them solid investment choices.
Quality over Quantity
Luxury fashion investments are all about quality craftsmanship and materials. When purchasing a high-end piece, focus on its durability, attention to detail, and longevity. Opt for natural fabrics, fine leathers, and meticulously hand-stitched finishes. Remember, having a few exceptional pieces you can wear and cherish for years is better than a closet full of disposable fashion.
Limited Editions and Collaborations
Keep an eye out for limited-edition releases and designer collaborations. These exclusive partnerships often result in unique and highly sought-after pieces that can significantly appreciate value. From high-fashion collaborations with streetwear brands to capsule collections featuring renowned artists, these limited editions can add a touch of rarity and exclusivity to your collection.

Educate Yourself
Before diving into the world of luxury fashion investments, it’s essential to do your research. Take the time to familiarize yourself with renowned luxury brands, iconic designers, and their signature pieces. Understand the materials, craftsmanship, and unique features that set them apart. By building a foundation of knowledge, you’ll be able to make informed decisions and identify true investment-worthy items.
Define Your Style
Investing in luxury fashion should reflect your personal taste and style. Take the time to explore different aesthetics and discover what resonates with you. Consider your lifestyle, the occasions you dress for, and the statement you want to make through your fashion choices. By understanding your preferences, you can curate a collection that stands the test of time and aligns with your unique flair.

Investing in luxury fashion extends beyond clothing and accessories. Fine jewellery, particularly pieces from reputable brands or renowned designers, can appreciate in value over time. Care and Maintenance

OSAYI ALILE Driving Social Change
Meet Osayi Alile, a remarkable advocate of social enterprise and the CEO of Act Foundation, a grant-making non-profit organisation that provides funds to the social sector to create change in the society we live in today.
Armed with an impressive academic background, extensive experience in the banking industry and expertise in Human Development, she is fast becoming that catalyst for social change and has, over time, worked tirelessly, engaging with stakeholders to make transformational social impact in the areas of education, health, entrepreneurship, environment and leadership.
Her hard work, dedication and resilience in the social sector are second to none, and through it, her foundation was adjudged three years in a row “Not-For-Profit of the Year” at the 2018, 2019 & 2020 SERAS CSR Awards. Recently, Osayi turned the Big 50 and had a sitdown with Funke Babs Kufeji, where she spoke about the importance of creating a positive social impact in our world, women, youth empowerment, equity, and so much more.
Going straight in, can we talk about the Aspire Coronation Trust Foundation (ACT) and your current role there as the CEO?
Over the last five years, Aspire Coronation Trust (ACT) Foundation has supported 80 non-profit organisations across 8 African countries to address important social challenges and related vulnerabilities across Africa. From providing prostate, breast and cervical cancer screening to over 22,000 people, supporting over 2,000 girls in secondary schools with STEM training, planting 3,028 trees, and engaging 1.5 million Nigerians on national development and good governance, the foundation, through its grantees, has touched the lives of over 2 million people. ACT Foundation is a grant-making organisation supporting local, national, and regional non-profit and social enterprise organisations providing high-impact solutions in the areas of Health, Entrepreneurship, Environment, and Leadership on the continent.
As the CEO of ACT Foundation, I lead a vibrant team of social impact practitioners engaging with non-profits and social enterprises across the continent. My role is to provide strategic direction to the team, and you can also say I am the ‘chief marketing and branding officer’ for the organisation.
Now, generally speaking, what is the social sector’s role in shaping the community for the future in Nigeria and Africa?
Social sector organisations work closely with grassroots communities affected by the various social issues plaguing Nigeria and Africa. From challenges with access to basic services like healthcare and education to insecurity and conflict issues to genderbased violence, social sector organisations have firsthand knowledge of the issues and are responsible for designing sustainable solutions to address them. The social sector is also responsible for connecting donors or philanthropic institutions to the communities they seek to support by implementing programs and providing innovative solutions.
Going by your experience, what would you say are the common social issues faced on the African continent?
