Bushkill Falls, the Niagara of Pennsylvania Since 1904 when Charles E. Peters realized his dream, Bushkill Falls, and charged just 10¢/person on opening day, visitors can imagine how it was when the Leni Lenape inhabited the area! Step into the lifesize longhouse in the Native American exhibit, look up through the smoke hole, and visualize cooking and sleeping there. The displays of utensils and hunting equipment are a reminder that meals involved more than a simple trip to the grocery store or fast food franchise. Bushkill Falls is a very do-able day trip. “It’s much easier to get to Bushkill Falls today than it was in 1917,” comments General Manager Donna Smith. “We pride ourselves in maintaining Mr. Peters’ dream. It’s a piece of history that can never be replaced.” Enjoy walking trails with well-constructed stairs and bridges; challenge the Red Trail, a 2mile hike around all 8 waterfalls! Free parking and picnic area with grills add to the affordable appeal. An open-air pavilion can be rented for events! You’ll find a playground, paddleboats, miniature golf, fishing, Native American and Wildlife exhibits, Fudge Kitchen, snack bar, and gift and souvenir shops. Just off Route 209 in Bushkill, Bushkill Falls opens daily at 9:00am; admission includes entrance to all exhibits. See the calendar of events, directions, and nearby accommodations at www.visitbushkillfalls.com, or call (570) 588-6682.

If you need an accommodation to participate in a park activity due to a disability, contact the Pennsylvania Bureau of State Parks at 1-888-PA-PARKS (voice), 1-888-537-7294 (TTY), or 711 (AT&T Relay Services). Promised Land has Turtle Basking Platforms Promised Land State Park announces that Eagle Scout candidate Eric Mantz has installed 4 turtle basking platforms; 2 in Promised Land Lake, and 2 in Lower Lake. Reptiles use the environment to regulate their body temperature, and the platforms serve as a necessary base for aquatic turtles to bask in the sun. Painted Turtles bask upon dead logs, but logs don’t offer enough room, causing the turtles to fight. The new platforms not only offer a larger basking surface, they also allow boaters to view turtles up close, and help park staff to monitor the number of Painted Turtles as well as invasive, non-native Red-Eared Sliders. The platforms are made of Hemlock, and PVC pipe attached to the base provides buoyancy. Each platform is anchored by 2 cinder blocks Eric Mantz installs a turtle basking via a 10’ wire. They are PA Fish & Boat Commission approved, and are platform on a chilly early April weekend permanent fixtures. Park staff is grateful to Eric Mantz, who spent 50+ hours working with his Scout Troop and his family to build and install the platforms. A plaque, mounted at the Wildlife Observation Station at Bear Wallow, commemorates the project. Turtle basking platform plans are available from the park. Those interested in conducting an Eagle Scout project or a Gold Award project at Promised Land State Park may contact Carissa Longo at (570) 676-0567 or PromisedLandEnvEdsp@state.pa.us. Bask at www.visitPAparks.com.

In Pursuit of Amphibians at Varden Go In Pursuit of Amphibians on Wednesday, May 11th at the Varden Conservation Area on Route 296 in Wayne County, within the Promised Land State Park Complex. Join Environmental Education Specialist Carissa Longo from 5:30pm to 7:30pm on a hunt for frogs, toads, and salamanders around beautiful, abundant wetlands within the Conservation Area. Sight a spotted salamander, find eggs, and maybe discover fairy shrimp! You’ll use your listening ears, too; the program begins under the pavilion, with an introduction to amphibian identification and frog calls. Dress to get muddy, and wear waders/water shoes if you have them. Families are welcome; registration is requested. Meet at the Tannery Access. For more information or to register, call (570) 676-0567 or (570) 676-3428, email PromisedLandEnvEdSp@state.pa.us, visit the Promised Land State Park office, or view www.visitpaparks.com.

Grey Towers Heritage Helps Re-Plant National Forests Collaborating with the National Forest Foundation Tree For Me planting program, the Grey Towers Heritage Association (GTHA) has used member donations to revitalize forested landscapes damaged by wildfire, helping to plant 32 trees on National Forests last year! “We feel this is an appropriate and long-lasting use of a small portion of our donors’ funds,” said Barbara Buchanan, President of the GTHA. “Gifford Pinchot was the first chief of the US Forest Service and he and President Theodore Roosevelt established the National Forests. Today we are helping to perpetuate his legacy in so many different ways, including planting trees.” Grey Towers is the ancestral home of Gifford Pinchot, who also was Governor of Pennsylvania. The GTHA mission is to carry forward the Pinchot legacy through programs and projects at Grey Towers. The National Forest Foundation Tree For Me program cultivates countless benefits for public national forests. While restoring burned and otherwise damaged forest landscapes, planting trees rebuilds healthy wildlife habitat, protects critical watersheds, enhances recreation experiences, and helps address global warming. Learn how to support the GTHA and its programs at www.greytowers.org, or call (570) 296-9625.

Pocono Mountain Birdathon

The Monroe County Conservation District (MCCD) Environmental Education Center announces Pocono Mountain Birdathon! Birding is one of the most popular activities in the world among outdoor enthusiasts. Surveys conducted by the National Park Service, Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and outdoor equipment vendors indicate that birding is also one of the fastest-growing outdoor activities in the nation. Combine your love of birds and birding with a good old fashioned marathon fundraiser. Collect sponsors to pledge a dime, quarter, or dollar for each species of bird you see from 7:00pm on Saturday, May 14th to 7:00pm on Sunday, May 15th. Then, join other birders at MCCD in Bartonsville for refreshments, sharing stories of birds seen and unseen. Prizes will be awarded for the most species seen and the most funds raised! If you want to participate but aren’t confident in your birding ability, MCCD will partner you with an experienced birder. You’ll be provided with a checklist of birds and a pledge sheet. From I-80 exit 302 or 302B, go north on Route 611, travel ½ mile to the 2nd traffic light in Bartonsville, turn left onto Rimrock Drive for 0.4 mile, bear right onto N. Easton-Belmont Pike for 0.2 mile, then bear right onto Running Valley Road; MCCD is 0.7 mile on the left. Call (570) 629-3061, email monroecd@ptd.net, or go to www.mcconservation.org.
