y Cover personality Olatowun Candide Johnson is a remarkable lady who is at the helm of an extraordinary endeavour – Gaia Africa Club. This exclusive club, tailored for the distinguished and experienced woman, offers more than just a networking opportunity. It provides a sanctuary where powerful women unite to create meaningful impacts in their personal and professional lives. You know, the ethos of Gaia Club resonates deeply with me, echoing a belief I’ve always held dear: “A woman alone has power; collectively, we have impact.” This statement embodies the spirit of the club and challenges the prevailing myth that powerful women don’t support one another. For too long, women have been conditioned to see each other as competitors, especially in professional arenas where opportunities at the top seemed scarce. This mindset, we now understand, is flawed and counterproductive. The truth is, when we lift each other up, embracing the strength of collaboration, we don’t just alter the dynamics of power – we also find greater joy and fulfillment in our achievements. The idea that women do not support other women needs to be reversed. And I tell you, research upon research underscores the benefits women reap from collaboration over competition. It’s been proven time and again. This principle is not just theoretical for me; it’s a lived experience. Looking back at my journey, I can confidently say that a significant part of my accomplishments can be attributed to the support of incredible women around me. Their encouragement, guidance, and belief in my potential have been instrumental in shaping my path. To quote Madeleine Albright, “There is a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women.” For me, I’d say, “There is a special place in heaven for women who support other women.” For every woman reading this, as you go about your week, I urge you to remember the power of unity and support among us. Let’s strive to be the women who lift each other up, break stereotypes, and pave the way for a future where collaboration and mutual support are the norms, not the exceptions. Wishing you all a wonderful and empowering week ahead!

THESE SIX NIGERIANS ARE FEATURED ON THE BOF500’S CLASS OF 2023 LIST If the global fashion world were a kingdom, then BoF (Business of Fashion) would be its gospel, the authoritative voice that the fashion elite look to, and the mirror reflecting the industry’s heartbeat. The BoF500 list, a revered catalogue of the industry’s mavens, is akin to the annual roll call of fashion royalty. And guess what? 2023 saw a sprinkle of Nigerian magic on this esteemed list: six awe-inspiring Nigerians making waves, breaking barriers, and redefining fashion norms on the global stage.

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR HANDBAGS Caring for your bags can be as delightful as the first day you swung them over your shoulder, full of excitement and promise. Just as you’d pamper a treasured pet or tend to a lush garden, your bags – be they high-end designer pieces or the trusty tote that’s seen you through thick and thin – deserve that same level of devotion. They are silent witnesses to your life’s adventures, carriers of your secrets (and snacks), and bold statements of your unique style By Funke Babs-Kufeji

Adeju Thompson

When you think of outof-this-world fashion, Adeju Thompson›s Lagos Space Programme might just pop into your mind. Thompson›s vibrant journey into fashion is nothing short of spellbinding. He has weaved a luxurious label that doesn›t just defy gender norms but stands tall in its non-binary brilliance. Remember 2023›s dazzling International Woolmark Prize winner? Yep, that was Thompson›s brainchild making waves. But the tale started even before, back in 2018, when Thompson challenged fashion›s very fabric (pun intended!) by unveiling ungendered collections whenever inspiration struck instead of following the typical fashion calendar. This audacity caught the eyes of the global fashion elite, rocketing him to finalist status for the LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers in 2021.

Burna Boy

is undeniable. This Grammy-winning prodigy has not only scorched the music charts but has also painted the town red with collaborations with chic brands like Burberry, Kenzo, and Boohoo.

Elizabeth Isiorho

Enter Elizabeth Isiorho, the powerhouse who saw a dreamy runway in Nigeria’s rich landscape and made it a reality. While his beats send shockwaves across the globe, his fashion sense is an equally electrifying spectacle. With the soul of Port Harcourt and the flair of Lagos, Burna Boy’s Afro-fusion tunes have made him a household name, and guess what? The fashion moguls are tapping their feet to his melody, too! With Instagram and TikTok followers running into millions, his influence

stunners like Mayowa Nicholas and Nyagua Ruea, Isiorho is a force undeniably reshaping the modelling universe.

