KATHY ROSS Capturing the colours of Galway with wool and thread Images by: Ciarán MacChoncarraige
Local artist Kathy Ross has uncovered success in an unlikely way: she creates landscapes and portraits using wool and thread. Most recently, she created portraits of sheep using sheared wool, straight from the farm. “It’s mind-blowing, really,” Kathy says, when asked about it. She’s been a full-time artist for six years, focusing mainly on watercolour painting, but had grown frustrated with the two-dimensional feel of the work. “I started experimenting with textiles just last year, just making small little textiles based on Galway landmarks: the Long Walk, the Latin Quarter. People just absolutely loved them; they can see the work that’s involved in them.”
Using a bit of paint she sets the scene, and then uses wool for the landmarks. With thread she stitches in the details: the ripple of water, the name of a pub, even faces. Lately, she’s been making portraits of local sheep. Project Baabaa, one of the few events pre-approved by Galway2020 for a full year-long program, approached her in March ahead of their launch. Their goal is to promote the history of sheep in Galway. “We moved out to Tuam two years ago from an estate,” Kathy says, “and I was really taken with the landscape and the animals, so I was doing portraits of the animals in watercolour. I had done a few textile portraits by the time Project BaaBaa approached me – but only one sheep! “I started making sheep and I didn’t really know what kind of breeds I was making, so I started chatting to a few of the local farmers. They were just blown away when they saw what I was doing. They’ve been brilliant,” Kathy says. “They’ve been coming down with little packages of wool for me, taking me out to visit rare breed sheep. From there even it’s grown.” Project BaaBaa launched in June with an exhibition of weavers, knitters, spinners, dyers and cheese-makers. And Kathy says her own work has exploded since then. “When I started Project BaaBaa, I wanted to get Irish wool to make Irish sheep,” Kathy says. “It’s almost impossible. All the Irish sellers were getting it from abroad.” Today, it costs farmers around €3 to shear a sheep. For the amount of wool that gives, farmers can expect to get a .50 cent return. Even wool from Galway sheep, a rare breed that gives wool close to merino-quality, sells for almost nothing where it used to bring in close to €15 a kilo.
“When I met with the spinners and weavers [at the Project BaaBaa launch], they showed me how to treat raw wool from farmers. So now I can get my own wool and treat it and clean it,” Kathy says. The farmers who were keen to help her learn about the breeds of sheep have also been sending her their wool for commissioned portraits. She replicates their breed, or a particularly beloved sheep from the farm, using that same wool. But it’s not all sheep. “As an artist, my attention needs to be constantly stimulated so I usually have two totally different projects on the go at the same time,” Kathy says, which means her landscape work isn’t going anywhere. “If I’m working on a sheep commission, I tend to have a landscape going as well that’s really colourful. If I get annoyed with one project, I can move onto the next one and vice versa. With my camera as well, any time I go into Galway I’m snapping the whole time.” She also teaches eight classes a week in Tuam; three for adults, and five for children. “The adult classes are mostly watercolour and oil painting. With the kids, it’s so much fun. Today, I was working with kids in Tuam library and they got to pick their favourite illustrator and we went step by step on how to draw cartoons. We do the kids classes in seven week blocks, so we have one week of weaving, one week of portrait drawing – something different each week.” While she’s hoping to collaborate on an exhibition in Tuam this winter, for the moment Kathy is focusing on turning out artwork, both for sale and for commissions. Her work can be found on social media, and there’s a website in the works. Follow Kathy Ross on Facebook @KathyRossArt and on Instagram @kathy_ross_art.

AN PUCAN
While this summer wasn’t exactly a bountiful one for the GAA teams of Galway, the county’s bars fared a bit better recently at the National Bar of the Year Awards, held at a Gala Black tie event in the Double Tree by Hilton. An Pucan led the way for Galway in terms of wins on the night with three trophies coming back to the Forster Street bar. The Bar of the Year Awards recognises the excellent bars, knowledgeable staff, high quality service, and innovation in the bar trade. Now in their twelfth year, the Bar of the Year Awards are the premium awards for the licensed trade. The Bar of the Year Awards are dedicated to raising the profile of the licensed trade and reminding consumers of the excellent service and quality that exists today within the licensed trade. An Pucan, which is renowned for its impressive social media following was voted the Connacht/ Ulster and Overall winner of the Southern Comfort People’s Choice Award Winner, a category which was voted for by customers. The other success for the East Village venue was the award for Best Outdoor Space for its amazing garden, which was redesigned early this year and has proved very popular with locals and visitors alike. The other Galway winners on the night were Tigh Nora who took home the gong for outstanding customer service and Caribou which was recognised as the best Craft Beer Bar in the country. Entries for this annual event come from bars, off licences hotels and nightclubs who want to celebrate the hard work they put into making their business unique and successful. These awards are hotly contested and represent a respected recognised achievement that certainly enhances the reputation of winners. The judges were industry experts from around Ireland who visited each premises as part of the judging process. 1 Forster St, Galway // (091) 376 561

