TIPS ON WEARING SLIT SKIRTS PG 22

Come Dec 5-12th, we will feature 30 of Africa’s designers under 30! ARISE FASHION WEEK has decided to introduce Africa’s New Stars in the Fashion industry. For any player in this field, it is a known fact that the industry is a cutthroat business and without dogged determination and hard work, you can easily be overwhelmed and shoved aside. With this business, the back-story is far from glamorous! There is a lot more than meets the eye because with every creation churned out, there are many man hours spent in bringing it to live. From the sketch book, to the pattern cutter before ending up with the machinist. All these roles cost money and if not done properly, affects the outlook of the final outcome of the finished garment. Many young upcoming designers have great ideas but because some of them cannot afford the experienced hands need to execute their designs properly or cannot afford the quality of fabric, their designs are sometimes shortchanged in terms of quality and production. Regardless, some of these young designers are still able to churn out good designs within their limited budgets and sell for much cheaper and affordable prices. With this in mind, it is very welcome news that AFW has chosen to not only showcase 30 under 30 designers, there is also a cash reward of $500,000 to be shared amongst some lucky participants of the competition. Naturally, these prices will vary according to positions won but more importantly, these monies will come in handy in the growth of their various businesses. The show will be a turning moment for our young designers and will provide the needed uplift in terms of exposure and experience. Selected judges, globally recognized for their roles in the fashion industry will be on ground to pick their winners making the winning positions a well earned one. Given how tough the year 2020 has been, where the fear of uncertainty of the future looms ahead of us, in this edition, we also feature the need to think of new starts and search for a New Gold Dream. We feature the possibility of getting a second passport with 154 country visa free travel, in the warmth of a welcoming Caribbean island of St Kitts & Nevis. Home away from home where tranquility is second to none. Instagram: @thisdaystyle | Twitter: @thisdaystyleon | Instagram: @thisdaystyle | Website: www.thisdaystyle.ng

What are the benefits?

It can take just 60 days for you and your family to receive your citizenship and St Kitts & Nevis passports. There are no restrictions on dual nationality, so there is no need to give up other citizenships. St Kitts & Nevis also has a highly favorable tax regime that includes zero personal income tax, zero BONITS TEAM inheritance tax and zero gift tax. In addition to our warm and welcoming Caribbean culture, St Kitts & Nevis is a gateway geography. We are a respected independent financial center that is highly connected to global markets. Our islands are the ideal place to secure a lasting legacy for your family. CHRISTOPHE HARBOUR SUPERYACHT MARINA

With a St Kitts & Nevis passport we can help you achieve your global ambitions • A gateway geography: a St Kitts & Nevis passport grants visa free access to 155+ countries • An exemplary service: highly personal citizenship by investment and trust services management • A warm and welcoming Caribbean culture: based on St Kitts & Nevis, picture perfect islands

Citizenship by investment? An interview with the team at Bank of Nevis International Trust Services Inc (BONITS). What is citizenship by investment? Citizenship to St Kitts & Nevis for you and your family can be secured through investment in the country’s sustainable growth fund or through whole or fractional property ownership. When property ownership is chosen as the preferred route, you can also benefit from rental income. We have price points that suit a broad spectrum of investors. Citizenship by investment starts from US$150,000 for a family of four. Why now? The year 2020 has been a year like no other. one has lost their life to this terrible disease. However, from this vantage point we see, feel, and understand what people are going through around the world. This year has made people more determined than ever to tie-up loose ends, to focus on the ones they love, and to try to define what kind of future they want for themselves and for their families. Our business is one that brings hope, rings the joy of a new start and the possibility of a New Gold Dream.

Where can you travel on a St Kitts & Nevis passport? With a St Kitts & Nevis passport you can travel visa free to more than 155 countries around the world, including the United Kingdom, European Union, Russia, and Hong Kong. How easy is it to get to St Kitts & Nevis? How connected is the country? There is direct air access to multiple destinations in North America, the United Kingdom, European Union, and other markets, served by some of the world’s leading airlines. However, should you prefer a private charter, we would be happy to assist. Why choose BONITS? We are an accredited International Marketing Agent, an accredited Service Provider, and an accredited Escrow Agent. We are the only one-stop solution. Others are ‘hawking’ passport and citizenship opportunities for a commission, whereas we work closely with our global clients to meet their exacting needs. We recognize that no one size fits all and understand that a second passport is not a luxury but a necessity for many, especially given the levels of strife and conflict in certain parts of the world. Parents want the best for their families and to secure the best future for their children. Businesspeople want the flexibility that visa free travel allows. At work they talk the language of immediacy, so when they say, “I’ll be in Paris tomorrow for the meeting”, they do not have time to scramble around for a visa.

