FROM THE CEO Smiles Galore and More in Store…
A
glorious opening weekend saw Falls Creek resort showing off the very best it has to offer (well…for this time of the year at least), with an impressive seven lifts turning, the village full ski in-ski out and magnificent sunshine on the first Saturday of the season. Demonstrating how fickle Mother Nature can be, pre-frozen snow and fog washed off some of the glory from opening weekend, however, thanks to the great work of the grooming team and their early preparations and snow farming, we are still in pretty good shape for so early in the season. In fact, relative to the 30 year snow depth average, we are tracking along ok… The unpredictability of the weather reminds me of the need to also be prepared for what the alps can throw at you and the Norwegian saying that “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes.” It’s also a good segue into understanding the importance of having the right equipment.
Aside from comfy boots and which type of planks you choose to ride, how you protect yourself from the elements is vitally important. I’ve written on this topic in previous editions and I’m going to reiterate the need to ensure that staying warm to the core is critical. Nothing ruins a great trip to the snow, then being cold and miserable because you didn’t dress for the conditions. So, most importantly, layer up. Advice on how many layers varies from three to four and can be a bit of trial and error before you find what works for you. My personal choice on really cold days is four, as you can always cool down, or reduce layers if needed (or vent, but more on that later). Essentially, never, I repeat - never wear cotton as a base layer in cold weather. The French call cotton ‘the fabric of death,’ as it can absorb up to 27 times its weight in water and transfers heat away from the body 25 times faster than air… so ditch the cotton, try synthetic or wool base layers. Next, you’ll want another close fitting, slightly thicker mid layer. I tend to double up with a wool or synthetic layer that includes a thin hood, which keeps my head warm under my helmet and doubles
up as buff when the wind starts to bite. For additional warmth, add on top a down, synthetic or poly fleece – it doesn’t really matter, but these layers keep your core well regulated. Finally, the shell or outer-wear, is the first line of defence from wind and snow. There are many different options and ratings that apply to outer fabrics in order to keep out water and wind. There’s Gore-Tex, or similar sandwich membrane processes that are as close to bulletproof as you can get! But, being the ‘best’ these items are generally the most expensive garments. However, outerwear of this type is also the most durable and long lasting. Other ratings where the label says DWR, which stands for ‘durable water repellent’ is a garment made via a process that bakes into the fabric a waterproof barrier. It works great, though needs retreatment every few years, which can be done quite easily in the cleaning process. The other most common rating system uses the numbers 5k-10k up to 20K indicating how waterproof the jacket is. These ratings refer to a process which tests how much water one square inch of fabric can hold without leaking in a 24 hour period. Note: Anything below 5k isn’t waterproof,

FROM THE CEO only water resistant. If possible, make sure that final layer has ‘venting.’ Pit zips or the like that give you the ability to regulate your body heat. Many ski/ boarding pants offer venting on the legs. I find these the most effective way to off-load heat… especially when sitting on a chair lift or taking a break. Last tip, ‘Texas Gore-Tex’ also known as denim, is NOT appropriate to ski/board in, even if ‘waterproofed.’ Of course, if you’ve been contemplating an upgrade for your gear, the many great retail outlets throughout the village and in the valley have extensive collections offering the broadest range of essential equipment and given the variety, are also able to cater to all budgets. Check them out here: http://www. fallscreek.com.au/retail. Foodie Tip of the Week: Someplace Else Bar & Grill has become a favourite on opening weekend. Great quality burgers and real value for money. The panko crumbed mushrooms with gremolata, shaved parmesan and pesto kewpie are a huge hit with my boys as an entrée. Who doesn’t love it when it’s not a challenge to get kids to eat ‘veggies’? •

FROM THE GM We are many, but we are one…
P
eople often ask me what the Lift Company does over the summer? “Nadda, nothing, zip, zero, zilch” I answer, “we lock up and take a long holiday.” I wish! What do we do? Hard to imagine, I know, but the reality is we’re probably as busy in summer as we are in winter. Our permanent staff barely take a break. Once the lifts stop turning, the maintenance team are already prepping them for the following season. It literally takes all summer to check, service and repair and re-commission every lift to ensure they are safe and reliable for the next season. Our vehicle maintenance team similarly do the same with our snow grooming fleet and snowmobiles and the slope maintenance crew set about servicing all 240 of our snowmaking machines and supporting systems. This year they replaced several hundred meters of aging underground pipe, added a few new snowmaking lances, fixed some tricky slope drainage issues and completed much needed summer grooming of the Ys and Maze areas.
Travelling to Falls Creek this winter? Leave the worries of hiring and fitting chains, coping with anti-freeze and icy roads behind you!
Let’s get that lift open – there are skiers waiting and good snow to be had!!!. GM Sharon Raguse with the scissors, supported by Resort Board member Jo Shannon and proudly backed up by Pete the Snowdragon. Pic – Courtesy Falls Creek Ski Lifts
Planning for each season begins long before the last season finished. Much of what we need to do relies on importing heavy equipment and parts from overseas and timing is critical. Same for our retail outlets where some lines of hard-wear and apparel need to be ordered 18 months in advance. Miss the boat and we really do… miss the actual boat! Then there’s the preparation for recruiting, training, clothing and housing of over 300 seasonal employees. Plus the cooperation and coordination that’s required to excite and fuel that snow obsession among our guests through marketing and PR. It’s like

