THE SOFT POWER BEHIND THE GOVERNOR

SUNDAY, JULY 30, 2023 ...NOT IN THISDAY STYLE? THEN YOU’RE NOT IN STYLE

Aseasoned diplomat with over three decades of service to the nation, she has served in various capacities, leaving an indelible mark on Nigeria’s diplomatic landscape, leading advocacies and influencing policies and programmes that directly affect women, youth and children. Now on the cusp of her 56th birthday, the First Lady intends to dedicate this interview to the memory of her late sister as a heartfelt tribute to the bond they once shared, she hopes to shed light on her roles and responsibilities as the First Lady of Kwara State, her vision for a more equitable society.

A Seat at the Table

Mr President’s long-awaited Ministerial nominees’ List had the names of two young ladies under 40. Am I the only one who’s excited about this? I believe this marks a significant turning point in Nigerian politics, as it breathes new life into the narrative of inclusion and empowerment for women. For far too long, the representation of women on the political scene has been lacking, hindering the full potential of half the nation’s population from contributing their unique perspectives and abilities. However, with these young ladies now having a seat at the table, we are witnessing a promising shift in the tide. This act of inclusivity sends a powerful message to young women across the country – that their voices are essential, and their participation in politics is not only valued but encouraged. Cheers to Mr President for recognising the importance of diverse perspectives and empowering young women to take on influential roles in governance. This will undoubtedly resonate with countless young people, particularly women, inspiring them to participate in politics actively.

VISUAL/SENIOR

In line with this pursuit of female empowerment and support for women in leadership roles, you should read our very insightful cover interview with Her Excellency Ambassador Dr Mrs Olufolake Abdulrazaq, the esteemed First Lady of Kwara State and Chairperson of the Nigeria Governors Wives’ Forum. She is a true champion of women’s rights and has also been actively using her platform to promote women’s leadership and encourage young women with political aspirations. Her words and actions serve as a guiding light for those who seek to make a difference in the political landscape. As we continue on this journey towards a more inclusive society, addressing the pervasive issue of body image and self-acceptance is crucial. And the article on Page 8 does just that. Our society often perpetuates a certain standard of beauty, leading many to struggle with self-criticism and dissatisfaction. This reassuring piece provides valuable insights into embracing our unique selves and highlights the significance of appreciating our individuality, irrespective of societal norms.

am rounding this up with a soft plea that we all use this occasion to galvanise change and encourage even more young women to get involved in politics. Our future is here, and who better to mould it than us? Let us build a future where all voices are heard, and individuals are empowered to positively impact our nation’s growth and prosperity.

Love,

EMBRACE YOUR BODY:

A JOURNEY TO FEELING GOOD IN YOUR SKIN, REGARDLESS OF SHAPE AND SIZE

Living in a society that often glorifies a certain body image, it’s easy to fall into the trap of self-criticism and dissatisfaction with our own appearance. However, feeling good in your skin is not dependent on conforming to societal beauty standards. True contentment and confidence come from within as we learn to accept and cherish our bodies, no matter our shape or size. This week, we delve into the art of embracing your body and provide practical tips on cultivating self-love and feeling comfortable in your own skin.

10 LIFE SKILLS EVERYONE SHOULD LEARN

Acceptance is the Key

The journey to feeling good in your skin begins with self-acceptance. Acknowledge that everybody is unique and beautiful in their own way. Comparing yourself to others only fosters insecurity. Instead, focus on your strengths and celebrate the qualities that make you special.

Mindful Self-Care

Taking care of your body is an essential part of feeling good in your skin. Practice self-care mindfully, without any judgment or guilt. Nourish your body with nutritious foods, stay hydrated, and engage in physical activities that bring you joy.

Remember, self-care is about treating yourself with kindness, not about punishing yourself for not fitting into arbitrary beauty standards.

Dress for Yourself

Wear clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident. Fashion

trends come and go, but your style should reflect your personality and preferences. Embrace outfits that make you happy, regardless of what’s considered “in” at the moment.