Yinka Ash

Every fashionista in Lagos knows Yinka Ash’s AshLuxury. It’s the sparkling gem in the Lekki crown, enticing everyone from Afrobeats sensations to Nollywood’s finest. Yinka began his sartorial saga as a personal shopper and has blended luxury with streetwear, crafting a brand that’s not just a label but a statement. Walk into his minimalist boutique, and you’re greeted by a mesmerizing ensemble of global brands, all curated with an eagle’s eye. And if you’re on the hunt for an emblem of urban chic,

Ash’s very own brand, AshLuxe, will make your heart skip a beat.

Clint 419

Picture London’s edgy streets and imagine a brand capturing its raw, unfiltered essence. That’s Clint’s Corteiz for you. Born from British-Nigerian roots, Clint’s fashion venture is a heady cocktail of London’s grunge and Nigerian zest. The Alcatraz-emblazoned logo of Corteiz has become a street symbol, with fans playing treasure hunts on passwordlocked websites and queuing up for exclusive releases. The fashion

twist? In 2023, from being in legal crosshairs with Nike over a trademark tiff, Corteiz pivoted to collaborating with the shoe giant, dropping some killer Air Max 95 designs. Oh, and did we mention the nod from the British Fashion Council? Watch out, world; Corteiz is on the prowl!

Gabriel Moses

Though London is where he crafts his art, Gabriel’s heart beats in sync with Nigeria’s vibrant rhythm. Collaborating with brands like Adidas and Dior and artists like Little Simz and Skepta, Gabriel’s lens magnifies tales of identity, rich culture, and cherished memories. Whether it’s a feature in Harper’s Bazaar or a tribute exhibition like “Regina” at 180 Studios, Moses’s work is a canvas where dreams, nostalgia, and raw emotion collide.

Use Dust Bags

Imagine each of your bags slipping into a soft, cotton embrace every time you tuck them away. Dust bags are the unsung heroes of the accessory world, providing a protective cocoon that keeps your companions safe from the scratches and scuffs of the world. Make it a ritual, a final flourish of care after a day out, like tucking a child into bed.

Think of your bag care routine as brewing a magical potion. You wouldn’t splash your fragrance directly onto a silk scarf, would you? Treat your bags with the same consideration. Keep them away from lotions, potions, and perfumes that can tarnish their charm. And when those inevitable stains and smudges appear, turn to specialised elixirs crafted for the luxurious fabrics that clothe your bags. Raindrops may be the music of nature, but they can also be a bag’s worst nightmare. Protect your bags as you would from a spell of bad weather – with care and precaution.

Declutter and Organise

Bag care is a journey that goes beyond the tangible; it’s almost ritualistic. Little actions can make a whole lot of difference when it comes to caring for your handbags. Protect your bags from fragrances and lotions by avoiding immediate contact. Use specialist solutions designed exclusively for luxury material to handle stains and colour transfers sensitively. Avoid direct contact with water, especially during the rainy season, as it can permanently damage your bag.

The Art of Bag Gallery Storage

Your collection of bags should be displayed like the masterpieces they are. Forget about boxing them up – let them live freely on shelves, divided and upright like books in a library, each with its own story. Use decorative hooks that serve as a functional storage solution and a way to showcase your bags as the works of art they are. But be mindful of the straps – they are the lifelines of your bags. Hanging them should be a delicate balance, a blend of aesthetic pleasure and structural integrity.

