FROM THE CEO Nothing but Blue skies…

ell, after 11 days straight… to be honest I’m a bit over blue skies. I love them immediately after a huge dump of snow and will take those ‘bluebird mornings’ any day… but seriously, I’ve gone through two (30ml) tubes of sunblock already! Given spring has sprung, and we enter into the gradual decline in the snow pack, the ever optimist in me looks to the weather forecast for that one, just one last burst of snow before the season starts winding down. The last couple of seasons, the snow gods have blessed us with a September to remember… and it’s not uncommon to get a cheeky solid top up early/mid-September. ie. 1991, 1992, 1996, 2003, 2004, 2017 (Blizzard of Oz 3.0), 2018… And tickety-boo… my wish looks to be coming true… with nearly all the weather pontificators forecasting a nice little 20, maybe 30 and up to 50cm top up happening – hopefully as you are reading this. Heading to the stats sheet, diligently

compiled by Falls Creek Ski Patrol and maintained by Rob ‘Des’ Decker, so far this year, statistically speaking it’s been a relatively decent, above average season. The resort has recorded its 5th highest 24 hour snow accumulation with 46cm dumped on August 8/9th, plus above average consecutive snow day events so far this century, the 13th highest total average accumulation and 15th best season maximum (162cm) in the last 30 years. Then finally, in terms of accumulated snow, the 10th best year in the last 30! Having been spoiled with two ripper seasons in 2017 and 2018, by comparison, this year has been better than average. So, spring skiing here we come, oh yeah and unlike some other mountains, our declared snow season was ALWAYS going through until October 6th… no hoo-hah, just business as usual. So, oodles of time to get some more turns in and, to bring up friends and introduce them to the awesomeness that is spring skiing. This time of year, after a season of competing, the best athletes in the industry close out their seasons vying for podiums and PB’s. The penultimate one for many are the National Interschool Championships

Having come fresh off the back of Ski and Snowboard Australia’s Children’s Championship series hosted here at Falls this last week, all our up and coming champions are certainly in great form to represent the mountain proudly and to reach new personal bests. Good luck to all. This weekend in Falls Creek however, all eyes will be focused on the Summit Masters, up in the Village Bowl. It’s a spectacle, especially when combined with a preponderance of retro outfits in all manner of hues and vintages. The fashions, let alone the skiing should be a sight in and of itself.

Resort Entry is located at Howman’s Gap, approx. 4km before reaching Falls Creek. Day and Night passes are $56.50 on arrival per day, (or $51.50 on line). If arriving after 5pm and departing prior to midnight on the same day, entry is free. Visitors over 65 years of age receive a discount. Season Passes are available at $555 (or $475 on line). An ‘All Resorts’ permit, valid at all Victorian Snow Resorts is available for $787.00. Enquire at the Visitor Information Centre desk. WELCOME Falls Creek local Steve ‘Guru’ Weston has been ‘threatening’ locals with his vintage selection of outfits all week. Make sure you head to the Village Bowl on Saturday for the thrills and spills of the bumps skiing. It’s a great revival of a Falls Creek icon and not to be missed, but best viewed from the sidelines (Frying Pan Inn). Plus, the calamity of seeing some skiers attempt to relive former glory days and do things their bodies simply can’t quite do, makes for great entertainment. Then if Lycra is more your thing, the Masters Giant Slalom is being held on Sunday too. Foodie Tip of the Week: Milch Café Bar – breakfast, lunch and dinner… not to mention special baked treats daily. Now also with special spring deals and all day breakfast – it makes Milch a go to on the mountain. Après’ is popular and the hot apple pie cider, or espresso martinis are a great way to end a day on the slopes. Kids will love the hot chocolates in a variety of flavours and there are versions for the grownups too. For a quick lunch, personally, the soft shell tacos are a favourite, but the real treat is dinner and a magnificent selection of desserts. Chinese Ski Team You may have noticed a considerable influx on Chinese skiers in the last week or so. It turns out that a group of dedicated young athletes are staying at the Falls Creek Country Club and we were able to get a photo and some details last Friday. The team interpreter has provided the following information. 1. There’re 39 athletes in total, most of them are born between 1998 and 2003. 2. They have never tried skiing or xc before until last year, and most of them are from the south part of China where it’s barely snow.