There are numerous challenges faced across the continent, with many similarities. The challenge of insecurity across some select states in the country. And this has exacerbated the already existing issues around poverty, healthcare, education, employment etc. The COVID-19 pandemic also further revealed vulnerabilities in our public health and social welfare sectors. There are also challenges that are based on gender discrimination and inequality, including genderbased violence, the absence of economic empowerment for women, low education rates for girls etc.
When it comes to Nigeria, what are some of the prevailing social issues, and how are they being addressed?
As Africa’s most populous nation with minimal amenities and infrastructure, Nigeria’s over 200 million population faces a myriad of challenges ranging from health to unemployment, insecurity, poverty, poor leadership, youth restiveness, among others.
As an organisation, we are committed to addressing and providing innovative solutions to social, economic, and environmental challenges and associated vulnerabilities across the African continent. Some of these challenges include malaria, cancer, eye care, pollution, recycling, tree planting, and youth leadership. Through our innovative programs and grant-giving, we have empowered many individuals across the 36 states of the country.
In your view, what is the role of the government and the private sector regarding social issues in Nigeria?
Currently, there is a greater emphasis on collaboration and partnership – within and across sectors. Actors from the social, private, and public sectors are working together more than ever to address recurring social challenges collaboratively. The Coalition Against COVID-19 (CACOVID), of which served as co-administrator, is a great example. While it was private sector driven, especially regarding financial support, it was technically supported by the public sector and operationalised by the social sector. Also, in the last five years, we have worked in partnership with Access Bank to fund many impact projects reaching over 2 million beneficiaries across 8 African countries, including Nigeria. These kinds of partnerships can only positively influence the growth of the sector in the years to come.
Do you feel these two institutions are doing enough in the social sector, and if not, what more can be done, or should they be doing?
As mentioned above, there have been a lot more collaborations from the government and the private sector in recent years. However, there is room for much more collaborative relationships. In the global space, there is a call for more indigenous philanthropy and less dependence on international partnerships because we are best poised to solve our problems. This approach calls for more deepseated collaborations between the public, private and social sectors.
The social issues faced in Nigeria are a lot, and many non-profit organisations have been doing a lot of work to help, but so much more needs to be done. What should the non-profit sector adopt going forward to
I strongly believe that Nigerians have philanthropic tendencies and have a longstanding tradition of giving and supporting charitable causes. We often engage in informal giving practices, such as financial assistance to family members, friends, and community members in need.
COVER Sunday, July 16, 2023 Vol. 22, No. 10286 Sunday, July 16, 2023 Vol. 22, No. 10286 14 15
improve its impact?
The non-profit sector has resourceful professionals doing phenomenal work to address the vulnerabilities and challenges in the space. However, a lot of times, they work in silos or as though in competition with one another. To consolidate efforts, the non-profit sector players need to find common grounds for collaboration and partnership that will bring about even greater results. This needs to be well thought-out, and the players must play to each other’s strengths for meaningful impact. Working together will help leverage resources, expertise, and networks to address social issues more effectively. Secondly, non-profit organisations should prioritise data collection and analysis. By gathering accurate and comprehensive data on social issues, they can better understand the root causes and develop evidencebased solutions. This can lead to more targeted interventions and better outcomes. We have conducted several studies in the past that have contributed to the body of knowledge in the non-profit space. Recently, we conducted research to promote a comprehensive understanding of gender mainstreaming and offer best-practice guidance on integrating gender as a cross-cutting issue within NGO programmes. We expect that this will increase the uptake of gender transformative programming in the non-profit space.
Lastly, we must embrace a culture of innovation and adaptability and leverage technology using digital platforms and tools to streamline our operations and reach a wider audience.
How do you source funds as a non-profit organisation, knowing the prevailing corruption issues in Nigeria and the mistrust people have regarding giving to charity?
At ACT Foundation, Integrity and Accountability are top of our core values. We highly regard our funders and partners and demonstrate credibility in our fund management. We prioritise transparency in our financial operations, providing regular updates on how funds are utilised. This helps us build trust and alleviate concerns about corruption. We also collaborate with reputable local and international organisations to enhance our credibility. For example, we have been funded recently by Charities Aid Foundation, America, and we had to go through a series of verification processes to get the funding. I am convinced that we were successful because of our credibility.
