FEATURE
M
Musician, presenter, actor and author, Bill Bailey certainly is a man of many talents. A born funny man with an inexplicably quirky, intellectual wit, Bailey is one of the UK’s most wellrespected and recognisable comedic stars. From appearances on shows like Never Mind The Buzzcocks and QI to starring in the offbeat noughties sitcom Black Books, we’ve all seen Bailey’s lively blue eyes through our small screens at one point or another. Known for incorporating his musical abilities into his sets, the people of Galway are in for quite the show once the Vodafone Comedy Carnival rolls around this October. As if the likes of Ardal O’Hanlon, Jason Byrne and John Bishop weren’t enough, Bill Bailey will be bringing his Larks In Transit tour to Leisureland on October 26 and 27, and we can’t feckin’ wait. Described as a compendium of travellers’ tales and the general shenanigans of twenty years on the road, Larks In Transit incorporates musical virtuosity, surreal tangents and Bill’s trademark intelligence. If you haven’t yet had the pleasure of witnessing the genius of Bill Bailey in the flesh, you can expect a seamless fusion of science and history, popular culture and unrivalled witticism. An expert in timing, Bill leaves just enough silences for the intellectual absurdity of his humour to be appreciated. Tackling politics, philosophy and the pursuit of happiness, this tour has travelled the length and breadth of the United Kingdom, garnering rave reviews and raucous laughter along the way. Described by The Sunday Times as “comedy’s Mozart”, Bill Bailey is no stranger to critical acclaim. Having received a number of awards throughout his lengthy career, including Best Male On Screen Talent at the 2014 Royal Television Society West of England Awards for ‘Bill Bailey’s Jungle Hero’, Bill never fails to entertain whether it’s on stage or small screen.
PAGE 5.
A man with a keen interest in wildlife, Bailey’s birdwatching and baboon related intrigues have brought this Englishman to the far flung lands of Brazil, Estonia, Indonesia and Cape Town on his merry, nature-loving way and with two decades of touring around the globe in his arsenal, Bill Bailey is sure to have his fair share of antics to have us rolling in the aisles. Having sold out shows in Hong Kong and Singapore, Australia and New Zealand, this comedian’s rare variety of humour translates to audiences around the globe, making good old Bill from Somerset one of the brightest sparks of the generation. Throughout the show, you can prepare your senses for a symphony fashioned from a mobile ringtone, the real story of Old MacDonald and an excruciating encounter with Paul McCartney - it’s safe to say Lesiureland won’t know what hit it! It’s got to be said that the United Kingdom have churned out some great comedic characters over the years, and we’ve all got our favourites. Those rare few who have you in stitches as soon as they come on screen, before they’ve even opened their mouths. For us, Bill Bailey takes the cake. The grouchy eccentricities of his role in Black Books sucked us in, and his natural capability to leave us with tears streaming down our cheeks made us stay. Whether by stand up comedy, strange sitcoms or quiz show quips, Bill Bailey is some man for one man. Photos courtesy Vodafone Comedy Carnival Words: Sarah Gill / @sarahgill97

Vodafone Comedy Carnival The Vodafone Comedy Carnival, running from the 22nd to the 28th of October, is one of the main events in Galway’s cultural calendar. For 14 years, it has been bringing the best-loved and biggest names in comedy from right across the globe to Galway. This year’s programme looks bigger and better than ever with over 100 acts across 18 of the city’s best venues. But the real excitement comes when you take a glance at the amazing list of headliners. Have a read on to find out more...
