ardal o’hanlon ARDAL O’HANLON’S IS A FACE WE ALL KNOW AND LOVE, WHETHER IT’S SHINING DOWN FROM THE STAGE DURING ONE OF HIS STAND-UP SETS, GLEAMING FROM THE SMALL SCREEN AS DI JACK MOONEY IN DEATH IN PARADISE OR REMINDING US OF OUR LOVE FOR THE HAPLESS FR DOUGAL MAGUIRE IN RERUNS OF FR TED. AS SOMEONE WHO WAS RAISED ON EPISODES OF THE CRAGGY ISLAND CHAOS, SPEAKING TO ARDAL ON HIS JOURNEY INTO COMEDY, THE IMMORTALISATION OF THE SHOW AND RURAL IRELAND’S GOOD OLD-FASHIONED HATRED OF NOTIONS WAS A THING OF DREAMS. BRINGING THE SHOWING OFF MUST GO ON TO GALWAY’S TOWN HALL THEATRE ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26, THIS IS ONE SHOW YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS… ARDAL O’HANLON ONCE SAID THAT IF YOU’RE A STAND-UP, YOU’RE A STAND-UP FOREVER AND THOSE SENTIMENTS CERTAINLY RING TRUE TO WHERE HE’S AT NOW. WHILE IT’S BEEN SIX YEARS SINCE HE’S PROPERLY TOURED, HE’S BEEN POPPING IN AND OUT OF CLUBS AND FESTIVALS AROUND THE COUNTRY AND OVERSEAS TO MAKE SURE HIS FUNNY BONE DOESN’T GET TOO RUSTY. “I’VE ALWAYS DONE IT AND IT’S A BIG PART OF MY LIFE. THERE’S NO ESCAPING IT ONCE YOU START AND NOW THAT I’VE ACCUMULATED QUITE A LOT OF MATERIAL OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS, I FEEL I HAVE A LOT TO SAY, RIGHTLY OR WRONGLY. I ENJOY STAND-UP MORE AS I GET OLDER AND THAT’S THE REALITY.” AS SOMEONE WHO HAILS FROM COUNTY MONAGHAN, ARDAL IS ALL TOO FAMILIAR WITH RURAL IRELAND AND ITS BLATANT DISREGARD FOR SHOWING OFF IN ANY CAPACITY. “YOU WERE ENCOURAGED TO KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN, EVEN IF YOU HAD TALENT YOU WEREN’T ENCOURAGED TO SHOW IT OFF IN ANY MEANINGFUL WAY - UNLESS IT WAS IRISH DANCING, THEN YOU MIGHT JUST ABOUT GET AWAY WITH IT!” O’HANLON RECALLS THE FEAR OF WHAT THE NEIGHBOURS MIGHT THINK, A CONSIDERATION THAT WAS INGRAINED INTO HIS PSYCHE FROM AN EARLY AGE. “IF YOU GOT NEW CLOTHES YOU WEREN’T ALLOWED TO WEAR THEM. YOU’D GET THESE NEW CLOTHES BUT YOUR MOTHER WOULD SAY ‘DON’T WEAR THEM’ AND IT WOULD BE A YEAR BEFORE YOU’D BE BRAVE ENOUGH TO PUT THEM ON! THERE WAS ALWAYS THIS FEAR OF WHAT THE NEIGHBOURS WOULD THINK AND IN SOME ASPECTS IT’S A GOOD THING BUT I WAS ALWAYS CONFLICTED, BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY STAND-UP IS SHOWING OFF, PUTTING YOURSELF OUT THERE CENTRE STAGE IN THE SPOTLIGHT AND I’VE ALWAYS HAD THAT INTERNAL CONFLICT; WHO DO I THINK I AM? WHY DO I THINK I SHOULD DO IT?”

