SIOBHÁNMC Best known for embodying the character of Sister Michael in all her unholiness, Siobhán McSweeney’s epic delivery of those well-timed one-liners and perfected irreverence have aided Derry Girls in becoming one of the most watched, universally loved sitcoms of our time. On one particularly blustery day in February, myself and Siobhán McSweeney sat down on opposite sides of the Irish Sea for a candid conversation punctuated with laughter, moments of great insight and inklings of what it means to be a Derry Girl ahead of her Galway 2020 Wild Atlantic Women event alongside Susan McKay on March 7. For those amongst us who aren’t familiar with the show (all three of you!), Derry Girls is a sitcom created by the impressive mind of Lisa McGee, set during The Troubles in Northern Ireland circa 1990. Female led and incredibly outlandish, the show lends a lightheartedness to a time tainted with political turmoil not too long ago, all while remaining hilarious. It’s the ordinary moments of friendship and shared experiences that make the programme what it is and the third season is in the pipeline, so you’ve got plenty of time to get yourself acquainted with all the Derry Girls. Taking things back to the tender age of ten, something clicked within Siobhán while reciting poems at Speech and Drama down in her homeland of Cork. “We would learn off poems by rote and there was one that for some reason suddenly clicked with me. I wasn’t just saying words, I was telling a story... It felt like a secret, like I’d found some secret code in the language. That is a really palpable, tangible moment where I knew I wanted to do this.” Before taking on the formidable stance of Sister Michael - the patron saint of eye rolls and acerbic wit - Siobhán cut her acting teeth on stage, and so began her love affair with performing. “Like any relationship, you fall in love with someone because of one thing and as the relationship grows you fall in love with them even more because of something else. When I first started acting, in theatre, it was the camaraderie that I loved. The idea of the team effort, the instant family you have by doing a production. I loved the excitement of doing the show.” Throughout her stage and small screen career thus far, Siobhán has honed her very own definition of what an actress is; “a blaggard, a rascal, a chancer - somebody who’s astounded that she’s still getting away with it!”. Having spent a large portion of her life feeling that the glamorous world of acting lay just beyond her reach, Siobhán has found herself at the very crux of it. With Derry Girls quickly taking on the same amount of acclaim as the likes of Fr Ted and becoming immortalised through murals - people all around the world are getting a glimpse into life as a ‘90s Northern lass.

“It’s a testament to the power of not only good television, but of all good art and Lisa has written good art. People are responding to it and unfolding themselves into it and putting themselves within the narrative. I think that’s for a myriad of reasons, not least of which being the fact that the trauma of the north has never been dealt with. It’s never been expressed in a manner that felt properly recognisable. There’s so much healing in comedy. When you laugh, it’s physiologically and mentally curative. I feel very honoured to be part of it.” For someone so vivacious, so filled with mirth and divilment, Siobhán McSweeney has already experienced more than her fair share of grief. While studying Drama in London, her mother sadly passed away followed by her “lovely, difficult, infuriating, witty” father about fifteen years later. With an acting career that began beneath a veil of sadness, Siobhán has maintained her levity and humour, finding solace in the curative powers of comedy. “I think when you’ve experienced grief and loss, what happens more often than not is that people get up, they make tea, they listen to music, they try to laugh, they try to dance again. They grasp life as much as they can and to find things funny again - you don’t belittle something by finding it funny. It doesn’t make it any less important.” “Humour is incredibly powerful and even when we look at great comic performances and great comedians, the cliché is that you usually have the grief underneath it all and I think what you have is pure humanity. Tragedy is an artificial, inhumane construct. Comedy is really human, intellectual and very difficult. Humour is how you express your humanity.” The passing of Siobhán’s father came during filming for season two of Derry Girls and the restorative kindness of her co-stars was beautifully expressed through the words of her Actor’s Diary, which she penned for the recent Winter Papers anthology.

