94th Annual Greene-Dreher-Sterling Fair In its 94th year, the Greene-Dreher-Sterling (GDS) Fair gets better and better! Themed From the Farm Gate to the Dinner Plate, the fair continues through Monday, September 5th. Ride the rides, pet the farm animals, win a prize, or just relax and take in all the sights, sounds, and aromas. Cheer at the demolition derby, tractor pull, and truck pulls. Admire blue-ribbon pies and best-inshow pumpkins. Savor fair food favorites like sausage sandwiches, barbeque, cotton candy, popcorn, fudge, roasted nuts, caramel apples, funnel cakes, clams, and fresh-squeezed lemonade! Entertainment and activities to please all ages include live music, magic and comedy acts, clowns, 4-H judging, fair queen competition, baby pageant, frog jumping contest, dog shows, and horse shows. Browse the crafters’ tent and check out chainsaw carving. Delight in country fair traditions like amusement rides, games of chance and skill, a fiddle contest, and a pie-eating contest! 17th Annual Pocono Garlic Festival On Saturday and Sunday, September 3rd and 4th, the 17th Annual Pocono Garlic Festival will fill Shawnee Mountain Ski Area with garlic-y goodness! Indulge your garlic fantasies at this legendary event, featuring flavorful foods liberally laced with Pocono garlic, educational and wildlife programs, cooking classes, and fantastic entertainment. Presented by the Pocono Garlic Growers Association, as many as 25,000 tasteful folks attend annually! Non-stop music, novelty acts, strolling jugglers and magicians, and a children’s area with petting zoo make this an event for all ages. Vendors offer an abundance of food as local artists and artisans exhibit handcrafted garlic-themed creations of wood, pottery, jewelry, soap, and more. Zydeco-A-Go-Go, Burning Bridget Cleary, Juggernaut String Band, Blue Emerald Band, The Lost Ramblers, Jazz Juice, Nancy & Spencer Reed, the Len Mooney Duo, and PA Dance Network will perform, and Kathy Uhler of the Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation Center will bring a menagerie of animals for you to meet. All the garlic is grown and harvested by Knob View Farm, Burning Bridget Cleary Josie Porter Farm, Rolling Hills Farm, Fairman Farm, Burdick Creek Gardens, Mapleland Farms, Swarmbustin’ Honey, Vista Farm, and Mountaindale Farms. Constructed almost entirely of rough stone, its damp, gloomy interior has most often been compared to a dungeon. “Jailer” Dick Kreitner will be on hand to usher visitors into the 9’x12’ cells as he relates the history of the jail, including numerous jailbreaks and some of its more notorious occupants. Delaware Water Gap COTA Jazz & Arts Festival The Delaware Water Gap Celebration of the Arts (COTA) brings its 34thAnnual Jazz & Arts Festival to the scenic borough off I-80 exit 310, from Friday, September 9th through Sunday, September 11th! Walk the Tannersville Cranberry Bog Owned and protected by The Nature Conservancy, the Tannersville Cranberry Bog is a National Natural Landmark; it is a northern boreal bog, very unique for this area. After enjoying Hawk Falls the group will hike the Orchard Loop, which has some very steep sections and some rocky terrain. The trail leads up onto a bluff above Mud Run then down along the secluded creek. The terrain on this 2.5-mile hike is rated “most difficult.” Bring water and a snack for this hike! Come out to get some exercise, learn about the area’s rich history and natural features, and relax in the fresh air. September 10 - Spartan Race 2011 is coming to Blue Mountain Ski Area in Palmerton! September 14 – Go on a “Signs of Fall” Hike at 10:00am at the beautiful Varden Conservation Area, part of the Promised Land State Park Complex. Join the Park Naturalist for an extensive hike through the Tannery Access area looking for signs of autumn. It will be an easy-tomoderate two mile hike with some hilly sections. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring water. The hike will run from 10:00am to 12noon at the 343-acre Varden Conservation Area, situated along Route 296 in Wayne County near Lake Ariel. September 14 thru November 2 – It’s Fall Foliage Season, the most colorful time of year to be in the Pocono Mountains! Since the Poconos cover such a large area, there are three distinct zones in which the colors reach their peak at different times. In the Northern Zone (Wayne County and parts of Pike County), the colors are at their brightest between October 1 and 14. In the Central Zone (Monroe County and lower Pike County), the best time to see the colors is in mid-October. Head towards the Southern Zone (Carbon County) between October 19 and 31 to catch the latest peak display of the season. Thanks to the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau, leaf watchers can call the 24-Hour Pocono Mountains Fall Foliage Hotline at (570) 421-5565 to find out exactly when and where to see the colors at their peak throughout the four county Pocono Mountains region. September 16 – The US Army Corps of Engineers has announced that, if water levels are sufficient, today is the target date for a

Recreational Dam Release on the Lehigh River, creating breathtaking whitewater conditions. By regulating the Francis Walter Dam near White Haven, the Corps plans to release hundreds of cubic feet per second of additional water into the Lehigh. Rafters, kayakers and other adventurous boaters anxiously await the dam release, and will flock to the river for a chance to ride whitewater. See a golden eagle, a peregrine falcon and a sawwhet owl when you join Bill Streeter of the Delaware Valley Raptor Center for a program to learn about these and other birds of prey. See six live raptors and spend a magical hour learning about the raptors of the northeast. Streeter will entertain as well as educate you with the knowledge he has gained through 30 years of studying and rehabilitating raptors and through practicing the ancient art of falconry. Be sure to keep an eye out for fossils along the way! This hike is rated “moderate to strenuous.” The cost to attend is $5 and registration is required. PEEC, a non-profit center, is located off Route 209 in Dingmans Ferry within the beautiful Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The center enhances environmental awareness, knowledge, and appreciation through hands-on experience in a natural outdoor classroom. Watch and help in the making of delicious homemade apple butter in a 50-gallon copper pot that needs to be continuously stirred; visitors are welcome to try their hand at stirring the pot! During the program, you’ll explore some local geocaches including one that will lead you through a mature and diverse forest noted for unusual rock formations and incredible views of the Delaware River. September 17 – Learn about In-Stream Invertebrates during a program starting at 10:00am the Monroe County Environmental Education Center (MCEEC) near Bartonsville. Join watershed specialist Trish Attardo for this program on the interesting critters living in our streams. Participants will get an up-close look at live insects and other creatures that spend part of their life cycle in local streams, while viewing and hearing about their adaptations for survival. This 1½ hour program will include a slide-illustrated talk on the diversity of stream life in the Pocono Mountains. The cost is $5 adults, $3 children under 12. To find the MCEEC from Interstate 80 (exit 302 from I-80 West or 302B from I-80 East), go north on Route 611, travel ½ mile to the next traffic light in Bartonsville, and turn left onto Rimrock Drive.
