This Week in the Poconos

Night A

s autumn ignites chilling challenges in place to embrace Halloween’s eerie approach, considering the shadowy hours of darkness a favorable time to zip line has Pocono TreeVentures Hallowscream Nights soaring to astounding heights in Bushkill. Saturday nights are already in flight, with October 14th harnessing Friday evenings. Adding Columbus and Halloween weekend Sundays to the mix has TreeVentures spokesperson Gina Bertucci sharing more for the scaring, “Our Hautologist has spent the year designing new ways to give our guests the creeps.” “For a great evening of fun start with spending time in the [aerial] ropes course and dual racing ziplines that reach 35 mph in the dark,” she suggests, adding, “It is a unique experience during the day and at night it’s even better!”

While the spooky 30 minute Haunted Hay Ride may bring things down to earth, an expanded Haunted Trail houses

live actors, creepy characters and an assortment of “Things that go bump in the night.” Settling down on the ground with a lawn chair and blanket sound appealing? A scary movie shown against Haunted Hollow barn offers an opportunity for a place to chill as others get their thrills. Hallowscream Nights run from 7 to midnight. Enjoy $39 combo packs that include the Haunted Hay Ride, pumpkin painting, scary movies under the stars, zip lining and tree climbing with headlamps in the dark. Or if you’re in the mood for more of a per play way, Haunted Hay Ride tickets are $12 with ropes and zip line tickets purchased separately at $20 each.

A

s forecasts predict fall foliage splendor erupting into mid-October, let’s share details on why leaves change color.

Did You Know...In warmer months, leaves capture the sun’s energy and turn it into food through a process called photosynthesis, made possible by a pigment called chlorophyll keeping leaves green in the summer. Chlorophyll absorbs sunlight, turning it into the sugars trees need. Yellow and orange pigments, while present, are overpowered by green chlorophyll. As winter approaches, trees shed their leaves to slow moisture evaporation which is difficult to replace when the ground is frozen and may be damaging when water within the leaves freezes and expands. To prepare, trees grow a corky layer that prevents water from entering leaves. Without water, the tree stops making chlorophyll, and the old chlorophyll fades away. Leaves then unveil those yellow and orange pigments! For red leaves, the explanation differs. The corky layer not only stops water from entering leaves, it also prevents sugars from exiting. When the sun shines on the leaves, the sugars react with a chemical to form a red pigment, with that in mind, a leaf that is in complete shade will thereby not turn red. This Week...Go Take a Hike or make time to sit back and capture the essence of nature’s beautiful transformation in this truly mesmerizing Pocono Mountains experience!
