Great Events, Greater Good Barley Creek Brewing Company will host Mady’s Snow Day on August 19 from 1 to 10:30 p.m. in its Pint-Sized Park. The outdoor event is a public celebration in the name of Madyson Brendyl Law, an ambitious girl who inspired others with her commitment to giving back.

This year’s Snow Day is booked full with entertainment and activities for guests of all ages. The stage will host eight musical acts including local favorites, The Maybabies, and activities will include a dunk tank, balloon bounce, mechanical bull, raffles and more. Admission to the event is just $5, and all proceeds go to Mady’s Angels, an organization dedicated to upholding Mady’s charitable efforts. The Sherman Theater will host the premier of horror film Six Degrees of Hell on August 24 at 7:10 p.m. The production, starring actor Cory Feldman, was filmed locally and created by a Poconos native; schoolteacher turned writer/producer Harrison Smith set much of the film at the reportedly haunted Hotel of Horror in Saylorsburg. The premier will feature a red carpet event and a “meet and greet” with Feldman. Proceeds benefit the United Way of Monroe County. Smith’s breakthrough film, The Fields, was shown at a similar benefit at the Sherman Theater last year. Ticket prices start at $10. Living History and Civil War Weekend

Walk down the main street of Eckley Miners’ Village this weekend and find yourself immersed in the sights, sounds and scents of the nineteenth century. See Union and Confederate troops camped out, watch wartime skirmishes and hear Civil War songs carrying through the colony. This authentic journey into the past is Eckley’s Living History and Civil War Weekend, a complete examination of nineteenth wartime life. The event runs Saturday, August 18 and Sunday, August 19 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and includes a variety of period-specific presentations. Explore the work of artisans and crafters, examine the music of the era with Kent Courtney, Dave Matsinko and Helen Torok, and sample the concessions during a Patriotic Tea at the Sharpe House. Admission to this rain or shine event is $6 for adults (13-64), $5.50 for seniors (65+) and $4 for children (6-12). Eckley Miners’ Village is a model of a nineteenth century industrial coal mining town designed to represent the lives of immigrant coal miners and their families. The Majestic Monarch

With wings like stained glass and graceful flight patterns, Monarch butterflies may appear delicate and fragile, but the beautiful creatures brave an annual migration that often spans the country. Monarchs travel farther than any other species of butterfly, up to three thousand miles to the California/Mexico coast every year. Amazingly, the masses of butterflies return to the same winter roosts as their ancestors, often hibernating in the exact same trees. Poconos Naturalists study adult monarchs in late summer and early fall, before they depart from our area. See pg. 23 for information on upcoming Monarch studies in the Poconos.

Quiet Valley Hosts STATE CRAFT FESTIVAL The 26th annual Pocono State Craft Festival will take place at Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm on Saturday, August 25 and Sunday, August 26. This year’s festival features a variety of genuine American crafts made by artisans from across the country. Crafters from the Tri-State Area, West Virginia, Connecticut and California will exhibit everything from leather to pottery and furniture to metal work. Daily crafting demonstrations will feature pottery throwing, wood turning and Theorem Painting. Festivities will also include bluegrass and gospel music by the Lost Ramblers, and an interactive children’s area. Quiet Valley will offer wagon rides and a baking demonstration. Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, rain or shine. Admission is $6 for guests 13 and older, and parking for this event is free. The final days of summer mark a crucial stage in the Monarch butterfly life cycle. The majestic creatures will soon begin their seasonal southern migration. Stop by one of these educational events to learn more about the butterflies before they head south for the winter! The Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC) will host a public Monarch study in Dingman’s Ferry on Saturday, August 18 from 1 to 3 p.m. The event, called Monarch Madness will teach guests about the beautiful creatures and allow time for exploration and discovery. Guests are encouraged butterflies. Admission is $5 ouraged to bring a net to catch and release s the butterflies and preregistration is required. Visit www.peec.org for more information. Also on August 18, Big Pocono State Park will host Monarchs and Milkweeds from 10 to 11:30 a.m. This program, presented by volunteer Karen Layton examines the butterflies and the local plants on which they feed and grow. Monarch enthusiast Ed Wesley will host a Monarch Butterfly Program at The Butterfly Barn on the same day from 10 a.m. to noon. Participants will learn about the Monarch life cycle and help to tag early migrants. Since 1996, Wesley and his associate Barbara Yeaman have rescued Monarch butterfly eggs and caterpillars from threatened habitats and raised them in the Butterfly barn. With the help local school children, they’ve nurtured and released almost 3,000 adult monarchs. The Butterfly Barn is part of the Delaware Highlands Conservancy. Sousa Centennial Concert in Delaware Water Gap One hundred years ago this week, legendary composer and conductor John Philip Sousa and his band performed in the riverside town of Delaware Water Gap. The concert was held at the Castle Inn Music Hall and featured classic compositions “The Federal March,” and “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” On Monday, August 20, music enthusiasts will flock to the Gap to commemorate the inspiring performance with a centennial concert on the grounds of the original venue. Musicians, including the Trinity Centennial Band, will gather to play Sousa’s music at the historic site. The event will be conducted by Stroudsburg native CWO Ben Bartholomew, USMC, and feature solos by Frank Kaderabek, cornet, and Christopher Souza, violin. Festivities are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.; gates open at 5. Admission is just $2, and proceeds benefit the Delaware Water Gap’s Dutot Museum and Gallery. Wally Lake Lake Fest 2012 It’s almost here! Wally Lake Fest returns to the shores of Lake Wallenpaupack on Friday, Friday August 24 through Sunday, August 26. The event, now in its third year, celebrates the “Big Lake” as its summer season comes to a close. This year’s festival is full of activities planned all around the Lake Region. Festivities begin Friday with the Hawley Farmers’ Market and live entertainment throughout the region. The Settlers Inn will host “Blues, Brews and Barbecue,” with music from The Liberto Trio from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday’s schedule is packed with indoor and outdoor fun. Activities start at 10 a.m., and include an Open Market Fair, a motorcycle “Ride for the Lake,” free kayak trials and sailboat rides, a sand sculpture contest, a boat parade and more! Four bands will perform throughout the day on a floating stage in front of the Visitors Center, and many local venues will offer live music in the evening hours.

Celebrations continue Sunday with the Open Market Fair, a lakeside breakfast buffet at Ehrhardt’s, PPL Dam and Power House tours, fly casting demos, and even a wing eating contest!