“I just like it, it’s more than a job, it’s a vocation. It gives me a purpose in life and adds real meaning and definition to my life.” As Ardal grew up, he had no solid plan for what direction he wanted his life to take. In one sense, he fell down the rabbit hole of comedy not realising that there would be a hugely successful career, both on stage and on screen at the end of it. Once he stepped into the spotlight at his first gig, which featured an extremely red faced Ardal clad in a “horrible multi-coloured jumper” (his words, not mine!), his fate was sealed. Since comedy was in its infancy in Ireland at the time, O’Hanlon knew he would have to head further afield if he wanted to make a dent in the comedy community. “It was always a bit uncultivable, I always knew I was going to go to London, that was the ultimate plan. [In Ireland], you couldn’t go on TV to do it, there was nowhere really to play outside Dublin except for a handful of clubs. There was one in Galway, the GPO was brilliant. I used to love going down there, run by Gerry Mallon, the legend that he is and then there was one in Cork and Belfast too, and that was kind of it. Those were the only times you’d venture outside of Dublin to do comedy. It was inevitable that anyone who had any ambition would go to London. It just took off for me when I moved over there.” And take off it did. Having established a somewhat simple, uptight stand-up persona due to the nerves of his earlier sets, Ardal had been unwittingly honing the character of Fr Dougal many years before there was even a whisper of the role. Having gotten to know the writers socially, they suggested that Ardal audition for the part of Dougal and once he was called back to audition with Dermot Morgan, the deal was sealed. “At the time, in the cockiness of youth, you don’t think much about that. I didn’t know too much about the job or what was involved in making a sitcom or the potential popularity of it, you don’t think of those types of things at all. I had gigs to do, I was gigging every night of my life so I was running around like a mad man! Once it all came together we got a sense of just how good it was.” Now, almost 25 years on, we still see references to the iconic show at every turn. Whether it’s warnings of ‘careful now’ and ‘down with this sort of thing’ at protests, or regular claims that the money was just ‘resting in my account’, it’s safe to say that the legacy of the show has lived on.

“I’m always chuffed when I see it being referenced in the Dáil, on the news or at a protest or even in court sometimes you hear barristers saying ‘it’s like something out of Fr Ted!’. It’s hilarious! I didn’t realise it would seep into the consciousness in the way it did.” Setting the tone for the next generation of Irish television, Fr Ted walked so that Derry Girls could run. “I don’t think you’d have Derry Girls if you didn’t have Fr Ted and I think that Lisa McGee, the writer, would say that herself. She was a huge fan of Fr Ted. I’ve worked with her a few times myself and she would freely acknowledge the debt to Fr Ted. Likewise for Irish stand-ups, Fr Ted was a huge touchstone for anyone in comedy”. The sitcom gave a whole host of aspiring young Irish comedians the footing to showcase their talents, from Tommy Tiernan and Jason Byrne to Pat McDonnell and Joe Rooney all appearing in hilarious guest roles. “I think it probably showed a generation of Irish comedians that if you do well in comedy you can end up in sitcoms and things like that. I think Fr Ted showed that you can start off in The International Bar not knowing your arse from your elbow and you can end up on a sitcom on British TV a few years later. Everything is possible.” Ardal’s time filming the scenes that were destined to be cherished for decades to come created hugely happy memories, but what really intrigued me is how the funnyman dealt with the sudden surge of fame that goes hand in hand with being part of such a phenomenon. “Like most normal people I wouldn’t see myself in that way at all, but obviously it dawns on you that people recognise you. I think at first I found it quite uncomfortable. I mean in certain ways I quite liked it because you’d get free tickets to football matches but overall I don’t think I changed that much as a person. Maybe I went into my shell a bit, that would probably have been my first reaction. I didn’t really like that kind of heat to begin with but over time you learn how to navigate it a bit better and you just carry on with your life.” For Ardal, the main concern was making sure that he was doing his work to the highest possible standard. “There is obviously some ego involved, you wouldn’t be doing stand-up or acting if there wasn’t but ultimately it was about doing the best work I could do, whether that was in stand-up or acting. Trying to express yourself as clearly as possible, that’s what it’s all about ultimately.” While it would be easy to assume that Ardal may have been pigeonholed into roles of a similar nature post-Fr Dougal success, the reality is that he has the ability to seamlessly

