PRCA Rodeo & Chili Cook-Off Gallops into Shawnee! Shawnee Mountain Ski Area will host the 15th annual PRCA Rodeo & Chili Cook-Off on Saturday and Sunday, September 24th and 25th! See genuine cowboys compete in Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) events like Saddle Bronc Riding, Bull Riding, Bareback Bronc Riding, Calf Roping, Team Roping, and Bull Dogging. Talented Women’s Professional Rodeo Association riders will compete in the WPRA Barrel Race. The PRCA Rodeo starts at 2:00pm on both days. Slopeside seating is available, so bring a blanket or lawn chair. Autumn begins September 23 Friday, September 23 is the First Day of Autumn, the Autumnal Equinox! An equinox occurs twice a year, when Earth’s axis not tilted away from or towards the Sun, and the Sun can be observed directly overhead at the Equator. Equinox is derived from Latin words aequus (equal) and nox (night), because around the equinox, night and day are of nearly equal duration. At equinox, the Sun is at one of two opposite points above the equator, the vernal point or the autumnal point. Vernal equinox occurs in March, and the autumnal equinox occurs on Friday, September 23 this year, making it the first day of autumn. This is a northern boreal bog, very unique for this part of the country. Protected by The Nature Conservancy, the Tannersville bog is a National Natural Landmark. The group ventures into the wetland habitat which includes orchids and insecteating plants. Access to the interior of the bog is substantial along a 1650’ “floating” boardwalk, providing photo opportunities. Highlights include viewing swamp honeysuckle, great rhododendron, yellow loose-strife, and more. If you ever had an interest in flying, now’s the time! Become a charter member of the region’s only flying club Pocono Mountains Flying Club The purpose of this non-profit club is to encourage all types of flying, training, education and camaraderie. The Pocono Mountains Flying Club provides unique membership opportunities that include the use of a Cessna 150 airplane at $50 per hour, wet. Additionally, FAA approved flight instructors (CFI) will be available to all members for an additional fee of $30 per hour. There are now two options for anyone wishing to become a member of the club. A 90 day membership is available for a ‘buy in’ of $500.00 which allows for 10 hours of plane rent at $50/hr wet to be used within 90 days. (This $50/hr charge is not part of the $500.00 ‘buy in’.) There are no monthly dues for this membership. By the conclusion of the 90 day period the membership may be converted to a full membership for a refundable $1700.00. This membership may not be resold and voting rights are precluded in this membership. Full membership requires a refundable $2200.00 ‘buy-in’ and dues of $50 per month. The membership may be resold with the club’s permission.
