While the feature forecasts today’s youth may not identify antiquated items used; it exemplifies the value in this unique opportunity to explore harvest history here in the Pocono Mountains.

Electric Refrigeration Causes Decline of Ice Industry in Poconos *Wilkes Barre Independent Newspaper circa May 30, 1937

The “electric ice box” has been pushing ice further and further into the limbo of forgotten things. Just as the advent of the automobile supplemented the horse and helped put the miller out of business, so has the electric refrigerator put blocks of ice on an endless toboggan. Albert Sansanbach, the superintendent of operations at Pocono Lake recalls with misty eyes the days when ice and lumber were indeed kings of the Poconos. Those of us who lived in the days of ice, who were proud to own an icebox from which a few chips could be obtained on a warm summer night to cool a glass of homemade root beer, will regret to see the passing of a commodity that is a link in the chain of life of other days. The modern child will probably not recognize a pair of ice tongs any more that he will a horse’s curry comb. Check Ice Harvest status to ensure ice depth is adequate on their Hotline 570.894.8205
