t’s been a whirlwind of a year, hasn’t it? , Yet, here we are, stepping into 2024, hearts full, hopes high and incredibly thankful to God for guiding us through the maze of the past year. If there’s one lesson that 2023 etched deeply into my soul, it’s the art of flexibility. The year was like a masterclass in expecting the unexpected. Plans made with certainty were often upended, reminding us that life’s only constant is change, whether for better or worse. This understanding has led me to approach 2024 differently – not with rigid resolutions but with mindful intentions. You see, I’ve realised that resolutions often set us up for disappointment. We aim high, sometimes unrealistically so, and then grapple with the pressure of meeting those targets. This year, I want to shift the focus from ‘doing’ to ‘being’. Goals, as we traditionally set them, are fixed points in the future; intentions, however, are more immediate, more present. They’re about embodying the change we wish to see in ourselves, day by day. Consider this perspective: if your resolution is about transformation and growth, isn’t it also an intention? Intentions are ongoing journeys, not checkboxes on a todo list. They’re about fostering an attitude, a way of living that aligns with our deepest values and aspirations. Now, don’t get me wrong. The New Year is undoubtedly a thrilling milestone, a time for reflection and recalibration. It’s a celebration of how far we’ve come, a moment to appreciate the goals we’ve achieved, the friendships we’ve formed, and the lessons we’ve learned. However, it’s also important to remember that you don’t need to wait for a new year to set intentions. The beauty of this approach is that it’s adaptable; you can start when you feel ready, not just when the calendar turns a page. For me, this is a more compassionate and realistic way to begin another year, which might bring its own set of challenges. With no foolproof way to plan for the future, intentions will become my compass, guiding me to find space for compassion and growth, even in times of stillness or uncertainty. What are your plans for this year? Remember, there’s no pressure to have it all figured out. We’ve just emerged from a year that taught us the value of taking things one step at a time. So, whether you choose to set intentions and resolutions or simply just take each day as it comes, know that it’s perfectly okay. Wishing you all a Happy New Year in advance! May 2024 bring you joy, peace, and an abundance of opportunities to grow and thrive. Here’s to a year of living intentionally, embracing each moment with gratitude, and nurturing our well-being. Love,

Konye

HOW TO ROCK A PARTY WHEN YOU’RE NOT THE ONLY FASHION STAR

Chioma Ikokwu Unveils Fashion Collection in Partnership with Notable Brands at RJ4, Lagos. Lawyer, entrepreneur and fashion influencer Chioma Ikokwu recently hosted top celebrities, notable fashion designers and fashion influencers to an exciting celebration of fashion and philanthropy on the 20th of December, 2023, at RJ4, Victoria Island, Lagos. The event was proudly supported by Champagne LaurentPerrier. The event was to launch new fashion collections for her business, Chioma’s Closet. An initiative she launched to empower the less privileged by selling her pre-loved fashion items, with 50% of the proceeds going to her self-funded non-profit, The Good Way Foundation. To achieve this, she collaborated with notable Nigerian fashion brands such as Imad Eduso, Amy Aghomi, Wanni Fuga, Hertunba, Weizdhurm Franklyn, LFJ Official and DNA by Iconic Invanity to give fashion and philanthropy centre stage. During the event, there was also a fireside chat with Latasha Ngwube, who had an insightful conversation with Chioma Ikokwu, Founder/CEO of Chioma’s Closet, about the purpose of establishing Chioma’s Closet and the brand’s values spanning around elegance, luxury, philanthropy, and compassion.

Bold Colors and Playful Prints After the sparkle and shine of the holiday season, the New Year invites a playful yet sophisticated colour palette. Bold hues like cobalt blue, emerald green, and fiery red make a statement, while pastel tones offer a softer, more understated look. Prints are also in vogue, with everything from classic stripes and polka dots to more adventurous animal prints and abstract designs. A brightly patterned blouse or a vibrantly coloured scarf can add personality to your outfit. RENI ABINA KEKERE EKUN

Footwear that Combines Comfort and Style Given that brunch often involves a fair amount of sitting and socialising, comfort is key when it comes to footwear. Stylish flats or sneakers can be great choices, especially when they add a pop of colour or a unique design element to your outfit. A chunky heel or a wedge offers style and comfort for those who prefer heels.

Embrace Comfort with Elegance The start of the year is synonymous with new beginnings and a relaxed mindset. This is beautifully reflected in the trend of combining comfort with elegance. The key is to blend soft, comfortable fabrics with pieces that add a touch of refinement.

NEW YEAR’S DAY BRUNCH FASHION: START THE YEAR IN STYLE. Sustainability in Fashion There’s been a growing emphasis on sustainability in fashion. Choosing vintage pieces or shopping from brands that prioritise ethical and sustainable practices is good for the planet and gives your style a unique and conscientious edge. Whether it’s a vintage leather jacket or a dress from an eco-friendly label, these choices can make your fashion statement even more powerful.

