Trout Season Begins! Earth Day

On!

Gather your friends, family and fishing poles and head for the Pocono waterways! The 2013 Pennsylvania Trout Fishing Season officially begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 13! The Pocono Mountains Region of Pennsylvania is known for excellent coldwater trout fishing. Healthy populations of rainbow, brook and brown trout flourish in local waters, and abundant public fishing holes are easily accessed by car or scenic hike. Through Labor Day weekend, anglers can catch and keep up to five fish per creel from Pennsylvania’s inland waters; trout must measure at least seven inches in length to be kept. In the Commonwealth, anglers age 16 and older are required to possess a fishing license and trout stamp. One, three, and seven-day fishing licenses are available for Pennsylvania visitors. Fishing licenses, bait and equipment can be found at many locallyowned shops across the Poconos. Woehrle’s Bait Shop in Mount Pocono offers an outstanding selection of live fishing bait; Hunter’s Gallery features rods, reels, creels and lures; Tannery Depot showcases great bait and tackle, and Blakeslee Sport Shop sells locally-tied flies, fishing licenses, live bait and topographical maps. Behold Boulder Field! Boulder Field, located in Hickory Run State Park, is a National Natural Landmark and a true scenic wonder. The vast “field” of stone is a fossil and a relict, its contents left behind after the last ice advance. Hickory Run’s Boulder Field is a potpourri of loosely-packed boulders which range in size from a few inches to 25’ in length. flat fi eld measures 400’ wide wide, 1 1,800’ th The surprisingly flat field 800’ long and about 10’ deep. The boulders are predominantly red sandstone, and trend from angular shapes in the east side of the field to more rounded shapes in the west. About 15,000 years ago, such rocky terrain was common throughout the Northeast, but gradual weathering and climate change have led to the coverage or elimination of many boulder fields. Only in special places, such as Hickory Run State Park, do these astounding formations remain. Hickory Run State Park is located in Carbon County at the foothills of the Pocono Mountains. Boulder Field is easily accessible via Boulder Field Road or the scenic Boulder Field hiking trail. Celebrate spring renewal at the Waverly Community House! The picturesque Pennsylvania destination will host the 21st Annual House and Garden Show on Saturday and Sunday, April 27 and 28. With displays featuring everything from furniture to fine jewelry, there’s sure to be something for everyone! There will be a Berry Seedling Sale in the Spring Hearth Booth, a Children’s Gardening Workshop sponsored by Beichler’s Greenhouse, and a gift basket raffle featuring prizes from local businesses. Show guests will enjoy delicious organic cuisine from Be Life Café and delectable desserts made by local bakers. The eclectic work of artists Dawn Edinger Linden and Steve Linden, featured in the Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum Collection, will be on display for the festival. After the reception, artist Steve Linden will host a “Hot Glue Luau,” an interactive event during which participants will create an original work of art in a cocktail party environment. The Monroe County Historical Association (MCHA) will present the 21st Annual Victorian Tea and Luncheon on Sunday, April 28 at the e Chateau Resort and Conference Center tter in i Tannersville. T ill 3 - 2013: Remembering This year’s program is titled 1863 Gettysburg, 150 Years Ago in Fashion and History. The entertaining affair will begin with a social hour at 1 p.m., and feature a living history presentation by members of the 142nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company G. Members of the local organization will discuss Monroe County Civil War veterans, and what life was like for families on the home front. Dressed in period attire, the re-enactors will also explore the wonderful fashions of the Civil War era. Guests are encouraged to join the fun and attend in vintage attire. Luncheon seating will take place at 1:30 p.m., and service will begin at 2. Tickets cost $30 for MCHA members and $35 for the public. Reservations with payment should be made at the MCHA office on Main Street in Stroudsburg before Saturday, April 20.
