off a place we call home and effectively the biggest backyard imaginable.
alls Creek takes pride in the fact that it’s not just a destination to many thousands of visitors a year, it’s also a permanent community of people who are fortunate enough to also call this amazing place, home!
That backyard is nestled in an Alpine National Park, full of threatened species of flora and fauna, for which we are the custodians and advocates for ensuring its sustainability.
F
The village is spectacular when under snow. It’s idyllic. It’s a winter haven, unlike any other in Australia. It’s unique beyond compare and a destination where you get to choose your own adventure. In summer, it becomes a mountain adventure experience that offers not just respite from the ‘lowlands’ summer climate, but access to the Bogong High Plains; Australia’s highest body of water; 45kms of mountain biking trails and some of the toughest road cycling challenges outside of Europe. There’s a plethora of trails to hike – from two hours to multi day, then there are the cattleman’s mountain huts to explore and an indigenous heritage that celebrates coming together, meeting on the high plains and sharing an amazing landscape and topography. The Falls Creek community loves nothing more than sharing this with you. Showing
Whilst you are here, you will see the pets of our community, more specifically our resident pooches (the only pets allowed). The resort is extremely fortunate to enable its community to ‘extend’ its family in this way. Pets can be (are) an integral part of our family. Our resident dogs are very special. They are permitted to call Falls Creek home by exception. The requirements to facilitate having dogs in a National Park are extremely onerous and really quite a privilege. In winter, they must be on leads at all times, can only walk off lead in Lower Slalom car park, have general restrictions on where they can be walked and all poop must be disposed of in bins provided across the village to ensure appropriate disposal to protect the very sensitive ecosystem. All the Falls Creek dogs you will see when they are out walking must be on

special leads (this year these are blue with the Falls Creek logo), or if they are just sitting outside, they must be restrained from wandering and all have a unique registration specific to being an introduced species in the National Park. They are easily identified as ‘locals.’ Because you’ve had to leave your beloved family member at home, to ease the anxiety, feel free to say hi to – Joey, Ginger, Storm, Carlos, Ruby, Noah, Nikita, Bella, Lux, Balu, Kioni, Skye, Poppy, Charlie, Storm, Avi… to name just a few… they are very social puppies who love a pat… but, to be on the safe side, always ask their handler before approaching… Hopefully, to the many visiting dog owners who enjoy Falls Creek year around, by leaving your dog at home, you are helping our local community secure ‘man’s best friend’ to be a permanent and privileged part of ours. A quick segue to another favourite topic of our four legged friends… FOOD! Foodie Tip of The Week: Nelse Alpine Lodge. It’s a gem, with exposed beams, a comfy lounge and a fireplace that oozes après, pre-dinner and post dinner aperitifs’. Whilst the cocktails are divine and inspire more than just one, the dinner menu offers a tremendous selection of favourites. Our party of four started with a selection of arancini balls, a bruschetta with a mountain of buffalo mozzarella, and thick cut chips with Aioli dipping sauce. Then, our mains were of a proportion that represents true value for money. The lamb shank simply dropped off the bone, a duck ragout that disappeared without a trace, a beef cheek massaman curry where its texture rivalled that of the best pulled pork or slow cooked brisket you’ve

RACE CLUB NEWS The Busy Fun Period
I
t was a bit of a wet and windy start to the season, with Race Club starting on Saturday 29th June for our U12, U16 Junior/FIS groups, and the U8 and U10 Development Programs starting a day later on Sun 30th June. With over 200 members signed up to Race Club and with 115 kids enrolled in programs, it was an excited group of parents and athletes who gathered together at Race Club: the kids excited to get back on snow with old and new friends;
parents excited that they would get some time to themselves most days for the next two weeks! The Club starts getting into racing this week kicking off with the Junior Agility Race on Sat 6th July followed by the Rossignol Cup and Cranky Charlie on Friday 12th July it’s going to be a busy week! With Race Club’s major fundraiser for the year coming up on Sat 6th July, the Auction Committee of yours truly, Felicity Gould, Daniela Mollica & Emilie Fary has been busy visiting local and metropolitan businesses asking for donations. The response has been extremely positive with the Committee raising over $25,000.00 of donations and more coming in every hour. Race Club is again posting details of many of the donations on its Facebook and Instagram pages, which is proving popular with people being able to see what will be available to bid on come 7:30pm on Saturday 6th July.

