EXPERIENCE WILD WEST IN ICE Sculpted Ice Works in Lakeville presents Wild West in Ice when Crystal Cabin Fever happens from Friday, February 11th through Monday, February 28th. Experience all the elements of an Old West adventure, carved from more than 100 tons of crystal clear ice. Enter through an ice coal mine maze to explore an old west town. Sit on an ice covered wagon, and imagine driving the team of ice horses. Ride the train-themed, dual-run, giant ice slide. Marvel at wild buffalo, wolves, birds, and more, all carved from ice. Catch the daily ice-carving demonstrations; bring your camera, and a thirst for hot chocolate! A tasty Texas BBQ features delicious smoked pork and beef brisket sandwiches, or munch hot dogs and hamburgers with all the fixin’s. On Saturdays, February 12th and 26th, see the exciting professional ice carving competitions. Sculpted Ice Works is the major provider of ice blocks and carvings, ice bars, and liquor luges to the hospitality industry throughout the northeast and mid-Atlantic, as well as a producer of large ice installations. The detailed sculptures are created from ice blocks harvested in the Sculpted Ice Works plant on Route 590 in Lakeville near Lake Wallenpaupack. Hours are 11:00am to 6:00pm Monday through Saturday, and 11:00am to 4:00pm on Sunday. Admission is $10.00/general, $6.00/ ages 3-15. ICE HARVEST at the Howetown Farm Show Grounds Come one, come all to an old fashioned Ice Harvest at the Howetown Farm Show grounds on Saturday, February 5th! See how, in times of yore, folks cut and preserved ice in the winter for use during the hot summer months. Watch as ice blocks are cut by hand from the pond using authentic tools, and then hauled to the icehouse with a team of horses. The ice will be packed tightly with sawdust or straw, and will last long into the summer. The ice cutting will begin around 10:00am, continuing until the icehouse is full. There is no admission charge, and parking is free, so just come along to enjoy a day reliving history. This is an all-outdoor event; dress for the weather. The Howetown Farm Show grounds are on Route 196 in Sterling, adjacent to Gas Hollow Road. In case of inclement weather, or to learn more about this historical re-enactment, call (570) 595-0452.

Nescopeck State Park hosts

Winterfest 2011

Experience the wonders of winter during WinterFest 2011 from 11:00am to 3:00pm on Saturday, February 5th in beautiful Nescopeck State Park! Perfect for all ages, this 9th annual event will include a variety of winter activities such as snowshoeing, ice fishing, children’s games, and more. Dress for the weather, and bring your sleds and ice skates for more winter fun on your own! WinterFest is among many free interpretive programs offered at state parks throughout the year; no registration is required. Pocono Outdoor Club Excursion Members of the Pocono Outdoor Club invite you to join them on an Excursion at Nescopeck State Park. On Saturday, February 12th, hike, snowshoe, or cross-country ski along the park’s beautiful trails. This trek meets at 10:00am at Park Headquarters, and duration and difficulty will be commensurate with the group’s abilities and the snow conditions. In winter, hundreds of bald eagles migrate to the Pocono Mountains in search of open water, fresh fish, and undisturbed habitat. In addition to these visiting migrants, the region is also proud of a growing, breeding population of resident eagles. Every Saturday & Sunday from January 1 through