preparing for the Olympics… only this event runs for four months! …and that’s just the lift company. Multiply that now by the services provided by Resort Management in maintaining XC ski trails, roads, and essential services. Add to that the roles played by Police, CFA, SES, Ambulance Victoria, the Medical Centre, the ATS transport and the numerous accommodation and dining venues throughout this glorious village and you’re starting to get some insight into how complex running a ski resort can be. Last weekend, Falls Creek Resort opened on over 45cm of early Winter snow fall, on top of 30 000 cubic meters of manmade snow to deliver the strongest start to a season in almost 20 years! As corny as it sounds, it really does take an army of passionate and committed people working together to bring to life this amazing mountain experience and we love it! Enjoy yourselves this week! • Sharon Raguse, GM Falls Creek Ski Lifts

DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA DWA Resort Services
A
service that enables independence, inclusion and accessibility.
Many regulars and visitors to Falls Creek would be more than aware of Disabled Wintersport Australia’s (DWA) facilitated camps program. They would see large groups of volunteer guides and disabled members most weekends arriving at the bottom of the Halley’s Comet chairlift and enjoying a wonderful time on snow. These camps, that run out of our wonderful ‘accessible accommodation’ facility at Howman’s Gap, are only one part of what we do. DWA also have our Resort Services Program (RSP) which supports members wishing to independently visit our Alpine Resorts. The DWA Resort Services Program operates at all five of the large Australian ski resorts and here at Falls Creek is coordinated by Pete Hull. The Resort Services Program aims to support DWA members wishing to visit our Alpine Resorts with family, friends or on their own. Helping to address the challenges presented by disabilities of all kinds, the role of the RSP Coordinator is to enable access to equipment, guides, adaptive ski instructors and accessible accommodation and facilities required to overcome various challenges that disability can present to those wanting to enjoy snowsports. The fantastic thing about the Resort Services Program is that those with a disability can enjoy the thrill of snowsports equally with their friends or family in an inclusive manner. Provided with appropriate adaptive equipment, guide support and skilled instructions, all of a sudden the person with a disability is sliding down slopes, riding chairlifts and
hooting and hollering alongside their ablebodied friends and family. For the person with a disability, it can mean heading back to the snow for a week with mates, participating in the University ski trip with your peers or actively holidaying with the rest of the family. These words from a mother who enjoyed a first-time family ski trip last year with their young son with Cerebral Palsy sums up beautifully the goal of the DWA Resort Services Program…. “You may or may not realise the impact you guys have made to our lives in what you do is massive. There is not one active holiday we have been able to do as a family that is this inclusive and allows parents like us to also have an enjoyable holiday. We are eternally grateful.” If you would like to be part of Resort Services as a guide email Pete Hull at phull@disabledwintersport.com.au to find out about training and upcoming guiding opportunities. If you would like more information about DWA and our Resort Services Program, or donate to support our work, head to www.disabledwintersport. com.au. • Pete Hull

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS ‘It’s Still Quite Early!’
W
ith the hype and fun of the Queen’s Birthday Opening weekend surely over and we seem to settle in to the rhythm of the season, we can remind ourselves that it is still quite early. Especially because there has been a bit of rain, so it’s nice to think “oh well we usually don’t have that much snow this time of year anyway.” For some of us, we are still at school, still working very hard or just don’t have access to the snow much at the moment. If that is the case, you might like to think about the options. This week I’m going to talk about what we can all do in the meantime to ensure that we ‘hit the ground running’ or maybe better ‘hit the snow skiing…!’
Many of us have goals that we want to succeed in this winter. Now you don’t have to be an elite athlete to set goals, actually a study I read said that people who set goals in life are 80% more likely to be more successful. For example if your aim in to complete the 21km Birkebeiner after having done five years in the joey, then that’s a good goal. Or perhaps you’ve done three full 42km Hoppets already and want to hit a certain time, maybe under two and a half hours? That’s quite positive. Or podium at Victorian Junior championships. This one is probably my best suggestion yet - ‘ski the whole paralyser hill without stopping once!’ If these appealed to you, or you already have your own ambitions for the season, then this week I’m going to tell you how to reach them. ‘Fitspo’ It is definitely a smart thing to start having (if you haven’t already) a weekly exercise routine into your daily life. This will mean you firstly hopefully won’t get injured in any way on the snow, and secondly, will

