Quackery: Toxic and shocking?
Toxic arsenic was widely consumed by Victorians. Women believed it had qualities which made skin appear younger, and so it was a major ingredient in many cosmetics – whereas men would consume arsenic pills as a way of stimulating their libido. Unsurprisingly, these products caused extreme sickness and led to many fatalities before people understood the true power of the substance. Also in practice was electrotherapy, or shock therapy, which was used to treat multiple medical problems, including gout, muscle pain, rheumatism (arthritis), and liver problems. What was the complicated, medical and scientific explanation behind this? This so-called “technology” was about as intricate as trying to scare the hiccups out of someone by yelling “Boo!” Essentially, the hope was that applying electricity would shock the problem out of the patient.

The Victorian era took fashion to new heights, and widths. Women wore crinoline dresses that stretched as wide as 18 feet across in the 1850s. And by the 1870s, the puffy bustle was all the rage.

In a time when one in four patients died after surgery, you were very lucky in Victorian times to have a good doctor with a clean operating theatre. There was no anesthesia, no painkillers for after, and no electric equipment to reduce the duration of an operation. Victorian surgery wasn’t just creepy, it was outright horrific.

HARRIET TUBMAN’S LIFE & WORK IN CAPE MAY
Harriet Tubman lived in Cape May in the early 1850s, working to help fund her missions to guide enslaved people to freedom. After her initial journeys conducting freedom seekers to Canada, she returned to the states and earned money working in hotels and for private families as a cook. From Cape May, in the fall of 1852, she went back once more to Maryland, and brought away nine more fugitives. The New Jersey Historical Commission says she spent two other summers in Cape May.
Cape May played a pivotal role in the fight to end slavery. Several historic figures critical to the fight against slavery spent their summers in Cape May. The Harriet Tubman Museum building is located on a block that anti-slavery activists called home in Cape May. Lafayette Street and Franklin Street became a center of abolitionist activity centered around three important buildings developed in 1846.

COLONIAL HOUSE Museum
A hidden treasure in the heart of Cape May City
Located next to Cape May City Hall, the Colonial House (c 1730) was originally a tavern and the family home of Revolutionary War Patriot Memucan Hughes. The front room features a tavern room. Other rooms open to the public in this unsung survivor from Cape Island’s very beginning depict a colonial era cooking/eating room. A fine example of vernacular architecture and one of only a few remaining colonial homes open to the public in Cape May County.

Wednesday through Saturday 1-4pm
Saturdays: “The Historian is In”
Free - Open to the Public

Cape May Presbyterian Church
You are welcome to worship with us any Sunday, in person, on Facebook Live, or on Youtube at your leisure. Our summer worship includes an 8:30am service, with traditional music, at the Decatur St. beach. Park in the church lot and walk the block and a half to the ocean and you will find us! Please bring your own seating. Those who prefer jazz, a later hour, and air conditioning are invited to join us at 11am for Celebration Worship in our beautiful sanctuary.
You’ll want to be here on August 20th! First, come to church (see above). Then, beat inflation at our Back to School Fair. We will be giving away all kinds of school supplies from noon to 2pm. Bring the kids and let them each fill up a backpack with paper, pens, erasers, markers, and more! Then come back at 3 pm and relax in our beautiful, air-conditioned, and acoustically amazing sanctuary, for an hour of jazz with E. Shawn Qaissaunee. Your $10 donation supports our church’s mission and the local music scene, as part of our monthly Jazz Vespers series.
Our sanctuary is now open for prayer or quiet time from 9-11am on Mondays and Wednesdays. A deacon will be available if you have questions, but will not intrude if you want your solitude in our sacred space.
We are accepting applications for vendors for our Fall Festival, Nov. 11. Our site fees are low and we have the perfect location for a pre-holiday event. Email our office for more information and an application form.
You can find us on any time on our website, Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube, or by sending us an email or giving us a call. Our beach service is livestreamed on Facebook and available afterwards on YouTube.
As always, we are praying for you, and wishing you a wonderful summer!
