Shawnee Mountain’s Celtic Festival channels the soul and sounds of the Emerald Isle. Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm frolics with newborn baby animals. The ancient Celts, according to lore, were a powerful people—druids and bards who philosophized about the soul’s immortality and firmly believed in magic. During the Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, Shawnee Mountain celebrates some of that magic with its annual Celtic Festival. Featuring nonstop Celtic music on three stages, Festival highlights include over 30 Celtic craft and food vendors, a bagpipers’ parade, Celtic jam, working sheep dogs and Irish step dancers. Musical acts include veteran musicians from England, Northern Ireland and the US, a Canadian Celtic-Rock band, the straight-from-Ireland Irish Lads and more. Burning Bridget Cleary, one of the hottest young acts on the Celtic and folk music circuits, hailed as “the Allman Brothers of Celtic fiddle bands, only prettier,” will also perform. Children’s events include Celtic Wizards magic shows, Leprechaun juggler, water balloon tosses, face painting and Celtic farm animal petting zoo. Performances and events occur throughout both days of the festival. The Celtic Festival takes place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Shawnee Mountain, PA Exit 309, I-80, Hollow Road, Shawneeon-Delaware. Steamtown’s Train Journey to the Past Commemorating Memorial Day, historic diesel locomotives will journey from Steamtown National Historic Site in downtown Scranton to the beautiful borough of East Stroudsburg, nestled in the valley of the Pocono Mountains’ Broadhead Creek, for a celebration in Miller Park.

Historic Dansbury Depot

Passengers arriving from Scranton to East Stroudsburg will be able to tour the historic depot, which dates back to 1864, buy snacks and coffee in the unique station cafe and explore artifacts and images documenting the station’s history. Miller Park, situated just off the tracks behind the depot, will host Memorial Day festivities, including live music and entertainment, railroad memorabilia, tours of the historic switch tower, an antique auto display, military equipment and lots more family friendly activities. The excursion will depart Steamtown at 9 a.m. and arrive in East Stroudsburg at approximately 11:15 a.m. After a two-hour layover with time to celebrate in Miller Park, the train will return to Scranton with an expected arrival time of 3:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $54 for adults 16 to 61 years old, $49 for ages 62 and older and $32 for children six to 15. Children to age five are free with a paying adult. Reservations are required: (570) 340-5204 or (888) 693-9391. On June 9, in honor of the Civil War’s 150th Anniversary, Steamtown will sponsor a train excursion featuring Civil War figures. This reenactment honors the fact that the Civl War was the first war in which railroads were a major factor. President Lincoln often traveled by train, and this journey will be no exception. President Lincoln, portrayed by nationally recognized living historian Jim Getty, and some of his famous generals will mingle with passengers who can take photos and ask questions. Mr. Getty, viewed by many as the best and most accurate Lincoln re-enactor, will deliver several inspirational speeches. Musicians of the Confederation of Union Generals will also provide period musical entertainment during the trip. This special excursion departs Steamtown at 10 a.m. with stops at Carbondale Station and Jessup Station. Passengers will hear Getty deliver Lincoln’s famous speech “on the need to preserve the Union.” For more information on this historical excursion: (570) 340-5200.

BioBlitz 2012 A BioBlitz is a 24-hour event in which teams of volunteer scientists, nature lovers, families and other community members work together, finding and identifying as many species of plants, animals and other organisms as possible. It’s a fun and exciting way for kids and adults to participate in an important research expedition and learn about the biological diversity of an area. The Monroe County Environment Slimy Salamander by Jeff Strunk Education Center (MCEEC) sponsors its annual BioBlitz from Friday, June 15, 3 p.m. until Saturday, June 16, 3 p.m. Area scientists from local universities will lead the community in a race to count the species of plants and animals that live on the Josie Porter Farm Open Space Preserve in Stroud Township. Quiet Valley’s FARM ANIMAL FROLIC Farm Animal Frolic, hosted by Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm on May 26 and 27, gives kids of all ages the opportunity to see and touch baby farm animals. Watch chicks hatching from their eggs, feel the velvety fur of baby bunnies. Cuddle new lambs, thick with soft, woolly fleece, watch frisky baby goats play. You’ll see adorable piglets, cows and Clydesdale workhorses. Farm Animal Frolic also features pony rides, great country food and a hay jump. On May 26th, you can watch sheep shearing. Tour a historical one-room schoolhouse on May 27th. Besides being fun, Farm Animal Frolic helps children understand and appreciate human beings’ reliance on animals. Children who interact with baby animals in their natural environment may grow up to behave more humanely towards animals that give their lives to feed and sustain humans. As a National Historical Site, Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm preserves an important piece of Pennsylvania’s agricultural heritage. Reenacting the lives of the German family who lived and worked the farm from the 1760s to 1913, Quiet Valley is a journey to yesteryear when family farms fed the nation. Farm Animal Frolic takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday the 26th and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday the 27th. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for children.