Don’t forget to bring loads of ‘CASH’ to the auction, as it’s our favourite method of payment but we do also have our new ‘Square’ payment system up and running for those who prefer to pay with a credit card. We’re doing drinks card again as they proved to be so very popular with both the punters and our fantastic Volunteers acting as bar staff for the night. RACE CLUB NEWS must be rolling in money… because skiing and snowboarding is sometimes deemed an expensive sport. But the truth is that the Club runs on the smell of the proverbial oily rag. We don’t get any government funding, or have any private sponsorship deals and the money for the coaching programs is paid directly to the Ski Lift company who employ the coaches, apart from a $110 Admin fee the Lift Company pays the Club per child. We make 7.2% profit on the sale of the Race Club Jackets and our membership fees are laughably low at $80 for the first adult member, $60 for the first child member and $45 for every subsequent child. We refund the $300 working levy when parents complete a volunteer duty. That is why every single donation to the auction is valuable and gratefully received. And it is why we try and raise around $30,000.00 in donations every year to convert into cash to keep the Club running for the next 12 months.
Everyone is welcome at the Auction; you don’t have to be a Race Club member to come along. It’s a great way to meet people if you are new to the mountain.

DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA Guide Training Camp June 29-30
E
very year DWA plan and hold weekend training clinics for new and prospective guides. Last weekend’s DWA clinic was held and had twelve Level 1 Guides (new guides) and seven Level 2 Guides (existing guides advancing to level 2) with six Trainers. The clinics provide a diverse platform to start a guiding future with DWA. Experienced trainers provide motivation and support as they explain and go through the fundamental concepts of adaptive Snowsports, disciplines and the adaptive equipment used to assist a participant on the snow from tethers, snow wings, snow gliders, outriggers to mono and bi sit-ski, just to mention a few. Accommodation was at the DWA Alpine Accessible Accommodation (AAA) located at Howman’s Gap and allowed the DWA
guides to rest before and after the clinic. On Saturday morning after a quick debrief, DWA Adaptive equipment was transported to Falls Creek with the new and existing guides. The weather was not kind with rain on Saturday but preparation and planning helped to make the day successful and enjoyable. An important factor that allows some people with a disabilities access to the alpine environment and ski slopes is specialised adaptive equipment. This is equipment that has been designed to maximise the mobility of the skier/rider. Innovations such as sit-skis and outriggers allow people with disabilities the opportunity of being on the snow. With six sit-skis on the mountain and other groups practicing snowboarding, stand-up skiing, with tethers and outriggers, the DWA presence around the mountain is getting known. Guides are also required to understand how a sit-ski feels and works for a DWA participant who is inside the sit-ski. To do this all trainees will ride the sit ski down a run and then they will be loaded onto a chair-lift and unloaded from the chair-