After making the five hour pilgrimage from one end of the country to the other just days after the funeral, Siobhán landed back in a rainy Belfast with the stuffing knocked out of her. “I knew the flat would be dark and I couldn’t figure out the heating and then I thought ‘oh feck it I don’t even have milk’.” Once she passed over the threshold, Siobhán was greeted by a warm virtual hug. “The girls - which encompasses the lovely Dylan Llewellyn - had come in and they had filled the fridge, laid out fluffy socks and slippers and a mug to drink loads of tea and wine. They just got it right. It’s a great gang and I include the crew in that. Big lovely faces with kind eyes.” Not only has Derry Girls created a tightly-knit group of friends, it has also equipped Siobhán with a platform through which she can express her preexisting political activism. Having lent her voice to the disenfranchised in a number of ways, the actress has fought for abortion rights and has been a mouthpiece for the North’s neglect. “I feel a great sense of obligation as I have an immense amount of privilege and I’ve been given a great education. It has happened that incidentally my platform has become much larger but I would always be saying things like this, it’s just that now people will possibly listen to me.” Siobhán takes comfort in the sense of solidarity and camaraderie she offers to the people working tirelessly and quietly behind the scenes. “The only way I can justify people being interested in what I say, is making sure that I have something interesting to say.” And I can guarantee, this woman has an abundance of interesting, thought-provoking things to say. If you’ve been lucky enough to secure yourself a ticket to her sold-out Galway 2020 Wild Atlantic Women event on Saturday, March 7, you’re in for a treat. Award-winning journalist, author and ‘always a Derry Girl’ Susan McKay will lead a winding conversation with Siobhán as they transverse through eye-rolling nuns, the state of the North and a good dose of tongue in cheekery.

7

“When I saw it was sold out, for me that’s not a compliment - I don’t take that personally. What I take is that, like with Repeal and Marriage Equality, it feels celebratory, it feels very positive and communal rather than lifting up one person over the next. It feels very joyful and communal and familial and I’m really interested in that. I’m deeply looking forward to being in a room and having the craic and experiencing that joy - it will be a wonderful way to celebrate International Women’s Day.” While speaking about International Women’s Day and what it means to be a successful woman in all aspects of her life, Siobhán boils down power and success to the importance of freedom and autonomy. “What I would define as a success in my life is autonomy. There’s the obvious connotations with Repeal, but there’s also the autonomy in acting to portray with authenticity the lives of women who I know exist and to be able to play them without any compromise. I think success is a lack of unfair compromise.” With Storm Ciara blowing between us, Siobhán McSweeney provides a compelling glimpse into the life of an actress, activist and Derry Girl, all from her perch in windy West London. A divil in nun’s clothing, Siobhán McSweeney is a force to be reckoned with both on and off set, with a strong voice that ought to be listened to. Unassuming, sincere and full of banter, Siobhán is equipped with an understanding of the world that is at once insightful and inspiring and, believe me, when Siobhán McSweeney is laughing, it’s next to impossible not to join her. The Cocktail Guide Contrary to popular belief, it’s not all creamy pints of Guinness and traditional tunes out wesht. Elegance, class and luxury ooze from the fine establishments lining our city’s streets, drawing us in with the tempting aroma of herbs, spices, fresh fruit and, well, alcohol. To help you elevate any evening with an expertly created cocktail, we’ve put together a guide to the very best places to savour these splendid mixed drinks. We’ve even included some chats with two of Galway’s finest mixologists and a recipe for one of our very favourite drinks to make at home.

Buddha Bar Escape the hectic nature of the city’s streets by ducking into Buddha Bar, where you’ll find a unique blend of Asian and Irish culture throughout their many boozy offerings. Buddha Bar values their customers’ trust in their creativity and mixology methods, aiming to exceed expectations with every visit. Making a public house a public home, the crew are constantly on the top of their game and will whip up just about anything you want. They could well even make one up on the spot - to keep things extra individual. Promoting local, homemade ingredients, there’s an intricate array of offerings behind that counter with plenty of infusions and fat-washed spirits to elevate the flavour of your drink. According to mixologist Tom Fallon, everyone who enters a bar should have a personalised experience. “I want to make menus a thing of the past. Bring the customers out of reality and let their feelings from the week guide their taste buds on the night”. Tom uses his creativity to give the customer a cocktail unique to their request. You can see from their constantly evolving menu that innovation is of paramount importance. Tom recommends... Stone’s Throw, which is made up of Micil Poitin, lemon, homemade kiawe, whites, dillisk and red méad float - all of which are sourced just a stone’s throw away Quiet Night In – Jalapeno infused vodka, homemade ginger, papaya, carrot and turmeric shrub, lime and mango, which is served up in a quirky noodle box! 14 Mary Street // (091) 563 749

