THE FANTASTIC McKAYOS The Only Snow MTB Race
B
ack on Saturday 5th of October Falls Creek celebrated the 5th year of the marquee McKayos mountain bike race with a record 335 riders competing. Billed as a snow dirt and road enduro, the race takes mountain bikers from 1760m above sea level in the Falls Creek ski fields to the shores of Lake Guy in Bogong Village at 660m. Riders traversed 15km for a total descent of 1100m through a challenging course that included a mass start on snow, a race through the alpine village streets and slippery single-track mountain bike trails. Warm temperatures in the lead up to the event meant that the spectacular mass start was made all the more challenging with large stretches of dirt separating the snowsections. World Cup rider Chris Panozzo was first across the line in a thrilling dash for the finish between himself and Ben McIlroy (2017 and 2018 winner). Panozzo has been a podium placer in each of the past four years of the event, finally earning the ultimate prize by the smallest of margins – one second in front of McIlroy and less than a minute in front of Mount Beauty teenager Jonah Cosgriff in third place. In the women’s category, Beechworth local Lia Ladbrook fought off a similarly close result to finish 20 seconds in front of 2018 winner Goele Schmitz. Last year’s second placed Bec Feltrin took third place honours for a third year straight of podium finishes. Falls Creek Resort Management Marketing Director, Jo Prothero, said the race was enjoyed by all, including herself.
Just bloody crazy – and this is only the start – still more snow and 15km to go. 355 starters for the 2019 McKayos. Pic – Matt Rousu
“This year was my first year of racing and it was an experience like no other. Seeing 350 riders on the start line was confronting but such an amazing experience once the starter’s gun was off and it was time to race.”
Coming MTB Events 2nd & 3rd November - Team Mount Beauty hosts Round Two of the Victorian Enduro Tour on the Big Hill Mountain Bike Park. Visit tmb.org.au
“Falls Creek is ready to move into its summer mountain biking season in late November and what better way to do this than with a mountain bike race on the last weekend of the ski season. We have so many unique experiences here and McKayos is the perfect example of what a spectacular place Falls Creek is to visit.”
This should be a good weekend as Round One at Nail Cairn Hill last weekend saw over 200 riders take part. 22nd to 24th November - Falls Creek and Blue Dirt Mountain Biking host Ignition, the ‘party weekend of the year’ to mark the official opening of the mountain bike season at Falls Creek. Go to www.ignitionmtb.com.au for more detail
As the riders clattered over the finish line and took in a deep breath, it was time to get rid of the helmet and gloves and enjoy a fantastic egg and bacon roll – all lovingly gourmet prepared by members of the Rotary Club of Mount Beauty – who do this work as part of their regular fund-raising efforts. Then it was on to the bus and back up to Falls for the Presos and after-party.
1st & 2nd February 2020 - Falls Creek will host Round Three of the Victorian Enduro Tour – which was a real hoot last year – surrounded by a touch of snow. Google Victorian Enduro Tour for more details – or go to: fallscreek.com.au/events. •

to finish Year 12 and get out alive, do as much riding as I can and stay fit. It’s probably not the best year to be going into my first EWS because Year 12 takes up such a massive chunk of my time. MR: Have you got any plans for further studies such as University, or depending on how these two EWS events go, would you like to chance it and try to become a professional racer? Ben: I haven’t really thought too much about it. Becoming a professional mountain biker would be pretty sick but you sort of do have to have another profession once you come out the other side. THE AUSTRALIAN ALPS WALKING TRACK Our Journey
H
ow often do you see a couple of local lads, ages 15 and 16, decide to take on the major challenge of walking the Australian Alps Walking Track. This journey is daunting enough for fullyfledged experienced adults – let alone a couple of local teenagers. This is their story. Earlier this year, my friend Ash and I decided to walk the Australian Alpine Walking Track, a 665km walk from Gippsland to the ACT which took us 28 days through March and April to finish. The track starts in the old gold mining town called Walhalla, and immediately starts climbing to the top of Mt Baw Baw. On the very first day, it rained all day and turned into snow as we gained more altitude. We cooked in a small cave to escape the weather and went to sleep before 4 o’clock (that’s 4 in the arvo). The next few days provided an equal amount of challenges as it continued snowing persistently, and our spirits were slowly getting dampened. It wasn’t until the fourth day that we were truly able to relax, as we camped by a small creek (Black River) in a deep valley, and we were able to dry out all of our clothes and gear. The next few days went a little

