TOM MCLEAN ART WORK IN PROGRESS Through his many roles and titles of visual artist, producer, director and curator, the figurative painter and portrait artist, Tom McLean’s love for his craft has resulted in him carving out his own place in the evolving Galway art scene. Putting a moment’s pause on his day-to-day life, Tom brings us up to speed on his journey as an artist. From visiting his exhibited work in the National Gallery of Ireland to studying under the tutelage of established artists at the Royal Hibernian Academy, it’s been a wild and rewarding ride for Tom to get to where he is today. Back in Galway, he worked in the 126 Artist-Run Gallery, first as a studio artist in 2017 before joining the Board there and taking on more curatorial responsibilities. Arriving on an incredibly satisfying full circle moment, Tom is currently preparing for an exhibition in the 126 Artist-Run Gallery in autumn 2024. “I’m really excited to make a body of work, and the plan is to make something a bit different to what people normally expect from my work so maybe a bit more installation and multidisciplinary work. Something that’s a bit more fun because I think that is the idea of the 126 as well, because it is a funded, non-commercial space, it’s very open to ideas and experiments,” says Tom. Crediting his time with the 126 for teaching him the ins and outs of running a gallery, Tom realised he had a lot of love for collaborating with multiple artists to show their work in one shared space. Upon speaking with Luke Reidy and Evan O’Connor, the trio soon realised they all shared the aim of making a contribution to the Galway art scene, and so Outset Gallery was created. Today, it acts as a cultural hub that provides a platform for both emerging and established artists.

The reason I got into art, and the reason I became an artist is because I love narratives, I love stories and I love people.

In the weeks ahead, Outset Gallery will open its doors to welcome in its 2nd annual open call to artists across Ireland. From December 1st to 23rd, 75+ artists will have their work displayed at Outset in a celebration of the Arts. At Outset, Tom’s role as curator allows him to help show the narratives other artists tell through their work in a shared space. Speaking about his work, Tom says; “I just loved the idea of producing something with artists and seeing other people enjoy it. I think that is a really special thing to be able to do. That’s the biggest payment to see other people engaging with something that you have helped either produce, facilitate or curate.” “The reason I got into art, and the reason I became an artist is because I love narratives, I love stories and I love interacting with different people. I think that has always been the most consistent theme of my life. I’m a portrait artist and figurative painter, the paintings I make are about my own life, other people’s lives, about stories I’ve read, always trying to explore the lived experience.”

Thanks to his experience with the different stages of being an artist, Tom finds himself in a unique position of being able to see all sides of the art scene. Noting that; “There is this energy that has been building up since Covid finished across the whole sector.” Adding that; “There’s a really cool DIY scene at the minute with the likes of Ar Ais Arís, Yawlag, The Black Gate, Ethereal Magazine, The Oil Slick, Free House.. all these people are doing what they want to do because they want to see something happening in Galway. If there wasn’t something happening before it was because there wasn’t the facilities, space or energy and now people have decided that no we are going to change this.” Aligning himself to this new wave of artistic renaissance, Tom describes a strong feeling of camaraderie across the whole arts sector; “I feel like there is an undeniable sense of community here, where we are all trying to support one another because we are all trying to move towards the same goal in different ways.“ To stay update on all of Tom’s latest projects and new work, you can follow him on Instagram @tommclean_art

As we move into the winter months, what better way to keep yourself entertained than with our mini-bucket list of where to go in Galway this November/December…

eat your greens Plant based goodness is the speciality of Greens & Co. Delicious vegan, vegetarian and gluten free dishes make up their menus and their daily specials. We are certain that you’ll leave here with a broadened palate and an appreciation for all things vegetarian. They are also dog friendly, so remember to bring along your pup as this team would absolutely love to meet them, btw their pancakes are absolutely to die for!

visit a winter woodland Located 8km North of Athenry off the L54, Monivea Woods is a stunning natural woodland that was once part of the Ffrench estate. Consisting of two waymarked trails, the mass track trail (1.3km) and the historic trail (1.5km) will lead you around the woods. One of its main features is the Ffrench family mausoleum which is as impressive today as it was when it was constructed in 1900.

