As festival season descends on the Pocono Northeast, bringing with it arts, antiques, baby farm animals and delicious local foods, the hills are alive with the sound of music—Irish music at the Shawnee Celtic Festival in the southern part of the region. For two days over Memorial Day weekend, the green of spring brings with it the green of the Emerald Isles at Shawnee Mountain for the annual Shawnee Celtic Festival. The festival features non-stop Celtic music on three stages, a bagpipers’ parade, Celtic jam, working sheep dogs, Irish step dancers and a variety of Celtic arts and crafts and food vendors. Musical acts include Rathkeltair, which features three veteran musicians from England, Northern Ireland and the US, Canadian CelticRock band Hadrian’s Wall, the straight-from-Ireland Irish Lads and Burning more. Burning Bridget Cleary, one of the hottest young acts on the Bridget Celtic and folk music circuits dubbed “the Allman Brothers of Celtic Cleary fiddle bands, only prettier,” is one of the musical highlights of the festival. Children’s events include a Celtic magic show, Leprechaun juggler, water balloon toss and Celtic farm petting zoo. Performances and events occur throughout both days of the festival. Most people take colorful clothing for granted. Few of us ponder the fact that the palette of hues we enjoy today was impossible to create in the 1800s, when wearing green could kill you. Back then green dye was made from arsenic, and many lost their lives when the poison was absorbed by their skin. At the Eckley Miners’ Village Fashion Show on May 20th from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. you’ll learn fashion lore as you witness a lavish runway show presenting styles preferred by fashionable men and women of the 19th century. Victorian skirts were made with six yards of fabric and were usually sewn from dark material to hide dirt. Mourning garb, which was entirely black, including undergarments, featured black crepe veils that irritated widows’ eyes so much that they could barely see months after removing the veils. The Civil War brought a change in fashion. As women followed their husbands off to battle, camping close to the soldiers’ quarters, they retreated from elaborate hoop skirts, favoring simpler styles. Eckley Miners’ Village featured its own Spartan style. For church, men often dusted off the same coats they donned for working in the coalmines. Founded in 1854, Eckley was an anthracite mining community, which in 1971 became a living museum, an entire town preserved as a historical site. Farm Animal Frolic A visit to Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm is a journey to yesteryear when family farms fed the nation. As a National Historical Site, Quiet Valley preserves an important piece of Pennsylvania’s agricultural heritage. Reenacting the lives of the German family who lived and worked the farm from the 1760s to 1913, today’s Quiet Valley residents dress in period clothing and conduct farm tours and special events that are both educational and fun. For two weekends in May, when the farm reawakens with new life, Quiet Valley presents one of its most popular programs—Farm Animal Frolic—which gives children the opportunity to see and touch baby animals. Watch chicks hatching from their eggs, feel the velvety fur of baby bunnies. Cuddle new lambs, thick with soft, woolly fleece, watch frisky baby goats play. You’ll see adorable piglets, Quiet Valley’s cow, Bossie, Belgian and Clydesdale workhorses and more. The afternoon also features pony rides, great country food and a hay jump. Besides being fun, Farm Animal Frolic helps children understand and appreciate human beings’ reliance on animals. Children who witness baby animals in their natural environment may grow up to behave more humanely towards these precious beings that give their lives to feed and sustain humans. Farm Animal Frolic takes place May 19, 20, 26 and 27. The Frolic runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for children age three to 12.
