Snack time
It was the Victorians who fi rst invented afternoon tea. This was because the evening meal was eaten later than in previous periods and people found they needed a light meal in the late afternoon. The evening meal was eaten around 8 or even 9 p.m.

Don’t drink the water
By 1860, England’s Thames River was full of the raw fecal matter and sewage that was being dumped into the water on a daily basis. Since the river was also the main source of drinking water for the city, people died by the thousands from dysentery, cholera, and typhoid. Once again, a great excuse to opt for beer.

Creepy Victorian food
Victorians ate virtually every part of an animal, supping on delicacies likes brains and hearts. Another famous dish from the Victorian era was turtle soup. The turtle was prized above all for its green jelly-like fat which was used to fl avor the soup made from the long-boiled stringy fl esh of the animal.