7

TRANSITION INTO ROLES OF VARYING COMPLEXITY. “I WAS VERY LUCKY IN THAT I ALWAYS GOT JOBS IN TELEVISION AND SOME OF THEM WERE A BIT LIKE FR TED, SHOWS LIKE MY HERO ON BBC I WAS PLAYING A SIMILARLY GOOFY CHARACTER, BUT I GOT OTHER OPPORTUNITIES IN SKINS AND DOCTOR WHO AND I ENJOYED ALL THOSE ROLES.” NOT CONFINING HIS TALENTS TO ONE PARTICULAR AVENUE, ARDAL HAS ALWAYS SPENT HIS TIME DIPPING INTO AN ARRAY OF DIFFERENT CREATIVE FIELDS. “I WAS ALWAYS DOING STAND-UP, BUT THEN I’D OFTEN GO OUT AND BE WRITING STUFF AND I GOT INVOLVED IN DOCUMENTARIES AS WELL SO I WAS ALWAYS DOING OTHER THINGS. I WAS NEVER THAT CONCERNED ONE WAY OR ANOTHER BECAUSE YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO WORK HARD IF YOU WANT TO GET ON BUT I TOOK BUT A PHILOSOPHICAL APPROACH, IN THAT I DIDN’T QUITE KNOW WHERE IT WOULD GO NEXT AND WAS ALWAYS CURIOUS AND SLIGHTLY ANXIOUS ABOUT WHERE IT WOULD GO, BUT IT WAS ALWAYS A NICE SURPRISE!” THE LIFE OF ARDAL O’HANLON IS ONE FILLED WITH VARIETY. FOR THE PAST FOUR YEARS, THE ACTOR HAS SPENT HALF HIS TIME SOAKING UP THE SUN IN THE CARRIBEAN WHILE FILMING DEATH IN PARADISE (WITH PLENTY OF RUM, OF COURSE), WHILE KEEPING UP HIS STAND-UP PERFORMANCES BACK HOME IN IRELAND. “STAND-UP IS MORE SOLITARY, YOU’RE ON YOUR OWN ALL THE TIME, YOU’RE IN YOUR OWN HEAD A LOT OF THE TIME. I LOVE THE VARIETY AND I’VE ALWAYS LOVED THE VARIETY THROUGHOUT THE LAST TWENTY OR THIRTY YEARS. IT’S JUST BEEN ONE OF THE BEST THINGS ABOUT MY JOB BECAUSE I GET TO DO THESE VASTLY DIFFERENT THINGS.” TWO YEARS AGO, ARDAL BROUGHT HIS WORK IN PROGRESS TOUR TO THE PEOPLE OF GALWAY AND ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26, WE’LL GET TO SEE THAT WORK COME TO FRUITION IN THE SHOWING OFF MUST GO ON. FOR ARDAL, THE FIRST OBLIGATION OF A COMEDIAN IS TO BE FUNNY, IT’S AS SIMPLE AS THAT. GOING INTO A BIT MORE DETAIL, HE TELLS ME, “I SUPPOSE LIKE ANY STAND-UP SHOW, IT’S ABOUT YOUR RESPONSE TO THE WORLD AROUND YOU. THAT COULD BE A RESPONSE TO WHAT’S GOING ON IN POLITICS, WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE POPULAR CULTURE, RELATING TO GETTING OLDER AND BEING A MAN IN TODAY’S WORLD, ALL THOSE KIND OF THINGS. IT’S VERY GENERAL BUT I SUPPOSE YOU JUST BOIL DOWN ALL YOUR EXPERIENCES AND ALL YOUR FEELINGS AND THOUGHTS AND TRY AND COME UP WITH PITHY JOKES OR STORIES. IT’S KIND OF JUST WHERE YOU’RE AT IN LIFE, HOWLING INTO THE VOID.” THERE WASN’T ONE MOMENT DURING MY CONVERSATION WITH ARDAL O’HANLON THAT I DIDN’T HAVE A SMILE PLASTERED ON MY FACE. FROM LAUGHING ABOUT OUR COMMON RURAL IRELAND UPBRINGINGS TO HEARING ABOUT ONE OF HIS STAND-OUT INTERACTIONS WITH THE PUBLIC - WHICH INVOLVED A VERY DISGRUNTLED MEMBER OF THE LONDON METROPOLITAN POLICE BEING JEERED AT BY A CRIMINAL FOR HIS CLOSE RESEMBLANCE TO FR DOUGAL - IT CERTAINLY WAS ENTERTAINING TO SAY THE LEAST. ONE OF THE MOST GENUINE AND EASYGOING PEOPLE I’VE HAD THE PLEASURE OF TALKING TO, ARDAL O’HANLON SPEAKS WITH REAL CONVICTION AND THE LOVE HE HAS FOR HIS CAREER IS CRYSTAL CLEAR. HE’S A SOUND FELLA, DESPITE HIS FECKIN’ NOTIONS!

