Tobyhanna Army Depot Centennial On June 23, the Tobyhanna Army Depot celebrates its 100th Anniversary. The festivities, which run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., feature family-friendly activities, including a children’s carnival, wall climbing, live music, car show, historic military equipment and Humvee rides. The amazing U.S. Army Parachute Team “Golden Knights” will perform a special parachute demonstration at 1:30 p.m. Scranton’s Steamtown National Historic Site will run a special train from Steamtown to the Tobyhanna Train Station at 9 a.m. The Landing, the Army Depot’s restaurant, will offer a specially priced buffet for Steamtown passengers. Other special events that day include guided tours of the Depot’s mission area. To enter the installation, visitors over age 16 must have photo identification. Summer Solstice: June 20th Summer solstice, the first day of the season, is the longest day of the year. The word solstice is a combination of the Latin words sol, which means sun, and stece, which means to stand still. As the days start to lengthen, the sun rises higher and higher, until it seems to stand still in the sky. Shakespeare referred to summer solstice as midsummer. APPALACHIAN TRAIL

Winding 2,178 miles through 14 states, from the summit of Maine’s Mount Katahdin to the top of Springer Mountain in Georgia, the Appalachian National Scenic Trail is the longest footpath in the U.S. With a highest point of 6,625 feet in Tennessee and a nadir of 124 feet in New York, the Trail ranges from deep forested wilderness to strenuous mountain hiking above the tree line and rambles through quintessential American towns. The Appalachian Trail attracts thousands of hikers each year, many of whom set out with a goal of traveling the entire route. Eighty percent fail. A mere 500 or so hikers are able to complete the arduous trek, which takes between five and seven months. As a pilgrimage, the Appalachian Trail has no American rival. Dozens of books about nature, fellowship and self-discovery have been written by those who trekked the entire Trail. As the Appalachian Trail blazes through the Pocono Mountains, it creates some of the most spectacular sights in Pennsylvania, including the Delaware Water Gap. Geologically, the Water Gap, which lies on the border between Pennsylvania and New Jersey, is the point where the Delaware River cuts through a large ridge of the Appalachians. Part of the National Parks system, the Water Gap offers outdoor enthusiasts a wide range of activities, including rafting, swimming, fishing, bird watching, camping, horseback riding and rock climbing, and also the comfort and culture of nearby towns.

THE TOWN A haven for artists, musicians and writers, the town of Delaware Water Gap is graced with quaint bed and breakfasts and country inns. Founders Day is celebrated on June 30 and each September the town hosts Celebration of the Arts, which brings together musicians, dancers, poets and filmmakers for a three-day artistic feast. Year-round, internationally-renowned jazz musicians perform at the Deer Head Inn on Main Street, the country’s oldest jazz club.

DELAWARE WATER GAP TROLLEY For non-hikers, a ride on the Delaware Water Gap Trolley is the best way to see the region. You can relax while traveling to local points of interest within the Water Gap area. Sites you’ll visit include Shawnee-on-Delaware, Resort Point Overlook, Point of the Gap, Cold Air Cave, the Appalachian Trail, Dutot Museum, Old Stone House, Castle Inn, Historic Shawnee Church and celebrity homes.