In your years working in this sector, will you say Nigerians are philanthropic?
I strongly believe that Nigerians have philanthropic tendencies and have a long-standing tradition of giving and supporting charitable causes. We often engage in informal giving practices, such as financial assistance to family members, friends, and community members in need. Additionally, there are numerous philanthropic organisations and foundations in Nigeria that work towards addressing social issues and improving the well-being of communities. I come from a family of generous givers, and most people in my network give to different causes. However, it is important to note that there are always opportunities for further growth and engagement in philanthropic activities to harness the philanthropic potential of Nigerians and further enhance their impact in addressing social challenges. To achieve this, we must give strategically, document our giving and its impact and tell our stories in ways no one else but us can tell them.
You recently turned 50, and the accolades and well wishes you got were very heartwarming, with most people praising your
commitment and dedication to helping and empowering. Tell us how you got into social work. Was it something you wanted to do growing up?
Growing up, always wanted to become a lawyer because I believed I was a great arbitrator and could win any case. I used this skill in conflict resolution among my siblings, and everyone thought I would become a lawyer. However, after University, my career started in the Banking sector. In the course of this, volunteered in a non-profit project just as I was about to begin my master’s program, and that was when developed both an interest and a passion for the social sector, and I changed my Master’s program to a non-profit course. The rest, they say, is history. Over the years, I have continued pursuing this passion and am determined to leave behind my footprints in the sector.
So far, what has been your greatest achievement in the social impact sector?
My greatest achievement lies in the impact of our work over the years on the improved living of people within Nigeria and in Africa. As I look back to my years in the social sector, I am very proud of the level of impact the sector has had on individuals, systems and structures. Also, I am very proud of the overall growth of the social impact sector in Nigeria. Bringing it home, I am proud of the over 2 million individuals Aspire Coronation Trust Foundation has impacted in the last five years through our programs and projects on health, environment, entrepreneurship, and leadership. am proud of the over 80 organisations we have funded in Nigeria and Africa and the impact of these projects on the lives of millions across the continent. All of these are my greatest achievements.
Let’s talk about the importance of technology for social issues. What role does technology play in addressing social issues and helping to solve them?
The social sector’s future and its impact largely depend on how much we leverage technology. Amongst the various benefits of technology to this sector is its impact on widening the reach and impact of social projects. Exploring the use of technology tools like social media, digital messaging, the internet, and artificial Intelligence, among others, has proven to boost social interventions and their impact.
In the coming days, technology will play a major role not only programmatically – in how funders and implementing organisations engage, but also operationally – how individual organisations operate internally. There is the need for social enterprises to adjust and embrace tech innovations as its future.
Having played in this sector for this long, what lessons have you learned while trying to tackle some of these prevalent social issues in Nigeria?
Social impact work is never done. But I will say that I am proud of the support we’ve been able to give to social sector organisations doing great work to address the numerous challenges we’re faced with as a continent. So far, we’ve impacted over 2.2 million beneficiaries in about six years, and we hope to grow that number exponentially. I’m also proud of our work with our Changemakers Innovation Challenge (CIC) – supporting non-profits and social enterprises leveraging technology and digital tools to create social change.
What is your advice to those trying to enter this sector? Be passionate, be innovative, stay focused and grow.

IS GLASS SKIN REALLY ACHIEVABLE?
Originating from Korea, the concept of glass skin refers to a complexion so clear and luminous that it appears as smooth and translucent as glass. It’s a lofty goal that many aspire to achieve, but is it truly attainable?
Defining Glass Skin
To understand the attainability of glass skin, it’s essential to establish what it entails. Glass skin is characterised by a poreless, dewy, and translucent complexion. The skin appears plump, smooth and reflects light, giving it a radiant, almost ethereal appearance. It is worth noting that glass skin is not about eradicating natural skin imperfections but rather enhancing the overall texture and glow.