enjoy the finer things in life Winner of last year’s Georgina Campbell’s Restaurant of the Year Award, Lignum offers a certified fine dining experience that is second to none. Under the guidance of owner and Head Chef Danny Africano, the ethos behind Lignum is to bring back the ancient way of cooking over fire to a modern age while showcasing the quality and diversity of ingredients from the wonderful people who raise, grow and produce them.

embrace the arts An artist-led organisation that is integral to Galway’s visual arts scene 126 Artist-Run Gallery is a supporter to all emerging visual artists. Run voluntarily, their exhibits are always free to visit and alternate frequently in order to best provide a platform for all. These exhibitions vary from photography, painting, sculpture etc. and showcase the works of artists of all levels, from local art students to internationally established artists.

catch a trad music session The family-owned traditional Irish bar Tig Chóilí runs on a love for trad music. The space is full of snugs and stools, so there’s plenty of room to get cosy in time for their twice daily live trad sessions. This spot also makes a delicious Irish coffee which is perfect for those colder nights and regardless of the time of day there is always plenty of conversation and craic to be had. galway food stories PAULA PASTRY: FROM THURLES TO THE GREAT ANCIENT MESOAMERICANS

Paula Pastry has a huge cult status in the chocolate world. I’ve watched her career fold out and it’s been hotter than 18 holes with Shane Lowry! It’s magnificent to see this skill and it has totally been backed up and enormously encouraged by The Red Carnation Group. Her amazing afternoon tea range in Mrs Tea’s at Ashford Castle is the ultimate Sunday treat, and as a great woman she always lifts other great women up. In addition to getting Paula’s chocolates online, she also recommends the blooming great Bon Chocolatiers based in Athlone and gluten free Monaghan legend that is Tara Gartlen for ya Xmas boogie choccy gifts and remember kids always buy two! J. You’ve got some products here. The Valrhona hot chocolate, that’s completely vegan? P. It’s Nyambo, it’s a pure origin from Ghana, it’s 68% cocoa. It’s not bitter like you would expect it to be, it’s quite balanced. You can make it with normal milk, with almond milk it’s even nicer. You wouldn’t even know it’s plant-based. Pure chocolate, nothing else, no sugar, no additives, just chocolate. J. If people want to buy these chocolates, do they have to go to Mrs. Tea’s? P. You can buy them online or in-store at Mrs. Tea’s. We are launching the Christmas range soon. We have two blends that we made with Valrhona that are bespoke to us Legend, which is 55% milk. All the beans are from Africa, and we use that in the base of most of our chocolates. Then our newest one is Legacy. We’ve taken our Legend chocolate and added a creamy hazelnut to it. J. Would Valrhona be considered Fair Trade? P. Yeah. They’re B Corp, which means they’ve gone through the whole certification of everything is sustainable, everything is ethical. Last year they made a chocolate called Komuntu and a percentage of the profit goes straight back to the farmers. That’s really important to us and why we work with them. When we made Legend, we wanted to make sure that the profits were going to Ghana and to the people of Africa. So by us buying ethical chocolate, everybody’s benefiting. J. Tell me about launching in Brown Thomas at Christmas. P. We’re launching on the 1st of November; a chocolate range, the Ashford Castle range, shards of chocolate, and also the full pastry, legacy chocolates. And, we have a chocolate gingerbread man, his name is going to be Rory. I’ve been trying to do this for a few years so I feel very lucky that it’s happening this year.

If a night dedicated to Harry Styles and One Direction (with Harraoke, lip-sync battles and Stylish fashion contests) sounds like the best night ever, head to Róisín Dubh on Nov 9th or Belfast’s Empire Music Hall on Nov 29th. Niall says; “I really feel like a proud parent to see WOMP grow from hosting virtual quizzes in the very first lockdown to now running soldout themed quizzes, comedy gigs and club nights in venues and festivals across the country.” What’s Next For WOMP? This winter you can get quizzical at the popular COMMON KNOWLEDGE Quiz in The Ol’ 55. These nights are quizzential craic and can include anything from photo rounds and riddle rounds to useless trivia and sing-along song games. Good news: the second annual PURE GALWAY Quiz returns to Massimo on Dec 12th. Hire WOMP This Winter. This festive season, you can use all of WOMP’s experience to take care of your staff/birthday/funeral/wedding/divorce parties. XIN GIN Awaken Your Senses