lift under the supervision of two guides. As with all training clinics, Falls Creek Ski lift crews were involved to give the DWA guides a hand with the loading and unloading and without their cooperation and continuing support the operation of sit-skis on the mountain would not be possible. Both crews worked extremely well as a team to deliver a safe and enjoyable onsnow experience for all DWA Members. For DWA safety is a major priority and it covers all aspects related to sharing the mountain and safety for the public, the guides, the participants and all ski lift staff, therefore safety is a major part of DWA training and emphasised repeatedly at different stages throughout all clinics. More information on DWA and other weekend and midweek clinics available can be obtained from the following. COMFORTABLE SKIING Why Cave Men Never Skied
A
s we’ve evolved over the millennia, humans are asking their bodies to do far more than they ever have. Gymnastics, ballet, unicycle hockey, chess boxing and bobsleigh (where your bones don’t break ‘they shatter’) to name a few. It’s important to remember that skiing and ski boots, are not a natural environment for the foot. Nor is it a natural activity or position for your body to be in – humans did not evolve to go skiing and so we need that extra support. Hence the need for a honking, great, stiff, plastic boot to connect skier to the ski – something cave men didn’t have access to. Skiing recruits the extended use of different muscle groups that everyday life does not. This is why after lunch the muscles feel depleted, fatigued and another hot chocolate is far more appealing. Technique and fitness come into play in this, but boots also have a huge impact on stance on your skis and whether the correct muscles are activating.
walk and run. Dial it up to doing 60km/ hr or more on skis and those forces are exponentially increased and acting upon the foot in a vastly different way. This is not what the foot was designed to do! That foot needs some serious support. A ski podiatrist (what better way to describe the role?) is also the best person to see when there are some of the more serious niggles like a Moreton’s neuroma, plantar fasciitis, excessive pronation or circulation issues. The management of these in a ski boot is often more effective than in a regular shoe. Pain from boot or body issue can sometimes be difficult to determine from the initial assessment. A recent client wasn’t sure if their boot pain was caused by a previous leg injury and subsequent muscle issues, or if the boot was unsuitable to their body and biomechanics. A few quick functional muscle tests and it was clear it wasn’t the body, it was the boot. Fast, simple and effective. Move on.
You’ve gotta love it. The science of skiing and boot fitting has moved on! Pic – Courtesy Ortho Ski.
It’s also worth seeing a ski podiatrist if coming back from injury to ensure the ski or snowboard equipment is correctly aligned and not going to exacerbate any underlying issues. Or if there are issues that have never quite been figured out. Or just to get ski boots fitted right… • Krista Sturday, Ski Podiatrist at Ortho Ski.
So often people confuse the role of the boot and the ski. The choice of boot for a skier or boarder is influenced far more by biomechanics and enthusiasm levels (your boot can’t tell how good the technique is, but it can tell how much energy is being pushed into it) than the type of skiing. Ski choice is far more dependent on the snow conditions and where the skiing will be done. So, it’s a good idea to let someone who knows biomechanics fit a ski boot or introduce the perfect match, as it were.

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS International Guests
T
his year, like every year, the crosscountry community at Falls Creek is blessed with the presence of many international guests. Skiers from foreign lands coming to the Bogong High Plains in search of snow, friends, kangaroos, love, the list goes on. This year one particular guest is Norwegian/Australian Ellen Søhol Lie. She was born in Australia and subsequently holds an Australian Passport. She lives in Oslo; Norway and this year is down at Falls Creek for the season trying to qualify for the Australian Ski Team and compete at major international events in the future. Let’s see what she has to say. Side note: As the journo, I have taken Ellen’s answers but corrected the English occasionally just for the purpose of clarity. TWIFC: “Hey Ellen, what is your relationship with Australia like?”
TWIFC: “Ah so you were once a classic backpacking tourist?” EL: “Yes, I guess so. In 2014, I went backpacking with a friend. We did Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and down from Cairns. My favourite place back then was Byron Bay because I loved to chill out on the beach. Now I don’t like it as much, just chilling on the beach.” TWIFC: “What is your favourite thing about Australia now?” EL: “The people, the environment, the culture. I find people are more open here in Australia. Norwegians can seem a bit arrogant or shy sometimes before you get to meet them.” TWIFC: “When did you start skiing?”
EL: “I was born here actually, in Sydney in
•
1994. I lived here until I was four years old before I moved back to Norway with my parents. Since then I have been back a few times to see friends and to go backpacking after I finished school.”
•
Pairing Après Share Plates with local Australian wines
Aperitivo Happy Hour every Wednesday 4pm - 6pm
EL: “I skied as soon as I could walk. I actually started here at Falls Creek! I don’t remember much from back then, but we have lots of videos of me skiing around in the Nordic bowl back in the mid-90s. Mum and Dad were very active members of the Melbourne Nordic Ski Club. When we lived here, we drove to Falls Creek from Sydney many times. My family has always been very into skiing. My parents have told me that they used to have a lot of fun here at Falls Creek back in the day and being Norwegians, they could get their yearly dose of snow.”
“I am starting racing kind of seriously from the ages 12-16 before contracting mononucleosis (like glandular fever) and after that I didn’t have the motivation to come back. I then became a ski coach actually for a few years at the ski club in Oslo called Fossum.” TWIFC: “What is your goal with skiing?” EL: “The Olympics 2022. During the winter 2018 when I was writing my bachelor’s degree evaluations of a company business admin degree, I found out that I wasn’t ready for the office life and I wanted to set an ambitious goal for myself. Snow Report and Race calendar This past week has been tricky with snow. The groomer has been doing good work packing down the 18cm of snow we had last week to strengthen the base. Writing this on Tuesday, the inner trails and up to Watchbed are definitely skiable. The Birkebeiner Classic is still scheduled to happen this Sunday the 7th of July, that being a 2.5/5/10km classic style event beginning at 10:30am in the Nordic Bowl on Sunday morning. Registration is at Windy Corner before the race or register online on the Birkebeiner website. For questions, contact Anne Bellingham on 0427 006 246.

