FRIDAY 12TH JULY 2019
RACE CLUB NEWS The Auction
and could not put on the event without people to buy the donations!
aturday 6 July saw the Race Club hold our annual major fundraiser for the year, with the Auction held in the QT Boardroom. With loud and silent auctions being enthusiastically embraced by attendees, everyone had an excellent night. Sadly we missed our Club brains trust and life member Noelene Lee who was wasn’t able to attend, but we gave it a good hard nudge anyway!
Thank you to Barry Iddles once again for providing his delicious food which keep us all from teetering too far over the boozy edge, and to Life Member Steve Lee for once again acting as our Auctioneer for the night and doing a masterful job at corralling the crowd when they got rowdy and distracted by their own gossip!
S
Some honourable mentions must go to: • Noelene Lee managing to bid (via son Steve) for six items despite her absence! • Bob Morgan taking out top place as this year’s biggest bidder with a total take home of seven auction items. • My husband Ronan Pringle and I combining our efforts as a couple to match Bob’s total with seven auction items (one of which is quite sparkly!). • Steve Lee surprising the crowd and auctioning from both ends of the room in an effort to get people to stop talking! Thank you to all 120 people who attended on the night. We so appreciate your support
And lastly, thank you to the following donors who provided products or vouchers to the club to auction off. We could not do this without you and your support is greatly appreciated. The other Race Club event that happened on Saturday the 7th was the Junior Agility Series, this being the first racing event for the season. While it was a proper race, the focus was less on competition and more on the kids focusing on their skills and getting used to the race environment. It also gave some kids their first taste of medal metal for the season. The race results are as follows…

FROM THE CEO Fingers Crossed for Freshies
W
ith the current snow depth below the 30 year average I thought I’d look back at the last 30 years of ski patrol snow depth records for a little short term perspective. Then, to get an historic context, go a little further back to the 1930s when the SEC used to take measurements on the high plains and thereby help to determine how regular an occurrence these miserly starts to the season have been. In the last five years, 2015 and 2017 both looked alarmingly like the current chart. But as we know, 2017 was a ripper with skiing in resort and across the high plains occurring well into November! Going back 30 years, one third of the seasons have started with less than average falls. With 2015, 2006, 2001, 1997 and 1991 being the most challenging. If you’re interested in what a detailed history of snowfall looks like at Falls Creek, head to the Falls Creek Museum (look for the flags when they’re open), located just next to Halley’s Comet lift in Slalom Plaza. It is a fantastic little gem, packed, literally to and hanging from the rafters, with detailed displays of the resort history. It’s worth a trip, there are interactive video’s, cabinets packed with memorabilia,
Just a quick look at the averages – and fingers crossed, we’ll have a good one. Chart – Courtesy Falls Creek Ski Patrol
an Olympians display and 70 plus years of Falls Creeks heritage. It’s staffed by local volunteers, and if you’re lucky, Noelene Lee, matriarch of the Lee family and Attunga Lodge (just celebrated 50 years of operating), will be on duty. Noels is a living treasure and walking historical almanac of Falls Creek. Got a question, she’ll have the answer, or know someone who does! Another of the treasures, is a donation from The Spargo Family (Falls Creek Hotel fame) and is a chart of SEC recordings for snow fall. It graphically represents the period from 1936 to 1990 where up to 120 snow poles based 100 feet apart, placed on the Rocky Valley gauging line from Wallace’s Hut to Rocky Valley Camp, measured every single snow fall event. What it demonstrates is that
miserly starts aren’t a new phenomenon, but a part of the unpredictability of the alps. The charts go all the way up to 1990, where our current source of recordings is calibrated to. There have been some absolute cracker years, 1964 and 1981 are the clear standouts. Catch any local and they’ll recount their stories of having to handshovel tunnels to access lodges and the daily digging out of bull wheels in the village bowl. But the real certainty from the charts is that predicting how much snow will fall and when, has the same odds as pretty much any random walk theory. It’s unpredictable! So, as I watch the ever changing predictions for the next 15 days, I can say with some certainty, it will snow. How much? Well in my opinion, it’s never enough, regardless of

