Art & Craft Festival The Audubon Art & Craft Festival, July 21 and 22, celebrates wildlife arts and natural wonders. Both educational and fun, the festival is a great way to learn about and experience firsthand many of nature’s mysteries. Get a close up view of a wide variety of animals, including skunks, bats, snakes, raccoons, raptors and more, handled by wildlife experts. You’ll have the opportunity to interact with some of the animals. Presentations will answer your questions about wild animals. This is a great way for children to explore their curiosity and develop an appreciation for animals. Over 20 of the nation’s most acclaimed wildlife and nature artists will be exhibiting and selling their works, which include photography, acrylic and oil painting, serigraphy and watercolor. Crafts that will be available include jewelry, clothing, pottery, woodcarving, quilting, metalwork, leatherwork and furniture. The festival is sponsored by the Northeast Pennsylvania Audubon Society. Come out and see the exhibits, learn about conservation and enjoy delicious homemade food. The festival takes place at Wallenpaupack High School in Hawley, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Music fills the air, day and night, in the Pocono Mountains during summer. This week, enjoy a variety of rock, jazz and blues at beautiful Pocono Mountains venues. The Steve Chapin Band plays the Wildflower Music Festival in the natural outdoor amphitheater of the Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary in White Mills on Saturday night. Hiking the Poconos “In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.” —John Muirr With hundreds of miles of trails that wind past waterfalls, through dense forests, around glacial lakes and up steep slopes, the Pocono Mountains take hiking to scenic heights. Blazing across the southern Mountains, the Appalachian Trail is perhaps the country’s most iconic hike. Boulder Field, in Hickory Run State, tells the story of the Wisconsin Glacial Period. 15,000 years ago, the Laurentide Continental Glacier began moving south out of the arctic, reaching its lowest point in what became Hickory Run State Park and leaving behind a tundra landscape when most of the soil washed away. Remaining are rocks and the shattered top layer of bedrock. The result is Boulder Field.

Here are four additional trails for blazing your path through the Pocono Mountains: Christened “The Niagara of Pennsylvania,” Bushkill Falls features eight waterfalls cascading over the primeval rocks and slate walls that form the uplands of the Pocono Mountains. As one of Pennsylvania’s most beautiful and dramatic natural sights, Bushkill Falls makes an ideal daytrip for hikers. Two streams flowing down the mountainside feed the eight waterfalls. Trails and bridges wind through the area—affording incredible views of the falls—into a lush, emerald green forest. When you go: Take I-80 to exit 309, Route 209 North. Turn left onto Bushkill Falls Road at the blinking light in Bushkill. For more information: (570) 588-6682, www.visitbushkillfalls.com.

Austin T. Blakeslee Natural Area is approximately 130 acres of protected land featuring waterfalls that create deep pools of water bordered by rock strewn banks. Walk along the Creek Trail to the lookout for an awesome view of the falls. When you go: Route 115, between Take I-80 to exit 284, Route 115. For more information: www.tobyhannatwphistory.org.

The rugged terrain of Gouldsboro State Park, which features a lake and a rail line that divides Gouldsboro from neighboring Tobyhanna State Park, makes for a challenging, invigorating hike. Several very rocky sections on the 5.8-mile Prospect Rock Trail will keep you on your toes. When you go: Take I-380 to exit 13 unto PA-507. Located within the Delaware Water Gap Recreational Area, Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC) offers six trails for every fitness level. Ridgeline Trail: Allow three hours to hike this 4.5-mile trail. It is blazed in yellow and begins at the forest edge off of the front parking lot behind Cabin #1. The trail wanders through expansive oak-hickory forests, shady hemlock ravines and around numerous vernal wetlands. The terrain is hilly, and in one section where the trail courses over a rock ledge, additional care should be taken. This trail begins and ends along with the red blazed Scenic Gorge trail behind Cabin #20. Follow PEEC’s campus road back to the main building. When you go: Take I-80 W to exit 309N for Marshalls Creek/Route 209. Follow Route 209 for approximately 3 miles and make a right turn at the light in Marshalls Creek. Continue North on Route 209 for 14 miles. You will see two signs for PEEC between mile markers 8 & 9 on Route 209. The first sign is one-half-mile before the left turn; the second is directly across from the turn. Turn left onto Brisco Mountain Road. When the road forks, bear right at the stop sign; PEEC will be on your right.

Arts Festival in Beautiful Buck Hill “Love of beauty is taste. Classical Music, Opera & Jazz Take Center Stage The Buck Hill-Skytop Music Festival, which this year runs from July 21 through August 4, debuted in 2010 as a means of bringing a classical music cultural and educational institution to the Pocono Mountains region. International conductor, opera coach and master class teacher Peter Mark acts as Artistic Director. New to the festival this year, Phil Chan, who has performed with the Ballet Theater of Dover, Westchester Ballet, Ballet Americana and Canadian Ballet Theatre, is serving as general manager. Venues for the festival, which features multiple programs during each day and night of its run, include Tennis Tea in Buck Hill Falls, Skytop Lodge and Notre Dame High School in East Stroudsburg, which hosts the inaugural event on July 21—a Student to Star dance contest, featuring students from leading dance schools in Pennsylvania, and a pre-show talk with Phil Chan at 4:30 p.m. New York City Ballet Principal Ashley Bouder has put together a George Balanchine program which will be performed at Notre Dame High School on July 22 at 7 p.m. July 24 features a chamber music concert at Tennis Tea at 8 p.m. On July 25, chamber music will be performed at Skytop Lodge at 8 p.m. Opera master classes by Peter Mark will be offered as will performances of La Traviata.