#BEINTENTIONAL

Accessorise Wisely Accessories are the exclamation point of any outfit, and this is particularly true for brunch fashion. A statement necklace or a pair of chandelier earrings can elevate a simple outfit. Stylish hats, like a wide-brimmed fedora, also add to the aesthetic. And let’s not forget the power of a great bag – a structured tote or a trendy crossbody bag can be both functional and fashionable.

AND THE HASHTAG FOR 2024 IS

Men’s Brunch Fashion Men’s fashion for New Year’s Day brunch is all about smartcasual. A well-fitted blazer can be paired with chinos or dark jeans for a relaxed and refined look. Layering is also a great option, with a v-neck sweater over a collared shirt. Accessories like a leather watch or a pocket square can add a touch of class, and footwear like loafers or brogues can tie the whole look together.

As we enter the New Year, there’s no better way to embrace its fresh energy than with a stylish brunch with friends or family. Whether you’re hosting a cosy gathering at home or heading out to a trendy café, your New Year’s Day brunch is the perfect occasion to showcase your fashion sense. From bold colours, experimenting with layers, or making a statement with accessories, remember that the best fashion choice is one that reflects your personal style and makes you feel great. Here’s to starting the year in style!

Layering with Style Layering is a fantastic way to experiment with different textures and styles. A sleek TANIA OMOTAYO turtleneck under a slip dress can create an interesting and stylish ensemble. Don’t be afraid to mix materials – a denim jacket over a silk dress, for instance, can offer an edgy yet sophisticated look.

s the new year rolls around, a familiar ritual begins: the setting of resolutions. We promise ourselves to eat healthier, exercise more, or learn a new skill. Yet, more often than not, these resolutions fade away, leaving us feeling defeated. But what if there’s a more effective approach? Enter the world of intention setting, a method that’s gaining traction for its transformative impact. Unlike resolutions, which are often rigid and specific, intentions are more about the journey than the destination. They focus on the ‘why’ rather than the ‘how’ or ‘what’. It’s about setting a mindset for the year rather than a checklist of achievements. Dr. Samantha Brooks, a psychologist specialising in goal-setting and motivation, explains, “Intention setting is about aligning your actions with your values and inner desires, not just ticking off goals.” Let’s talk about Wale, a 35-year-old software developer. Every year, Wale set a resolution to “get fit,” which typically meant getting a gym membership. By February, the enthusiasm waned; by March, the gym was a distant memory. This year, he tried something different. He set an intention to “embrace a healthier lifestyle.” This shift in perspective led him to explore activities he actually enjoyed, like hiking and cycling. The pressure to ‘achieve’ fitness was replaced by a desire to connect with his love for the outdoors. This example illustrates a key benefit of intention setting: flexibility. Life is unpredictable, and our goals need to adapt to changing circumstances. When you set an intention, you’re committing to a mindset that can encompass a range of actions and adapt as needed. Intention setting also fosters self-compassion. It acknowledges that we’re human and that our paths to our goals might be non-linear. “When you set intentions, you give yourself the grace to make mistakes and learn from them, rather than beating yourself up for not meeting a rigid goal,” says Dr Brooks. Intentions can also be incredibly powerful in bringing about real change. Research in positive psychology suggests that aligning our actions with deeper values and beliefs makes us more likely to feel fulfilled and motivated. This intrinsic motivation is what keeps the fire burning long after the initial excitement of a New Year’s resolution has faded. Another key aspect of intention setting is mindfulness. It’s about being present in the journey and recognising the small steps you take towards your larger intention. For example, if your intention is to “be more present in relationships,” acknowledging the times you actively listen or put away your phone during conversations is part of this process. Intention setting doesn’t mean you can’t have specific goals. Instead, it’s about framing these goals within a Unlike resolutions, broader, more meaningful context. A goal might be to ‘run which are often rigid a marathon,’ but the intention could be ‘to challenge myself and specific, intentions and embrace perseverance.’ are more about the As we embrace this new approach, it’s important to journey than the remember that intention setting is deeply personal. What destination. They focus works for one person might not work for another. The on the ‘why’ rather beauty of this method lies in its flexibility and adaptability to than the ‘how’ or individual needs and circumstances. ‘what’. As you embark on this journey, remember Dr. Brooks’ words: “Setting intentions is not a one-time act but a continuous process of aligning your daily actions with your deepest values.” Here’s to a year of meaningful, sustainable, and fulfilling intentions!

YEAR IN REVIEW:

CELEBRATING THE BEST

NIGERIAN MOVIES OF 2023 Undoubtedly, Nollywood showcased creative brilliance, delivering compelling stories and impressive performances and pushing storytelling boundaries in 2023. We saw some of the best movies to come out of the industry yet with a mix of both fresh and old faces. In this article, we’re highlighting some of our favourite Nigerian movies this year. By Bukola Amoboye 1. The Black Book: This goes without saying: Editi Effiong’s ‘The Black Book’ was a global hit, topping Netflix’s charts across over 15 countries worldwide! From story to cinematography to acting, locations, etc, Editi showed us what’s possible if we could dare to dream. Starring Richard Mofe-Damijo, Shaffy Bello, Sam Dede, Ade Laoye, Kelechi Udegbe, and many more, The Black Book gave us the thrill of a lifetime from beginning to end! 2. Gangs of Lagos: After ‘Brotherhood’, Jade Osiberu literally said ‘Hold my beer’ as she wasn’t done. She dropped another action thriller that absolutely blew everyone away. Since its release in April, we have been unable to stop talking and referring to it. Jade’s ‘Gangs of Lagos’ has had us in a chokehold for months! Tobi Bakre is seemingly the frontman for Nigerian action thrillers this period, and we’re here for it. We also saw outstanding performances from Olarotimi Fakunle, Tayo Faniran, Choke, Adesua Etomi, and more. This movie set a new standard for Nollywood thrillers.