DISCOVER NEW ADVENTURES FIND THE BEST PLACES IN GALWAY FROM PEOPLE WHO SHARE YOUR INTERESTS

We’ve already covered the headliners in our previous issue, with Bill Bailey lighting up the cover and John Bishop, Jason Byrne and a whole heap of other cheeky faces appearing throughout. Running from October 22 to 28, the Vodafone Comedy Carnival always fills the city with side-splitting laughter and a real sense of divilment. Aside from the main events, there’s plenty of other shenanigans taking place across 18 of the city’s finest venues. So if you’re looking for a laugh, there’s plenty of options... Starting out with Shappi Khorsandi, a comedian, author, cultural icon and, most recently, someone who agreed to be tortured on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! (we don’t know why either), Shappi is a woman of many parts but live comedy is where she comes alive. Having established herself as one of the UK’s finest comedians back in 2006 with her sell-out Asylum Speaker show, she’s even got a bestselling book under her belt. Also appearing over the week is the grouchy guy that was the inspiration for the iconic Moe Szylak from The Simpsons, Rich Hall. His critically acclaimed dead-pan style make him a master of absurdist irony and the king of rapid-fire wit. Having won the Perrier Award, you’re guaranteed a laugh here. The laughs don’t stop there as Kevin McAleer will will be making a highly anticipated return to Galway almost twenty years since he first coined the word ‘mindfulness’. You can expect an Advanced Awareness Seminar promising total self-discovery as you’re guided through a state of deep relaxation, clearing your mind of thoughts and replacing them with meaningless laughter. Meanwhile, Seann Walsh will be showcasing his award-winning wit after his controversial appearances on Strictly Come Dancing. We all know this pretty face from the small screen, so prepare for the real deal. That’s not all, as Paul Currie will be lending his absurd wit to the festivities. You’re invited to “come plunge your human meat gloves into this zeitgeist pavlova as you gently take each other delicately by the frontal cortex and we all ascend into the sparkling mind-satchel of comedian and immersive stand-up artist Paul Victor Currie”, so yeah, that really just says it all. As well as all those comedic favourites, there’s plenty of other shenanigans. The Spencer Jones 50 Minute Disco Experiment may seem like a bad idea, but it’s set to offer a totally different and completely bonkers experience each night, with special guests joining in the noise in a number of different ways. The Comedy Club Crawl combines top class comedy with the craic of a pub crawl and the mystery of a blind date. Last but certainly not least, the Roast Battle & Dark Show will have you evil people laughing at someone else’s pain. The Roast Battle involves comedians competing to find the most soul-destroying to defeat their opponent (lineup to be announced). The Dark Show is a late night comedy offering where nothing is off limits and no one gets offended, headlined by the “raucous, offensive and downright crude” Mike Wilmot.

O’Connor’s Bar Take it all in - a statue of The Man of Aran, clothes drying on a line across the open fire. Clocks and crocks. Pots and road signs. Mirrors, bells and lanterns. Photographs and newspaper clippings. A wagon wheel, ship wheels, a propeller. A netted constellation of seashells overhead. However, the decor is not the only interesting thing about O’Connor’s – it’s no theme bar. It just happens to have been run by three generations of a family of eccentrics since opening in 1942. O’Connor’s is a traditional Irish pub with live music nearly every night and is known for a guaranteedperfect Guinness every time (but for something stronger, it boasts some 40 brands of both whiskeys and gins behind the bar). Unusually, they open at 7:30pm in the evening, and with no food or TV, you are left with genuine banter and conversation – exactly what pubs should be made for. Blackrock Bar at Salthill Hotel Superior dining isn’t all this 4 star hotel has to offer, they’ve also got a fantastic bar and terrace that are always filled with a real buzz of activity. With finger food platters readily available, this is a great place to celebrate all occasions and it’s ace for brunch, lunch or an evening meal. The Promenade, Salthill // (091) 522 711