OLATOWUN

CANDIDE-JOHNSON Changing Stereotypes

Olatowun Candide-Johnson is a powerhouse of dedication and tenacity, channelling over three decades of expertise in corporate and commercial law, business development, and governance into the entrepreneurial realm. She stands at the helm of Gaia Africa, a sanctuary she crafted for distinguished and enterprising women—a place where they can connect, conduct business, invest, and foster robust work-life alliances. Her leadership at Gaia Africa is more than just running a club; it’s a movement propelling women to the vanguard of the business world and reshaping the corporate landscape. In this interview with Funke Babs-Kufeji, Candide-Johnson unveils the strides Gaia Africa has made under her guidance over five years. She delves into the nuances of women’s roles in business with a candour that’s as refreshing as it is insightful, painting a vivid picture of the club’s journey and its profound impact on its members. This is a tale of more than just business—it’s about carving a space where women’s voices and talents are amplified, their achievements are celebrated, and their collective power is unstoppable. You have worked many years as a corporate and commercial lawyer in multinational corporations’ business development and governance. Tell us what your experience led to setting up and establishing GAIA AFRICA, a private members business club for women. I observed that successful women were not connecting for business even though they connected on many other levels. This meant that there was a gap - it was and still is important for women to connect - and build trust - and once that is established, anything is possible. It is important for women to talk about what they do when they connect. Without this, it is difficult to understand if there are any synergies to unearth… but when we know – the magic happens. I worked in Corporate organisations for more than 20 years, but it was only after I turned that page and tried to raise funds for my first project that I realised two things: (1) the importance of people: without a network, it is very hard to do anything. (2) the dearth of women investors: I didn’t come across any women investors when I was trying to raise money, and even though there must have been such women in 2017, they were hardly visible. So, my journey even outside the corporate world continues to prove the necessity of my present mission. Who is an ideal GAIA woman, and what are the criteria for joining GAIA AFRICA? The ideal GAIA Woman is experienced, culturally, and socially cosmopolitan and is a female leader who has achieved impact and success in her chosen field. She is open to giving and receiving knowledge and is looking to expand her impact while ensuring she is truly “living” with peers who understand her. She is an experienced C-suite executive or business founder, a senior professional from any industry (including the creative industry), a senior public officer, or a Portfolio board member. GAIA AFRICA was established to serve female decision-makers, a much-overlooked demographic. It might be said that ‘’you’re already there - what else do you want’’? And yet, this demographic needs particular attention and support. It can be very “lonely at the top”! I believe strongly that this is also a demographic that can make the quickest impact. They are, after all, the people who make the material decisions. And so, while GAIA caters to that select leading and experienced woman looking to establish bonds for impact in her life and business, she should be ready and willing to be vulnerable with other women, open to say what she wants and be ready to receive. These members are called EMERALD. We have recently opened a new category of members called RUBY. Ruby is a uniquely crafted expansion of GAIA AFRICA to capture Africa’s leading women who are currently corporate senior managers, start-up entrepreneurs, professionals from various fields, etc. Ruby members have less experience than Emerald members but are going to the same heights. Tell us what the vision is for GAIA AFRICA. The vision is “To contribute to the socio-economic growth and transformation of Africa by empowering women to organise around the principles of female leadership and participation in business”. This is our way of contributing to closing the gender economic gap. The more women support and sponsor each other, the more we grow our financial capacity and can make an impact.

