Festival of Wonder The Audubon Art & Craft Festival, July 21 and 22, celebrates wildlife arts and natural wonders. Both educational and fun, the festival is a great way to learn about and experience firsthand many of nature’s mysteries. See closeup a wide variety of animals, including skunks, bats, snakes, raccoons, raptors and more, handled by wildlife experts. You’ll have the opportunity to touch some of the animals. Presentations will answer your questions about wild animals. This is a great way for children to explore their curiosity and develop an appreciation for animals. Over 20 of the nation’s most acclaimed wildlife and nature artists will be exhibiting and selling their works, which include photography, acrylic and oil painting, serigraphy and watercolor. Crafts that will be available include jewelry, clothing, pottery, woodcarving, quilting, metalwork, leatherwork and furniture. The festival is sponsored by the Northeast Pennsylvania Audubon Society. Come out and see the exhibits, learn about conservation and enjoy delicious homemade food. The festival takes place at Wallenpaupack High School in Hawley, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Never leave your pet in a car unattended during the warmer months. Dogs left outside should have plenty of shade and a dependable source of cool water. Remember pets are susceptible to sunburn and skin cancer, especially light-colored or sparsely-coated animals. The nose and tips of the ears are especially prone. Apply non-toxic sunscreen. Beware of snakebites when exploring the outdoors with your pet. Take precautions for your pet, and examine your pet's skin and fur regularly for ticks. Make sure all pets wear collars with identification.

History Founded in 1818 as Mauch Chunk, Jim Thorpe took on the name of one of the greatest athletes of all time when his widow sought a place to memorialize him after his native Oklahoma failed to do so. For Music Lovers Jim Thorpe boasts two great venues for live music. A historic 1882 Vaudeville theater, Mauch Chunk Opera House features acoustics that rival those of Carnegie Hall. Penn’s Peak presents national touring bands and offers luxury boxes and a restaurant.

Trivia Jim Thorpe’s Harry Packer Mansion is now a bed and breakfast, and was used as the model for Walt Disney World’s Haunted Mansion in Orlando. Sitting atop a hill overlooking downtown Jim Thorpe, its next door neighbor, the Asa Packer Mansion, is now a museum. Asa Packer founded the Lehigh Valley Railroad and Lehigh University, and was Harry’s father.

Sporting 20 trailheads right in the center of town, cyclists and hikers alike are drawn to Gorge Trail, which loops 19 miles past waterfalls and steep canyon walls. Mauch Chunk Lake Park features water sports, including boating, swimming and fishing. The park is also home to a variety of wildlife. eckley salutes u.s. troops A former anthrac anthracite mining community that is now a living historical museum, Eckley Miners’ Village is paying tribute to those Americans who most deserve our nation’s gratitude. On July 14 and 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Eckley is hosting its Armed Forces Tribute Weekend. Shawnee’s Wurst Festival Experience the best of the wurst at Shawnee Mountain Ski Area’s 4th Annual Poconos’ Wurst Festival on July 14 and 15. Brews, brats and music make for the epitome of a summer celebration. Featuring Polish and German themes, the event will spread out over three stages of music. Highlights include traditional costumed dance performances, races, ethnic craft vendors, and plenty of wursts, wieners, kielbasa, pierogies and cold brews.