be feeling fitter and therefore enjoy Cross Country skiing more this season (and reach your goals). With the fundamental concept of the sport being based around fitness, to start with, you can simply pick up the running, cycling, swimming, rowing etc. Even join the local football club, anything to build base fitness. National Team skiers from around the world do these types of training as well. Trying to implement at least a couple of these aerobic exercises into your week will actually work wonders. ‘Case study’ For example, this year my dad wants to go back to completing the 21km Birkie in good shape. He has done it before but had to go back to the Joey for a couple of years due to knee surgery. I’ve written him a little weekly program. I wrote him a bit of a training program, twice a week he goes to the gym where he rides the bike for 30minutes followed by some simple weights. Twice a week I get him on the ski erg (which he has at home) doing 20minutes with a one minute intensity rise every 5mins. To finish with, because he is building up the knee strength still, he goes to the beach to do a short water running/ swimming session, water skipping, jumping and kicking. I’ve made him sound quite good here, hopefully he is actually doing this stuff at home. This is a great example

‘What is Roller-skiing?’ If you are really keen to get those skispecific muscles working before you go skiing, a great recommendation is rollerskiing. Many of you will be familiar with the training method. I am a long time member of the club and if you aren’t familiar with the term “roller-skiing” you might be familiar with ‘roller skates,’ ‘skiing on the road’ or ‘street skis.’ This is basically cross country skiing for pavement/road type surfaces and goes a long way to preparing the body for skiing. Just search it on youtube to see what it’s about. If you want to buy some, visit Discoverxcski.com and check out the ‘summer’ section.

he Mount Beauty and District Community Band have certainly earned the ‘community’ tag in their title. Not only do all its members reside in the Kiewa or Ovens Valley, but the Band has a long term commitment to performing at local events and functions. In recent years these events have included, Australia Day, Carols by Candlelight, Remembrance Day, Seniors Week and the Mount Beauty Music Festival. Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Winter 2019 Edition TWO
EARLY START FOR CFA For Everyone’s Benefit
T
he lead up to the 2019 snow season, accompanied by some heavy snowfalls, meant that many people had to kick into gear a little earlier than expected. This was not the case for CFA however, as prevention and preparedness is always at the forefront when it comes to community safety. In the two weeks prior to the Queen’s Birthday Opening weekend, CFA’s preseason was busy with a fire safety session for all new Falls Creek Ski Lifts(FCSL) towies, and meetings with Falls Creek Resort Management (FCRM), FCSL, the combined Alpine Municipal Building Surveyor and other community members. CFA Alpine Commander James Wong, returning for his second winter season at Falls Creek, had the opportunity to present a fire safety presentation at the Falls Creek Stakeholder’s Briefing night on Tuesday 04 June. The CFA key focus for winter 2019 is: •
Essential service measures compliance and updated fire safety plans;
•
Management of fire safety and detection equipment (to reduce or eliminate the number of false alarms);
•
Adopting a hydrant (ie. assisting to clear the hydrant outside your place, in the event of snow build up which can delay operational response);
•
Operational response enhancement with the Quick Response Vehicles;
•
Promotion of warden training and premise led evacuations;

ongratulations to Dr Mark Zagorski who has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his service to medicine as a Rural General Practitioner. Mark's OAM was announced as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in June 2019. Mark has served the communities of the Upper Kiewa and Falls Creek for nearly 40 years. Over that time he has helped countless patients at all stages of their lives. His peerless emergency skills have literally saved many lives over that time. Mark has a passion for teaching and multiple generations of medical students and doctors have benefitted from his teaching and wisdom over the years. Mark has also been active in many other areas including Rotary, Ski Patrol, the Rural Doctor's Association and DisPlan. His energy is boundless, as evidenced by his having completed nearly every Kangaroo Hoppett since its inception. The award of OAM to Dr Zagorski is a fitting tribute to a much loved and inspirational Rural Doctor. On behalf of this community, this paper extends warm congratulations to Mark. This recognition is well deserved. •

