Eckley Hosts Living History Weekend

Experience the sights and sounds of the 1860s at Eckley Miners’ Village! The historic mining patch town will host a Living History and Civil War Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, August 17 and 18. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Eckley’s streets and structures will bustle with activity as period-dressed re-enactors stage skirmishes, encampments, craft demonstrations and more! Performances, including the Eckley Players’ interpretation of The Ballad of Patrick Sweeney, will abound throughout the weekend. Entertainers Dave Matsinko & Kent Courtney will perform period music, and Helen Torok will sing and explain the meanings of old slave songs. All of Eckley’s historic buildings will be open and staffed with interpreters on both days of the event, and concessions will be available. This year’s Living History and Civil War Weekend will be held rain or shine. Admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and $6 for children under age 13. For additional information, call (570) 636-2070 or visit www.eckleyminersvillagemuseum.com. Eckley Miners’ Village is located just off Route 940 on Highland Road in Luzerne County. Crystal Cave Lantern Tours Experience an evening of wonder at the Crystal Cave in Kutztown! The historic natural attraction is open for special Lantern Tours on Saturday nights through August. Located in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country, just a short drive from the Pocono Mountains, the Crystal Cave has been visited by millions of people since its discovery in 1871. The site, open daily for interpretive tours, features a mineral and rock shop, a movie theater, nature trails, picnic facilities and more! Daily tours detail the underground cave’s stalactites, stalagmites, pillar and dropstone formations and other points of interest. Saturday night Lantern Tours feature myths, folklore and stories that are not included in the daily presentations. Period-dressed guides lead lantern-lit trips through the site’s grottoes and chambers, sharing tales and presenting re-creations of the original 19th century tours. Lantern Tours are restricted to guests age 8 and older. Tours begin at 7:30 p.m. Admission costs $20 for adults and $12 for children ages 8-11. For reservations, call (610) 683-6765. The Crystal Cave is located at 963 Crystal Cave Road in Kutztown. Visit www.crystalcavepa.com to learn more.

Bushkill Falls Opens New Mining Maze “The Niagara of Pennsylvania,” Bushkill Falls recently announced the addition of an exciting new attraction. The Bushkill Falls Mining Co. Maze is now open to adventurers in the Poconos. Constructed by Amaze’n Maze, the world’s #1 designer and builder of giant mazes, the Bushkill Falls Mining Co. Maze allows children and adults to sharpen their navigation skills while competing for the fastest times and having fun. Upon entering the maze, guests receive a passport marked with their start time. Maze runners must locate four checkpoints, and punch the corresponding letter on their passport. The goal is to spell the word “GOLD” and then exit the maze as quickly as possible. Guests with the fastest times are awarded prizes. “The theme of the maze will complement our Mining for Gemstones activity,” said Donna Smith, General Manager. “The 70’x70’ maze is located within close proximity to the Mining for Gemstones, which will allow for a fun experience for visitors of all ages.” Individual fees apply to all of Bushkill Falls’ attractions. Special entertainment packages are available. For more information, log on to www.visitbushkillfalls.com or call (570) 588-6682. Bushkill Falls is located on Bushkill Falls Road, off of Route 209 in Bushkill.