Surround Yourself with Positivity

The people we surround ourselves with can significantly influence our self-perception. Seek out friends and communities that uplift and support you. Ditch toxic relationships that breed negativity and body shaming. Surround yourself with individuals who value you for who you are, not just how you look.

Practice Positive Affirmations

Negative self-talk can be detrimental to your self-esteem. Combat those inner critics by practising positive affirmations. Remind yourself daily of your worth, talents, and uniqueness. Embrace the mantra that your value is not tied to your appearance.

Focus

on Health, Not Weight

Shifting the focus from weight to overall health is crucial for feeling good in your skin. Health encompasses more than just physical aspects; it also includes mental and emotional well-being. Prioritise activities that nourish your soul and enhance your overall wellness.

Ditch

the Comparison Game

Social media can be a doubleedged sword when it comes to body image. Remember that most photos online are curated and filtered, not an accurate representation of reality. Resist comparing yourself to these idealised images. Instead, cultivate self-compassion and remind yourself that everyone has their struggles.

Engage in Body-Positive Media Consumption

Choose media that promotes body

positivity and diversity. Surround yourself with content that showcases a wide range of body shapes and sizes. This exposure can help reshape your perception of beauty and challenge narrow beauty standards.

Set Realistic Goals

Setting unrealistic body goals can lead to frustration and disappointment. Instead, focus on setting achievable and healthy goals that improve your overall well-being rather than solely focusing on appearance.

Seek Professional Help if Necessary

If you struggle with body image issues despite your best efforts, seeking professional help can be beneficial. Talking to a therapist or counsellor specialising in body image and self-esteem can provide valuable insights and support.

Interview Konye Chelsea Nwabogor

Congratulations Your excellency on your recent appointment as Chairperson of the Nigeria Governors Wives’ Forum. That’s a really big one. How’s it going so far?

Thank you for your kind words and for having me. To the glory of the Almighty, it has been going so well, and sincerely believe that current realities present us with the opportunity to improve on what’s on ground while promoting the ideals of the forum

I would love to use this opportunity to say a few thank yous to first and foremost, God Almighty for all his blessings and mercies. Then, to my parents for all that they instilled in me and for educating me to the point where my education supported a successful diplomacy career.

Thank you to His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Her Excellency the First Lady Remi Tinubu for all their support. Thank you to the President for all he’s doing for us women and the First Lady for all her support and guidance.

Thank you to my husband, the Nigeria Governors Forum Chairperson, and the Kwara state Governor for all you do for us. The Nigerian Governors’ Forum is our foremost partner, providing most of our facilities. Also, thank you to the former Chairs of the Nigerian Governors Forum and Governors Wives Forum. They’ve left behind a lot that we are now building on.

Thank you to all the MDAs, development partners and all the donor agencies that support us. We’ve done quite a lot regarding sexual and gender-based violence, nutrition, women in leadership and more because of their help. We look forward to doing a lot more in that space. As the First Lady of Kwara State, also want to thank the conglomerates that have supported me and made sure that I can give out palliatives and assist with acquisition programmes. It’s a lot, but I’d just like to thank these few people for now.

I look forward to speaking in detail about all our other partners In subsequent discussions.

And finally, thank you to my children, who love so much and who have supported me throughout my career and made sure that they were sterling kids even while worked. Thank you to all my other family members, too.

So, what are your priorities and objectives as Chairperson? How do you envision making a positive impact at the national level?

As you may well be aware, before I became the Chairperson of the Nigeria Governors Wives’ Forum, I served as the Secretary of the Forum. As such, am in tune with the projections and deliverables of the forum even before got to be at the helms of affairs at the forum. Our priority is to ensure that the most indigent among us get to feel the impact of government in all facets through deepening engagements with donor/development partners to support the efforts of our husbands, the State Governors.

These engagements include spotlighting, with the view to improving the enrolment of children of school age in schools, drawing support for the empowerment of women, girls and youths through skills acquisition for self-reliance and financial independence while sustaining our advocacy for an end to gender-based violence and strengthening protective laws as promulgated by States across the federation.

Consequently, we are committed to completing all ongoing projects of the Nigeria Governors Wives Forum and initiating new projects in accordance with the thematic areas of the forum’s interventions I. e Nutrition, Economic empowerment, drug abuse, mental health, menstrual hygiene and sexual and gender-based violence and intensify advocacy on getting fairer deals for working nursing mothers.