14

Since it was established, what have you achieved regarding women in leadership roles in Nigeria and Africa? Quite apart from the fact that members are connecting with one other and building solid relationships, they have travelled together, are doing business together and are recommending each other for business and board seats. They are also resolving problems for each other through mastermind groups or our Needs & Leads sessions. Members are also investing together. There is plenty of peer-to-peer mentoring, and this is of great benefit. Finally, members have come together to mentor younger women through our ‘Gazelles Series’ - they have also supported specific projects, for example, full sponsorship of 2 female authors and one female illustrator of children’s books to the Accra World Book Capital 2023 earlier this year. Five years into launching GAIA AFRICA and two years into opening your clubhouse, what challenges have you faced, and how have you been able to overcome them? Great question!! The elephant in the room is CASH and access to FUNDING! Without this, it is a struggle!! And we are limited in what we can do in terms of hiring, marketing, programming and growth. This means, for example, that we are unable to reach several women in our target demographic who have never even heard of GAIA AFRICA and for those that may have heard, some associate the club with the clubhouse (and may lose interest if, say, they live out of Lagos or outside Nigeria) and not the community. GAIA is, first and foremost, a strong community of powerful women with a growing network outside of Nigeria. We meet these challenges with resolve, one day at a time. Operational costs are high for most hospitality companies with real estate. But 2023 has been a year like no other. Our operational costs have skyrocketed; consumer habits have changed, spending is low, etc. The monthly cost of power & diesel alone is ridiculous. An alternative energy solution requires a large amount of CAPEX (back to more money). It is important to say that it would be very helpful if Nigerians were deliberate about supporting and patronising Nigerian-owned/run MSMEs. Unlike other symbiotic business communities, we find that Nigerian people prefer to be seen in upscale restaurants, which present a ‘foreign face’. Apart from GAIA AFRICA, I run another brand called GABY LAGOS, a Mediterranean-inspired and evolved fusion restaurant with a unique menu. Gaby Lagos is a world-class restaurant for the epicurean - food and drink enthusiasts and culinary adventurers! In addition, GABY Lagos hosts live music with dinner, two Thursdays every month, a Supper Club once a month and High Tea also once a month! It’s a restaurant like no other, and I am proud to say so. Gaby Lagos is located on the ground floor of the The more clubhouse and has its own entrance because it is open to the public and not just to members of GAIA women support AFRICA. I am mentioning this to hope that more and sponsor people know it exists and will be encouraged to visit! each other, the Speaking about women in business and the workspace, you worked for over 25 years for multinationals. Tell us what your experience was regarding gender equality in the workspace. In a few words? There are just not enough women.

The pipeline of women leaders in the corporate space must be built with intention. And then, companies must act on their diversity and Inclusion (D&I) policies to ensure that they retain women by treating them fairly and equally. It is a biological fact that women will bear children. This does not make it necessary or justify the relegation of women to the side-lines of business. It is also a fact that women have combined this necessity with high industry and leadership across sectors. In its ‘Women in the Workplace’ 2022 report, McKinsey refers to the ‘broken rung’. The term refers to a broken step on the corporate ladder, which becomes an obstacle that women face when trying to succeed in the corporate world. The concept suggests that women are unable to break through entry-level management roles and get promoted to higher levels, getting trapped in lowerlevel positions. The broken rung phenomenon results from systemic and cultural issues that pervade many workplaces. Despite the progress toward gender equality, women continue to face challenges in ascending to leadership roles. This is a problem that companies must address. I also think that when women drop out after 10-15 years of working, they find it difficult to get back into the corporate environment because companies often seek young recruits and rarely take on experienced 45-year-olds. This is a big mistake as they are missing out on all the experience these women can bring in. Also, the more women there are on company boards, the better the pipeline for leadership if that board has Human Capital on their radar (as it should). I could say a lot more, and in fact, we explored this topic during the first 2022 five-video podcast series based on McKinsey’s Power of Parity Report. I would recommend watching or listening to the series, which can be found on the GAIA AFRICA YouTube Channel or Spotify.

better governance, better financial results, more inclusiveness, and diversity of skills and experience, it is essential to have more women in senior management and on boards. The same is true for politics and government. More women leaders are needed to improve the ‘society’ we live in.