CARIBOU Do Food
Images by: Boyd Challenger
There’s nothing better than heading to Caribou of an afternoon, browsing their everchanging craft beer rotation before deciding on something you’ve never heard of, and sitting down to a loud game of Cards Against Humanity with your mates and the strangers at the end of the table. Caribou came on the scene just under two years ago and quickly made a name for themselves as one of the best homes of craft beer around. Last month, they won ‘Craft Beer Bar of the Year’ at the Bar of the Year Awards 2018, and it’s no surprise. The chilled-out, no-notions atmosphere, wrap around bar, great tunes and comfy couches have made Caribou a favourite for afternoon pints and late nights since they opened. But it’s not all craft beer and good times. It’s also great food, cocktails and good times. The lads have always wanted to bring in their own food menu and now that Handsome Burger have flown the nest and left an empty kitchen, Caribou are jumping at the chance. Longtime friend and chef Kiwi Gilmartin has been enticed from the fine-dining scene in Dublin to head up Caribou’s pub grub
endeavours. His experience means great-tasting food and quick turnaround. From this month, Caribou will be bringing a menu of sharing food, perfect for enjoying with friends over pints and cocktails. Expect tasty “Fiddly Bits” like crackling with apple, jalapeno poppers, and a hundred types of croquettes. They’ll have vegan bites, too, and a few “big bite” favourites like burgers and lobster rolls. The menu will take full advantage of what’s available locally, from Galway’s abundant seafood to products from local farms and butchers. The favourite at the moment are “jammy chips” involving Herterich’s pork cuts cooked down into a sticky bacon jam. Their cocktail menu is small but mighty, with classic favourites and some creative new mixes, too. There’s something for everyone. They’re even bringing out their own house beer from a Western brewery which will pair great with their new grub. Now that autumn is rolling in with the gale-force winds and rain, Caribou is the perfect solution for food, drinks and late nights. Grab a table (the kitchen closes at 8 bells so get sat before then!), order a bit of food and you’re set for the night. 31 Woodquay, Galway City // (091) 534 854
DYLAN MORAN
Ireland has produced more than its fair share of world-class comedians, but Dylan Moran – who has been described as “the Oscar Wilde of comedy” – is truly one of our alltime greats. Originally from Navan, where he attended St. Patrick’s Classical School with Tommy Tiernan and Hector O hEochagain, he left formal education at the age of 16. “You try various things when you’re growing up,” he later recalled. “I was an attaché in the Foreign Service for a while and then I drove a bulldozer, but neither of those panned out for me… so it had to be stand-up.” His stand-up career swiftly skyrocketed. Moran was just 24 when he became the youngest-ever winner of the Perrier Award in 1996. His inimitable style – deadpan, witty and crackpot lyricism – won him many fans through such successful tours as Gurgling for Money, Monster and Yeah, Yeah. His unique interpretation of the world always swerves clichés and offers cutting blows to our idiosyncrasies. He has toured the globe many times, including versions of his shows as far afield as Kazakhstan, Ukraine and across the US. His last tour, Off the Hook, took in 149 dates around the world.

As an actor, Dylan’s notable screen roles include Notting Hill, Calvary, Shaun of the Dead and Run Fatboy Run. He has been a small screen success, too, co-writing and starring in the BAFTA-winning comedy Black Books. It has been suggested that the surly character of Bernard Black isn’t a million miles removed from his own persona. “Some people have told me that I’m grumpy; it’s not something that I’m aware of. It’s not like I walk around poking children in the eye… not very small ones anyway.” Having just completed a successful run at Edinburgh Fringe, Dylan is bringing his critically acclaimed new show, Dr. Cosmos, exclusively to the Vodafone Comedy Carnival. Dr. Cosmos will once again offer his unique take on love, politics, misery and the everyday absurdities of life, all served with poetical panache from one of the finest comedians of his generation. Dylan’s Galway shows will be his only Irish performances of 2018. “Home gigs can be hard because it’s an odd collision,” he once mused. “More than anything, I feel self-conscious when my family are in the audience. I’m doing this job which is not quite acting – part of it is me, part performance. You’re presenting a cartoon of yourself to people who know you as a line-drawing.”