MOVIE REVIEW: IJAKUMO
Produced by Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham and directed by Adebayo Tijani, IJAKUMO: THE BORNAGAIN STRIPPER was first released to Nigerian Cinemas in December 2022. However, it was only recently released on Netflix; and it’s got everyone talking again. So, is it worth watching? Is it worth all the hype? Is it even deserving of the critiques? We’re here to break it all down.
Establish a Consistent Skincare Routine
A well-rounded routine is the foundation of any successful skincare journey. Clean your face twice daily with a gentle cleanser suitable for your skin type, followed by a hydrating toner to balance your pH levels. Incorporate chemical exfoliants like AHAs or BHAs to remove dead skin cells and promote cellular turnover. Hydrate your skin with a lightweight moisturiser and protect it from harmful UV rays with a broad-spectrum sunscreen.
Hydration, Inside and Out
Glass skin thrives on hydration, so keeping your body well-hydrated is crucial. Drink an adequate amount of water daily to maintain the skin’s moisture balance. Additionally, integrate hydrating products into your skincare routine, such as essences, serums, and moisturisers containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin, which help to lock in moisture and plump the skin.
Nourish from Within
PLOT SUMMARY
IJAKUMO tells the story of a woman who had everything taken from her when her ex-boyfriend left her for dead. Toyin Abraham plays an older Asabi seeking revenge against an older Jide (Kunle Remi) who abandoned her and became a renowned pastor of a megachurch in Lagos. To achieve this, she enlists the help of a stripper and a hacker.
REVIEW
Dispelling the Myth
First of all, acknowledging that achieving glass skin does not mean transforming your skin into a completely different entity is crucial. We all have unique skin types, genetic predispositions, and environmental factors that influence our complexion. Therefore, it’s unrealistic to expect identical results for everyone. However, what is achievable is the enhancement and improvement of your skin’s natural radiance, leading to a healthier, more glowing appearance.
How to Attain Glass Skin
While the concept of glass skin may seem unattainable for many, it’s important to shift our perspective. Glass skin is not about perfection; it’s about embracing and enhancing our skin’s natural beauty.
While skincare products play a significant role, don’t underestimate the impact of a healthy diet. Consume a well-balanced meal rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals to nourish your skin from within. Add fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins to your diet. Avoid excessive consumption of processed foods, sugary drinks, and alcohol, as they can contribute to skin inflammation and dullness.
Targeted Treatments
Introduce targeted treatments into your routine to address specific skin concerns. For example, incorporate a brightening serum or vitamin C-based product if you struggle with hyperpigmentation. Consider retinol or its gentler derivatives if you’re concerned about fine lines and texture. Consult a dermatologist to determine the most suitable treatments for your needs.
Protect Your Skin
One of the most crucial steps in achieving glass skin is protecting it from external aggressors. Shield your skin from harmful UV rays by wearing sunscreen daily, even on cloudy days. Additionally, minimise exposure to environmental pollutants and irritants by creating a barrier using a lightweight moisturiser or facial oil.
The Power of Makeup
While glass skin should radiate naturally, makeup can help to enhance the illusion. Choose lightweight, dewy foundations or tinted moisturisers that provide coverage while maintaining a luminous finish. Apply a subtle highlighter to the high points of your face, such as the cheekbones and bridge of the nose, to accentuate the natural glow.
The plot, however complex, showed much promise with interesting performances from the likes of Bimbo Akintola. Kunle Remi, Lolade Okunsanya, Olumide Owuru, Debbie Shokoya, amongst others. On the surface, it’s a story about revenge, but the movie comes with much more layers and complexities than we are prepared for. The set and locations were perhaps some of our favourite things about the movie, especially the scenes shot in Abeokuta. They were well-researched and realistic for what the scenes were hoping to achieve.
As it stands, Toyin Abraham seems determined not to be left out of the ongoing show-off of impressive stunts and SFX in Nollywood today. The stunts and SFX used in this movie were representative of how far we’ve come in the Nigerian movie industry; it’s hard not to be a little swayed by this show-off. We’re calling this one a major showoff not just because we have seen better between December and now but mainly because some of them were really unnecessary and only resulted in giving us exaggerated scenes and, in the end, an exaggerated plot.