As a woman entrepreneur, what are the main challenges facing women entrepreneurs in Nigeria, and what should be done? This will be a long one. There are several challenges facing women entrepreneurs in Nigeria. Like very limited access to finance: Difficulty accessing loans and financial services due to limited collateral, restrictive lending policies, and cultural biases. I was once asked why my husband can’t just fund my business since, quite clearly, I should not be looking for a loan or perhaps even doing business! I was horrified. I have also been asked (when looking for property) questions like, ‘Is there no ‘man’ in your business?’in short ~ I had no business looking for property or perhaps even doing business. Leave it to the men. This is shocking indeed in this century. Then there are Socio-cultural barriers: Traditional gender roles and societal expectations can limit opportunities for women, as they are often expected to prioritise family and household responsibilities over career and business pursuits. Women are themselves socialised first to be carers before anything else. So, to explore the business terrain, we must first break out of that mindset. Lack of business skills: Many women lack formal business education and training, hindering their ability to develop essential skills and knowledge required for effective business management. I returned to school at the age of 51 to successfully complete the TRIUM Executive MBA – This is an executive MBA jointly awarded by three schools: London School of Economics and Politics Science (LSE), New York University Leonard, N The desire to see women Stern of Business (NYU/Stern) and École des Would you say that there has been a Hautes Études Commerciales’ (HEC (Paris). What can be done? To address these challenges requires a multi-faceted approach, including policy reforms, targeted educational programs, greatly improved access to finance, and the promotion from the Government and the Legislature of gender equality and empowerment through policy and the law. Why do you think it is important to invest in women entrepreneurs? I discussed this in a recent keynote address, which I delivered at last month’s 2023 Veuve Clicquot BOLD Women Awards. Investing in women entrepreneurs is not only the right thing to do from an ethical standpoint, it also makes perfect business sense. It drives economic growth, innovation, and social impact and contributes to a more equal and inclusive world. It improves economic growth and job creation and increases innovation and diversity: Women bring fresh perspectives, experiences, and ideas to the table. Diverse perspectives lead to more creative and inclusive solutions, which drive business success. Investing in women entrepreneurs is a step toward closing the gender gap, achieving gender equality and closing the gender economic gap. It allows women to be financially independent, take control of their lives, and become community leaders. It increases social impact -Women entrepreneurs often prioritise social impact in their businesses, focusing on areas such as education, healthcare, environmental sustainability, and community development. Investing in these businesses has a multiplier effect - it creates positive change and addresses societal challenges.

INDOOR PLANTS: NATURE’S AIR PURIFIERS It’s always so easy to get caught up in the hustle and forget the importance of self-care. But remember that treating yourself to something special can be a powerful act of selflove. So, why not explore a world of self-care through these ten delightful gifts that promise to enhance your mental and overall well-being?

You are an effective female leader. What drives you? The desire to see women take their place in leadership - of society, business, politics and government. We must remember that women are half of our population and half the world. They must have their say in how we are governed and what affects us daily. What changes in attitudes and business practices do you think are needed to facilitate work-life integration? I think that we need to strengthen our work ethic. Too many employees want a job just to receive a salary at the end of the month. And so, there’s a constant struggle to balance employer and employee needs. If employees work efficiently /productively- I do not doubt that the employer would be better able and will find it much easier to provide an environment that helps the employee balance work and life. The employer wants the same! What key lessons have you learned as someone who has successfully combined family life and career advancement? You need SUPPORT! I was very lucky that I could rely on my mother, my mother-in-law and my sisters and brother - and of course, I’m married to a super supportive husband who is my greatest cheerleader. No man is an island - we need a support system that we can trust completely. You can’t be in two places simultaneously unless you can teleport or have a clone … we’re not there yet, but maybe soon... What message would you give to younger women who want to take up leadership roles and become entrepreneurs? Work hard, re-skill and upskill. Read widely. Find your community of supporters. Have a vision and remain hyper-focused on that vision until it becomes a reality. You recently turned 60 but don’t look anything like it, and it seems more and more women are not looking their age anymore. Please tell us what you think is responsible for this and how you have maintained your figure and looks. Thank you for the kind compliment. I think the modern woman is more mindful and intentional about how she looks and eats. Women have taken to exercising regularly and take their health checks seriously. This is of paramount importance. I have exercised all my life. I played netball, rounders and hockey at school and dabbled in gymnastics also at school. I played squash in college and used the gym ‘religiously’ for several years. Now, I do Pilates and yoga, and I play tennis.