Also, at the forum, we work on women in leadership positions and support young women with political aspirations.

You know, there are all sorts of assumptions, but tell me, what really is the role of a First Lady in Nigeria? And what impact are they expected to have on society?

While the role of the First Lady is widely believed to be complementary to their spouses’ work, the impacts these women make in bringing succour to the indigents cannot be over-emphasised. This is evident in the successes achieved in their interventions through their respective charity initiatives. The impacts of Better Life for Rural Women, the Future Assured and the Renewed Hope Initiative, to mention a few, still lives in recent memory and encapsulates how through selfless service, first ladies have been able to stoke actions and influence decisions to ensure that women and children in particular gets closer attention on all their issues of concern. In this regard, however, I believe that First Ladies stand to make more impact going forward.

What’s the most ridiculous misconception you have heard about being a Nigerian First Lady?

I have heard near-impossible requests from people simply because you are the First Lady. While we would not let their misconceptions deter us, I go out of my way at times to enlighten such people on how we can best work to position them to benefit from the programmes and activities of the government, and that is why you will see that my skills acquisition programme is focused on positioning people to benefit from the programmes of government that promotes entrepreneurship.

Let’s talk about your work as First Lady of Kwara state. What areas have been most fulfilling for you?

I find fulfillment in every of my initiative that benefits Kwarans and complements the efforts of Governor Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq in bringing good governance to the people of the State.

The most fulfilling area is the vocational skills acquisition scheme of the Ajike people support centre (my charity initiative). Through this initiative, have seen people practically move off the poverty lines because we equip beneficiaries with skills to manage their income apart from the vocations they were taught.

The most inspiring part of this narrative is that graduates of this scheme interestingly come to us for beneficiaries to train as their way of supporting the initiative. This feat is inspiring to my team and I as the effect of our effort is not only improving the economy of our State but practically taking people out of poverty.

The Ajike People Support Center is a significant part of your charitable and humanitarian work. What are some of the projects and initiatives that were undertaken through this centre and their impact on the community?

As mentioned, our strategy at the Ajike People Support Center is impact-driven; hence, we employ citizen engagement through the needs assessment of prospective beneficiaries before training to provide tools or support. The skills acquisition and empowerment initiative draws beneficiaries from the 16 local government areas of the State. The beneficiaries are trained in a vocation of their choice, and we present tools to practice the trade after their training.

The centre has trained beneficiaries in tailoring, make-up and makeover, beads making, tie and dye, baking and confectionary and training youth farmers in the use of drone technology in their ventures, among others. While tools such as sewing machines, gas ovens, and grinding machines are presented to over thirty-five thousand beneficiaries since inception.

It may also interest you to know that we also

embarked on health outreaches to sensitise and support the care of people living with cancer. We also lead advocacies and sensitisation on immunisation, Tuberculosis, and malaria as I am a member of the Kwara State Task Force on immunisation and Primary healthcare.

The Ajike People Support Center, apart from the peopleoriented approach of its activities, equally brings to the fore how, when empowered, an individual can make a remarkable impact within the shortest possible time.

This is evident in the testimonials of beneficiaries of our empowerment initiatives, schools scholarship scheme, health outreaches, social interventions and other charity concerns, which ultimately elicit positive feedback while bridging the unemployment gap in the State. As we speak, tens of thousands of women and youth have benefitted from this scheme.

What motivated you to establish the Ajike People Support Center, and how do you see it evolving?

The Ajike Peoples Support Center was founded out of passion and sincere commitment to create economic empowerment for people through vocational skills acquisition, encourage education advancement and ensure the well-being of the people through health interventions that would be wholesome.

Since inception, we have engaged in the training and equipping of tens of thousands of women and youths with skills of their choice and providing them with work tools, providing scholarships for indigent students, supporting the health concerns of our people and leading advocacies and providing interventions on issues that concern our people.

Most of your work here emphasises women, youths, and children empowerment. Why is this particularly important to you?