FROM THE CEO where you ski, more is always better… With any luck, a taste of some freshies and a few powder stashes will be found in wind drifts and gullies (ie. Corkscrew, just below Monkey Bar and for the more adventurous St. Elmo’s Slide over in Ruined Castle never disappoints after a good dumping). Fingers, eyes, arms and legs crossed. Foodie Tip of the Week: Falls Creek Hotel is another of the resort’s well known and historic establishments. Famous for the contribution its founders made to the resort and their renowned hospitality, ‘Happy Harvey Hour’ (Tues & Thurs) and its deck and restaurant views of the Summit. Any day is a great day to have lunch up there. If you’re lucky enough to be staying there, ‘dinner, bed and breakfast’ is included with the views. However, on sunny days its après heaven on the deck and just as inviting inside with the views for anyone looking for a bite to eat. The lunch menu, available from 12-2pm hits the spot. TIPS FOR SNOW DRIVING NEVER Use Cruise Control- You’ll need extra vigilance and extra control when it comes to driving in the snow. Not only do you need to adjust your speed more frequently when driving in the snow, you’ll also need much more control over steering, even if you’re driving on a straight road. Never use cruise control when driving in the snow. Ever.

DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA Last Weekend’s DSR Camp
D
isability Sport and Recreation (DSR) held their winter camp at Falls Creek last weekend with DWA hosting the camp and supplying on and off snow support and guides. All up our local DWA team hosted 28 people including eight participants (aged between 8 and 17), 13 volunteer Guides and seven carers/support staff. The new snow entrance ramp to Halley’s Comet assisted greatly with an easier access (for DWA participants) and less disruption to the public and Ski School queue meant loading became much more efficient. On Saturday and Sunday there were four sit skis on the mountain with the
DSR participants smiling and laughing. Mother Nature and Falls Creek managed to produce the snow and the DSR Camp were here to utilise it. Alexander on a sit-ski could be seen coming off multiple chair rides a sit-ski with Jeff and Stephanie giving a thumbs up at every unload. DSR participants are all children who, like able-bodied skiers and snowboarders, must adapt to the terrain, weather and equipment they ride on, never complaining - just enjoying the moment. Elise last year gave DWA a quote “I was extremely sporty previously, before my injury and now I am able to find other things I can do again – that is really amazing. Today I just I loved it” Elise continued that theme from last year by progressing from a bi-ski to a new mono ski (donated by a DWA patron) with DWA Guides tethering, blocking and turn shape assistance down Mouse trap. As the afternoon unfolded we all realised that this

was only the start of a wondrous journey for Elise. The other participants, four sit-skiers, two snow boarders and three skiers were continually moving around the mountain with the assistance from DWA Guides and enjoying the day. DWA assist with adaptive on-snow involvement with experienced guides and planned improvement for all participants in all camps throughout the winter season. The camps are continually growing with 10 more to be completed this season and more are expected and planned for next winter. Falls Creek Resort management with DWA also provide week day support services to all DWA members. The World Health Organization states that 15% of the world’s population experiences some form of disability. We must all remember - as DSR states “Health is a basic human right. Everything we do is to help Victorians with disability live happier, more active lives. Let’s all get behind them and do it!”

COMFORTABLE SKIING My Boots Are Too Big
forward to start a turn. Shin bang baby, it will stop you in your carving tracks.
hey say you shouldn’t try so hard to fit in, but with ski boots it can be worth the effort to get them to fit right. It sounds like a ruse, but boots that are too big can lead to more pain in the foot muscles and toes than one that are too tight.
Technique issues that arise from a boot that’s too big can be seen in A-framing (where the knees almost touch when turning), leaning back and difficulty getting clean edges.
T
Too big means a size or more too big. This may only be 10mm too big, but it can make a huge difference, given that ski boots are fitted by the millimetre. People mostly end up in boots that are too large because they have one issue that is difficult to accommodate in the right size, so they’re just shoved into a bucket – it’s the easy way out. Their issue might be a high and bony instep, bunions or big calves. One of the noticeable signs that a boot is too big is when the skier is able to stand straight up in their boot. Rolling the whole foot around inside the boot is another really clear sign, as is sliding around in the boot and excessive moving at the top of the boot.
Going up a size can be seen as an easy fix to accommodate a difficult or problematic foot and take the “fit it in” approach rather than actually fitting the boot correctly. This leaves the rest of the boot being too big and the above issues ensue. Quite often these big boots are difficult, if not impossible, to modify enough to make the skier comfortable. Avoiding ending up in the wrong size is as easy as having a full biomechanical assessment done before buying a new boot. This captures any issues and allows for a plan to be made to accommodate issues and the correct boot chosen from the beginning.
A sneakier sign that a boot is too big is when the ankles hurt. This isn’t necessarily from too much constant pressure on the ankle bones, it’s often from the ankle moving around too much in the heel pockets and banging the bones on the side of the boot. It can feel like someone’s taken a hammer to your ankle after a day of sliding.
The correct boot is one which will allow the right modifications to be made. So next time you’re going skiing, if you’re swimming in your boots, just remember that a bucket is not the answer. • Krista Sturday, Ski Podiatrist at Ortho Ski
*Conditions apply
The same can happen with sore toes – the foot sliding back and forth can cause bruised toes and lost nails all because the foot is hitting the end. But one of the most painful signs of a boot that’s too big is pain at the top of the shins. Banging back and forth every time you lean