These plants are highly effective in removing harmful pollutants like benzene, carbon monoxide, and xylene from the air. Their long, arching leaves with white stripes make them a visually appealing addition to any indoor space.

Rubber Plant Rubber plants are popular indoor plants known for their large, glossy leaves. Aside from their aesthetic appeal, rubber plants are excellent air purifiers, effectively removing formaldehyde. These plants thrive in bright, indirect light and can be a statement piece in any room.

Snake Plant The snake plant is the perfect choice if you’re looking for a low-maintenance indoor plant that also acts as an air purifier. This plant is known for its ability to convert carbon dioxide into oxygen during the night, making it an ideal choice for bedrooms. Plan Regular Visits Nothing beats spending real-life time with your friends. Plan visits to each other’s cities or meet at a mutually convenient location. These reunions provide an opportunity to create lasting memories and give you something to look forward to. By scheduling regular meetups, you can maintain the closeness and keep the flame of friendship alive. Engage in Shared Activities Even though you may be miles apart, you can still engage in activities together. Start a book club, watch the same TV series or movies, or participate in online courses together. Sharing common interests and experiences will strengthen your bond and give you something to talk about, making your long-distance friendship feel more tangible. Surprise Each Other Surprises are a wonderful way to show your friends how much you care. Send unexpected gifts, handwritten letters, or care packages with their favourite treats. Small gestures can go a long way in making your friends feel loved and appreciated, even from a distance. The element of surprise adds excitement and keeps the friendship fresh and vibrant.

THE

SURVIV By Dr. Kemi DaSilva-Ibru

Dear Reader, Welcome to the WARIF Survivor Stories Series, a monthly feature, where stories of survivors of rape and sexual violence are shared to motivate and encourage survivors to speak their truth without the fear of judgment or stigmatization and to educate the public on the sheer magnitude of this problem in our society. The Women at Risk International Foundation (WARIF) is a non-profit organization set up in response to the extremely high incidence of rape, sexual violence, and human trafficking of young girls and women in our society. WARIF is tackling this issue through a holistic approach that covers health, education, and community service initiatives. WARIF aids survivors of rape and sexual violence through the WARIF Centre - a haven where trained professionals are present full time, 6 days a week including public holidays to offer immediate medical care, forensic medical examinations, psycho-social counseling, and welfare services which include shelter, legal aid, and vocational skills training. These services are provided FREE of charge to any survivor who walks into the Centre. My First Experience was RAPE……. During my formative years, I tragically lost my mother, leaving me as the sole child of my father and mother. After several years, my father remarried, taking Aunt Irene as his wife, and making her my stepmother. Initially, she feigned care and concern for me, which endeared her to my dad. However, within a few months of their marriage, she underwent a profound change. She began subjecting me to emotional and verbal abuse, and it wasn’t long before she turned to physical abuse, using any slight opportunity to inflict harm, especially when my dad was away at work. Despite enduring this hardship, I refrained from revealing the truth to my father, fearing that I might become the reason for a breakdown in his marriage to my stepmother. However, he eventually noticed my fluctuating moods and insisted that I confide in him. Reluctantly, I opened up and revealed the entirety of my painful experiences. My father, overwhelmed with sadness, decided to confront Aunt Irene, and express his deep disappointment in her actions. This confrontation triggered a chaotic situation, shattering the peace in our home. Aunt Irene, in response, insisted that I leave the house. By this time, she had already given birth to three children, my stepsiblings, with my father. Although my father loved me dearly, he felt compelled to agree to her demand for the sake of restoring peace. He contacted his younger sister, whom I affectionately called Mummy John, and who resided in Lagos. She graciously offered to take me in and live with her family in Lagos. In August 2018, I made the journey to Lagos. Mummy John was in a blissful marriage with two young children of her own. As soon as I arrived, she promptly enrolled me in a secondary school to complete my WAEC examinations, as I had been in SS3 when I left the village. It was like a dream come true, as I received loving care from every member of their family. I dedicated myself to my studies, achieving distinctions in all my papers. I also successfully took the JAMB and secured admission to study Computer Science at a prestigious university in Nigeria. During my second year at the university, we had to return home due to an ASUU strike. It was during this time that I discovered Mummy John was pregnant, and I was filled with joy, hoping for a baby girl to join her two sons. When my aunt mummy John’s EDD came, she told me to remain at home with her two sons to take care of them while she left in the company of her husband and close friend. I was told by my aunt’s friend who was always calling home to check up on me and the boys that my aunt had to undergo a Caesarean section (CS) before she delivered because she had a protracted labour, and the doctors advised Caesarean section (CS) to preserve her life and that of the baby. Unfortunately for me, while my aunt was in labour, my aunt’s husband Daddy John as I call him came back home that night, and he came into my room. I asked if he needed anything and to my surprise, he asked me to remove my clothes

