mirth, mischief andcuratedcarefullycraic
Tommy Tiernan, fresh from his roles on Derry Girls and Conversations With Friends, returns to the arena in which he is king - stand-up comedy - for two nights at Galway Comedy Festival.
Tommy brings his show Tomfoolery to Leisureland, Salthill, on October 26 and 27, exploring ideas on God, sex, and family that will be equal parts sacred and profane, but always thoroughly hilarious. Tommy is one of the most original of his, or indeed, any other generation, of Irish comedians. He was accused of blasphemy in Seanad Éireann, voted Ireland’s funniest living person, and has been hailed by Billy Connolly as one of his favourite comedians in the world.
Words by Kernan Andrews Photographs courtesy Galway Comedy Festival Galway Comedy Festival returns from Tues 25 to Mon 31 OctoberArguably one of the key events in the city’s cultural calendar, the comedy festival will see Galway become a place of mirth, mischief, and “carefully curated craic” between Tuesday 25 and Monday 31 October. Alongside Tommy, there will be shows from Dylan Moran, Daniel Sloss, Jimeoin, Deirdre O’Kane, Kevin McAleer, Rich Hall, Reginald D Hunter, Ardal O’Hanlon, Bobby Davro, Rory’s Stories, Gary Delaney, Andrew Maxwell, Colin Murphy, Emma Doran and plenty more.
Dylan and Daniel
GCF 2022 opens with the great Dylan Moran (Black Books, Shaun Of The Dead) and new show, We Got This, in Leisureland. The BAFTA and Perrier award winning comic will ponder why it is easier to spend ten minutes staring at a banana than doing something really important, along with other frustrations and follies of everyday living.
Channel 4 ranked Moran the 14th-greatest comedy stand-up, but French newspaper Le Monde declared him “the greatest comedian, living or dead”. Galway will have three chances to see why, with shows on Tuesday October 25, Friday 28, and Saturday 29.
Daniel Sloss (Leisureland, Sunday October 30) is possibly the most
exciting of a new generation of British comedians. Proof of the Scot’s brilliance was his becoming the biggest ticket selling comedian in the world for most of 2021 - an extraordinary feat considering the pandemic was still raging - selling out six New York solo off-Broadway seasons, breaking box office records in Edinburgh, and touring 53 countries. As The Times said, this “former teen prodigy is starting to match his mastery of the comic moment with a real sense of daring and ambition”.
Sloss’s Netflix specials, DARK and Jigsaw, are streaming in 190 countries in 26 languages. Indeed, Jigsaw has been credited with breaking up more than 120,000 couples and cited in more than 300 divorces world-wide, with some fans even bringing their divorce papers for him to autograph at shows!
Who’s at the Town Hall?
The Town Hall Theatre will host an array of shows throughout the festival, starting with a legend of British comedy, Bobby Davro, on Wednesday 26. While many will remember him as Eastenders’ Vinnie Monks, Davro truly shines on the comedy stage - a one man joke machine, a singer, and as Chortle.co.uk said, “a talented mimic” who delivers “brilliant impersonations”. In a career of more than 40 years, Davro has amassed a list of credits as long as your arm – if you have a really long arm.
A true Irish favourite is up next, with Rory O’Connor and his Rory’s Stories on Thursday 27. From struggles at school, to a serious gambling addiction, he overcame the odds. His Galway show will feature reflections on life as a GAA fan, inspirational talks, much laughter, and maybe a song or two.
Jimeoin, the Irish comedian who has left audiences in stitches across the UK, Europe, and USA, will bring The Craic! on Saturday 29. His cheeky, no-gimmicks, superbly observed sense of humour has led to appearances on Live at the Apollo, Conan, and Sunday Night at the Palladium. The Manchester Evening News said of one of his shows, Jimeoin “didn’t leave a dry eye in the house”. We suspect it will be the same in Galway.