SEAN LOCK “For me, shoes are just a barrier between dog shit and my socks.” One of the UK’s most highly acclaimed and original comedians, Sean Lock’s hilarious stand-up is the product of a hyperactive imagination combining surreal imagery and insightful observations on the human condition. GINA YASHERE “Things you wouldn’t hear in a weather forecast: ‘Why you looking at me for? Look out the fucking window!’” Gina Yashere’s distinctive voice was recently featured in the hit animated movie Early Man, but this Londoner is even more animated in her live performances. Her bombastic delivery, infectious personality and cheeky observations have wowed audiences across the globe. She has appeared numerous times at Just For Laughs in Montreal and Toronto, and at HBO and TBS’s The Comedy Festivalin Las Vegas. TV appearances have included her comedy special Skinny B*tch (Showtime), The Jay Leno Show (NBC), The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien (NBC), and Mock The Week (BBC). She recently shot her third stand-up special, Gina Yashere: Ticking Boxes, which was filmed at London’s iconic O2 Academy. Earlier this year she appeared in series 2 of The Standups on Netflix. The Evening Standardreckons that “her observations are as sharp as shrapnel.”
MILTON JONES One of the UK’s most successful stand-ups, Milton Jones’ acclaimed live shows Lion Whisperer, On The Road, Temple of Daft and Milton Jones is Out There have all played to well over 100,000 people. He’s equally popular on radio, having co-written and performed in 12 of his own radio series for BBC Radio 4. He is a previous Perrier Best Newcomer, the winner of two Sony Awards and a British Comedy Award nominee. His TV credits include Live at the Apollo (BBC 1), Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow (BBC 1), Mock The Week (BBC 2) and Dave’s One Night Stand (Dave). Considered the ‘king of the puns’, absolutely no-one can touch Jones when he hits his stride!

Best known as Murray from HBO’s Flight of the Conchords and Steve in TBS’ Wrecked, Rhys Darby is an actor, writer and stand-up comedian from New Zealand. His live show has been described as a sensational blend of sound effects, characterizations and askew observations. BEOGA
FEATURE SOCIAL WHITE:
The last time Beoga came to Galway, they opened for Ed Sheeran at Pearse Stadium after having collaborated on two of his latest tracks: the catchy and inescapable ‘Galway Girl’, and ‘Nancy Mulligan’. But Beoga have been on the contemporary trad scene long before that. With five studio albums under their belt and fifteen years playing together, the five-piece band have continually developed their sound, blending their trad roots with different genres. In 2017, Eamon Murray, bodhrán player and unofficial spokesperson for the band, told RTÉ: “In addition to ‘pure drop’ traditional music we can also look at ourselves as a rhythm section laying down a bed of sound on new projects, and if this helps bring more people to Irish music, all the better.” We got the chance to chat with Eamon ahead of their return to Galway this month for a show at the Róisín Dubh. First, of course, we wanted to ask him about touring with Ed Sheeran.
“The tour was amazing and Galway was a highlight, definitely one of my favourites. It was a bit of a hometown gig for me, and the band loved it. The whole tour was amazing. We’ve dreamed of doing something of that size, and to do it in Ireland and experience the country like that was great.” The love of Galway is no joke: Eamon himself recently moved from Belfast to Headford, just outside Galway City, with his family. Hopefully there will be more Beoga in Galway’s future. As far as Beoga’s ever-developing sound, Eamon says working with Ed provided a shift in perspective. “He doesn’t see any barriers,” he says. “He tries to bring music that he likes to as many people as possible, and we’re taking that attitude. We’re bringing a bit more of a contemporary sound for sure. We might go back to something that’s a bit more purist someday – but the music we’re making at the minute is more contemporary. Working with Ed opened up a lot of doors, working with different producers and labels... It’s definitely taken us in that direction, for sure.” When asked where Beoga are taking inspiration from at the moment, Eamon says for himself, he’s keeping an ear to the ground -- or the radio, more aptly. “We definitely have started paying more attention to what people are doing at the moment. We like loads of music that’s current – everyone likes George Ezra, all the One Direction lads’ solo stuff is really interesting. Everyone in the band is different, but certainly I love the Grime stuff that’s coming out of England.” They have new music in the works, but it’s very hush-hush at the moment. Early September will see them back in London at the recording studio, and they hope to have new material released by the end of the year, and to be back on tour in 2019. The future is definitely bright for Beoga and for new Irish trad music. See Beoga live at the Róisín Dubh on 28 September. Tickets at roisindubh.net.