Xin Gin from Ahascragh Distillery is a multiaward-winning gin featuring a blend of carefully balanced European and Oriental botanicals. Masterfully crafted in the heart of Galway, Xin Gin is an exceptional spirit from Ireland’s first eco-distillery, which is powered exclusively by renewable energy. Xin Gin is an expression of what Ahascragh Distillery Founders, Michelle and Gareth McAllister love most about the two places they have called home - Asia and Ireland. The word ‘Xin’ (pronounced ‘shin’) means ‘heart’ or ‘feelings’ in Mandarin and the bottle design features Celtic and Asian influences. A juniper-led dry gin, Xin Gin boasts fresh citrus notes of orange zest and lemongrass combined with the exotic taste of the Asian fruit, persimmon, held by an earthy, herbaceous undertone of dill and cinnamon spice. Xin Gin pays homage to tradition while embracing the spirit of innovation and is already making waves in the industry. Xin Gin was named ‘Best in Ireland’ at The Gin Guide Awards 2022 and 2023 and took home gold in the Irish Quality Food and Drink Awards 2023. Whether savoured neat, mixed in a contemporary cocktail or enjoyed in a classic G&T, Xin Gin lends itself beautifully to every mix and occasion.

Fuchsia MacAree’s Prints, Perspective, and Projects Irish illustrator Fuchsia MacAree has the unique ability of capturing observations of the world around her, showcasing her findings in warm, inviting, and delightful prints. With an emphasis on ordinary life and the beauty that exists within those shared moments, Fuchsia’s illustrations nurture a feeling of infectious joy. We’re absolutely thrilled to chat with Fuchsia about her work, inspiration and some very exciting projects on the horizon. “I sort of have a design head on me if that makes sense,” says Fuchsia. “I like simplifying things. I’m really into communicating with the viewer, and making things clear and visually clean.” Beautifully bold lines fill the space in Fuchsia’s prints and designs. Whimsical characters meander through a colourful world - a world often ripe with references to Irish culture. “I really like people watching and noticing a little moment between two people. Like a little tender moment or a weird and embarrassing thing. That’s something I’m quite drawn to.” This sense of humanity and warmth is a hallmark of Fuchsia’s designs. While she strips away some aspects in the background, what remains is the recognisable and relatable moments of personhood. “I’m sort of trying to elevate everyday things up a little bit.”

Page 23 | FUCHSIA MACAREE

One of her designs, captioned ‘Crisps for Dinner’, pieces together a familiar scene in her own distinct style. Two pints of stout, a hot whiskey, and a big ol’ packet of crisps for sharing. Warmth and candle light sweep over the image with a phone timestamp of 8:40pm. A recognisable moment between friends, captured perfectly by Fuchsia. “I would be interested in something that’s more realism based…Taking things from everyday life, and bottling those little bits.”

By ‘bottling up these bits’ and transforming them into a physical piece of art, there is a direct sense of storytelling; what Fuchsia calls ‘visual storytelling.’ Fuchsia’s interpretation of the world around us is saturated in joyful memorable moments. “I’m trying to capture the essence of everyday life, by focusing on fleeting moments of joy, contentment, or peace. By isolating those moments, I hope to draw the viewer into the scene.”