John Bishop - Work in Progress The Liverpudlian legend is on his way back to Galway for a Work in Progress show. Cheeky, charming and oozing natural talent, John Bishop is a true comedy superstar. This is a rare opportunity to catch John in a venue smaller than a football stadium. John’s first TV appearance was back in 2007 on RTE’s The Panel which led to 8 out of 10 cats, Live at the Apollo, Mock the Week, Have I Got News For You and of course, The John Bishop Show. OCTOBER 22 & 23 // Leisureland
Ross Noble - Humournoid What happens when pure comedy takes human form? What happens when a creature is created and bred to do stand up? Nobody knows because that isn’t a thing. Ross Noble doing a comedy show is a thing, however, and now is your chance to come and see it. Eccentric, mainly improvised and surreal; Noble’s unique style of delivering his random and bright-eyed stream of consciousness will leave you filled with wonder as you cry with laughter. A truly (weirdly) entertaining performer. OCTOBER 26 // Black Box Theatre
Reginald D Hunter - Facing the Beast Reginald D Hunter returns to Ireland in 2019 with his highly anticipated brand new show. After twenty years of gifted storytelling and effortless dark humour, Facing the Beast showcases this gentleman southerner at his controversial and hilarious best. Reginald’s searingly honest material has garnered him a popular fan base that spans generations. He is one of the few performers to have been nominated over three consecutive years for the highly coveted Perrier Award. OCTOBER 25 // Town Hall Theatre PAGE 8.
SPOTLIGHT
Jason Byrne The Star of ‘Ireland’s Got Talent’ has had a hard year. But he doesn’t want to talk about that. He’s wrecked but ready. Ready for a laugh. This show is a celebration. A celebration of triumph over adversity. A celebration of the fact that everybody’s got their own crap going on and they don’t need to listen to someone else moaning about their problems. So, leave your worries at the door and find out why The Times described Jason as “The Outright King of Live Comedy”. OCTOBER 27 // Black Box Theatre
Ardal O’ Hanlon - The Showing Off Must Go On
Omid Djalili - Work in Progress
Where Ardal comes from (small-town Ireland) there is nothing worse than showing off. Yet he is a professional ‘show-off’ who continues to do stand up comedy for money. A very shy show-off (and as a result conflicted) but a big show-off nonetheless (i.e. a disgrace to his family). So why does he do it? Who knows? But one thing is for sure, he has consistently proven himself to be one of Ireland’s greatest living comedians. OCTOBER 26 // Town Hall Theatre
Legendary festival favourite, stand-up comedian, film & television star Omid Djaili returns to Galway. Intelligent, sometimes provocative and always entertaining, Omid’s stand-up is a hugely energetic and captivating comedy masterclass. He has been described as one of the most joyfully smart, stimulating and entertaining comedians. Omid has appeared in movies like Gladiator, The Mummy, Mamma Mia 2 and on Celebrity Apprentice. He is soon to star in His Dark Materials.
Dermot & Dave Two of Ireland’s favourite radio hosts, Dermot and Dave present yet another ridiculously funny show. Every year, the Today FM stalwarts sell out just as quickly as many world famous acts – they’re just that popular! Dermot said: “Imagine a bonkers radio show that grows legs and arms and a head and starts firing out craic and waving its arms like an angry King Kong in that movie. That’s not even close!”. Bingo Loco If you thought that Bingo was a boring game played solely by grannies, pensioners and incels then think again. Bingo has evolved – and how!! With sold out shows across Australia, Ireland and the UK, Bingo Loco has taken audiences by storm. They’ve flipped traditional bingo on its head and thrown in a few conga lines, dance offs, rave rounds, lip sync battles, glow sticks and prizes like vacations and cars! (or sometimes, even, lawnmowers) OCTOBER 24 & 25 // The Galmont Hotel
The Two Johnnies - Live Podcast and Book Launch with very special guests The Two Johnnies present the world’s leading podcast in the niche areas of riding, gaelic games and parish news. This unlikely global success story is the combination of Johnny B & Johnny Smacks. Producer Maura, Lauren and of course, Noel Furlong, has catapulted them to the No.1 position in Irish Podcast Charts every week for over 80 weeks! On top of that, these lads have racked up 10 million views on YouTube and have hundreds of thousands of followers and subscribers across social media. So this is definitely a show you want to catch if you want to keep up to date with the latest, on-trend craic. OCTOBER 25 // Leisureland
