EDITOR’S LETTER And so what next?

O

ne week after, we are all still reliving the magical moments from Arise Fashion Week and Jazz Festival. For as long as I’ve worked at Style, this has been one of the most exciting events on our calendar. As a matter of fact, Fashion Week has, over the years, become somewhat of a social exercise with celebrities and socialites jockeying for the best seats. No one talks about it, but the showgoer’s purpose has also started to change. People have started to go not to see, but to be seen, eyeing from row to row on who’s front row and who’s EXECUTIVE EDITOR next to them. It’s as much of a people-watching, celeb-spotting event as it is about seeing the clothing in itself. Sometimes it’s easy for the clothing—arguably the whole reason we have Fashion Week—to be overshadowed by the halo of celebrities. I had this conversation with an industry colleague, and she asked, Why then does fashion week work? Why not? I replied. Regardless of all the distractions, it’s a win/win situation, particularly for upcoming brands, as it provides them with a platform to showcase their collections and reach a global audience. It would be unimaginable for an emerging designer to bring that many influential visitors to one place. Where else can you be in a room with the industry’s most influential people who can elevate your career? The top editors are there. The buyers are there. The press is there. Social media is there. It really can’t get better than this. This note right here is for the upcoming designers who do not do enough to take advantage of the perks that come with being part of a global show. You have just been launched on a global stage which will help open new dimensions for your brand, create new contacts and communicate your vision to the world. Don’t just talk a good game without delivering. It’s your time to shine. Do the work and fly with it. See you on the runway this time next year. Love,

Konye

Fresh Talents

HIGHLIGHTS FROM ARISE FASHION WEEK AND JAZZ FESTIVAL 2023

Inclusion and Diversity

This year’s event was particularly special, as it marked the debut of 13 new designers on the Arise Fashion Week runway. The new designers brought a fresh perspective and innovative ideas to the runway. Their collections showcased a wide range of styles and themes, from bold, colourful prints to sleek, minimalist designs. Another exciting aspect of this year’s Arise Fashion Week was the introduction of over 40 new models who were also making their first appearance at the show. These fresh faces brought a new level of energy and excitement to the runway, with many of them receiving great attention from the fashion industry’s top talent scouts.

From Herbie Hancock and FKJ’s electrifying performance to Naomi Campbell and Alpha Dia’s runway presence, there was something for everyone at this year’s event. In this article, we’ll look at some of the show’s highlights.

One of the most notable highlights of this year’s Arise Fashion Week was the increased representation of designers from the northern regions of Nigeria. This year’s event saw a significant increase in the number of designers from the north showcasing their unique styles and designs. This is a significant development, as it showcases the diversity of Nigerian Fashion and the talent that exists outside of the traditional fashion hubs in the south. The increased representation of northern designers at Arise Fashion Week was not just a highlight of the event, but it was also a sign of the growing importance of the fashion industry in Northern Nigeria. The fashion industry in Nigeria is booming, and the North is poised to play a significant role in this growth. With its rich cultural heritage and talented designers, the North is a region to watch in the world of Fashion.
