Close to 300 people came out to Cape May Convention Hall to see Harry S Truman’s grandson, actor Clifton Truman Daniel, portray his grandfather in the humorous and stirring stage production of “Give ‘Em Hell, Harry!” on Sunday, Oct. 10. The performance included a Q&A afterwards. Shown here, Mr. Daniel, left, and Dr. Myles Martel, chair Cape May MAC’s Lessons of History Team, during the Q&A portion of the program, which featured insights from Mr. Daniel about his famous grandfather’s personal and professional life.

Candlelight tradition

(CONTINUED FROM PAGE 8) about their plans for that day. In retrospect, it’s nice to know most of what people were doing involved what Cape May MAC had to offer. Then, one lady turned to Cheryl and I and asked, “So what are you doing today?” “Getting married,” Cheryl replied. The reactions were priceless because she said it in a deadpan manner.

Our ceremony took place at the Cape Island Baptist Church (officiated by our Lutheran minister at the time from Ocean City with both our almost all-Catholic families and friends in attendance), and the reception on the porch at the Merion Inn. What was neat was that our guests could all walk right from the beautiful church ceremony to the reception site, just a blockand-a-half away. I surprised Cheryl and my two new stepchildren (although I had been part of their lives for nine years by then, so I was kind of their stepdad anyway) with McDevitt, Harry Schmidt, Karen Van VarickMcGuire.

a carriage ride around the block to the Merion Inn. With the wedding being just a week before Christmas, the church was adorned with greens and the entire town was decked out for Christmas. Guests still talk about how memorable and unique the wedding was, especially the Merion Inn’s famous potato cup!

So, it’s almost upon us, Christmas 2021. Thankfully, we will be returning to our full slate of Cape May MAC tours of private homes, inns, B&Bs, as well as our Physick House Museum and trolley tours— including a really cool new daytime, first person interpretive tour titled “All That Glitters.” The script is marvelous. Cheryl and I will be working the Dec. 4 Candlelight Tour, going on one of the next two ourselves, and working the other — our newest Christmas Candlelight tradition.