As you know, China will hold the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, so to fulfil our goal - to participate in all events, the national decision-maker decided to transfer some athletes from summer sport to winter sport. 5. After the physical test, almost 200 athletes were chosen to train as xc skiers, some of them start training from 2018 February while some of them start from 2018 November. 6. The coaches we hired are from Finland and Norway. The team train/race in Europe in winter and train in China in summer. •

3. Most of them have been training as professional athletes from an early age and their original sports are rowing, kayaking, canoeing or running. 4. As a fact, we don’t have a rich xc culture and xc is not that popular in China, so we lack xc athletes as well as facilities, coaches, etc.

THE SUMMIT MASTERS Back This Weekend

he Summit Masters is a freestyle mogul event which has had a long history. It ran for 10 consecutive years from 1985 through to 1995 and inspired generations of freestyle mogul skiers. The event was the brain child of Linny Grosse, who was a Falls Creek local and Freestyle champion. Katie Steven, (who grew up in Falls while the family ran Pretty Valley Lodge) is a close friend of Linny’s and explained recently that she was the visionary behind the event and her drive was to create a world class Freestyle mogul event in Australia that was equal to or better than those in which she had competed in overseas. In the early days of Freestyle Mogul competitions, the moguls were ‘natural’ which meant that they were made simply by skiing the intended course. Each competitor needed to choose where on the course they would do their two aerial tricks which added challenge and spectacle to the

event. The Summit Masters prided itself with having the best natural mogul field in Australia, due in part to the perfect pitch, the fall line and the quantity of local mogul skiers creating it. During the Summit Masters competition, technique, speed, adherence to the fallline, two dynamic air tricks as well as the competitors own personal interpretation of The Summit run were all taken into account in judging the true mantel of Summit Master male, female and junior champion. • The shape of the event is true to its roots with natural moguls being skied in three days before. The start will launch in the traditional spot just below the Summit rock. The finish will be on the race line. • We will have five age divisions (for both male and female), an overall Male and Female winner and best retro outfit and competitor Male and Female. • Bumps Racing will all happen on the Saturday with presentations taking place in the Frying Pan after racing is completed. • Looking for Brekky. The Frying Pan will be open from 8:30am Saturday and 10am Sunday for coffee and Egg & Bacon Rolls. • Sunday will then be devoted to the GS – including the Masters with racing on Après Vous starting at 10am. Presentations will take in the Frying Pan at the completion of racing.

RACE CLUB NEWS What a Great Weekend

hat a long weekend of competitions that was! Exciting racing, friends and rivals visiting from other clubs and lots of catch up drinks! We kicked off with the Rudi Pendl Cup on Thursday 29th August. The Rudi Pendl Cup pays tribute to a much loved former member of the Falls Creek Race and Events Team with a GS course set on the Summit and fireworks after the race as a celebratory tribute to his long standing contribution to the mountain. There is nothing quite like racing on the Summit under lights. It’s a great experience. Race Clubbers young and old took part with some great results and bragging rights secured for another 12 months by the end of the night. The U8, U10 & U12’s had a fun Agility Race against our closest rival (from a distance perspective) Hotham Race Club on Friday 30 August, followed by a BBQ to fuel hungry tummies. We had a glorious blue-sky day for the event, and the kids and parents alike enjoyed it. Mt Buller turned on the sun and the bumps for the ABOM Mogul Challenge on Saturday 31st August with the action extending into a thrilling night final under new stadium lights. Britt Cox was in good form for her 14th event starting the competition back as a Junior in 2005 ultimately taking 2nd place on the podium in the Open Division and Issy Bond also taking 2nd place on the podium, but in the youth division. Well done Ladies! Thanks you to everyone who volunteered for the SSA Children’s Carnival event that

took place over three days at Falls last weekend. Falls really turned it on for our friends and rivals from Buller, Hotham, Thredbo & Perisher. The buzz around the village was that our visitors were very impressed with our racecourses, our ski-in ski-out accommodation, our cafes, bars and restaurants and how friendly everyone is. So basically - everything we love about Falls! We were extremely proud of all our Race Club Kids who competed. The courses were not easy and there was a lot of very strong competition from other clubs. Congratulations to the following athletes for making the podium. Ski Cross – U14 Lachlan Houghton 3rd Place. Wow) for their event coordination and the Groomers for preparing those beautiful race courses (as well as training courses for the Junior/FIS kids to train on at 7am in the morning while the SSA Kids Carnival was going on). It takes a huge amount of work to put on one event, let alone events of SSA Kids Carnival size three days in a row following on from the Rudi Pendle Cup last Thursday and a friendly Agility Race against Team Hotham last Friday. Well done to the Groomers and Race & Events!!

DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA Members Camp

ur Members’ Camp last weekend saw a lot of ‘firsts’ with members conquering many and varied challenges. The following is a little summary of how the team went. Grant Conquers the Mono Sit-ski. Falls Creek turned the corner into Spring last weekend as Grant prepared to move up into an independent mono sit-skier. With the perfect combination of corduroy groomers under a glorious bluebird sky, Grant’s objective was straightforward, he wanted to ski independently with his family who were due to arrive for a three-day session. After a couple of semi-assisted runs down Wombats and Drovers with Pete Hull on hand for a bit of stability and guidance it was good to see that by late morning, there was no need for Pete as Grant moved to Highway, while loading and unloading with little more than a pair of stabilising guide’s hands either side, while increasing the difficulty level by settling into intuitive skiing on Main Street and Rapunzel’s.

The next day Grant’s family had arrived and after a couple of warmups on Drovers, Grant and his family were skiing as a family again, and most importantly, Grant was skiing on his own terms. After an introduction to the principles of blocking, lift loading and general safety for Grant’s family, it was all downhill from there on in (pardon the pun)! Finally, just as we thought it couldn’t get any better, Paralympian Lincoln Budge showed up after lunch for a bit of ripping and oneon-one instruction with the Maynards. Last time we saw Grant he was tired and grinning from ear to ear and stoked for a couple more days of (as Pete Hull puts it) inclusive and independent skiing. Alexandria Alexandria (Alli) had skied once before and had enjoyed her skiing even though hearing everything was not always possible. A recent operation on Alli’s legs for alignment also made this weekend challenging. On Saturday Alli (with Fiona) conquered her leg turns and on Sunday Alli could be seen making perfect C shape turns down by Mouse Trap to the delight of the Lift Operator and her Instructor and Guides. Progression continued to Drovers and Wombats Ramble where Alli was ploughing down the small trails on the side of Wombats and into difficult terrain, all under control. When asked how she felt looking back at side stepping on Saturday

morning and snow ploughing to her final run on Sunday Alli said “just awesome: and naturally did not want to leave. Jason DWA knew the day would arrive and on Sunday it did with Jason on a Snowboard and after a long time of heel sliding on the snow board Jason managed to move to the toe side and link his turns. Sean was on hand to direct and witness the event and immediately sent a video back to the team. I am not sure who was the happiest Jason, Sean or the whole of DWA. What a first Jason. COMFORTABLE SKIING Race Fit vs Retail Fit

ver watched a downhill ski race and wondered how that racer gets such great performance and control from their boot? They achieve it by having not even millimetre of spare space in their boots because they have crammed their feet into a hole that is too small. Race boots have one point in life – to be fast. They are designed for maximum feedback and performance. They are not designed to be comfortable. They’re built to be skied for three minutes at a time at up to 130ish km/hr. They have a thick shell that is fairly uniform with extra thick walls in areas of increased force. They’re known as a plug boot. Race liners are thin and quite dense; they should be put on in the following order: place foot in liner, lace up liner, squish foot and liner in shell, buckle to the maximum tension achievable. Retail ski boots (this covers ski boots for the rest of us mere mortals that make up the remaining ski world) are designed for a balance of control and comfort. This group of boots covers alpine ski boots, alpine touring boots, beginner boots, performance boots, and whatever else you can think of. Each boot and each skier is looking for a different balance between comfort and performance. Retail boots can be super light, have extra functions such as walk modes, and relatively cushy, or even fluffy, liners. The width of these boots is between 98 and 103mm across the forefoot at a size 27.0.

Race boot liners do not mould, they are super thin – usually around 4 to 5mm. Race boot shells are an average of 8 to 9mm thick. Fitting race boots is about grinding the details of the skiers’ foot out of the inside of the shell. These boots are closer to 92 or 93mm wide inside- not enough room to fit a foot, so it’s always going to be crammed in. A good boot fitter will use a Dremel-like tool to grind out bony points on the foot to at least represent the shape of the foot if not the volume. Expanding plug boots is inaccurate and a bit of a hassle – the thickness of the plastic makes it prone to returning to its original shape. Expanding also lacks the accuracy most racers require from their boots. So next time you watch a ski racer, consider the squishy foot shape and discomfort she’s putting up with to achieve those edges. It’s always give and take with boots. •

Fitting race boots is obviously quite different. Fitting retail boots is all about creating the gross geometry needed by using the bootfitter’s ‘go-to’ activity – the expansion. Once this shape is made, the liner is typically heated up and does its best to mould to the foot shape of the wearer. Most retail liners are heat mouldable to a degree and do an okay job of moulding to the foot in question.