Waterford Whispers News Live Your favourite daily fake and funny news source is now a brilliant live show The hilarious show from the outrageously popular satirical website comes to Galway as they celebrate ten years online. In a stunning live show, two TV news anchors – Áine Ní Lása and Les Duggan – deliver a rapid-fire, subversive rollercoaster of a production complete with video reports, in studio interviews and spoof adverts. This unique show will have you in stitches and questioning every news broadcast you see from then on. OCTOBER 23 // Black Box Theatre Tickets on sale now through www.vodafonecomedycarnival.com and via OMG, Shop St, Galway 091 509 960. TGO is a firm favourite among Galway’s scholars for a host of reasons; their food is prepared with ethics and care, most of their herbs, salads and potatoes are grown locally in Galway or on their own 5 acre site where they also compost foodwaste. ‘A mysterious accident. A dead husband. People are talking. Secrets are resurfacing from the depths. Is the past ever truly dead?’ Continuing their year of new writing, Druid presents the world premiere of The Beacon, a new play by Nancy Harris, in a co-production with the Gate Theatre, Dublin. Director Garry Hynes brings this thrilling and intriguing production of Nancy Harris’s new play to life with a talented cast. The story unfolds as a widow, who moves her life to an island off West Cork, is faced with many unanswered questions from a mysterious event in her past. Jane Brennan, Rae Gray, Cillian Ó Garibhí, Dan Monaghan and Marty Rea make up the carefully curated cast for Harris’s perplexing play. We caught up with the talented Cillian Ó Garibhí to hear more about his role and his experience working with Druid so far.
PAGE 34.
Coming a little later to the game, Cillian started out with a degree in Law before following his true calling. Setting out on his creative journey in the acting world, Cillian learned the ropes of his trade in the elite Gaiety Theatre, Dublin. Since graduation, he has worked on a plethora of productions from theatre to film/tv, most notably known for his roles in Vikings and Mo Ghrá Buan. Only two days into rehearsals, I could sense the excitement in Cillian’s voice as he described the experience of his Druid debut. Smitten with his role, Cillian describes the opportunity to work with such an established company as a dream come true. “To work with Druid has always been a dream of mine, especially to work under the guidance of Garry Hynes. Within a few minutes, you quickly realise the standard of analysis, experience and insight from the whole production...it’s definitely at a level I’ve never encountered before.”
Cillian plays the character of Donal, a relatable soul in many ways. Donal carries a trait we can all relate to from time to time, explains Cillian. “We all have a tendency to allow ourselves to be exposed to afflictive situations time and time again”. Fascinated with the intricacies of his character, Cillian highlights his admiration for Nancy’s ability to create and narrate these complex characters as the play evolves. “Nancy captures the layered interpersonal relationships between each character. The depth and complexity of the story and how the characters interact is just fascinating. As the play progresses, the characters and their complex bonds grow.” With a stellar cast, it’s no surprise Cillian is honoured to be part of such an enthralling production. Settling into rehearsals, he notes the importance of passion and commitment to the role. Being surrounded by like-minded people helps to evolve each of the characters. Taking inspiration from Garry, Nancy, and all of the Druid team, Cillian has naturally grown to articulate the character of Donal. Although I’ve caught up with Cillian right at the beginning of his first Druid production, I already get a sense of his enthusiasm and the passion for the craft, running through the entire ensemble of The Beacon. Each cast member has invested so much energy into their roles which drives the essence of the production. “Being in the company of people who have a shared sense of excitement for a collaborative project is just a wonderful experience… Already, I’ve started to learn from my peers at Druid about the craft; how to approach the script and really immerse yourself into the world of the character” Druid has a long-standing reputation for supporting new work from established and emerging playwrights and has played a major role in the careers of some of Ireland’s most talented playwrights. The Beacon continues Druid’s Year of New Writing following a sell-out run of Epiphany, a play by Brian Watkins at this year’s Galway International Arts Festival and the hugely successful national tour of Druid’s smash hit Furniture by Sonya Kelly. The play will run from 20th-28th Sept in the Town Hall Theatre, Galway before proceeding to the Gate Theatre, Dublin from 2nd-26th Oct. If you haven’t already booked your tickets for The Beacon, pop over to www.druid.ie. Don’t miss out on one