Thank you for this; for the purpose of this conversation, let me reiterate that am an advocate of inclusiveness. Hence, as I drum support for women and children, I also seek the inclusion of men and boys. This is simply because men and boys are veritable partners in achieving an all-inclusive world, so the whole of humanity is particularly important to me without fear

of segregation. Women and youths, you will agree with me, form the larger percentage of our population, hence the need to appeal to their concerns.

How do you measure the impact and success of your initiatives and programs?

As I mentioned earlier, the Ajike people support centre operates on a well-thought-out strategy that sees the importance of feedback to guide our conduct and improve the scope of our interventions. In this regard, the centre engages follow-up teams to periodically pay visits to beneficiaries to learn firsthand their challenges and proffer solution that meets every reported concern.

However, our impacts and successes are measured in the lives our different initiatives have touched.

Talking about success, I’d also like to touch on longevity. Will your projects outlive your tenure as First Lady?

Very well, it sure will; as highlighted in this discussion, the Ajike People Support Center is self-sustaining, and as mentioned in the cause of this conversation, beneficiaries from our initiatives are giving back in the hope that their gestures would create a pathway for more people to be self-reliant. Remember, I told you this is borne out of sincere passion. We encourage this gesture; my office and Ajike people support centre are not resting on our oars as we continue to engage our development partners with a view to touching even more lives. So you can see that we are well structured to sustain our activities even after office.

How do you balance your role as First Lady and your personal life? Are there any specific strategies or routines you follow?

For most of my adult life, I’ve worked. So, I started work just after my Master’s Degree. And I’ve worked all my adult life, even while having children. I would finish my maternity leave and go back to work. And it was important to be able to learn how to manage my time effectively. So I work on the go in the car on my way to pick up the children in those days. If have my lunch break, might work through lunch to carve out a lot of time for myself. So sometimes what I do to be able to spend time with my children, who are now adults, by the grace of God, is to work with them. ask them a lot of questions. And that way, we’ve

turned work into fun. Over lunch, I might be working, asking questions, and involving them in my work life. Over dinner, we do some of the same things as well. So if I need to finish a work call, while need to do some other things, I would probably do it through dinner, sit with them through dinner and then get up for like 15 minutes and go and sit somewhere quietly and answer the call and come back and join them. You must be innovative in how you balance work and personal life. And it’s been good, actually. Because, you know, the children have been understanding, and they’ve worked very, very well with me in making sure that we are creative in finding time to be together.

What about time for your family? I assume it’s no longer the same. What activities or traditions are you still able to enjoy together?

I would say it is pretty much the same. As I said, we’ve always been creative with our time. And we continue to do so. My kids are grown up now. So most of the time, what we do meet now is for us to spend family time together. Have dinner, have lunch, and carve out a short holiday. And then we spend more time on the phone. With today’s technology, it’s really good, you know. You can FaceTime, talk, you know, anytime you can carve out, you make sure you keep talking to family members. And, you know, with regards to also even with my husband. He’s also always been very good with me working and, you know, carving out time to have quiet time and family time together. And I’m very grateful for this.

What would you do for a day if you were just Folake?

would do more self-care and pampering. love to spend time in the spa, not long, long hours, but I love a very good massage. I love reflexology. love facials. So I would love to have more time to do that. Also, I would love to write and read some of the books I have been meaning to. I also want to reprint some of my father’s books. As you may know, my father was a veritable author and journalist who wrote many books and plays. He used to stage plays in his days, and have a lot of his books that I’ve dusted up and want to reprint and put out there, and I have some books in me as well. I still try, though, even with this hectic schedule. I’ve promised myself to carve out a little time to finish them.

What are your aspirations and goals for the future, personally and in your role as the First Lady of Kwara State and Chairperson of the Nigeria Governors Wives’ Forum?

First and foremost, I look forward to being a senior member of the family, ensuring that you know we have all those grandparent and family functions that every woman looks forward to. I hope that, personally, I’m fulfilled in this way. Like I mentioned earlier, part time writing, being a senior member of the family, enjoying little time off with my family, and a lot of laughs, especially in the future. also hope that I remain relevant in my State and that people still call on me and look at me as the Grand Matron and Grandmother of the State and do necessary things within the State. I’ve started my educate people support centre, and plan to do that for a good number of years into the near future. We’ll be able to do more things and continue to help people.