LE BOOM HAVING SPENT THREE INSANE YEARS RISING TO THE TOP OF THE IRISH DANCE MUSIC SCENE AND TOURING THE WORLD WITH THEIR UNIQUE BLEND OF ELECTRO-INDIE-HOUSE-POP, CHRISTY LEECH AND AIMIE MALLON ARE PUTTING THE BRAKES ON THEIR LE BOOM JOURNEY FOR THE TIME BEING. THIS HIATUS WILL GIVE THE PAIR A CHANCE TO STEP BACK AND LOOK AT THEIR CATALOGUE IN DETAIL AND ALLOW THEM TO SPEND SOME WELL DESERVED TIME IN THE STUDIO, BUT NOT BEFORE THEY’VE TORN THE ROOF OFF THE RÓISÍN DUBH ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18. OVER THE SUMMER, BETWEEN FESTIVAL APPEARANCES AND GIGS GALORE, I GOT THE CHANCE TO CHAT TO THE INCREDIBLY SOUND CHRISTY LEECH ABOUT THE MANY THINGS THAT HAVE MADE LE BOOM WHAT IT IS. ORIGINAL, INNOVATIVE AND INTOXICATING, LE BOOM TUNES ARE SOMETHING SPECIAL. HAVING BOTH GROWN UP IN COUNTY MEATH, THE DUO WERE BROUGHT TOGETHER BY THE DUBLIN MUSIC SCENE JUST THREE SHORT YEARS AGO. WHILE CHRISTY HAD BEEN PLAYING LE BOOM UNDER A FEW DIFFERENT GUISES, IT WASN’T UNTIL HE SAW AIMIE PLAYING AT A GIG THAT THE DUO CAME TO FRUITION. THE PAIR PERFORM WITH SUCH CHEMISTRY AND CAMARADERIE, SEAMLESSLY FLOWING THROUGH THEIR SET WHILE RADIATING A BUZZ LIKE NO OTHER, IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE THEY AREN’T LIFE LONG FRIENDS. “I LOVE WHEN WE’RE PERFORMING LIVE TOGETHER, THERE’S SOMETHING VERY SPECIAL ABOUT THE TWO OF US UP THERE, MYSELF AND AIMIE. THAT’S WHAT WE ALWAYS COME BACK TO, IT’S OUR COMFORT ZONE.” WITHIN THE GROUP, CHRISTY LIKES TO BE INVOLVED IN ALL ASPECTS OF THE CREATIVE PROCESS. “I LIKE TO BE PART OF ALL OF THE DIFFERENT PARTS, THE MUSIC IS JUST ONE ELEMENT OF IT. IT’S GREAT TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT AND NIALL [BYRNE, THEIR MANAGER] HAS ENABLED ME TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT AND MAKES SURE I HAVE TIME TO DO IT.” WHILE CHRISTY WRITES, PRODUCES, SINGS AND PLAYS THE KEYS, AIMIE PLAYS THE PERCUSSION LIKE NOTHING YOU’VE EVER SEEN BEFORE. GLASS BOTTLES, COWBELLS AND ALL THINGS WEIRD AND WONDERFUL ARE INCORPORATED INTO BOTH THEIR RECORDINGS AND THEIR LIVE SETS TO CREATE A SIGNATURE SOUND UNIQUE TO LE BOOM.

37

While most dance music producers come from a DJing background, Le Boom arrived at their sound through an indie, songwriting approach which in turn evolved into house and dance-driven music. “I would have come from a different background in terms of indie stuff, whereas Aimie would be more into the heavier side of dance music. Techno is her big thing, it’s her first love. We both came from different angles and we settled on what we have now.” An almost indescribable sound that encompasses an array of different genres, the music that Le Boom produce is in a whole other dimension. Christy cut his creative teeth while staying in an artist’s commune in New York City, where he lived rent-free in return for a monthly show of the tenants’ creative talents. (I’m not even slightly jealous, you are!). “There would be music, there was a drag artist, painters, poets, whatever really. It was just a mad night once a month and you had no choice but to be creative, it was great. When I got there I didn’t have a band so I just recorded different parts myself and looped them up, and I think when you start looping things, everything starts to feel more dance-y, it gets a natural verve or rhythm. I think that’s what started me getting into loops and dance music.” Getting booked for gigs before they had even created enough material to fill a set, Christy and Aimie had to work hard and fast to keep up with the momentum they had built. “We were literally pulling all nighters for a week before a show to try to write and get a set together. It was mental and we never really got enough time to say ‘is that good or is it bad’ it was just like ‘is it done? Okay let’s move on’.” With this level of pressure came an intensity that enhanced their natural sound and added an air of spontaneity to it. “That was cool because there was an energy in that, but I think now with this break we’re taking we can take a step back and take a slightly more considered and less rushed approach to it all.” Starting off with the melody and chords and morphing it into something that will bring even the driest of shites to the dancefloor, each song encapsulates a very unique air that is synonymous with Le Boom. Having teamed up with Æ Mak earlier this year on the incredibly catchy tune ‘Dancing Bug’, Aoife McCann certainly pulled the duo out of their comfort zone. “It was really easy, we had the tune together in about three or four hours and we decided to leave it really simple and bare and not touch it much.