Caribou One of those places that have perfected the basics, Caribou are constantly going that little bit beyond, adding little nuances that make it far more than the sum of its parts. Dedicated to providing the customer with a memorable experience, the team will welcome you with open arms and walk you through their huge selection of craft beers and spirits or the grub on offer. It’s all about creating a comfortable place to share stories, food, drinks and maybe even some smack talk over one of their many board games. The dim candle light and curated music creates that relaxed atmosphere it’s become known for. With rotational beers flowing on draught, specials mustered up in the kitchen daily and plenty of experimentation in the cocktail bar, there’s always something new to try. Their latest drinks menu includes exciting creations such as Flip The Bird - a jungle bird variation using clarified pineapple milk punch that gives a silky smooth texture in unifying the citrus notes of pineapple and lime while rounding off the intensity of the rum and campari and Coco Cherry Blush, which is an ode to the harvest and foraging, marrying sloe gin, cherry lambic beer with lemon, coconut, mint. 31 Woodquay, Galway // (091) 534 854

For the sweet and fruity lovers, test out their mouth watering range of strawberry, raspberry or passion fruit daiquiris - or if you’re feeling more adventurous, give their Kopperberg strawberry & lime gin daiquiri a try. For the hangover from hell, cure it with an orange Lucozade daiquiri to ease you back into looking at the texts from the night before. Or, go full Eiffel 65 and try their Blue WKD daiquiri. Like Harry says, why be someone’s cup of tea when you could be their cocktail. 77 Bohermore // 085 862 1840

Dorothy Creaven // Managing Director & Site Lead at Rent The Runway With a love for maths, physics, and taking circuit boards apart, a career in tech was always on the cards for Dorothy. Armed with a degree in electronic engineering, Dorothy was ready to take on the world of tech. From co-founding her own tech startup, to working with large corporations, Dorothy made her way back to our City of Tribes in April 2019 for an exciting new role. Now Managing Director and Site Lead for US-based company Rent the Runway, Dorothy is an absolute role model for all aspiring engineers. “In a sector that’s largely dominated by men, there’s a big opportunity for women to get more involved. It’s important for those of us already in the industry to help break down any barriers and to encourage more women to explore tech as a career option. It’s important to me to help ignite those interests in everyone, especially younger generations. The world of tech continues to move at a rapid pace, and all of us are responsible for how people in the industry evolve.”

Loretta Ní Ghabháin // Director of Lorg Media From producer to TV presenter, Loretta has always had a strong passion for storytelling. Driven by her love for Gaelige, Loretta has blossomed through her career in TG4, adapting to every role that came her way. Ahead of the social media game, this trailblazing lady spotted the power of the new media era and decided to forge her new business venture, Lorg Media. The word Lorg as Gaeilge means to seek, to find or leave an impression. Loretta combined her two passions to create a social media marketing company in the West of Ireland. “In an industry that’s constantly changing, it’s vital to upskill and keep learning. Here at Lorg, one of our favourite phrases is ‘Is fiú ór í an fhoghlaim #AgFoghlaimigCónaí’ which roughly translates to, learning is worth gold #AlwaysLearning. I think the day we give up that desire, we lose a little bit of our spark. Being a woman in business can be challenging, but with the right support from family and an energetic team around you, anything is possible.”

Gill Caroll // Business Owner at 56 Central

Ciara O’Neill // Artist

Blending her father’s entrepreneurship with her mother’s nursing, Gill has found herself as a leading lady in Galway’s hospitality scene. The driving force behind 56 Central, Gill began her journey at 5 / 6 Shop Street at the age of 16 waiting tables in Lynch’s Cafe. Equipped with a degree in Hotel Management and a knowledge gained from mistakes made in Scotland, the doors of 37 West were thrown open. Incredibly community-minded, Gill believes that every business should have a built in policy for giving back, which can be seen through her work with Galway Simon Community, Cystic Fibrosis and Big Brother Big Sister.