of the most thrilling productions of the year with Druid. Saint Sister are an electro-folk duo that have emerged as one of the coolest, most talked about acts in the country due to their unique sound. Their music creates an atmosphere unlike any other; weaving the earthy, traditional notes of harp and other folk instruments with swelling, electronic undertones and angelic, kindred vocal harmonies. We spoke to one half of the pair, Gemma, in the lead up to a headline show in Róisín Dubh on September 21st... Saint Sister are about to embark on a national tour that encompasses pretty much every major venue in the country; from Kilkenny to Limerick and Galway to Drogheda, with a show in London added in for good measure. This latest tour is to promote their newly-released single, “Is It Too Early? (Kilmainham)”. The track opens with a jittery, stuttering voice asking if you are having fun, as the background noise and chatter intensifies in the background. The music grows and morphs into the noise of a techno party where one should certainly be having fun, but the same questions and doubts remain. It’s about missing home and being unsure about your decisions that lead you there.
Within 6 months of forming, Saint Sister supported Will Butler of Arcade Fire and recorded their “Madrid” EP with Alex Ryan, a band-mate of Irish superstar, Hozier. That first EP was streamed over 2 million times on Spotify and earned a playlist spot on major radio stations across the UK and Ireland. The success of “Madrid” and full-length album, “Shape of Silence”, enabled tours to be organised all across mainland Europe. Consistent touring has developed their live shows into a phenomenal exhibition of powerful noise juxtaposed with sweet voices. Since then they have appeared at Glastonbury, Electric Picnic and Latitude and supported the likes of The National and Lisa Hannigan. The new song exemplifies how far the project has come in just under five years. It was written partly on the east coast of Ireland and partly on the west coast of America as Saint Sister undertook a 50-date global tour to mark the release of their debut album last year. Gemma explains, “I lived in Kilmainham for a long time. While I was there I was working on arrangements and I’m not very good at naming demos so I just called it Kilmainham. I left if be for a while and eventually it resurfaced when I showed the song to Morgan while we were on tour. It clicked with her instantly and we started writing the lyrics while in the back of the van. It resonated with her and it became a piece about being away from home. While we are incredibly grateful to be able to tour as much as we do, we might not always be having the time of our lives as people think. That struck a chord with her. So I started it in Irelnd, then Morgan got her creative spark for it somewhere around San Francisco.” Although both members hail from Northern Ireland, Saint Sister began in Dublin when Gemma Doherty and Morgan McIntyre crossed paths in Trinity Orchestra. “We had loads of mutual friends. We knew a lot about each other and there seemed to be a lot of overlap in our lives. So I think we sensed a kinship in that way. It started off just us trying to make some music but then we got on so well, that really tied it all together. We clicked musically, and personally, very early on.”
PAGE 39.
The connection between the pair has resulted in a distinctive style with which they are now synonymous. But the project didn’t set out to be anything specific. “It kinda just happened. Initially we wanted to form a full band and had no idea what the line-up was going to be, we just had drums and bass in mind and maybe keys. Morgan had a few songs that we used as a way to try things out. That went on for a while but it was clear that it was just the two of us that had the real vision, so we stripped it all back. When it boiled down to just the harp and vocals we started to find our style. Because we had taken the drums and bass out of the equation it meant we had to experiment a bit more with drum machines and percussive effects on the harp. That’s when we brought it into the electronic world.” In many ways, however, Saint Sister are still discovering sounds and itching to explore new directions. “We decided not to put a label on our music at the very start so we could just see what happens. But, naturally, everybody starts to ask you what kind of music you play and you have to give an answer.” And so, we were gifted with: ‘Atmosfolk’ - coined by their recording artist, Alex Ryan. A bespoke genre all for themselves and one that fits pretty well. Gemma laughs and explains how that quirky name seemed to follow them around despite only ever using it a couple of times. “He threw that out and we thought it worked. We weren’t so keen to hang on to one particular term too much. But it stuck, so it must be fitting!
