Pocono Bluegrass and Folk Society WinterFest The Pocono Bluegrass and Folk Society announces its 11th annual WinterFest at music-friendly venues in and around the ‘burgs! The 3-day event, showcasing 20 outstanding groups, kicks off Friday evening, January 28th at The Gem and Keystone in Shawnee-on-Delaware, Hideaway Lounge, Main Street Lounge in Stroudsburg, and the Old Mill Pub. On Saturday, January 29th the East Stroudsburg BPO Elks Lodge is the place to be from 12:00pm to 9:00pm, including many bands, a free program for kids at 1:00pm, and free lutherie workshops. Hear more music at the Hideaway Lounge in Stroudsburg’s Pocono Inne Towne, beginning at 8:00pm. At the BPO Elks Lodge on Sunday, January 30th, join a traditional gospel celebration at 10:00am, bands performing from 11:00am, and free guitar and banjo workshops. Very reasonable general admission is $30.00/weekend, $20.00/Saturday, $15.00/Sunday; ages 12 through 17 are admitted for just $10.00 per day, and children ages 11 and under are admitted free! Ice Tee Golf Tournament at Lake Wallenpaupack Hardy golfers of all abilities are invited to play in the Ice Tee Golf Tournament, atop frozen Lake Wallenpaupack, on Sunday, January 30th! Sponsored by the Pocono Lake Region Chamber of Commerce (PLRCC), this annual tourney tees off by Ehrhardt’s Waterfront Restaurant on Route 507 in Tafton. Ice conditions permitting, 2 challenging 9-hole courses will be ready for play, complete with tree-lined fairways, water traps, obstacles, and roughs. An alternate location will be selected if the ice is unsafe. Fees are $15.00/golfer in advance, or $20.00/golfer on event day. Tee times are from 9:00am to 2:00pm; golfers without a reserved tee time may play on an as-available basis. Golfers should bring a putter and 2 other clubs; colored balls will be provided at registration. Participate in the Closest to Wally Driving Contest; prizes will be awarded to those who land the closest drive to Wally Paupack, the snowman-mascot of the Pocono Mountains’ Lake Region, as well as to the craziest sled and wackiest hat. Jack Frost Mountain hosts Jim Rooney J4 & J5 Races The annual memorial Jim Rooney J4 & J5 Races will happen on Saturday, January 29th, at Jack Frost Mountain Ski Area, located off Route 940 west of Blakeslee, near Lake Harmony. When Jack Frost opened in 1972 as a companion resort to Big Boulder Ski Area, the groundwork had been laid for an expertlydesigned ski resort. All of the slopes, lifts, buildings, and snowmaking were planned as part of the original construction. Today, Jack Frost Mountain continues the tradition, with cutting-edge winter sports features, services, and amenities. Women’s Ski/Snowboard Seminar A Women’s Seminar is planned for Saturday and Sunday, January 22nd and 23rd, at Jack Frost Mountain Ski Area near Blakeslee. Ladies, this weekend is for you! In winter, hundreds of bald eagles migrate to the Pocono Mountains in search of open water, fresh fish, and undisturbed habitat. In addition to these visiting migrants, the region is also proud of a growing, breeding population of resident eagles. Every Saturday

& Sunday from January 1 through mid-March, trained Eagle Institute volunteers will staff popular viewing locations at Lackawaxen and elsewhere around the Delaware River to assist eagle watchers in sighting these majestic birds. Eagle Institute staffers have spotting scopes, extra binoculars, and helpful information for eagle watchers, and can direct visitors to other viewing locations. From April through September, eagle watching is not encouraged because of the eagles’ sensitivity to human disturbance during this critical time. Please respect these resident eagles and their young! The Eagle Institute Winter Field Office at 176 Scenic Drive in Lackawaxen (at the end of the Roebling Bridge) is open every Friday through Sunday from January until mid-March. Eagle Watch! Hundreds of bald eagles migrate to the Pocono Mountains of northeast Pennsylvania each winter in search of open water, fresh fish, and undisturbed habitat. In addition to migratory eagles, our region is home to a growing, breeding population of resident eagles. Every Saturday and Sunday from now through mid-March, volunteers trained by The Eagle Institute staff popular viewing locations at Lackawaxen and elsewhere along the Delaware River, assisting eagle watchers in spotting these majestic birds. Self-guided eagle watchers are aided by eagle etiquette volunteers, who have spotting scopes, extra binoculars, eagle information, and directions to various viewing locations. From April through September, eagle watching is discouraged because of the eagles’ sensitivity to human disturbance during this critical time. Please respect the eagles and their young! Bald Eagle Field Trips Guided Bald Eagle Field Trips organized by the Monroe County Environmental Education Center (MCEEC) are planned for Fridays, January 21st, January 28th, February 4th, and February 11th. The 4 field trips’ destination is the Poconos’ Upper Delaware River, in search of resident and wintering migratory bald eagles. This scenic region provides a beautiful backdrop and excellent opportunities for observing these majestic raptors. Environmental Educator Darryl Speicher will lead the 1st trip, and Environmental Educator Brian Hardiman will lead the following 3 trips. PEEC Eagle Watch Excursion Watch On Saturday, February 5th, join Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC) staff for an Eagle Watch Excursion, viewing resident and visiting bald eagles! The trip will run from 9:00am to 3:00pm, and transportation is provided. Your group will stop at the Eagle Institute and other popular locations to look for bald eagles soaring, feeding, and nestguarding. It’s Time for Ice Fishing! Wintertime in the Pocono Mountains of northeast Pennsylvania offers a multitude of diversions and ways to appreciate the pristine beauty of nature. Now is the time to go ice fishing, a simple and inexpensive winter sport that’s perfect in the Poconos! A popular and effective ice fishing device called a tip-up consists of 2 pieces of wood in an X shape; you’ll also need a hook, a spool of line, and a small flag. When a fish pulls line off the spool, a lever flips and the flag tips up. You may also use a fishing rod to ice fish. Make a small hole in the ice with an axe, crowbar, digging bar, or auger. Hook your bait, and drop into the water through the hole. Savor a snack and sip something warm in your thermos, and relax. Sport fishing is a rewarding, intergenerational pastime, and soon you’ll be hooked! A fishing license is required in most cases, ice thickness is critical, and live bait is best. February 11 thru 28 – Experience an Old West adventure carved from nearly 100 tons of crystal clear ice when Sculpted Ice Works and Crystal Cabin Fever present the Wild West in Ice, a spectacular winter ice display. Each year, the talented ice carvers at Sculpted Ice Works on Route 590 in Lakeville create “Crystal Cabin Fever,” an indoor, interactive ice display for all ages. This year’s theme is the Old West. Enter through an ice mine maze and explore an old western town. Sit on an ice covered wagon and drive the team of ice horses. Ride this year’s train-themed, giant dualrun ice slide to guarantee twice the fun! See wild buffalo, wolves, birds and more all carved out of ice. Live ice carving demonstrations will be ongoing daily. Bring your camera and thirst for hot chocolate. New this year will be a Texas Barbecue with smoked barbecue pork and beef brisket sandwiches, hot dogs and hamburgers. On Saturdays, February 12 & 26, come and watch the nationally-sanctioned Ice Carving Competitions from noon to 4:00pm each day. The chainsaws will buzz as professional carvers compete for cash prizes on February 12, and then go on to duel it out in a multi-sculpture elimination event on February 26. The detailed sculptures of Crystal Cabin Fever are created using ice blocks harvested in the Sculpted Ice Works plant here in Northeast PA. The company is the major provider of ice blocks, ice carvings, ice bars and liquor luges to the