MUDI RE-LAUNCH BY FUNKE BABS-KUFE JI

Designer extraordinaire, Mudiagha Enajemo fondly referred to as Mudi recently re-launched his eponymous fashion brand in Abuja MUDI at a new and ultra sleek location in the highbrow area of Wuse II. The event not only attracted heavy weights from major sectors of the society but also went a long way in redefining the true essence of the Capital City as a major magnet for fashion and glamour. The event had in attendance legendary Actor and Media Entrepreneur Richard Mofe Damijo who happens to be muse for the brand as Chairman of the occasion and was co-chaired by the Honourable Minister of State for Health Senator Onanimbe Mamora. They were ably supported by Honourable Minister of State for Labour, Barrister Festus Keyamu who at the event in a very lighthearted banter took the crowd down memory lane, regaling them with stories of his own in Ughelli where he and Mudi trudged the streets with reckless abandon. The event, which Mudi describes as a rebirth of the Abuja store, was well received by the Abuja scene that used the occasion as an opportunity to mix and mingle in class and style. Mudi played the great host entertaining all who came with canapés and cocktails in a comfortable shopping environment while they networked among themselves.

The classic polka-dot print has never gone out of style. Just like stripes, polka dots will always be trending, as they’re timeless prints that look good on anybody. For starters, polka dots will look great with any sold-coloured clothing item. Polka dots are also a great pick if you want to mix and match prints. Playful polka dot fashion statements are fluid, sophisticated and surprisingly versatile for wearing to work, going out with friends, and dressing up on dates.

FISAYO

LONGE

Fisayo Longe is the creative director and founder of Kai Collective, known for the iconic Gaia mesh design that has been seen on likes of It-girl Temi Otedola, rapper Saweetie and every fashionista worth her salt. She is also a mega influencer and a fashion icon known for her blog Mirror Me, which acted as her creative outlet while she was working in Finance. She uses it not only to document edgy clothes but also to capture memorable moments during her travels and to aid others with their journey towards personal development and branding. In this interview, she walks us through her journey in the fashion industry and her expectations for the future.

What made you decide to take it seriously and make a career out of it? I started my fashion and travel blog in January 2012 as a hobby and to have somewhere to document my travels during my gap year but became very heavily emotionally invested in it after that. Later that year, I discovered that I could make an income from it, albeit very little. I kept having fun with it but realized over the years, how much it inspired me. Brands were increasingly reaching out to me and offering payment. I absolutely loved the work I was doing, but I still didn’t realize that I wanted it to be my full-time career. I am a very passionate person and also quite ‘serious’ about whatever I am focused on at the moment, so I was always going to do it to the best of my ability even before deciding to make a full-time career out of it. I decided to make a career out of it when I decided to start Kai. I’ve always seen my blog as a vehicle to do more rather than a final destination. Let’s talk about your brand Kai, did being a fashion influencer help with the launch of your label and what has it taught you so far about the business? Yes, being a fashion influencer helped me with an audience to launch Kai but I also learned in the same breath, that it was simply not enough. I was disappointed with the reception when Kai launched because I thought that with my audience, there would be a huge reception and that the brand would thrive from launch day but that did not happen for years after launch. That taught me the importance of building community. I had an audience but not necessarily a community. How has your style evolved since you began your label? I buy less and wear my clothes more. I’m the queen

of repeating clothes, and I believe in buying only items you truly love and will wear repeatedly. Kai means strong and unbreakable which is empowering, is that how you want the women who wear your clothes feel? For sure. Most of all, I want women to feel confident and like their most powerful selves. I want them to feel limitless and to be inspired to reject all societal gender norms and expectations. I want them to be whoever they want and do whatever they want.

How did you get interested in fashion? I have been interested in fashion and the clothes I wear for as long as I can remember. However, my interest in fashion peaked when I stumbled upon Tumblr in December 2011. I spent so much time on Tumblr. It was true escapism for me and just a world of beautiful fashion in a way that I hadn’t seen before. I discovered fashion blogs shortly after that and was inspired to start mine.