As regards being Chairperson of the Nigeria Governor’s Wife’s forum, you already know what we’re doing today. We’re working a lot on so many things. And I hope we can carry that into the future. We currently have a role for the former chairpersons, and we’re hoping they can have some role they can continue to play in the future. That is what want to have: a role where I can still contribute, helping to map out, helping to shape and helping to look into the future as things evolve with the forum. So I think these are the things that I would like to see happen.

While the role of the First Lady is widely believed to be complementary to their spouses’ work, the impacts these women make in bringing succour to the indigents cannot be overemphasised

What is Quiet Luxury?

Quiet luxury embodies a departure from the overtly flashy and extravagant symbols of wealth that have dominated the luxury landscape for decades. Instead, it revolves around a more refined and intimate approach to indulgence, emphasising timeless elegance, high-quality materials, and exquisite craftsmanship. Rather than flaunting logos and garish designs, quiet luxury opts for subtle detailing, allowing the product’s beauty to speak for itself.

The rise of quiet luxury can be attributed to a combination of factors. As consumers become more discerning and environmentally conscious, a growing desire for sustainable and ethical products is growing.

This shift in values has led people to seek out products that are thoughtfully made, with a focus on longevity and enduring appeal. Moreover, with social media saturation and the desire to create a personal brand, many individuals now value exclusivity and uniqueness over massproduced status symbols.

Does Quiet Luxury Exist?

Some skeptics may question whether quiet luxury exists or is just a marketing ploy to sell high-priced products. However, the essence of quiet luxury goes beyond mere marketing tactics. It represents a philosophy that celebrates the artistry and craftsmanship behind each product rather than just the brand name. True, quiet luxury items are not merely status symbols; they hold intrinsic value due to the meticulous care put into their creation. In the fashion world, quiet luxury can be found in the collections of renowned designers who eschew bold logos in favour of subtler yet masterful design elements. In the realm of travel, it can be seen in boutique hotels that prioritise personalised experiences over grandiose extravagance. In art and interior design,

it surfaces through understated elegance and the use of natural, handcrafted materials.

How to Embrace Quiet Luxury:

1. Seek Timeless Pieces: Embrace items that possess a timeless quality, transcending fleeting trends. Classic designs and neutral colours can provide a sense of sophistication that endures beyond passing fads.

2. Emphasise Quality: Prioritise quality over quantity. Invest in well-crafted products made from sustainable materials built to stand the test of time.

3. Discreet Branding: Choose items with subtle or no branding, allowing the craftsmanship and design to take centre stage rather than the logo.

4. Personal Connection: Opt for experiences and products that resonate with your individual taste and values, allowing you to forge a deeper connection with what you own.

5. Mindful Consumption: Practice mindful consumption by reflecting on your purchases and their impact. Choose items that add genuine value to your life and

align with your principles.

6. Curate a Thoughtful Collection: Cultivate a collection of possessions and experiences that reflect your unique story and bring you lasting joy.

Ultimately, quiet luxury is about celebrating the whispers of opulence, appreciating the understated beauty, and finding delight in the little things that make life truly extraordinary.

BUYING YOUR FIRST DIAMOND

A new generation of jewellers are reshaping the perception of diamonds, making them accessible to young enthusiasts whose passion for luxury is grounded in how they are cherished and admired. No longer confined to red carpets and extravagant galas, diamonds have found their way into our daily lives, becoming an integral part of our conversations and self-expression. While the 4 Cs (Carat, Cut, Clarity, and Color) remain crucial in the diamond selection process, there’s more to consider when acquiring that perfect diamond piece for yourself. Here are some invaluable tips to guide you in your journey to owning your very first diamond masterpiece.

Set Out a Budget

Sparkling as they are, diamonds come with a price tag that demands careful consideration. Before embarking on your diamond-purchasing journey, define your budget. Compromising slightly on the stone’s size rather than its quality can lead you to a brilliant deal that aligns with your financial plans.