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS Returning Home from Alaska
I
n this week’s This Week article (I always wanted to say that) we talk to another seasoned local Casey Wright. Some you may already know Casey, as she has been coming to Falls Creek to ski for the last… years. Let’s just say, since she was very little. She has just arrived back from four years skiing at an American College! Literally just come back, and I’m sure she has lots of stories and interesting things for us to hear about! I caught up with Casey this week to have a yarn.
TWIFC: “Hello Casey, welcome back to Australia, how are you mentally?” CASEY: “Mentally…? Umm, well I think I am still good. Who knows, everyone says Alaskan’s are a bit of a special breed, but I don’t think they are too different to Australian’s. Putting that aside, I am really good. I am stoked to be back home and back in ‘winter’ at Falls. Fingers crossed the snow arrives soon!” TWIFC: “What College did you go to and what was your team?” CASEY: “I went to UAA, or the University of Alaska Anchorage. There I represented the Seawolves. I’m still not quite sure what a Seawolf is, but thankfully I didn’t need to change my wardrobe too much as my team colours were green and gold. Man, I love those colours…!” TWIFC: “Why did you want to go and ski in America?” CASEY: “When I was moving from the
junior age category to U23/ seniors, I was really looking for an opportunity to help me take my skiing to the next level. After sitting down and writing a list of what I needed for this to happen, skiing for an American College Team ticked all of the boxes. After writing to a number of college coaches, I initially got little to no replies and I gave up on the idea of skiing there. However, the stars aligned and a spot became available for me in Alaska. So, I packed my ski bag and a duffle and migrated north.” TWIFC: “Would you recommend it to young skiers?” CASEY: “Absolutely! It was a fantastic experience and one that I would do over again if I got the opportunity. In saying that it’s not easy, but if you really want to do it, you will not be disappointed.” TWIFC: “What was the highlight of your skiing whilst being over in Alaska?” CASEY: “One of my fondest highlights was actually my last race as a Seawolf. After finally finding some form about half way through last season (2018/2019 Northern Winter), I managed to qualify for the National Championships (only three males and females are selected from each team). During my freshman year (first year) I had set myself of the goal of achieving ‘All American’ status in skiing. This is awarded to the top 10 finishes at the NCAA National Championships. So, in my final race as a Seawolf, I finished 10th in the 5km Skate at the National Champs in Stowe, Vermont. It was a very sweet note to end my college career on.” TWIFC: “What was your highlight in general over there?” CASEY: “While there were more highlights that I can even comprehend, getting introduced to the world of backcountry

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS skiing has been a night highlight. It has allowed me to combine my love of the mountains, with skiing ad getting my adrenaline fix.” TWIFC: “Did you have cool team mates and where were they from?” CASEY: “I was a part of an awesome team. Skiing on the college circuit works a little different to the rest of the skiing world. While we compete individually, we are also racing for team points. The better your finishing place, the more points you get. On top of this, Alpine skiing and XC skiing compete as one team. So, my team was actually made up of both Alpine and XC skiers. We came from all over the place. From the US side of things, I had team mates from Minnesota, Colorado, California, Vermont and Alaska. We also had a bunch of internationals, like myself. People came from Estonia, Latvia, Switzerland, France, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Germany, Italy, and bunch from Canada. It was a fantastic group of people to share my experience of college, skiing and living in Alaska with.”
up, well at least that I was aware of, but I did get charged by my fair share of moose. Male moose are quite aggressive during the rutt (mating season during fall, September and October), and mothers are very protective of their babies (during the spring and summer, May to August). In terms of Alaska wildlife, my coolest encounter was with a wild mountain goat, who walked right up to touching distance while I was hiking. They like their solitude, so just seeing one is usually a big highlight. Getting that close to one, is almost unheard of.”