However, it would be unfair not to applaud the obvious work, dedication and expense it took to give us those effects. As stated earlier, the plot showed much promise, but unfortunately, it couldn’t deliver. We’re blaming bad story development/screenwriting for this one. Most of the complexities did little for the trajectory of the story itself; instead, what we got were a number of unnecessary characters and subplots. The ending, which was supposed to be grand, was bland. We didn’t get to feel that long-awaited sense of victory we had been waiting for all through the movie. Also, why have nearly all the recent Nollywood movies decided to finish us with flashbacks? We get it is essential to the story, this one in particular, but too many hands spoilt the soup here. If you’re going to use flashbacks to drive your story, you better be doing it right.
A number of the flashbacks were so long we nearly forgot they were merely flashbacks and not the present story. In some instances, we enjoyed the flashbacks much more than the scenes set in the present. Now, we have one question, what happened to subtle advertising in movies? Drop a product in the scene and let the camera do the talking. Why are you doing full jingles in a movie? The worst part? This happened at least three times! Dear screenwriter, we have a bone to pick with you on that one. Lastly, the title? Definitely not it.
OUR CONCLUSION
IJAKUMO: THE BORN-AGAIN STRIPPER is definitely pleasing with aesthetics but not so much with its story progression. You won’t miss much if you do not see it, but you will miss some if you don’t. Get it?

RAHMAT OMOLARA ANIMASAUN
They say a woman’s hair is her crown and glory, but the truth is that not every woman is privileged to have her natural hair looking healthy, long and full. We are coming to terms with this reality check after an insightful interview with
RAHMAT
OMOLARA ANIMASAUN,
the founder of a fast-rising hair extension and wig company called Protean Tresses. Her personal journey serves as an inspiration to women across Africa who are facing similar challenges, particularly those who may not even realise they could be affected by Alopecia. Alopecia is a chronic, immune-mediated skin disease characterised by sudden loss of hair on the scalp, beard, and sometimes eyebrows, eyelashes, and body hair. It can also be described as bald spots or bald patches. This patchy hair loss is unpredictable, as the hair growth can return to normal anytime and suddenly fall out again. The affected areas show no signs of inflammation or other reasons for the hair falling out. This condition arises when the immune system attacks and destroys hair follicles, leading to hair loss. There are various contributing factors, such as nutrition, hormonal imbalances, medication use, infections, certain diseases, malignancies, immune system disorders, environmental factors, age, and genetic predisposition. During our conversation with Rahmat, we explored her experiences with Alopecia and why it motivated her to establish a successful business.
Interview By Charles Didee Eta
When did you get Alopecia, and what caused it?
I first noticed it around 2011 while I was still in university. Its size was like a grapefruit initially, but it got worse over the years and is now like a circular slice from a big pineapple - that should help with visualising it better. Genetics played a huge role in causes because my mum and grandmother have the same patch on their heads. Mine unfortunately developed fast over the years due to the extremely stressful and abusive relationships that I had to endure. Stress is a huge factor contributing to hair loss or hair thinning because large numbers of hair follicles are significantly pushed into resting phase.
Did you ever search for ways to treat it?
Yes, I did, actually. Apart from consult-
As a woman, your hair is very important to your appearance because it’s one of the first things people see when looking at you.. It is so unavoidable that it affects your confidence levels, which in turn directly impacts every aspect of your personality and the life around you, such as your relationship with yourself, your career, your relationship with others and so on
ing a trichologist, I took to studying on Google and based on my research, came to find out that there is no actual cure, but instead, there are methods a person infected with hair loss can use for growing their hair quicker like topical immunoxidine, immunotherapy, oral corticosteroids (which are powerful anti-inflammatory drugs that can suppress the immune system), hair transplant and basic self-care, which includes frequent massages and eliminating the stress factor can generally be very helpful. Also, I found a product named “Growthentic”, which helped with the growth of some of my strands, coupled with constantly massaging the scalp with numerous hair oils and masks that helped stimulate the scalp and improve my hair’s thickness. Natural elements like Aloe Vera, coconut oil, Viviscal, fish oil, and ginseng. Onion juice and Rosemary oil are just a couple of the things I use frequently.