Hailing from the townland of Tuam, Ciara has always been a creative at heart. After graduating with a degree in Interior Design, Ciara moved to a warmer climate on the East coast of Australia, where she fell in love with the medium of resin. Inspired by the ocean and the beautiful coastline of Oz, Ciara began her new creative journey, creating mesmerising resin art. Focusing all her energy and time into perfecting her craft for a solid three years, Ciara now has a full collection of resin work, fine art prints and even her own jewellery range which is available in Two Wild Geese and also online at www.ciaraoneillart.com.

“My way of looking at it is that to be a successful businesswoman, you really need to know who you are as a person. You have to work on yourself to figure out who you are and what you stand for. There’s a lot of sacrifice in being self-employed and you need to keep up with the trends, constantly educate yourself and learn from other people.”

“I think it’s a wonderful feeling to follow your passion, and if that leads to a successful career, that’s the icing on the cake. Most artists work alone in their homes or studios, it’s important to persevere through the hard days and keep making work, no matter what. Surrounding yourself with likeminded people is also an integral part of it too.”

Women Making Waves

Catherine Doyle // Acclaimed Author

Béibhinn Parsons // Irish Women’s Rugby Player

What started off as a much loved hobby quickly flourished into a thriving career on a wing and a prayer as Catherine sent off her first full-length novel. Writing with authenticity, Doyle believes that when you write about what moves you, it will move people all across the world. Equal parts ambition, determination and resilience transformed a perceived impossibility into a reality and now eight years and many books later, Catherine Doyle is living her childhood dream.

At just eighteen years of age, Ballinasloe native Béibhinn is our youngest trailblazer. With seven caps to her name, this rocket winger has definitely made her mark on the opening two games of this year’s Women’s Six Nations. Juggling her studies with her sporting career, Béibhinn is a true inspiration for any young, aspiring sports star.

“I would not have gotten to the point I’m at without the support of other women. I feel very lucky to be a working and successful author but this isn’t a mountain I’ve climbed by myself. The industry is full of dedicated, passionate and ambitious women who all want to do their best, not just for themselves but for each other. Even though you’re the only person with your name on the book, it takes a village and a lot of that village is women.”

“The thing I’m most proud of is being recognised as a positive role model for younger women. It’s so important for young girls my age, that are still in school or starting college, to see someone represent our province and country at both a national and international level. Women’s retention in sport plummets at this age, so if I can be a role model to anyone, it makes it all worthwhile. It’s also so important to support and encourage each other in all paths of life, we need to have each other’s back.”

Joanna Zalech & Alex Kieldanowicz // Co-owners of Irish Socksciety As fate would have it, sole sisters Joanna and Alex didn’t cross paths until they both upped sticks and made the move from Poland to Galway. Evolving their initial business of selling Irish souvenirs into their universally loved sock company, Irish Socksciety is a brand filled with laughter and that good old-fashioned Irish craic and is a credit to their hard work and good humour. “We were not raised in Ireland, so it was very new to us to live in a culture with such a different form of communication. Being able to set up a business here as two women, who have families and gave birth to kids in the meantime was amazing. It’s a huge achievement and we are so proud of the result. We would tell anyone with a dream of starting a business that it’s never too late. Stay positive and have a sense of humor. Stay humble and always be professional with everything you do.”

Patricia Philbin // CEO of Galway 2020 From clerk typist to CEO, Patricia has certainly climbed up the public sector ladder. With 30 years of hard work and dedication to Galway City Council, this leading lady has gone from strength to strength in her career, rising to every task and opportunity. As CEO, Patricia has been an integral part of the Galway 2020 project since the very beginning. A Mayo lady at heart, Patricia is passionate about Galway and it’s cultural presence. “Being a woman in the public sector can be challenging, encouraging and rewarding. This year as we celebrate Galway as the European Capital of Culture, we’re faced with a diverse range of cultures and traditions, which can bring its own challenges. Starting out in GCC, senior roles were quite male-dominated, which I think was reflective of society at the time. I’ve always had outstanding support from my co-workers, which has led me to the role I’m in today. We’re blessed to have so many fantastic women on our 2020 team. It’s a true testament to how our society is evolving.”

