Carve Out Time for Fun: Crystal Cabin Fever In the Poconos, creativity rises when temperatures fall. Crystal Cabin Fever, a spectacular annual winter ice display, takes place at Sculpted Ice Works on Route 590, near Lake Wallenpaupack in Lakeville. The ice extravaganza runs from February 10 through 26. This year’s theme, African Safari, features ice-sculpted likenesses of animals straight from the Serengeti, a giant 36-ton ice slide carved out of 240 blocks of ice and more. Have your photo taken atop a baby elephant; take a seat on a throne of ice. The entire indoor interactive display is comprised of over 100 tons of ice. Each weekend the event features ice carving competitions, food vendors, wood carving demonstrations, glass blowing and other attractions. Professional ice carving competitions are held on February 11 and 25. The event is open seven days a week. Hours Monday through Saturday are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays. Ice Carvings Come Alive in Stroudsburg Downtown Stroudsburg’s 3rd Annual Ice Festival on February 18th offers a cool way to celebrate winter. Downtown businesses will adorn their storefronts with ice carvings, and offer shopping sales and specials in honor of the festivities. Ice your own cupcake at Kitchen Chemistry (733 Main Street). Enjoy champagne while shopping at Dawn of New York (542 Main Street). Other Main Street shops include Dreamland Creations, Serafina, The 14 KT Outlet Fine Jewelry, Fitzpatrick’s Irish Imports and Dunkelbergers Sporting Goods. Dogs Find Safe Haven Approximately six to eight million dogs that end up in shelters are euthanized in the US each year, according to the Humane Society. The majority of these dogs are not dangerous or ill; they are simply unwanted. For Safe Haven Pet Rescue founder, Laura Sollers, saving these animals is her life’s work. Take Trigger, a two-year old border collie who was rescued hours before his scheduled euthanasia and fostered by Safe Haven for over a year, and who Laura describes as “quirky.” It looked as if Trigger would never be adopted. He didn’t show well at adoption fairs. And even when a family finally wanted him, Laura had reservations: the family hadn’t owned a dog in years and their yard was not fenced in—a no-no for border collies. But Trigger seemed to love the family’s kids and, Laura says, “the sweet dog deserved a chance.” Happily, Trigger turned into one of Laura’s 500 success stories. His highly active family takes him boating, camping and jogging. “It’s a perfect fit,” Laura says. “Every time I see a picture of him now, I cry.” Most of Laura’s stories end happily. All of the dogs wind up with Safe Haven because they’re scheduled for imminent euthanasia by the kill shelters from which Safe Haven volunteers rescue them. Volunteers also foster dogs and screen adoptive families. Safe Haven’s next Adoption Day is February 19th at Tractor Supply on Route 209 in Brodheadsville. SHOWBIZ IN SHAWNEE Bringing world-class theater to the Pocono Mountains, The Shawnee Playhouse presents classical and new plays, musicals, operas, concerts and Shakespeare. Main stage productions, which run from May through December, feature professional actors who audition in New York City. From January through March, off-season Patrick Ball in shows feature Shawnee’s semi-professional performance troupe, the “O’Carolan’s Farewell To Music” Worthington Players. On February 17th and 18th, The Shawnee Playhouse presents a special, must-see show—O’Carolan’s Farewell to Music. This oneperson musical theater piece about the legendary life, turbulent times and captivating music of the celebrated Irish artist is performed by Patrick Ball who, with Peter Glazer, also co-wrote the hit. 35 Annual Maple Sugaring Day Maple Sugaring Day at the Monroe County Environmental Education Center’s Marshall Creek site celebrates the scrumptious wonder that is maple syrup. The day will feature a tour of the Sugarbush, including stops to learn about Native American and early pioneer methods of making maple syrup, the evaporator process and methods of identifying and tapping a maple tree. After the 90-minute tour, you can taste the syrup on freshly made pancakes. Maple syrup—a sweet treat that actually contains health benefits. As a whole, unprocessed food, maple syrup contains a high concentration of the types of antioxidants that may lower your risk of certain diseases. You can substitute maple syrup for white sugar in some recipes—cookies, for example. However, be mindful that maple syrup, like all sweeteners, should be consumed only in moderation. DUCKS Hit the Slopes at Camelback SkiDUCK (Skiing and Snowboarding for Disabled and Under Privileged Children and Older Kids), a new grassroots non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of disabled and at-risk children through snow sports, arrives at Camelback on February 12th. The group of 24 kids, aged seven to 18, will receive a free lift ticket, group lesson and equipment rental. Tony Keller, Director of the snow sports school at Camelback, started skiing at age 12 with a group reminiscent of SkiDUCK. He learned firsthand about the joys of snow sports as well as the importance of volunteerism. Tony has been living his dream career since first arriving at Camelback in 1999. Soaring Through the Winter Season During winter, hundreds of bald eagles migrate to the Poconos, joining a thriving population of resident eagles.
