Civil War Road Show and Wheat Weaving Programs at Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm hosts the Pennsylvania Civil War Road Show from Friday through Sunday, June 24th through 26th, 10:00am to 5:00pm. Through interactive features, the free traveling exhibition tells fascinating stories of Pennsylvanians during the Civil War. An initiative of Pennsylvania Civil War 150, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the show will visit all 67 counties in the commonwealth over 4 years; Quiet Valley is host for Monroe County. A 142nd PA Volunteer Regiment Company G re-enactors’ encampment, Civil War medicine, recipes of the Civil War, open farm buildings, school house programs, agriculture, genealogy, and children’s activities are featured in addition to the road show. On Tuesday, June 28th, Karen Wood will demonstrate Wheat Weaving as a Summer Highlights Program. The craft of wheat weaving is centuries old, practiced in grain-growing countries worldwide, and an element in rituals believed to ensure fruitful harvests. Early American settlers employed wheat weaving as it is used today, creating functional and decorative folk art. This program, from 10:30am to 3:30pm, is in addition to the regular tour. Non-profit Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm is a restored and working 19th century farm, complete with guides dressed in period clothing, just 3½ miles south of Stroudsburg off Business Route 209. Environmental Educator Brian Hardiman continues his summer hike series in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area with this exploration of Van Campen’s Glen, a hemlock dominated ravine through which the pristine and sparkling Van Campen’s Brook

flows. This 4-mile hike will first traverse the chestnut oak/pitch pine forest of Hamilton Ridge before dropping down into the glen. Meet at 8:30am at the MCEEC and return at 5:00pm. Participants should pack a lunch and plenty of water, and need to be physically fit for hiking distances over sometimes rocky and uneven terrain. The cost is $20 and includes van transportation. Quiet Valley is hosting the Civil War Road Show for Monroe County. The Pennsylvania Civil War Road Show is free and open to the general public. The Forest Service at Grey Towers offers public programs that illustrate the significance of this era and the role that the Pinchot family and Grey Towers played in conservation in America. In addition to the introduction to forestry history, the program will address some of today’s forest management challenges, such as invasive species, deer overpopulation and insect infestations. Participants should dress for the weather and wear appropriate shoes for steep and uneven terrain. Regular tour fees apply. Grey Towers is the former home of eminent conservationist and former Pennsylvania Governor Gifford Pinchot. Today the US Forest Service, which was founded by Pinchot, is the steward of the

Hike up Glen Onoko Falls with the Pocono Outdoor Club Join members of the Pocono Outdoor Club on a Hike up Glen Onoko Falls in Carbon County at 10:00am on Sunday, July 26th. This 2- to 3-mile hike ascends along a series of waterfalls, and traverses back down. Glen Onoko Falls begins as a mountain spring, offering a 55-degree water temperature even in summer. Spring water gushing from the mountaintop forms a stream that varies between 10 and 20 feet in width. Water surges down the mountain, cascading over several waterfalls, with the longest drop around 75 feet. Glen Onoko is a truly memorable hike! Pieces in the museum spaces of the mansion date from the 7th or 8th century to the 20th century and illustrate the lifestyles of several different generations who lived in the home. Reservations for the Artifact Tour are recommended and space is limited. Regular tour fees apply. Grey Towers is the former home of eminent conservationist and former Pennsylvania Governor Gifford Pinchot. Today the US Forest Service, which was founded by Pinchot, is the steward of the home, offering public programs, tours, and a conference center for environmental programs. To find Grey Towers from Route 6 near Milford, turn onto Old Owego Turnpike (near the Apple Valley Shops Complex) and travel about ¼ mile to the entrance on the left. July 4 – A long-standing tradition and one of the most spectacular fireworks shows of the summer, the Pocono Lake Region Chamber of Commerce’s annual INDEPENDENCE DAY FIREWORKS DISPLAY will be launched over Lake Wallenpaupack in the Northern Poconos. Fired from the shores of the lake adjacent to the Wallenpaupack Area High School in Hawley, the fireworks display is free and open to the public. Spectators begin congregating at vantage points along the northernmost end of the lake in early evening for the fireworks show, which starts at around 9:15 (dusk). There will also be some prefireworks events and entertainment. Although the display may be seen from various locations around the lake (or on the lake, as the flotilla of boats every year can attest) some of the most convenient parking (and seating) is made available courtesy of the Wallenpaupack Area School District. Parking is available at the High School’s large lots on Route

6 and there is ample seating at the school’s stadium (and lawns for those who prefer lawn chairs and blankets). The bleachers at the school stadium open to spectators at 7:00pm. July 4 – Go on a 4th of July Fireworks Cruise on Lake Wallenpaupack from 8:00 to 10:00pm with Wallenpaupack Scenic Boat Tour. During the first hour of the cruise, passengers will see points of interest on the lake, learn a little area history and get into the 4th of July spirit. During the second hour, you’ll have a lakeside seat for the spectacular fireworks display shot over the lake at Hawley. Book this cruise early, because seats fill up fast! Wallenpaupack Scenic Boat Tour is located at 2487 Route 6 in Hawley, close to the intersection of Route 6 and Route 507.