Weigh All Options

Diamonds are not the only gleaming stars in the jewellery galaxy. Consider exploring alternatives such as lab-made diamonds and precious coloured stones.

Lab-made diamonds, boasting similar quality to their mined counterparts, come with a more budget-friendly price tag. Precious coloured stones like rubies, sapphires, emeralds, and lab-made diamonds present durable and captivating alternatives that create stunning jewellery pieces in their own right.

Cut Quality is Key

While all the 4 Cs carry significance, the cut holds the crown as the most crucial aspect. A well-cut diamond can mitigate imperfections in colour and clarity, making the stone appear more radiant and larger than its carat weight would suggest. So, pay special attention to the cut, as it unlocks the Diamond’s true brilliance.

A GUIDE TO SEAMLESSLY INCORPORATING PLANTS INTO YOUR HOME DECOR

The presence of plants not only enlivens your home decor but also fosters a connection to the natural world, offering a soothing retreat from the demands of modern life. In addition, adding greenery to your living spaces brings vitality into your home, purifies the air, and enhances your well-being. So, let the green revolution begin and watch as your home blossoms into a haven of natural beauty and serenity.

Choose the Perfect Green Companions

When beginning your indoor garden adventure, selecting the right plants that complement your living space and lifestyle is essential. Opt for low-maintenance plants like succulents or snake plants if you have a busy schedule, or go for a variety of leafy plants such as pothos, ferns, or peace lilies if you have more time to devote to plant care. Remember to consider the lighting conditions in each room, as some plants thrive in bright sunlight, while others prefer shade.

Elevate with Stylish Planters

Price Determined by Carat

Knowing your desired carat range before stepping into the diamond store will protect you from overshooting your budget. Carat weight significantly impacts the Diamond’s price, with larger carat stones generally commanding a higher price.

Keep Colour and Clarity Simple

When it comes to colour and clarity, simplicity is your guide. Diamonds either exude colourless brilliance or showcase some hue, and their clarity is either flawless or exhibits slight imperfections. Trust your eyes when choosing a diamond, focusing on what you can see and appreciate rather than fixating on grades that might seem overwhelming and indistinguishable.

With these tips in hand, you can confidently embark on your journey to find the perfect diamond piece that resonates with your unique style and celebrates the everlasting allure of these magnificent gems.

Transform your plants into eyecatching decor elements by housing them in chic and artistic planters. From handcrafted ceramic pots to modern geometric plant stands, there’s a vast array of options to suit your personal taste and interior design theme. Mix and match different textures, colours, and sizes for an eclectic and visually stunning display.

Create Vertical Green Spaces

If you’re limited on floor space, think vertically! Install floating shelves, hanging planters, or wall-mounted plant racks to utilise your walls as vertical gardens. This maximises space and adds a touch of whimsy and depth to your decor. Choose cascading plants like ivy or philodendron to create an enchanting green tapestry.

Incorporate Plants into Your Furniture

Unleash your creativity by integrating plants into your furniture pieces. Place a few succulents or small potted plants on your coffee table as a natural centrepiece, or consider investing in a dining table with a built-in planter at its centre. Additionally, floating shelves with built-in planters can serve as a beautiful room divider while providing an abundance of greenery.

Embrace Indoor Herb Gardens

Infuse your home with the delightful aroma of fresh herbs by creating an indoor herb garden in your kitchen. Place small pots of basil, mint, rosemary, and thyme on your windowsill or kitchen counter. Not only will you have easy access to fresh herbs for your culinary creations, but you’ll also enjoy the delightful sight of greenery while cooking.

Go Big with Statement Plants

Incorporate large statement plants like the fiddle-leaf fig, monstera, or rubber plant into your decor for a bold and dramatic touch. These grand beauties purify the air and become a captivating focal point in any room. Showcase them near entryways, in corners, or beside your favourite reading nook to create a sense of lush paradise.

Think Outside the Pot

Explore unique and unexpected ways to display your plants. Vintage birdcages, repurposed wooden crates, glass terrariums, or even hanging macrame planters add a touch of bohemian elegance to your living space. Remember, the sky’s the limit when it comes to creativity!