So how has it been for you socially?
Well, I’ve had to learn to love myself with it. Sometimes I wear just my scantily plated hair for school runs and to swim. And in situations when I remove my wig, people ask me the reoccurring question: “What happened?!” usually with pity in their eyes, while some others go as far as even asking me to cover it. But to be honest, it’s become part of me, and absolutely embrace it. I came to understand that my hair is my crown, and I must be grateful for the crown God has given to me! Although I’ve considered shaving it all off at some point, for now, It’s personal to me, and I rock it like it’s trendy... Lol
When did you realise you wanted to run a hair company?
Around 2007, when human hair extensions emerged in Nigeria, I always took pride in purchasing numerous types. I maintained a standard of wearing only high-quality hair extensions, which I bought from the best vendor at the time. Due to how passionately I adore hair and my active mind for business, knew would get into the hair business someday. So, while waiting for the right time, began sourcing for
the best hair vendors across different continents, eventually finding a supplier who had been in the hair business for decades and was gracious to put me through. During my contemplation and preparation stages, I developed Alopecia, which created a need for me to help women feel more confident by providing high-quality hair extensions for those who experienced hair loss due to stress, cancer and other autoimmune diseases.
In what way did your condition help with creating your hair company?
This is a really good question! Being that I’m a highly impactful and determined person, doing this gave me a much deeper meaning in terms of purpose. The fact that it was personal was all the driving force I needed to keep me vested way more passionately rather than focusing on the financial benefits involved. The thought that I could help restore confidence in women dealing with Alopecia, general hair loss from cancer, and severe stress gave me immense joy. At Protean Tresses, we empathise with women suffering from hair loss, which is why we give as much as 20% discounts on all their wig and extension purchases to spread awareness about hair loss and, at the same time, declare hair extensions as the undeniable solution.
How does hair affect behaviour?
As a woman, your hair is very important to your appearance because it’s one of the first things people see when looking at you.. It is so unavoidable that it affects your confidence levels, which in turn directly impacts every aspect of your personality and the life around you, such as your relationship with yourself, your career, your relationship with others and so on. Your hair can be artistically transformed to shape how you want other people to view you, and eventually, that’s bound to affect your behaviour and how you carry yourself directly.
What sets you apart from other hair companies?
First of all, we have set a standard of providing readily available high-quality extensions
within hours of purchase, as opposed to most hair retailers who have to order, and sometimes it takes as much as weeks or months before products finally reach the buyer. Our customers say we sell arguably the best hair across various hair types. We do not deal with virgin hair, provided there is a raw donor collection, which is the reason why all our frontals and closures are typically top raw quality only. Also, we continue to increase our hair categories to accommodate new hair types while looking into further innovations in the industry to stay abreast.
What is the business advice you have for new companies selling hair?
First of all, know why you want to be in this business. It’s not the smartest thing to get into a business because everyone is doing it. Next, it is imperative to maintain a good relationship with your customers. You shouldn’t just reach out to them only when you want to make a sale. In addition, having a more collaborative approach to business is key to success. The market is big enough for everyone, and there’s enough space in the sky for every bird to fly. Think collaboration, not competition!
Do not get discouraged. Keep showing up!
Everyone has different seasons; be patient and don’t speak badly about other people’s business. You don’t have to be popular to make sales.
May I add that if you are struggling with the high cost of starting up, we can collaborate with you by selling to you to resell to grow your business, though, as said, we don’t sell virgin quality.
Finally, social media sells, and it’s the new cool; however, do not underestimate the power of traditional marketing methods. Walk up to people; one-on-one marketing is golden. Make conventional flyers and place them in strategic locations. Don’t be hyper-focused on social media marketing; focus on your unique way of communicating about your brand. Dancing and shaking bum is not for everyone. (Laughs) Always put God first. Remember, God is the ultimate source. Pray for your clients, prospective clients, and your business; you will excel!