mid-March, trained Eagle Institute volunteers will staff popular viewing locations at Lackawaxen and elsewhere around the Delaware River to assist eagle watchers in sighting these majestic birds. Eagle Institute staffers have spotting scopes, extra binoculars, and helpful information for eagle watchers, and can direct visitors to other viewing locations. From April through September, eagle watching is not encouraged because of the eagles’ sensitivity to human disturbance during this critical time. Please respect these resident eagles and their young! The Eagle Institute Winter Field Office at 176 Scenic Drive in Lackawaxen (at the end of the Roebling Bridge) is open every Friday through Sunday from January until mid-March. February 4 – A guided Bald Eagle Field Trip has been organized by the Monroe County Environmental Education Center (MCEEC) near Bartonsville. The MCEEC is offering a series of field trips to the Poconos’ Upper Delaware River in search of resident and wintering bald eagles. The Columns’ Lincoln Flag is a piece of the 9/11 Flag! The famed 9/11 Flag, on a whirlwind national tour, will be in Milford on Saturday, February 12th. The tattered, 30’x20’ United States flag was found near the World Trade Center, shortly after the 9/11 tragedy, by a local Shohola resident. Volunteers around the nation, using various US flags surviving significant tragedies, have stitched them together to create a new piece of American History. Appropriately, a bit of the famed Lincoln Flag of the Pike County Historical Society (PCHS) will be stitched in time! Stained with the blood of our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln, the flag has been in the PCHS collection since 1954. At home in the 1904 neo-classical manse known as The Columns, the PCHS has bestowed some much-needed preservation and stabilization upon the flag. The destination is the Poconos’ Upper Delaware River, in search of resident and wintering bald eagles. This scenic region provides a beautiful backdrop and excellent opportunities for observing these majestic raptors. February 12 - The famed 9/11 Flag, which has been on a whirlwind tour of the United States over the last several months, will make a stop at the Pike County Historical Society Museum, located at 608 Broad Street in Milford. The 30’ x 20’ tattered flag was found near the World Trade Center shortly after the 9/11 tragedy by a local Shohola resident. The remains of the flag originally traveled to Greensburg, KS, a town 95% destroyed by an EF5 tornado, on the 9/11 anniversary in 2008. Volunteers stitched this special flag back together using American Flags salvaged from the Greensburg tornado. The idea then came about to stitch the flag back to its original format, eventually eliminating the patches. It was only appropriate that the use of a piece of the famed Lincoln Flag of the Pike County Historical Society be taken into consideration. The Lincoln Flag, which was stained with our 16th President’s blood at Ford’s Theater, has been a part of the Historical Society’s collections since 1954. It was determined that the Lincoln Flag would be a much welcomed addition and “…even so much as a thread…” would be happily incorporated into the 9/11 Flag. Historical Society archivists then donated a few threads that had fallen off of the Lincoln Flag to be incorporated into the 9/11 flag. A Stitching Ceremony will be held at The Columns Museum today, February 12, Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. MCEEC Winter Bog Walk On Sunday, February 13th, join a Monroe County Environmental Education Center (MCEEC) naturalist for a 2½-hour walk in the Tannersville Cranberry Bog! This northern boreal bog is protected by The Nature Conservancy and a National Natural Landmark. It’s interesting to explore in winter because the bog mat freezes and the snow cover offers the opportunity to see shrubs, trees and pitcher plants in their winter environment. The snow also makes it possible to see animal tracks from year-round residents such as bobcats, snowshoe hare, and coyote. Access to the interior of the bog is substantial along a 1650’ floating boardwalk, making for spectacular photo opportunities. February 13 – A naturalist from the Monroe County Environmental Education Center will lead a Winter Bog Walk through the Tannersville Cranberry Bog at 1:00pm. The bog is special as it is a northern boreal bog, which is very unique for this part of the country. Protected by The Nature Conservancy, the Tannersville bog is a National Natural Landmark. The bog

becomes even more interesting to explore in winter as the bog mat freezes and the ground becomes snow-covered, with opportunities to see shrubs, trees and even pitcher plants in their winter environment. The snow also makes it possible to see animal tracks from year-round residents such as bobcats, snowshoe hare and coyote. Access to the interior of the bog is substantial along a 1650’ “floating” boardwalk, making for spectacular photo opportunities. PennDOT Advice for Wintry Weather With snow and gusting wind in the forecast, PennDOT asks drivers to slow down, stay alert, and use caution on roadways! Snow squalls can strike without warning, covering roads with snow or causing whiteouts. Be ready to adjust your speed and your travel plans, use common sense, and watch for developing weather. Most winter crashes result from speeding, tailgating, and careless lane changes. Rapid movements cause loss of control, so act and react slowly.

PennDOT offers this advice: • • • • • • • • •

Slow down gradually, and drive at a safe, consistent speed. Turn on your headlights. Stay in your lane. Increase your following distance. Stay alert, look as far ahead as possible, and be patient. Reduce in-car distractions; give your full attention to driving. Use the defroster and wipers. Keep windows and mirrors free of snow and ice. During whiteouts, come to a complete stop only when you can safely get as far off the road as possible. • Do not stop in the flow of traffic; this may create a chain-reaction collision. • Do not pass a slow-moving vehicle, or accelerate for a vehicle that is following you too closely. • Always buckle up, and never drink and drive. In addition to these visiting migrants, the region is also proud of a growing, breeding population of resident eagles. This excursion will focus on migration patterns and possibly observe some early breeding rituals by resident nesting pairs. NPS announces DWGNRA Project The National Park Service (NPS) announces rehabilitation work at the George W. Childs Recreation Site, known as Childs Park, within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (DWGNRA). The restoration project requires closure of this popular site to protect the safety of visitors, and to allow contractors to complete the work efficiently. “Childs Park is a tremendous asset to Delaware Water Gap and to the National Park system. It represents how natural beauty in the form of impressive waterfalls and hemlock ravines can be enhanced and enjoyed by visitors through well-placed hiking trails and picnicking facilities,” says Superintendent John J. Donahue. “We have a real opportunity to provide better facilities and to rejuvenate the original landscape that George W. Childs wanted the people of Pennsylvania to enjoy. I look forward to rededicating the site soon.” Preservation work includes the woolen mill ruins and Civilian Conservation Corps structures, which detail George William Childs’ vision, in 1892, of creating trails for the public. The NPS will repair trails, bridges, parking, and historic/ cultural sites. Measures to maintain and preserve the forest and streamside vegetation will be implemented. The NPS cares for special places saved by the American people, so that all may experience our heritage, and asks that site closures be respected. Meanwhile, back at the park, Civil War re-enactors provide a glimpse into life in the days when Abraham Lincoln was our President; children’s activities will abound. February 20 – Everyone can learn how to ice fish when the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission presents a free Family Ice Fishing Clinic at Nescopeck State Park from 10:00am to 1:00pm. This program is designed for families new to ice fishing and will include instruction on equipment, basic skills and safety. The program is free and fishing licenses will not be required. All equipment and materials will be provided. Children (ages 8 and up) must be accompanied by a parent or mentor to participate.