RS

and I refused. Daddy John forcefully removed my clothes, threw me on the bed and raped me. When he finished, he threatened to kill me if I ever told anyone he had forceful sexual intercourse with me. I kept hoping it was a dream but alas, it wasn’t, as there were blood stains on the bedsheets because I had never had sexual intercourse before in my life. I had vowed to preserve my virginity until I married. While I was still in pain, I began contemplating suicide, and I lost my appetite and sense of dignity. I was also experiencing flashbacks throughout the day but to my surprise, Daddy John came again the next day and raped me again a second time and he did the same thing the third night making it three times, perpetrator Daddy John raped me. Upon my aunt’s eventual discharge from the hospital, she proved to be a perceptive person who could readily discern the change in my demeanour. She consistently inquired about the reasons behind my mood swings, and even though I attempted to feign happiness, it was apparent to her that I was not well. My fear of the threats I had received kept me from opening up to her. Unbeknownst to me, she covertly arranged for my father to visit her home, which, in turn, gave me the courage to finally disclose the harrowing truth. I recounted the entire ordeal to my father, who then relayed the information to my aunt. Mummy John, enraged by the revelations, took immediate action by contacting the police to report the incident. At the police station, we were subsequently referred to the WARIF Centre. Within the confines of the WARIF Centre, I underwent a comprehensive medical evaluation, received necessary treatment, and participated in counselling sessions, all provided free of charge. The professionalism and dedication of the centre’s staff were exemplary and deserving of commendation. Although I felt very sad and was also contemplating suicide, after the counselling sessions, I felt better and grateful for life, and I understood that it would have been worse if I did not summon the courage to open up. The counsellor helped me to understand that it was not my fault that the perpetrator was to blame for raping me. I might have lost my virginity but not my life and with life there’s hope hence my hope and courage were restored through the counselling sessions. During my recent session with the counsellor at the Centre, I felt mentally and psychologically balanced to take on the world and achieve my goals. Despite the pressure mounted on my aunt (mummy John) by her husband’s family to settle the case out of court, my aunt insisted that she cannot allow him to rape me and go unpunished and she did not know she had been married to a rapist all her life and hence, he needed to be punished for the crimes committed against me. The case was charged to court and my uncle was sentenced to prison for raping me. It’s been 2 years now and my aunt and children have gone for therapy sessions, and they are doing well mentally and psychologically. My aunt (mummy John) has expanded her clothing business, and she is now a known advocate against Gender-based Violence against young girls. I am in my final year with a first-class grade point. Less, I forget, I attended the monthly group therapy session at WARIF Centre, and it helped to build my sense of belonging and self-esteem and I know I am not alone. I am living a transformed life. Many thanks to the WARIF Team! *Real name of the survivor changed for confidentiality
