Fernwood presents

Magic in Toyland

On Sunday, December 26th, Fernwood Hotel & Resort presents Magic in Toyland in the Event Center, featuring the magic of John Bundy & Morgan. Camelback hosts Skiing Santas Arrive at Camelback Mountain Resort dressed as Santa, Mrs. Claus, an elf, or a reindeer on Friday, December 24th at 12:00pm, and you’ll receive a free lift ticket for the day! To receive your free lift ticket for use on Christmas Eve Day, you must report to Guest Services before 10:00am, fully dressed and ready to ski or snowboard as Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus, an elf, or a reindeer. A group photo will be taken at 11:00am in the base area. The best costume will win a 2010/2011 Camelback season pass! Guest Services will make the final determination on whether or not your costume merits a free lift ticket for the day; clothing articles must be made of fabric, not paper. Christmas Village Display at Tobyhanna Train Station From now through Saturday, January 15th, the Tobyhanna Train Station and Museum on Route 423 in Tobyhanna is open on weekends with a Christmas Village Display. Hosted by the Pocono Rail Historical Society, the station is all decked out for the holidays, including Christmasthemed running model trains! All ages will love to tour the restored facility with the Station Master, a delightful and knowledgeable fellow, and learn how it really used to be when the station was a bustling business. Enjoy railroading videos, fascinating running model train layouts, memorabilia, railroad art exhibits, and railroad and trainrelated souvenirs. Open seasonally and for special events, on Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00pm to 4:00pm. No admission fee is charged, and parking is free, although donations are graciously accepted. PennDOT Winter Services Guide With nearly 40,000 miles of roads and 25,000 bridges statewide, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is responsible for maintaining enough snow-lane miles to circle the globe nearly 4 times! Accomplishing this task involves 2,200+ department trucks, plows, and salt spreaders, 5,400 licensed department operators, and 400 truck owner/operators hired to assist as needed. Last year, PennDOT used 760,000 tons of anti-skid and 994,000 tons of salt to keep us moving. Take a look at history during a guided tour of Eckley Miners’ Village, an authentic 19th Century mining town. Eckley was once a thriving, company-owned coal mining “patch town” with a population of 1000+. With the advent of strip mining in the 20th century, underground mining became obsolete, and scores of these towns disappeared along with the jobs. The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission

has partially restored this town to its former condition, creating a rare opportunity to get a glimpse at what was once a way of life. Exciting Restoration Project at Eckley Miners’ Village A Pennsylvania Department of General Services (DGS) project, Restoration of Miners’ Houses at Eckley Miners’ Village, is underway. The comprehensive $2.181 million project will structurally stabilize, reconstruct, and repair exteriors of designated buildings and portions of buildings. A total of 8 miners’ houses and 2 superintendents’ dwellings will be physically lifted from their foundations and moved aside, allowing workers to completely rebuild each foundation. Remediation efforts will remove any asbestos insulation or lead paint which may be present. Work commenced in September and is slated to be completed by January, 2012. “This project is an important step in preserving the Village’s historic buildings, so that future generations will be able to enjoy the legacy of our coal mining heritage,” said David Dubick, Eckley historic site administrator. General contractor for the work is WilkesBarre-based Panzitta Enterprises, which specializes in commercial and government construction. “We are honored to be selected by the Department of General Services and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission to be the general contractor on such an important project,” said John Panzitta, president of Panzitta Enterprises. Pennsylvania’s Department of General Services oversees procurement of goods and services, manages nonhighway capital projects, and is responsible for numerous core operations of state government including management of state buildings and facilities. DGS also serves as the commonwealth’s real estate agent and insurance broker. Eckley is located on Highland Road near Freeland, 3 miles off Route 940, 10 miles east of downtown Hazleton. The site preserves a way of life which dominated the anthracite coal region for 150+ years. January 15 – See Pocono Mountain history come to life when you visit the 18th Annual Tobyhanna Ice Harvest on Mill Pond #1 in Tobyhanna. Before the days of refrigeration, large ice houses on several lakes in the Pocono Mountains provided ice year-round to households in the New York metropolitan area. Today, visitors will gather at Mill

Pond No. 1 where volunteers will cut ice from the pond using authentic tools and equipment. The replica ice house on-site will store enough ice to last into the summer. The Ice Harvest will get underway around 9:00am and cutting will continue until the ice house is full, usually by about 2:30pm. The public is invited to come to help or to watch. Additionally, a steampowered train full of passengers from Steamtown in Scranton will arrive at nearby Tobyhanna Station at approximately 11:00am for a three-hour layover; see the next listing in this column for more information. To find the Ice Harvest, take exit 8 off I-380 and proceed to Main Street Tobyhanna. Turn onto Mill Street, go through the one-lane underpass (turns into Lakeside Drive), then ¼ mile and see the lake and ice house on the right. Signs will be posted. Many frozen lakes as well as the headwaters of the Lehigh River are seen on this 27-mile segment of track. The Tobyhanna Ice Harvest Excursion departs Steamtown in Scranton promptly at 10:00am and will return at around 3:00pm. Equinunk - The name of this Wayne County village has 2 Native American translations. One is the trout stream, and the other is where articles of clothing were distributed. Join environmental educator Karen N. Boyle from 1:00 to 3:00pm to explore the trails of Kettle Creek, searching for clues left by different animals found on the property. Besides animal sign, many other interesting discoveries abound on the sanctuary during this glorious season. The cost to attend is $5 and pre-registration is required by Tuesday, January 25. January 30 – Die-hard golfers are invited to play in the annual Ice Tee Golf Tournament atop frozen Lake Wallenpaupack! Presented by the Pocono Lake Region Chamber of Commerce, the tournament will take place on the lake in front of Ehrhardt’s Waterfront Restaurant, Route 507 in Tafton (two miles east of Hawley). Ice conditions permitting, two challenging 9-hole courses will be created, complete with tree-lined fairways, water traps, obstacles and roughs! An alternate location will be selected if the ice is unsafe. The tournament will be held from 9:00am until 2:00pm; golfers without a reserved tee time may play on an “as available” basis. Golfers should bring a putter and two other clubs; colored balls will be provided at registration.