Snow Report The snow has begun to fall and in great numbers! That means in the short term (this weekend, whilst the groomers will be heading out managing the influx, the snow will be heavy and slow going. For the long term though, by Sunday, most trails around the bowl, Sun Valley and out to Watchbed area should be prepared and would be great skiing so be sure to get ready! For up to date grooming reports, check out the Falls Creek website in ‘snow report.’ •

TWIFC: “How good is Alaska?” CASEY: “The fact that you are asking this question, I think provides the answer. Mountains, check. Amazing skiing from your front door, check. The opportunity to ski in 90cm of Champaign powder that fell the night before, check. 24hrs of sunlight, check (in Summer). More beautiful views that you can ever imagine, check. Mountains, check again! Honestly, I loved my time there and Alaska will always have a special place in my heart. If you ever get the opportunity, go!”

New for 2019 - skiers representing schools are being encouraged to participate in both the “Tour” and the Relay events. The Snowball Escape the cold with a hot night out at the Midwinter Snowball! Back for its fourth year, the Midwinter Snowball is a black tie cocktail style fundraising event which will be held on July 27th at the Mount Beauty Community Centre. The evening features live music, canapes and a bar which of course showcases some quality bubbly. “It’s a really great opportunity to gather a group of friends, dress up and have a fun night out,” said President Jodi Mann. “The Snowball is a little more relaxed than a traditional ball, as there are no set tables and no need to bring a partner - you can lounge around with friends, chat at the

In actual fact, Craig and Cheryl Willey have handed over the baton to new owners, Dale and Danelle Neave. Cheryl said after almost 18 years of service to the local community, it was time for a young whipper snapper to take over. The catalyst for change was Craig breaking his back a few years ago, meaning he was ready to step back from the physical work; however if you need a tow, you can still expect to have Craig come to the rescue as he is continuing the towing side of the business and working for RACV, now known as Mount Beauty Towing. The Willeys first opened Mount Beauty Auto Repairs in September 2001 in the workshop where Craig’s dad originally ran his own mechanics in Nelse Street next to Mount Beauty Smash Repairs - which coincidentally enough is where Dale has spent the past 18 months working alongside his in-laws; Danelle’s father and brother, Ken and Corey Edmondson. You could say the story has come full circle, with Dale now taking on Mount Beauty

when I was about 12 I started showing more interest in racing. I went to a few of the Victorian Enduro events but after a couple of years that series kind of fell apart. I then stared racing the national series. MR: How many national events have you raced? Ben: My first national year in 2015. I raced three events, Toowoomba, Adelaide, and Canberra and placed 3rd overall for the series. In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. BOGONG
I
n the windswept Southern Mountains out by Bogong’s brow
Is a land that’s never felt the rip of tractor nor of plough The flowers and native grasses stretch from sky to sky Unmarred by Man’s destruction – farming passed it by. For the raging winter blizzards stayed the axe and chain And spared the Bogong High Plains from the awful bloody pain Of the clearing and the torching and the weeds and salt and dust Of the foreign crops a-growing, filled with mites and rust. And then the spring-time melts the snows, and the swollen brooks are gushing Into creeks and mighty rivers – to the Murray they go rushing Daisies are a carpet, Black Cockies screech on by
The parrokeets are dashing through the crystal of the sky. The seasons keep on rolling, but the High Plains stay the same Through the scorching summer days to the icy winter rain People seldom visit, unless it’s peace they seek And lovers swear their wedding vows out by Watchbed Creek. Now mortals come and go in the twinkling of an eye It only takes a moment beneath the
mountain sky But the snow gums grow forever and the granite weathers slow In the freezing winter winds, beneath the ice and snow. Yes the cycle keeps on turning, yet the land remains the same Timeless and eternal, impossible to maim And when I’ve shed this mortal coil and left the din and row Just leave me for the wild things, out by Bogong’s brow. •