Page 24 | FUCHSIA MACAREE

I’m trying to capture the essence of everyday life, by focusing on fleeting moments of joy, contentment, or peace. Currently, Fuchsia is in the process of creating an exhibition for Plámás, in Galway’s very own Westend. “The most exciting thing for me at the moment is this exhibition with Plámás…That will be lovely because I’m going to try and show things related to the West Coast, in Clare and Galway, and the physical ties of those two places. Hopefully I can spend a little bit of time making things for that. That is kinda the place I’m happiest, making things.” Fuchsia’s ability to see the ‘everyday’ through a lens of earnest admiration and creative flair is what makes her designs incredibly distinct in style, yet familiar in feeling. You will definitely recognise Fuchsia’s work from our magazine. In our ‘Out of City’ section, her wayfinding maps are always inviting and culturally rich, as well as easily navigational. “You could look at a quite technical map, but you wouldn’t get the same emotional or cultural value from that.” She truly makes mapping fun again! To see more of Fuchsia’s work you can visit her instagram @fuchsiamacaree or her website macaree.ie

howya? Howya! Any craic? Yes loads but if I told you I’d have to kill you. Tell us about yourself... My name is Kieran O’Malley and I work in the Connacht Hospitality Group where I work in PR & Social Media. What do you love about your job? I love the variety, with eleven different businesses in the group no two days are the same, plus to be fair I work with a great team, it’s a busy and demanding job but we have good craic doing it. What brought you to Galway? I came to Galway originally for college and I’ve pretty much been here since. When are you happiest? On the football pitch, standing in goal, no phone just in the moment, I feel blessed to still be able to play a lot. What’s your favourite thing to do in Galway? We are blessed with an incredible food scene in Galway, so definitely eating out. Tell us one thing you would change about Galway? I’d love to see an indoor venue for three to five thousand people of bigger music and comedy gigs. Tell us a secret… Mayo are going to win the All Ireland next year. Tell us a joke! The rotation of Earth really makes my day.

Cat Turner and the secrets she sings

Page 40 | CAT TURNER

Cat Turner is well known for her presence in Galway’s music scene. Her songs are self-described as angsty, alternative, and ripe with electro-pop influences. Cat writes and produces her music, giving her the unique ability to shape the sounds she wants to create. In every chord, there’s a synchronous push and pull towards the desire and longing that ultimately makes us human. With self-reflective undertones and a conviction to create, Cat Turner’s music coaxes us to believe that truth really does exist within poetry. We spoke with Cat about her process, inspiration, and upcoming projects. “I’ve been living in Galway for about 6 years now…I very much moved over here to play music.” In those 6 years Cat has performed across a number of stages and club nights, like A Modern Movement and Black Gate Introducing. She has also written and produced an impressive catalogue of music. Displaying vulnerability, her lyrics tell intimate and personal stories that are easier sung than said. As she puts it, “I want this to be super honest. I just need to let it work and ignore the fact anyone is ever going to hear this… These are things that I would never tell anyone, but I’ll sing it to you.” In songs like ‘Sticking with Ya’ and ‘Quit It’, she unveils the deep and concealed aspects of personhood in a rhythmic and electric dreamlike style. ‘How do I know me like I know you? Am I safe in apathy though?’ a line from ‘Quit It’, begs a question of selfinterpretation and the complacency of love we often find ourselves in. These musings float over an ethereal track that is saturated with electric ambiance. For Cat, songwriting and production is the outlet of all outlets, proving that the things that cause ache and pain can sometimes be morphed into something truly healing. “Because I can make music, there’s nothing that’s just a shitty thing, because I can make a song out of it…. at least I wrote that poem, at least I’m singing this on stage. It adds a little bit more meaning to it.”

This catharsis is integral to her process. “I feel most myself. If I’ve had a shit week and I just spend a day rehearsing in the house or writing a song, I’m the most proud of myself, I feel the most empowered and strong.” “I think when I don’t have that, I don’t feel complete, there’s something there that I’ve been neglecting in myself when I’m not writing music.” Currently Cat is working on her most recent project, ‘Rupture & Repair.’ With around 7 or 8 new tracks coming out, this could be a chance to see a more peeled back sound from Cat. While experimenting with different elements, what remains the same is her honesty, and willingness to share these critical moments with listeners. “It’s kind of two halves of the rupture side, and then the repair side so I’m dying to get it out because I love it.” In fleshing out her sound, she creates a space for change and experimentation in her music. “Some of the stuff I’m writing right now is…leaning into more acoustic elements. I’m trying to add more natural guitar sounds and different things like that. It’s a bit more soppy, sad stuff I guess because I’ve made so much upbeat stuff I can make room for that.”