ine students from three different schools across NE Victoria recently undertook what could be termed ‘the trip of a young life-time’ travelling to Nyikina Country in the Kimberly. My name is Grace Walkley and I have just spent 18 days in this amazing Kimberley region courtesy of the Outdoor School (Bogong Campus) as an extension of the ‘Future Makers’ program. A group of nine girls including myself and our two teachers flew to Broome on the 4th of August before coming back just recently on the 21st. Whilst we were in the Kimberley we spent a week on country at Mt Anderson Station and at Gee Gully with the Nyikina and Mangala people. We sat, listened and learnt so much about Nyikina culture and language with the elders and other locals. We listened to them as they told us their stories passionately, taking us to sites from

creation and dreamtime stories. In all of this rich culture and beauty comes some of the relevant issues they and we as a nation are facing. Many of these issues are receiving little to no exposure or publicity. Most people in Australia have heard of both Gina Rinehart and the Fitzroy River. If you haven’t, Gina Rinehart is one of Australia’s richest women, and the Fitzroy possibly one of the bigger rivers in northern Australia known for its huge discharge. This river has an average discharge of 5,900 gigalitres when flooded. However average isn’t a reliable or relevant term due to climate change and other remaining factors and therefore shouldn’t be used in proposals or research. Gina and her company, Hancock Prospecting, have proposed to create a Fitzroy irrigation scheme. This would be detrimental to the river and our continent. Australia currently without this scheme is an extremely dry continent and along with climate change has so little fresh water. This proposed future for the Fitzroy would be taking out 300 billion litres of water - water that is essential in saving the human race, and reversing the damage climate change is rapidly impinging on our ONLY earth. earth do what it has been doing for billions of years or reduce our already limited fresh water supply for a patch of grass to feed the cows that are then exported to a different continent? LIGHT THE NIGHT $18,000 Plus Raised

he Falls Creek community has turned out once again in a unified show of support for Australians suffering from Leukaemia. Leukaemia is the general name given to a group of cancers that develop in the bone marrow. Leukaemia originates in developing blood cells that have undergone a malignant change. This means that they multiply in an uncontrolled way and do not mature properly, leaving them unable to function as they should. Both adults and children can develop leukaemia but certain types are more common in different age groups. What is Light the Night? Light the Night is the Leukaemia Foundation’s beautiful evening lantern walk, where Australians come together and transform the darkness into a sea of glowing light to give hope to all those impacted by blood cancer. Lantern holders can also help raise vital funds to support families living with blood cancer and towards investment into lifechanging research. There are three coloured lanterns – each with a special significance. Gold is to remember loved ones lost to blood cancer. White is for your own blood cancer journey. Blue is to show community support for all those affected. Since 2014, Falls Creek Resort Management has hosted a unique snow-

based take on the Leukaemia Foundation’s series of ‘Light the Night’ walks. In the 2019 Light the Night ski, more than 50 visitors and residents took to the slopes at Slalom Plaza to participate in a night-time lantern ski down Wombat’s Ramble, the country’s longest green ski run. Taking donations from a series of promotions, more than $2,000 was raised on Saturday, bringing the total raised by the resort to more than $18,500 since we first hosted the event. Marketing & Communications Director, Jo Prothero, was full of praise for those who dug deep to support the cause. “It’s fantastic to see so many of our wonderful visitors and community members helping out to raise funds for this wonderful cause. Leukaemia has touched the lives of many Australians and it’s inspiring to see everyone come together to fight it.” “Falls Creek’s support of the Leukaemia Foundation and their fundraising efforts has been shown by nearly $20,000 being raised by the community in the six years since the Light the Night Ski began.” With the event marking the last official day of winter in 2019, Falls Creek is set to enjoy excellent skiing conditions with more than 120cm natural snow base leading into spring. These conditions have seen other Australian resorts this week announce they will extend their 16 week seasons to match Falls Creek’s longer 17 week declared snow season, ending Sunday October 6th. •