Jess Murphy // Head Chef at Kai Restaurant Landing in Ireland at the age of 15 with nothing more than a battered old suitcase and a dream, native New Zealander Jess has become one of the most well-respected names in the culinary game. After nine years at the helm of a number of Galway’s finest eateries, Jess and her husband Dave opened Kai - a Michelin Bib Gourmand and multi-award winning restaurant beloved by many. An avid supporter of the Irish UNHCR, Chef Murphy is keen to be a mouthpiece for the way immigrants reflect on food, which makes up a large portion of Galway’s ever-evolving food scene. “The point I’m at now in my career is a gift because I can empower, mentor and respect the younger generation while building a really strong team. It’s important to teach everyone that everything always works out in the end and it’s never about how you fall, it’s about how you get up again. Nurturing people and teaching people is the best and it’s really rewarding.”

Sharon Nolan // Community Activist & Campaigner Always seeking to tackle the world’s inequalities, Sharon found her activistic voice through protesting. Becoming politically engaged during the Marriage Equality referendum, the power of door knocking and working collectively gave Sharon the courage to venture into the political sphere. A member of the Social Democrats since their inception, Sharon is now chairperson of their Galway West branch and sits on the party’s National Executive. Having been co-convener of the of Galway Together for Yes, Sharon’s is a voice you’re likely to hear shouting in the face of injustice. “Coming to politics not only from being a woman, but from being an LGBT woman, I didn’t know if there was a place there for me. I could have taken out all my piercings and changed my hair but I decided no, if I’m going to do it, I’m going to be me. One of my favourite things about being involved in activism and politics is the amount of amazing women I’ve met through it. We have a complete powerhouse of women at every level of the party.”

Sarah O’ Donnell // Co-Director of Little & Large Sarah is one of Galway’s leading ladies in the advertising world. Sarah and her husband Eoghan’s advertising agency has seen significant growth and success since they opened their doors just over two years ago in the heart of Galway’s Latin Quarter. With a huge grá for all things digital, social & strategy, this bright Galway native is paving the way for young, aspiring advertisers and marketers in the West of Ireland. “We took a risk “choosing happiness” and setting up a business doing what we love in our hometown, and are very proud of what we’ve achieved. We took a big leap leaving our steady jobs in Dublin, in search of a happier, more fulfilled life. It’s crucial to have a good work life balance and to surround yourself with great people. We are lucky to have five amazing women working on our team here, proving creativity and career progression is a real viable option in this industry in the West of Ireland.”

Who are you and what do you do? My name is Lisa Regan and I run a niche public relations company here in Galway called Lisa Regan Public Relations. Where’s your favourite place to be on a rainy day in Galway? When it’s raining, I would probably sneak into Charlie Byrne’s for a look. They’re dog-friendly there so I can bring my dog Toby along. I also like to go swimming out in Salthill, even if it’s pouring rain. What is your favourite part of your job? Getting to meet people who are passionate about what they do. I’m able to bring that idea to life through stories, language and communication. I’m obsessed with language and I don’t think people realise how important it is. It’s really lovely seeing an idea and watching it come to life. When people say, “Aw, I actually heard about that” - for me, that’s when it’s a job well done. What are your goals for the rest of 2020? For me, a big goal for the past four to five years - and leading into 2020 - has been to get everyone I’m working with to be more sustainably conscious. It’s been a leading light of my business. Sometimes I feel like I’m Captain Planet, but I need to keep pushing the agenda. There’s strength in numbers and power in people, so that’s a big goal of mine this year. What is it like being the Galway Girl boss? Oh my god, well that is not true at all - that’s hilarious! I’ll tell you, I got a lovely compliment at the weekend from Pól Ó Conghaile, who’s the travel editor from the Irish Independent. He said to me, “Lisa you’re fantastic. An unreal ambassador for the West of Ireland” - and I’ll take that. I’m really proud of where I come from and all the great things that we’re doing over here. How do you find a balance between your personal life and your work life being your own boss?