FORGET THE FUSS Take The Bus
T
here are lots and lots of reasons that people decide to visit Falls Creek. The absolute beauty of the Bogong High Plains in summer is a major reason – but that is another beautiful story much worth investigating. Falls Creek as a winter holiday destination has plenty going for it. Not only does it have heaps of wonderful skiing (and boarding) terrain, it has a fabulous integration of ski slopes, the unique ski in – ski out facility – from your accommodation to the slopes and back again, and what we term a range of progression perfect slopes. That means that from the beginners’ areas, it is not a challenge to find the next step up to a slightly more challenging slope to then go to an even more challenging slope. People find it easy to get around and enjoy their experience. And if you’re not sure, Snowsports School offer lessons – a part of which is to help you navigate back to your lodge after skiing. Falls Creek offers skiing and boarding opportunities that you can do for eight hours a day – keeping fit - breathing in crystal clean air – and when you do stop for a rest, you can enjoy some of the best scenery this country has to offer. The next question is: How do we get to enjoy this wonderful place. Well Falls Creek is serviced by a very good alpine road. But like any alpine road it has its issues. And when you are travelling here for a well-earned holiday do you really want to tackle the issues that sometimes we are faced with on the road. Snow – lots of it – enough to block the road. Black Ice – you can’t see it and when you do feel it, it is usually too late! Falling trees, vermin deer – big ones, plus our local kangaroos and wombats. All of these issues can absolutely ruin a holiday.
Even then, if you feel confident enough to drive up the road, you still have to deal with the issues of anti-freeze for the radiator, Alpine Mix diesel for all diesel vehicles (diesel fuel clags up in cold conditions), wheel chains (and how to fit them) and then getting your car parked in Falls Creek. And if you don’t have chains in your vehicle, there is every chance you will be turned around at the Resort Entry Ticket Box at Howman’s Gap and sent the 26km back to Mount Beauty to get chains. You know, there is an easier way. And the secret is in the heading for this article. Forget the Fuss – Take the Bus. Fallon’s Falls Creek Coaches have been here for years. And before them we had the Pyle family – and these operators have untold years of experience in getting our visitors to and from the snow safely – in the comfort of a well-appointed warm, clean dry coach – under the stewardship of a driver who has done the Hazardous Area Driver training – and who has been travelling up and down the road all season – and probably for the last umpteen years. Falls Creek Coach Service offers regular services from Melbourne, (airport and rail), from Albury (airport and rail) and also a regular service up and down the hill – all designed to fit in with the rail and plane services that you are likely to take to get here. Another option could be to book a private transfer for yourself and your family in either of their luxury vehicles including the new 16 seat Mercedes that arrived recently. If you do decide to drive here for your holiday, the smart move would be to park your car in the secure carpark at the Falls Creek Coach Service depot in Tawonga South and take the bus from here. The Park and Ride Service offered by Falls Creek Coaches is a dream. During the busier part of the winter a coach leaves for Falls Creek about