The Famous Five No Galway Comedy Festival would be complete without shows at Róisín Dubh, the home of Galway comedy. Acts to watch out for at the ‘Bulmer’s Light Presents…’ shows, include Canada’s Glenn Wool, who The Guardian said has “an affability that other comics can only dream of”. See him on Wednesday 26 in a show also being recorded for television. Gary Delaney delivers “more quality jokes in one hour than most comics have in their entire careers” (The Scotsman) and this Mock The Week regular will treat audiences to his brilliant puns and gags on Thursday 27.
There’s a point beyond burnout where all you can do is laugh, and funny woman Deirdre O’Kane has well and truly reached it. Deirdre, who fronted the critically acclaimed RTÉ Does Comic Relief, raising more than €6 million to help those most in need as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, performs her new show Demented on Friday 28.
From Nighthawks in the 1990s to Derry Girls today, Kevin McAleer’s eccentric, surreal, comedic storytelling has earned him a deserved reputation as an Irish comedy legend, and on Saturday 29 he will ask Róisín audiences, Why Am I Here. Rich Hall, the grouchy singing cowboy from Montana, is a true comedy festival favourite. His plain spoken indignation and acerbic observations have an unerring talent for hitting his targets with precision every time, and Galway will see why, once again, on Sunday 30.
With more than 60 shows across seven days, this is but a taste of what the Galway Comedy Festival has to offer. With 18,000 tickets on sale, and events involving comedy, burlesque and cabaret, drag music, mixed bill shows; international stars; emerging talent; Comedy Club Crawls; Open Top Bus Tours; and even a WOMP Events comedy-themed quiz, there is every reason to have a good laugh. After two years of a pandemic, lockdowns, and restrictions, the festival and Galway are back in full swing. Get out there and treat yourself. We all deserve it.
PLÁMÁSPLÁMÁS
a little coffee shop le grá mór for galway
Words by Gráinne Thornton Photos by Ciarán MacChoncarraigeCheerful voices and upbeat tunes tumble out of the half-door at 6 Dominick Street Upper, the bustling café space is filled with laughter and happy conversations. Born out of a love of Galway and its community, Plámás’ first year has seen them transform into recognisable coffee enthusiasts and advocates for the Irish-language.
When this coffee and retail shop first opened their door in 2021, they were welcomed into Galway city’s coffee culture with open arms. Home to a little taste of all that makes Galway so special, everything from the yummy bakes and the house coffee that is roasted in Tuam, to the tote bags, beanies and gifts, has been supplied by Galway producers where possible. Decorating the café walls, Plámás has dedicated a space to display the stunning works by local photographers which is always worth keeping an eye on as you never know what snapshots of Galway city and county might be found here.
Driven by a dedication to their roots, Plámás set out to make a difference in sharing their love for the Irish language. They did this through engaging with their followers on social media and by offering each of their customers a 10c discount when ordering as Gaeilge. To help their non-Irish customers and those who might be a little rusty on pronunciation they added a little guide to their wall which thoughtfully explains how to say “Can I have a coffee please”. Everyone has the chance to save some money and practise their Irish - it’s a win-win!
Everyone has the chance to save some money and practise their Irish - it’s a win-win!
For Ciarán MacChoncarraige, manager of Plámás, the motivation was simple; “Gaeilge has always been a normal part of my own life - I did my entire education through the language - and I was always surprised while growing up to learn about how uncommon it is for people to be confident speaking it. As the proverb goes, “Is beatha teanga í a labhairt’ (the life of a language is in the speaking), the more it’s spoken day-to-day, the more confident people become, and the more likely we are to see other initiatives like this pop up. All in service of the preservation of the Irish language. Gaeilge isn’t dead, far from it!”
Having been awarded the acclaimed Gradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh in the ‘Tourism & Hospitality’ Category, the team’s hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed. “It’s been amazing to see an increased use of Gaeilge in the café,’’ Ciarán continued; “Being recognised by the community as doing a good job for the language meant a great deal to all of us. It showed us that we were on the right path, like a bonus reward after all of the rewarding work.”
The café’s name Plámás, means to flatter as Gaeilge. It’s a word which captures the craic, mischief, sense of divilment and community spirit of Galway, making it the perfect name for this little café which puts people at the heart of everything they do. With so much in store for this little coffee shop in the year ahead we promise we’re not plámásing you when we tell you they really do want you to be a part of it.