So, this is a thing we’re all striving for but it’s definitely something that I have a check on. Obviously, I work with a lot of different people and it’s all about them, so I like to start my day on my own terms. I always love to start the day with a swim, all year round. I’m out in Blackrock every morning. This morning was amazing, it was just after a full moon and the tide was full of energy. Turning off notifications is the best thing I do and I had to learn how to say no. At the end of the day, there’s nothing that can’t wait until tomorrow.

What do you think is the next logical step for more sustainable living in Galway? We need to get in a proper public waste management system. At the moment, our bins are for all rubbish. People are getting used to dividing their rubbish at home, kids are doing it in school, yet we only have one bin system on the streets. Also, where are our bike lanes? It’s a small city but we have such a car culture. We need to move away from that and get people on their bikes. I also think we need public water stations around the city. Fortunately, we live in a democracy, but that democracy has to work for us. What is the best piece of advice you would give to young people in today’s world? Everything is an opportunity. Do things that take you out of your comfort zone and engage with people. Everyone is a whiz on their phones but then in real life, they can’t even make eye contact. You could meet someone at a job, a meeting or at an event and they could change your whole life. Get up, get out and engage in life around you. Watching Love Island isn’t going to get you anywhere. What inspires you the most? People around me inspire me. I see them doing incredible things, taking opportunities and risks and that inspires me. It’s not even about being a success, it’s just about taking the chance. I always think you don’t have to be the best at everything in life, but you do have to try. Is Toby the real mastermind behind your operation? Tobes is the CEO and the brains behind it all- he is an absolute genius. He’s the most beautiful little guy and he’s such a buzzer, I’m so lucky. He goes everywhere with me, I tried to teach him how to swim and he sank. No one really talks to me anymore, they’re always just like “Howya Tobes”. What does it mean to be a successful woman in business? I think it’s about remaining true to yourself and not running ragged chasing everything that’s out there. If you’re earning what you need to live a sustained happy life, you can give time back to different projects and give people a leg up when they need it. I think that’s what success is. I’d love to see more women being championed in different roles. Hopefully going forward people will believe in themselves more and put themselves out there and go for it. Come on girls!

WHAT’S going ON?

March Highlights... Contrary to popular belief, March has a whole lot more to offer than just St Patrick’s Day. From Wild Atlantic Women to illuminating art installations, this month is shaping up to be one for the books. No matter who you are or what you’re into, Galway’s always got something good on offer that will suit you down to the ground.

1.

Wild Atlantic Women: Derry Girls Any fans of Derry Girls out there? Of course there are! Well now is your chance to get to know Siobhán McSweeney, who plays the brilliant Sister Michael in the side-splitting Northern Irish comedy. She’ll be in conversation with Susan McKay to talk about her life, career, politics, messing and more! This is part of a series of talks and interviews organised by Galway 2020 to celebrate the wonderful women of the Wild Atlantic Way throughout Spring. MARCH 07 // An Taibhdhearc

Eclectics: NewDad w/ Canaries

Hoolie w/ Chaos In The CBD

2.

Yet again, Eclectics are putting together a stellar line-up of original Irish music in The Black Gate throughout March. The highlight of this month’s programme sees the exciting young band, NewDad, bring their fun, easy-listening brand of alternative rock to the hallowed downstairs room of the Francis Street wine bar. What’s more, one of the most talented groups of musicians to ever come out of Galway will be re-forming to act as support on the night. We cannot wait to hear Canaries again! MARCH 11 // The Black Gate

Holy Moly, what a show! Electric has only gone and booked one of the hottest names in house music at the moment, as they welcome Chaos in The CBD for a very special Hoolie. Hailing from Auckland, New Zealand, brothers Ben and Louis write, produce and DJ emotional, sophisticated club anthems with a focus on partying. They take inspiration from the worlds of RnB, Pop and beyond. It’s going to be a big one...

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in traditional Irish style, as the town of Moycullen is filled with music for revellers to be swept up in.