more smoothly as the sun was shining almost every day. The only problem we encountered was the lack of water. We had to filter water from a puddle so that we could stay hydrated. On the sixth day we made it to the first tree-less summit, and the first good views on the hike as we finally made it into some of the taller mountains closer to home. We tackled the Crosscut saw and the Viking in the next few days - both are remote mountains that provide excellent views in all directions because they are the tallest and the rockiest mountains around on the Gippsland side of the Great Divide. On the tenth day we made it to Mt. Hotham and the 200km mark, and we were joined by some of our friends who decided to walk part of the track with us. This point was a milestone for us because we now knew that we would be able to finish the walk, and all the stress of the last few challenging days left us as we knew we were going to make it. We enjoyed a few slower paced days in our local mountains after our friends left us, to replenish the lost energy from the past effort. At the halfway mark (Taylors Crossing) we ate an enormous amount of fresh food (at a meeting with the parents) that we’d been deprived of in our dehydrated meals. It was a short walk from there to the cliff ledge at Morass Creek where we spent the night. We soon crossed the source of the Murray River and into New South Wales. At this stage, we ran out of water, but luckily, before it got dark, we found a cave that had a small creek flowing through it. We heard dingoes howling every night and saw
Are you planning a family holiday? Now is the time to have your vehicle serviced and checked prior to your next trip.
Upon our arrival at the Namadgi Visitor Centre, we were presented with certificates, along with a beanie each and an Australian Alps Track Marker, with mine now mounted on my bedroom door. The experience allowed us to truly challenge ourselves and gave us the chance to experience something very few people ever get to experience. “The hike is by no means easy, and no matter how much you prepare for it, it will always throw something at you that you could never expect, but it is an experience that anyone can have with a lot of determination and a taste for adventure” said Tommi.

plenty of wild horses that gave us a little bit of strife, particularly when they decided to step onto the table, steal our olive oil and damage some of our gear while we were trying to sleep. Once we made it Mt Kosciusko, it was almost all downhill for the next week, all the way to Tharwa where we concluded our walk.

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Spring 2020 Edition ONE
FALL LINES Helpful Tips As a way of improving this publication, your Ed has suggested we start putting in useful tips on several subjects that are close to the hearts of the community. It is envisaged that in each edition, we will feature a Gardening Tip; a Cycling Tip; A Fitness Tip and an Environment Tip – all designed to improve the quality of life in this community. And while many of the local businesses that support this paper will provide the tips, we also welcome tips from the community. And, to best ensure that we receive your tips, please Email them to the paper at: kencbell@bigpond.net.au – and supply your name and contact number – in case we need to clarify something.
Gardening Tip Kindly brought to you by the North Eastern Home Improvement Company. Now (mid to late October) is the time to fertilise your Camellias and Azaleas with a specific fertiliser for these acid loving plants. Talk to Bron at the Home Improvement Co on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays. •
Cycling Tip
Kindly brought to you by the team at Rocky Valley Bikes. Road Cyclists – please use your lights – both front and rear. As both riders and drivers, we understand the need for cyclists
to give themselves every opportunity to keep safe. Going in and out of shadow makes you difficult to see. Fashionable dark bike gear also makes it difficult – and a vehicle with sun onto the windscreen makes a cyclist even harder to see. Keep safe and use your lights all of the time – to give yourselves the best safety margin. •
Fitness Tip Kindly brought to you by Emily and Lee at Mountain Gym Fitness & Massage. With Summer approaching, hydration becomes even more important for the human body. As we sweat, our body tries to return to its optimal temperature. However, as this process occurs, we lose body fluid which we need to replace. Dehydration can lead to headaches, decrease in concentration, impaired motor control and decision making abilities, raised temperature and heart rate, fatigue and difficulty with other bodily functions. To avoid dehydration, try to keep an insulated re-usable water bottle available close-by, and, to keep it cooler add some frozen ice cubes. For added natural flavour, try adding a few slices of fresh lemon or lime - which also have great health benefits, too! •
Trails Tales and Tucker This program is a fascinating three kilometre walk along the Wallace’s Heritage Trail while listening to the stories of the
characters, the myths and legends and how they have shaped the Bogong High Plains. The journey takes in historical alpine huts and delves into the journeys of the Indigenous, the Bogong Moth, the graziers, tribulations of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme and the formation of Falls Creek Alpine Village. The walk concludes with a delectable lunch of tastes of the North East Victoria with stunning views across the High Plains. The Trails, Tales and Tucker initiative is a creation of the Falls Creek Historical Society and helps raise some money for the Falls Creek Museum. This summer that dates have been set at the first Sunday of each month, November to April with a couple of other important dates thrown in. These extra dates are: 29th December, 26th January, Saturday 14th Marcah and Easter Saturday. Trails, Tales and Tucker Tours may also be booked for groups of eight or more (maximum 20) for any day of the week with 48 hours notice. This would suit clubs or bus groups. Bookings are essential may be made through: www.trailstalesandtucker.com.au or www.fallscreek.com.au/events. We look forward to seeing you on Cup Weekend Sunday. •