38

It was sitting there and we didn’t really know what to do with it until Aoife suggested a video. She completely pulled us out of our comfort zone, she had us dancing in the video, which is something we never did. It was such a great day.” I don’t know about you, but the video - which features the trio, accompanied by a colourful entourage, bopping through Stoneybatter in perfectly synchronised unison - makes me want to head out and frolic through Shop Street every time. Having appeared at some of the best festivals in the world, from Primavera Sound Pro to Electric Picnic, and performed in venues across New York, Reykjavik and Bilbao, Le Boom have become known for their energetic, sweat-drenched live shows. “We put absolutely everything into it, it’s such a huge part of what we do. The releases have been fine but the live shows have really been what’s got our name out there and what’s gotten us all of the gigs. It’s a pretty sweaty, mad, club vibe.” “I have to say that while travelling to shows and all that can be a bit of a pain in the arse, when you’re actually there and you’re up on stage, the two of us, and we start playing it just turns into this great vibe and i love that feeling.” If you’re one of the lucky few who’ve got your hands on tickets for their Róisín Dubh gig this month, you can expect some serious scenes. “The Róisín Dubh has been an amazing venue, we played there New Year’s Eve and it was just incredible, there was an amazing response. I think because it’s such a small venue and the crowd is right up on top of you and there’s just such a great energy.” Christy goes on to say how these more intimate venues compare to bigger festival sets. “Sometimes when we’re playing the really big shows, which are great too, you’re actually physically so far away from the crowd. It can be a little bit harder to get that real buzz and energy of the crowd, whereas you’ve got no choice when you have people literally right underneath you. In places like the Róisín you can really feel it. It brings you to another level of buzz.” In their three years of performing live and evolving and elevating their sets, Le Boom have encountered a whole lot of career highlights already. From closing the main stage at Sea Sessions to playing after the insanely talented Caribou at last year’s Galway International Arts Festival afterparty, the stand out peak for Christy has to be closing the main stage of Body & Soul a couple of years back.

“We were on our way down to play Body & Soul for the first time and we got a call to say that an act were stuck in Berlin and couldn’t make it, so would we mind closing the main stage after Metronomy. At the time this was just bananas because we would have literally been playing only a year and a bit but just to get that call was incredible and it was a moment I’ll never forget.” But all this success didn’t come without some challenges. “Just keeping up with the shows can be a little bit of a challenge but to be honest with you we’ve just been really really lucky. From day one we were getting gigs before we even had the songs for the gigs. We were getting huge amounts of work ourselves and for the first year and a half before we had a manager, we spent so long emailing people and begging for slots and doing all that groundwork. We’ve been hugely lucky that we’ve gotten this far but at the same time we’ve also put in huge amounts of work. It’s been pretty tough but it’s been amazing.” As one of Ireland’s newest musical success stories, I had to pick Christy’s brain on whether he’s got any words of wisdom for anyone hoping to dip their toe in the Irish music scene. “Do something that’s unique to you as opposed to trying to be better than other people,” Christy advises. “Be better at being you because if you’re trying to put yourself in competition with other people, it just takes the realness away from what you’re doing. And also I think it just kind of backfires because you end up sounding like other people. Just focus on what makes you different and do that well.” Remaining modest in the face of great success, it was an absolute pleasure to speak to the legend that is Christy Leech. His musical and production talents, married with Aimie’s unconventional percussion creates something that’s pure and utter magic. While we’ll be sad to see their pretty faces dip into the shadows for a little while, we know they’ll be back and better than ever. Until that time comes, I’ll be listening to ‘What We Do’ on a loop, trying not to cry. Words by: Sarah Gill / @sarahgill97 Photos by: Peter Fleming