PAGE 40.
I don’t really mind what it’s called but I’d hate to focus too much on that tag and end up limiting our writing, or missing out on something because we feel we have to go a certain way. There are songs on The Shape of Silence and certainly some new stuff we are working on, that I wouldn’t class as folk. Folk is such a huge part of both of our backgrounds; I’ve always been into Irish Traditional folk music and Morgan is more into Americana. So it’s a huge influence but I wouldn’t call all of our music folks, just parts of it.” Saint Sister’s blend of genres is very suited to the modern Irish music scene; a scene which is diversifying but still keeps elements of what made it globally famous for many years. “All of our friends here are based around music and it does seem to be thriving. The variety is incredible. There are amazing people doing amazing things everywhere you look. There’s support for it now as well, people are buying tickets and going to gigs. That’s how these things happen, when local bands get backed.” It sounds like the right time to join the movement and support one of Ireland’s fastest-rising bands when they come to Róisín Dubh in Galway’s Westend. Saint Sister will be boasting a full four-piece band for the gig. The night will be opened by Rachael Lavelle. We’ll be there, it’s going to be a great show! Who are you and what do you do? My name is Elaine Mai and I’m an electronic producer, song-writer and singer. How would you describe your sound, for those who haven’t heard it? Emotive dance pop. We know it’s been a few years since you’ve lived in Galway, what’s the most thing you miss about the city? I miss so many things, Galway has a magic about it that’s hard to find elsewhere. One thing I really miss is the pea and potato madras from The Bean Tree in the market. I also miss being close to the sea and heading to parties that go on too long. If you’re down in Galway, where’s your go to spot for Breakfast? Ard Bia. Such a beautiful spot with great food and a warm welcome. Favourite spot for a drink in town? Tried The Universal for a pint a while back and loved it. Favourite spot to get away from it all? A drive out Barna direction with no destination in mind.
How did you get into music and remixing? I’ve been into music since I was young. I sang in a choir and played in bands in college. I got into remixing when I started to learn how to produce, it’s a great way to get you started producing. I initially remixed one of my own tracks and then released a remix of Daithí’s tune ‘Chameleon Life’. Remixing is super fun and I love that you can get totally lost in the process and reinvent a tune in a completely new way. Who are some of your main musical influences? Bjork, Robyn, Roy Orbison, Caribou, ABBA, Alanis, Chemical Brothers to name but a few! Have you any pre-gig rituals? More recently I’ve been trying to get away for a few mins to settle myself. It can be really daunting if you’re in the crowd watching the stage, or waiting side of stage to go on. So taking a few minutes to collect myself and take some deep breaths helps. What has been the highlight of your career so far? There are so many, but one that stands out is having my remix of Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game’ named track of Electric Picnic 2017 by The Irish Times. You released some new music recently, do you want to tell us about the release and your collaboration with Pillow Queens? I’m a huge fan of Pillow Queens and I wanted to work with the gals for a while. I loved ‘Gay Girls’ from the first time I heard it, such a brilliant song. I knew I wanted to do something different with it and move away from the original. There are all these gorgeous nuggets in the vocal stems that are super catchy, but also show real vulnerability. The line, ‘roots for you’ and the main vocal cut I highlighted in the chorus are absolute gems, so they formed a large part of the remix. It was a brilliant project to work on and I’m delighted with how it turned out.