THISDAY Style Vol. 22, No. 9334 Sunday, November 29, 2020

“I had an audience but not necessarily a community”

What was the inspiration behind your Gaia mesh design? I decided that I wanted to create prints for Kai and reached out to Adebusola Ekoko of Grapes Pattern Bank, who creates fantastic prints. I sent her a mood board, and we had a phone conversation. She knew the colours and vibe I wanted to work with and later told me that what eventually came to be known as the Gaia print was partly inspired by the tone of my voice during our conversation. Why was it so important that you create your own bespoke print fabrics, and what makes them different from anything else on the market? It’s just way more exciting and more fun. Kai has been able to build an incredible community, and I love the idea of having beautiful, distinctive prints to ourselves. I would love for Girls in Kai to spot each other on the street and give each other a knowing nod, as you can’t walk past without the print catching your eye. What are you fascinated by at the moment, and how does it reflect in your work? I am fascinated by the female form. I think it is so beautiful and I want to create clothing that accentuates it in different ways. I am also very intrigued by the ocean and the sun, which I believe you can tell just by looking at prints like Gaia. What is the biggest fashion lesson that you have learned since you started your brand? There are no rules. If rules are forced upon you, break them. What are your aspirations for the future? To continue growing our community of women who do not accept any limitations placed on them by society.

Despite its budding international fame, the Nigerian fashion industry still has ways to walk before “Made in Lagos” commands the same respect as “Made in Paris.” Regardless, what cannot be denied is how designers from Africa are changing the face of fashion and also changing the narrative. Their creations are being adorned at global events and commanding the same attention as their foreign contemporaries. It has been a long journey from the days of simple African fabrics being used just for casual wear. Now they are created indigenously in the most intricate details infused with the richness of our culture. Many African designers have crossed the continent and emerged as players on the global scene. As the bar has been raised by them, the time to celebrate the new kids on the block has come. These are young designers whose talent shows plenty of promise and just need the right tools to master their art and create their own presence in the fashion space. And this right here, is precisely what the ARISE FASHION WEEK 2020 hopes to change with this year’s event, titled THE NEW STARS - 30 UNDER 30. Since its inception, AFW has contributed significantly to the African fashion industry, and this has seen a steady growth of the presence of indigenous fashion designers and models on the global circuit. Whether one is reading a fashion magazine or scrolling down social media pages,

it has become quite the norm to come across images of Nigerian models strutting the international runways not to mention famous international acts dressed in garments made by Nigeria designers. The added twist to this year’s event is the whopping $500,000 prize money to be shared amongst some winners and some very lucky winners! This prize money is to help in establishing the brands even further. They are many talented designers who just need a financial breakthrough to enable them execute their plans and projections better. Everyone knows what the journey from a sketch to a finished product entails. It is tough and when not handled properly, reflects on the execution and final outcome. To kickstart the process, and provide an opportunity of a lifetime for some, out of over 150 applicants, AFW invited key players with a proven track record in fashion and design to lend their trained eye in helping to oversee a selection process which produced 30 promising talents, from which the eventual winners will be picked. The show which promises to be very exciting, will hold a very spectacular location in Lagos with LIVE shows from 9th - 12th December 2020. There will be NO AUDIENCE as it is a virtual show which will be broadcast to worldwide viewership on the new ARISEPLAY streaming service and other ARISE/THISDAY platforms.

SLIT SKIRTS

Sometimes all we want is to add some sexiness to our everyday looks. You can elevate your style and swoon the onlookers with a subtle display of your legs with slit hemlines and incorporate sassiness to your look effortlessly. You can also lower the tempo with a more modest slit that’s not so dramatic. Not only are slits sexy, they are flattering! The trick to wearing a slit is to make sure you are showing off just the amount of leg you want to expose, because the last thing you want is a wardrobe malfunction. Here are tips to know before going on the slit trend.

GO EASY ON THE REST OF THE LOOK

Things can easily get to be “too much” if you try to add a statement top, bulky accessories, elaborate lace-up shoes or any other distracting elements to your outfit. Let the slit take center stage and tone down the rest of your look. A simple top and jewelry that doesn’t distract will work wonders.

GO WITH HEELS

What doesn’t look better than a bit of height. A higher heel will make your legs look longer with the slit. Ankle details also work really well with slits.

WORK APPROPRIATE

Slit skirts are work appropriate when it’s a moderate slit especially on a pencil skirt. Pair it with a very conservative top to balance the sexiness.

Since you won’t thrust your entire leg out of your skirt with when you walk, only a bit of leg will peek out until you sit down, and even then, you can cross your legs. This is the one time when spot-on sleekness counts.
