ABOUT THE IDEA PLAY SAFARIS WHO I MET TOKYO & TRENDS!
OUR PROBLEM + MY IDEA
#PLAYFINDERS: solves two problems: 1. Because people forget to share and games get lost! #PLAYCOLLECTED stores our memories of Play, and pass on games (rulebooks, images, videos, sounds, memories, etc) from generation to generation
Connection, Curation and Inspiration‌ 2. People don’t know what traditional games are played around the world! Knowing what games children play in Brazil, South Africa or Russia etc will inspire children to get outside, learn & understand other cultures
WHAT’S MY IDEA?
#PLAYFINDERS – in a nutshell An interactive crowdsourced map of different types of traditional play from the past - and around the world. Ensuring children learn new games, become accepting of other cultures, & we have a growing user-generated play archive
playcollected:
collecting & connecting games and play culture
What could #PLAYCOLLECTED look like..?
How does #PLAYFINDERS work..? Users make a profile and then pin their own games (pictures, videos & rulebooks etc to a digi map). Children rewarded for trying traditional games from around the world, parents / educators are rewarded for uploading
THINKING AROUND THE PROBLEMS
So, it was meant to be about “offline” right? Yes, this is about parents and educators going online to discover, learn and get inspired. Because of this, children then spend more time offline and playing games – either from their past, or from around the world
A word on safety Children can access the site to create a profile and explore – but there is no way to interact. The site will be moderated while its in Beta, but will essentially become self-moderated (like TripAdvisor or Wikiepedia)
If you build it‌ There are several approaches to building PlayCollected. It could be Wiki-style open source software, with a designed front end. Or it could be a bespoke platform, that looks a little like Pinterest. Or a combination of the two‌
One of the challenges With any open-source / UGC project, one of the challenges is kick-starting the interest and activity on the site. PLAYFINDERS will work with British Council networks to spark interest, offer prizes for the first entrants and be backed by a PR campaign that tells the human story of the different games
Why repeat visits? There’s a constantly updated and growing database of play, making it the #1 hub for Play inspiration. It is gamified, with awards and prizes for A) adding play and B) trying new types of Play. And crucially, much like Wikipedia or TripAdvisor – parents become respected members of the PLAYFINDERS community, winning badges and prizes the more they do in the community – the most engaged becoming WikiPlay masters
The #PLAYFINDERS fundamentals The games uploaded have to be suitable for 0 to 8-year-olds, they have to be easy to play, and cheap-to-do. Rewards, points and prizes are offered for taking part: giving-it-a-go is the ultimate route to winning #PLAYCOLLECTED
WORKING TOGETHER
Working with partners Universities: might want to use PlayCollected, to educate and inspire a new generation of teachers Commercial partners: toy manufacturers and retailers might want to support. Perhaps they might want to supply a starter toolkit, with all the basic building blocks / materials Institutions: Like the V&A, Museum of Childhood and international equivalents might want to support – showcasing their knowledge, expertise and increasing traffic
And why? PlayCollected is an open-source book of knowledge, with useful real world applications. It also becomes an international hub, driving traffic from around the world
Frequently asked questions In a nutshell? It’s a Wikipedia for types of play Will it be moderated? The Beta site is moderated, then it becomes selfregulating as the community is built up What types of games? There will be a rule-book, outlining which games fit the traditional / non-digital framework. i.e. limiting the tools, equipment, numbers environment needed Is it out there already? I don’t think so! Although want to find out What next? A wireframe/blueprint for the site, a user journey, start collecting play offline, work out a name, define the paremeters
More on the legacy idea..? The growing legacy piece could be themed around news agendas and anniversaries. e.g. what games did people play around the Queen’s Coronation, the Millenium, WWII etc – using Play as a storytelling medium
AND IN SUMMARY
The #PLAYCOLLECTED outcomes Children engage, interact & celebrate the best types of outdoor play from the past. We learn about types of play from around the world. And create a legacy - an archive of the best games and play with rewards for participating