Any craic?
I stumbled across a very large rusty iron nose (so big, in fact, you could park a car in its nostril!) when I was out feeding the birds the last day.
Tell us about yourself...
My name is Ms Marjorie Morrigan. I am the Head Professor of Giants & Where They Come From at the University Of Imagination in Galway.
Why do you do what you do?
I love teaching all about Giants. I think people think, because they are so big, that Giants are confident but many of those I have met are very shy.
What have you been up to recently?
I am working with my friends in Macnas who suspect they have an ancient Giant living underneath their workshop in Galway. He is a big fella, if the nose is anything to go by... Macnas are hoping they can pull him out of the ground at some point later this year... And they need my help!
Tell us a secret...
Giants love birds, especially small ones like robins and swallows. The birds mistake Giants for trees such as sycamore, oak or ash, as Giants are so big. The birds tickle the Giants with their feathers.
Who’s your hero?
I love the go of Brigid! I worked with her once, spreading a giant cloak across the entire county of Kildare, if you credit that. She’s a hoot and is very sound, her being a goddess and all that... No fuss. Pure lovely.
What’s your happiest memory?
It was winter and the glooms were on me, and one day a bird flew into my window, perched on my hand, and sang me a song. It made me giddy.
What’s your favourite thing to do in Galway?
I love to perch myself on a bench on The Prom, with a bag of chips, watching all the people out and about.
Tell us one thing you would change about Galway? Less traffic, more nature.
Tell us a joke!
Why do bees have sticky hair? They use honey combs.

the dark side of galway’s history
Words by Gráinne Thornton Photo by Boyd ChallengerAs we enter the runup to spooky season, do you dare to take a look at some of Galway’s more haunted destinations? From haunted houses to terrible tragedies, there’s no doubt that Galway has seen its fair share of horrible happenings. If you’re in the mood for a good scare, join us in taking a glimpse into a few horrifyingly good stories about Galway’s past.
The site of slaughter, sympathy and the sound of silence for over 520 years, Forthill Cemetery remains a resting place for many… including those slayed in the greatest act of mass murder in Galway! Over 300 members of the Spanish Armada were beheaded in the place where this burial ground now sits. After such horrific violence, the kind hearted people of Galway took it amongst themselves to lay their bodies to rest.
Forthill WoodlawnCemeteryHouse
Once the epitome of grandeur, Woodlawn House now lies barren, a shadow of its former glory. Rumoured to be haunted, the cruelty inflicted upon the Trench family’s tenants is undoubtedly the source of the downfall of the country house at Woodlawn. The bitter and ill will that had been directed toward the family turned toward the great mansion causing it to be neglected and left to weather out the harsh elements.
Battle of Aughrim
The story of the Battle of Aughrim is of the bloodiest battle fought on Irish soil. When the Jacobites and Williamites clashed at Aughrim, the thunder of canonfire echoed across the land for miles and came to a tragic end. As legend would have it, the piercing screams of soldiers echoed through the darkness. In the battle’s aftermath the grass dripped blood and was scattered with bodies that had been abandoned and left to rot.
Lynch Memorial Window
An ominous skull and crossbones lies near the spot rumoured to be the location where the terrible hanging took place. James Lynch FitzStephen - the elected mayor of Galway AD1493 - condemned and executed his own son Walter after he confessed to the murder of a Spanish merchant sailor by the name of Gomez, who had taken fancy to his girlfriend. Plagued with guilt over what he had done, James Lynch FitzStephen retired into seclusion.
Irish Workhouse Centre
Perfectly preserved, the chilling Irish Workhouse Centre in Portumna is home to the memories of those who suffered horrors within its walls. The haunting structure is an eerie reminder of the awful conditions its inhabitants were subjected to; overcrowding, hard labour, disease and even death. The fear and stigma attached to such a terrible period in Irish History resulted in the abandonment of the building and it sat for decades covered in weeds.