ne of the problems associated with deadlines is the fact that we tend to rush. And when we do rush, things seem to go ‘pear-shaped!’ Rushing to get Edition One out for Queen’s Birthday Weekend is tough enough, then add into the mix about 60cm of fresh snow to be promoted and talked about and the extra services that have to be brought on-line to look after a greater number of expected guests – and yes, things can go wrong. And so it was with the Editor, rushing to get a promised article out for Queen’s Birthday weekend. It is therefore with humility that your editor apologises to Kim McDonald and Brendan Edmondson for mistakes that appeared in last week’s article ‘Our Community and Its People.’ Kim has been in the real estate industry in this town for 23 years and has been operating Alpine Valley Real Estate since 2001. During this time, Kim has personally sold over 500 properties and the business has sold over 800 properties in the local area. Brendan has studied through the Australian College of Real Estate Training with Jane Moore to gain his Agents Representatives qualification and continues to train with Jane on a weekly basis to further his skills and understanding of the industry. Therefore, in taking ownership of the mistakes, your editor apologises to those concerned. The one bit your editor didn’t mess up was the bit where I wished Kim and Brendan all the best for the future. •

his paper would like to welcome to the world and in particular to this community little Oliver James Howard. Oliver was born on Tuesday 28th May at 3:04pm and weighed in at 4.07Kg. Oliver is the happy son of Andge Maiuto and Zac Howard who have been residents of Falls Creek for some time. Andge is a personal trainer who also works for the ski lift co and Zac is a full time Snowsports Instructor. Prior to the bub arriving, Andge and Zac were also doing Mountain Adventure Tours around the world, but we’ll wait and see when Oliver is ready to take on the tours. As Andge said in her Email “we are so in love!!” Congratulations and best wishes from the community. •

uski Kitchen is new to the Falls Creek dining district in 2019 featuring grass roots modern ASIAN Cuisine. Lead by Head Chef ‘Daniel VP’ - born and raised in Bangkok – and who moved to Australia when he was ten years of age. The flavours and techniques from his upbringing are distinct while the incorporation of western and European techniques presents a menu that will appeal to a broad pallet. A feature on the menu is ‘Chu Chi’ a prawn and Chicken Curry relish, Pad Thai and a Pork Belly with Asian Greens will also impress. The restaurant/kitchen will be serving Asahi Black and Dry draft beer on tap and offers a nice selection of wines at a modest price. This move will see Huski deliver a streetside alfresco bar with warm food, great wines, warm ambience (and plenty of heating). With this fresh funky vibe and street eats feel, Huski is sure to be a favourite for many this season. Huski is located in Sitzmark Street, between Silver Ski and Astra. Ph: 03 5758 3863. •

ommunity Consultation. Saturday 15th June, 3pm. Big Hill Mountain Bike Park carpark.
As you may already be aware, Mount Beauty scored big time with the recent Pick My Project initiative with the Pebble Beach path extension and TMB’s trailhead redevelopment receiving the highest number of votes in the region and therefore approximately $200k per project in funding. As part of these projects, the shared path along the West Kiewa River will be extended an extra 900m beyond Pebble Beach for joggers, walkers, and cyclists to enjoy, and Big Hill Mountain Bike Park will see an exciting revamp to the car park area with upgraded facilities, a new bike wash, and a new trailhead. Plans are well underway for the trailhead redevelopment and Team Mount Beauty would like to invite the community to attend a consultation to view the plans in detail and provide feedback for the organising committee.
This is your opportunity to come along and have your say. Constructive criticism will definitely be welcomed but it is also our hope to see as many members there as possible to show their support on the day. The more positive feedback TMB get, the more it will help to grease the wheels when we go back to the Shire. The plans shown here are only a teaser as the designs for the trailhead and the bike wash will also be presented during the consultation session. This Saturday at 3pm at the Big Hill MTB park. We hope to see you all there but if you can’t make it and have something to say please email your comments through to info@tmb.org.au •

o maximise your appreciation of our resort, a visit to the museum is a must. Open from 12noon until 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday, the museum is fantastic. There are many relics and some great films from many days back and it presents a fantastic insight into how our village grew.
AA
along and actually understand just how good our Museum and Historical Society is. Much work has gone into this community asset, from way back when Lyn Gibbs saved and stored heaps of early memorabilia. So note this one in your dairy. Thursday 20th, from 3pm at the Falls Creek Museum. And if you don’t know where that is – shame on you!
many of the Historical Society members are flat out working their ‘normal’ jobs. Therefore we are looking for volunteers who would love the opportunity to spend some time staffing the museum to keep it open so that people can take advantage of the fabulous collection of material and videos. As an opportunity to learn about our resort and its history, volunteering in the museum is gold! Phone 03 5758 1200 if you are interested.