every two hours. You can simply unload your gear undercover at the bus depot, park your car in the secure carpark (with options for undercover storage) and then your holiday starts as you board the coach. Yes there are lots of reasons to take the base to Falls Creek. Safety, comfort, ease, no fuss - and remember, you are on holidays. Enjoy every moment of the time. Go to: www. fallscreekcoachservice.com.au for bookings, prices and timetables. And, as added incentive to leave the car in the car park, the cost of not carrying wheel chains can be quite expensive as this notice from Victorian Police shows. Disobey information on a road access sign (Fail to Cary Snow Chains) Road Rule 97(1). Penalty: $161.00. Fail to Obey No Entry sign (Fail to fit snow chains when directed or sign posted) Road Rule 100. Penalty $322.00 & 3 Demerit points. Alpine Resorts (Management) Regulations. Failing to Carry of Fit Chains. Penalty: $644.00. That little exercise of not carrying chains cold cost you as much as $1127.00. But, there is an easier way – as outlined above. •

AUSTRALIAN WATTLE
T
here’s a wattle blooming every day, somewhere in our land, From the misty alpine passes to the burning desert sand. From the Eastern coastal fringes where the wattle grows the best, To the lonely rugged gorges of the Kimberley out West. The wattle is our symbol, and a hundred years before Henry Lawson wrote of the shearers’ strikes he saw--“We’ll make the tyrants feel the sting o’ those that they would throttle, They needn’t say the fault is ours if blood should stain the wattle.” Of all the native trees the wattle wins the test, For it blooms in golden trusses and the wild birds make their nest.
Snug and safe from mankind and aerial marauders. Sprigs of wattle went along when Aussies left for war, To the poppy-fields of Flanders, beneath the cannons’ roar. The Diggers kept the wattle close --- those brave and hardened men, And the wattle was their talisman, to get back home again. Australians love the wattle, and the mighty river gums, That grow up on the Murray, and no matter what fate comes, No matter where we travel, no matter where we roam It’s the Wattle and the Redgum that draw our hearts back home. PROPERTY OF THE WEEK Sun Valley Mansions Apartment 6
freezers. High vaulted ceilings give a homely feel to the property and sunlight streams in on all sides.
leeping 10, this luxurious apartment is situated on Schuss Street in a peaceful setting. It contains four bedrooms, two bathrooms (including en suite with spa bath) and a third shower and basin in the upstairs master bedroom.
Underneath the building is a large basement area which houses the hydronic boiler for the apartment and provides a large storage space for an owner to store their possessions.

Sun Valley has just completed the works required for the issuing of a brand new long lease. The apartment is virtually free standing and access is right to the door by snow cat in winter and by car during summer months. Internally the property has all modern conveniences, including laundry facilities. On the ground floor are situated two double bedrooms and a four-bunk room, as well as two bathrooms. Upstairs there is a huge lounge area with open gas log fire and beautiful bespoke dining and coffee tables constructed from Australian hardwood, making it an ideal place for family living and entertaining guests. There is a forth double bedroom on this level with en suite shower and sliding doors accessing the wide balcony, which also connects with the lounge and features a BBQ and spectacular views over Summit, International and north to Spion Kopje and Mount Bogong. The kitchen area is well appointed and also features two very large stainless fridge
Sun Valley is one of the highest properties at Falls Creek and is ski-in ski-out. Furthermore, a shuttle bus stops very close to the apartment. There are plenty of fine dining restaurants nearby including Summit Ridge directly opposite and Milch Café just down the road. This property lends itself to sole occupation if so desired, as there is no restrictive management agreement and the owner is free to choose whether to occupy, rent out or both. The flat has been managed for many years by Mountain Multiservice, Falls Creek’s largest management company and easily achieves good rental. The body corporate rates are very reasonable. Internal dimensions are approximately 120sqm, not including the basement. This is a unique opportunity to purchase a rare high quality apartment at a very reasonable price of $650,000. Please contact Ted Weeks at Falls Creek Real Estate on 0456 022 211 to arrange an inspection. •
