Shawnee Mountain hosts

Autumn Timber Festival The Autumn Timber Festival rolls into Shawnee Mountain Ski Area on Saturday and Sunday, October 8 and 9! Catch nature’s splendor at beautiful Shawnee Mountain during prime fall foliage time. Count on some great entertainment too, including lumberjack demonstrations, chainsaw sculpting, tethered hot air balloon rides, live music, children’s activities, and food and craft vendors galore. Watch the Ultimate Air Dogs Competition, where you’ll see dogs competing in long distance “dockjumping” into the lake! All ages enjoy this action-packed event. Slopeside seating is available for this event, so bring a blanket or lawn chair. Festival hours are 11:00am to 6:00pm both days. Purchase event tickets at the gate or in advance, and be sure to ask about the variety of great accommodations nearby. Find Shawnee Mountain Ski Area easily on Hollow Road via River Road in Shawnee-on-Delaware, off I-80 exit 309. Great Pocono Pumpkin Festival, through October 31st A favorite fall adventure, the Great Pocono Pumpkin Festival, returns to Country Junction on Route 209, Forest Inn, 6565 Interchange Road, Lehighton. The “Largest Pumpkin Festival in the Poconos” gets bigger and better every year, including Ghost Town, USA. Challenge the Quest for Treasure Corn Maze, and the Kiddies Hay Maze with a corn bin and games. Unlimited Daytime Hayrides are fun for all; see costumed characters point out their own Perfect Pumpkin. Pony rides, the Blue Lagoon, Pirate Ship, Moon Walks, and Kiddies Haunted House promise fun for youngsters! Visit the free Petting Farm with goats, deer, piglets, ducks, and chickens. Steam Train Excursions Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton offers a Fall Foliage Steam Train Excursion to Moscow on Saturday, October 1 at 11:00am. The round-trip excursion rolls past historic buildings, through a tunnel, along a mountain stream, past reservoirs, and amidst woodlands. Purchase refreshments at the restored 1904 train station in Moscow; see the steam train arrive around 11:30am. The train returns in Scranton at 1:00pm. On Sunday, October 2, take a round-trip Fall Foliage Steam Train Excursion to Tobyhanna, departing Scranton at 11:00am and returning at 3:00pm. There are 3 distinct zones in which foliage colors peak at different times. In the Northern Zone (Wayne County and parts of Pike County), colors are brightest between October 1 and 14. In the Central Zone (Monroe County and lower Pike County), the best time is mid-October. Head to the Southern Zone (Carbon County) between October 19 and 31 to catch the peak display. Ironman 70.3 Pocono Mountains Triathlon On Sunday, October 2, the Ironman 70.3 Pocono Mountains Triathlon begins in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and finishes on Main Street in Stroudsburg. A Colorful Time to be in the Poconos!

Autumn is one of the most beautiful times to be in the Pocono Mountains of Northeast Pennsylvania! The landscape blazes with color as leaf bearing trees prepare for winter, creating one of Mother Nature’s most beautiful displays. The lush palette of scarlet, gold, and orange is the perfect backdrop for hiking, horseback riding, special events, and happy vacation photos. Depending on the severity of the previous winter, the amount of rainfall, and other factors, the first signs of color tint the mountains in September. This intensifies until hues become brightest in October, then disappear in the chill November air. The Pocono Mountains span 2,400+ square miles, with 3 distinct zones in which colors peak at varying times. In northern Wayne County and Pike County, the trees reach their zenith between October 1st and 14th. In the central zone of Monroe County and lower Pike County, the most colorful time is mid-October. In Carbon County and the southern zone, catch the best display between October 19th and 31st. The foliage of the Pocono Mountains is so flamboyant due to expansive mountain views, climate, and the variety of tree species. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is a meeting ground for trees of the southern and northern states of the east, with boundaries of species overlapping within the Poconos. Take a fall foliage tour by plane, train, automobile, watercraft, trolley, or horse. Amble along a lakeshore, a State Park trail, or stop by a scenic point. Enjoy the crisp autumn air and super views!

In summer, leaves capture the sun’s energy and turn it into food through a process called photosynthesis, made possible by a pigment called chlorophyll, which keeps leaves green in summer. Chlorophyll absorbs sunlight, turning it into the sugars trees need. Yellow and orange pigments are present, but they are overpowered by green chlorophyll. In winter, trees shed their leaves to slow the evaporation of water which is difficult to replace when the ground is frozen; also, trees may be damaged when water within the leaves freezes and expands. To prepare for winter, trees grow a corky layer which prevents water from entering leaves. Without water, the tree stops making chlorophyll, and the old chlorophyll fades away. Leaves then show their yellow and orange pigments, which were always there! For red leaves, the explanation differs. The corky layer not only stops water from entering the leaves, it also prevents sugars from exiting the leaves. When the sun shines on the leaves, the sugars react with a chemical in the leaf to form a red pigment. A leaf that is in complete shade will not turn red.

Terrain is rocky and uneven on this 2.5-mile hike rated “more difficult;” wear sturdy shoes or boots, and bring water and a snack. October 20 & 21 - Catch a shooting star when the Orionids Meteor Shower peaks on these two nights! The Orionids Meteor Shower produces about twenty meteors per hour during its peak, with best viewing to the east after midnight. The best time to see the Orionids in 2011 will probably be in the wee hours before dawn on October 21 or 22, though the waning crescent moon may slightly obstruct this year’s display. The fast-moving Orionids meteors occasionally leave persistent trains and bright fireballs. This shower usually peaks on the 21st, but it is highly irregular. A good show could be experienced on any morning from October 18 - 23. October 21 – Observe SawWhet Owl Banding performed by the Northeast PA Audubon Society (NEPAS) at 8:00pm. Learn about the migration of our smallest nocturnal raptor (8 inches), witness its capture in mist nets for banding and the collection of valuable data, and perhaps hold one and assist in its release. This is a time-dependent event; only at the last minute do the owls let organizers know they’re heading south! For information and reservations, call Bob at (570) 676-9969.