YEAR IN REVIEW:

ANTHEMS OF 2023 As we slowly close the curtain on the year 2023, we look back and see it’s been a truly remarkable year for Nigerian music. Let’s take a quick dive into 12 songs that quickly became anthems this year. By Bukola Amoboye

3. Shanty Town: This six-part series was one of the first to be released this year, and what an opening it was for 2023. It certainly set a pedestal and hit the ball running for the other movies that followed. It saw the return of legendary Nollywood actor Chidi Mokeme, who came to show us he was and always will be one of the finest actors we’ve ever seen. From story to acting to stunts, fight choreo, SFX, etc, there was lots of love about this movie. It kept everyone talking for months! 4. Jagun Jagun: Femi Adebayo outdid himself in this epic thriller. From story to acting, suspense, costumes, and language, Jagun Jagun was that movie! Starring the likes of Adedimeji Lateef, Bimbo Ademoye, Faithia Balogun, Bukunmi Oluwashina, and Femi Adebayo himself, amongst others, the movie set a new standard for war epics and indigenous language films in Nigeria. 5. House of Secrets: This movie won us over with exceptional storytelling and mind-blowing cinematography; Niyi Akinmolayan really went all out for this one, and it’s no surprise it made it to our list! 6. A Tribe Called Judah: the ‘Queen of box office’, Funke Akindele released another banger this month that has left everyone in awe. She really never misses. From story to acting, there’s so much. A tribe called Judah is a compelling drama that would have you fixed on your seat from beginning to end. 7. Breath of Life: This is one movie everyone has been unable to stop talking about since its release about a week ago. Every frame, dialogue, scene, etc, is done with intentionality. It’s a grappling movie that guarantees a few tears here and there. Grab your tissues if you haven’t seen it yet. It is definitely worth it.

MOHBAD

1. The musical maestro Burna Boy solidified his reign over the charts with “City Boys,’’. This track is a testament to his unwavering presence in the industry and a clear signal that he’s here to stay, continuing to shape the sound of Afrobeats.

7. Spyro, with “Only Fine Girl” in October, proved that he’s the man of the hour. He’s crafted back-to-back hits with fans eagerly waiting for more, holding them spellbound with his catchy tunes. From Who’s Your Guy to Only Fine Girl, Spyro has fans on lockdown.

2. In February, BNXN teamed up with Kizz Daniel and Seyi Vibes to release “Gwagwalada,” a tune so infectious that it’s still on everyone’s lips ten months later. This song is not just a hit; it’s a cultural phenomenon we’re confident will spill over into 2024.

8. Davido’s “Unavailable,” which hit the airwaves in May, became an instant global sensation, especially when Chris Brown was spotted grooving to its viral dance. Even if you’re not a dancer, there’s no way you haven’t hummed along to this worldwide hit.

3. June brought us “Lonely at the Top” by Asake, a song that quickly morphed from a hit to a national chant, becoming a familiar tune across all ages in Nigeria.

9. Tems, the extraordinary singer-songwriter, graced us with “Me & U” in October. Her unique sound and lyrical prowess turned the song into an instant hit, adding another chart-topper to her repertoire.

4. Kcee introduced us to “Ojapiano”, also in June, a trailblazer that’s been the heartbeat of parties, clubs, and celebrations nationwide. It’s more than a song—it’s the herald of the Amapiano movement, a fresh genre that’s taking the music scene by storm. 5. Asake, in collaboration with Olamide, struck gold twice with “Amapiano,” released in May. The duo’s alchemy has kept this anthem at the forefront since its debut, captivating the audience with its pulsating beats. 6. Kizz Daniel, the hit machine, kept his winning streak alive with “My G” in July. Following the success of “Buga” and “Cough,” this track is another feather in his cap, proving that his musical journey is far from over.

10. Mohbad’s “Ask About Me,” released in April, holds a poignant place in the hearts of fans. As one of his final gifts before his tragic passing, the song’s popularity soared posthumously, becoming a touching tribute to his talent. 11. July saw Crayon and Ayra Starr collaborate on “Ngozi,” a banger that showcases the genius of Don Jazzy’s protégés. It’s a vibrant and electrifying track that has everyone hitting the repeat button. 12. Lastly, “Terminator” by King Promise, featuring Young John and released in August, remains one of the year’s most adored hits. It’s a song that has continued to resonate with us, a fitting endnote to this musical journey.

The fate of these innovative companies raised concerns about the broader ecosystem of young startups looking to secure funding in the years to come.