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS AUS Junior Championships

ast weekend Falls Creek hosted its final weekend of racing. The Australian Junior Cross Country Ski Championships took place on Saturday the 31st of August and Sunday the 1st of September in stunning Falls Creek weather. 80 Juniors across all age groups (U12 to U20) took part on the weekend which is a lot of juniors! What was thoroughly enjoyable to see as well was the heaps of support and cheering on the sidelines. Your XC Journo was there to cheer on Australia’s next generation and do a bit of scoping to see who is coming up through the ranks. Sprint Day On Saturday was a classic style 1km sprint event. The full course for the U20 competitors started in the Nordic bowl and flew up the Hoppet start before making a U turn and coming back down to the finish line via the Aqueduct. The younger kids did a slightly shorter course. The sprint action was impressive throughout the day with a lot of movement around from the prologues to the final results. In the U20/U18 class Bentley Walker-Broose out-sprinted Fedele de Campo in a very Visit the

close finish with only 0.5 of a second separating the young lads. John Mordes had a fantastic day improving greatly on his time trial result to finish third in the final. In the women’s U20/U18 final Lily Murnane was able to burn out a slightly undercooked Zana Evans (after her recent win in the Joey) with Leila Pammer rounding out the podium and striding really well too! Jayden Spring and Heli Laajoki took the U16 titles. Heli just held off Claudine Talbot and Rhiannon Castle in some very close racing. Clancy Merrick Harvey and Olivia Schubert won the U14 class and Alberto Allan and Damika Morton took out the U12 category quite emphatically. Overall the Victorians had a better kick in the classic sprint with Coach Teehom (Tom McMahon) a major player facilitating the right klister. He earnt himself a cuppa. Distance Day The Sunday brought a hot day. It’s funny saying ‘hot’ day at the snow but it had that kind of aura about it you know? Just felt like the winds from Alice Springs had made their way over. Anyway, a Freestyle distance style event took place with the longest events being a 7.5 and 5km for the U20 and U18 Men and Women.

In the 7.5km event, the pace was hot with favourite and New South Welshman Bentley Walker-Broose going off last to chase early pace setters in Fedele de Campo, John Mordes and Hugo Hinckfuss. Bentley was able to hold on to top spot with a time of 19:45 and finished 35 seconds ahead of Hugo Kinckfuss and 40 seconds ahead of Fedele de Campo. In the Women’s 5km event, young gun Zana Evans also from NSW finished first ahead of Rosie Fordham and Phoebe Cridland. Perhaps the closest category was the U16 boy’s class. A 5km course ended with the top three separated by only four seconds with Thomas Inglis coming through with a time of and edging out hot roller-skier Jayden Spring and Boris Stanish. Rhiannon skied well to win the U16 female category ahead of Hannah Gray and Sarah Champion. The boys and girls U14 skied a 2.5km loop with more close racing. Jake Cridland did the family proud and won his class ahead of Pheonix Sparke and Clancy Merrick Harvey skied solidly to third place. The girls U14 was won by Sean’hope Craig edging out young charlotte Walker-Broose by six seconds with local girl Rosie Franzke doing well to come third. Finally in the U12 categories, KV+ sponsor child and roller-ski extraordinaire Alberto Allan showed his talent to come six seconds ahead of Eli Spring and Liam Cullen-Croke. Damika Morton won ahead of Satu Laajoki and Daisy Craig came third to round off our cutest podium for the weekend!

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS Overall This weekend of junior racing was the first time FIS points were awarded in the U20 categories with the winners of each distance event being awarded 140.80 FIS points as that is the base line maximum penalty for a FIS distance event, so some good points for the kids! These points will be helpful for the juniors in ‘A’ qualifying for the World Junior Ski Championships which will be in Germany in February 2020. To A qualify you need two results under 180 points or one result under 150 points. This weekend also rounded out the qualification races for the for Youth Olympics which will be held in Lauseene, Switzerland. As it stands Australia is allowed to send one boy and one girl to the YOG with a sneaky chance of sending an extra female. So lots riding on these results and a lot to be decided over the next couple of weeks. Good luck to those National Team athletes racing in New Zealand at the Winter Games! THE FASCINATION WITH ALPS Charlie Derrick’s Final Crossing

he idea for a winter crossing from Mountain Creek to Mt Hotham first took shape in 1964 between a group of keen skiers from the Wangaratta Ski Club. For those that can remember, 1964 was not a great snow year and the WSC group had gathered for a week of skiing on Mt Bogong from Cleve Cole Hut in order to find some snow on the higher elevations. One night, quite possibly in amongst singing songs and enjoying friendly camaraderie, the idea of the Straightjackets was born. The Straitjackets were a series of skiing challenges that were viewed as a stern test of endurance. Up-and-down Bogong was considered the easiest of the challenges and was named the Bronze Jacket. Next was the Silver Jacket from Mountain Creek to Falls Creek. The Golden Jacket was Mountain Creek to Hotham. The unlikely Diamond Jacket was from Bogong to Buller and if you wanted platinum studs on it you had to make it there and back in a day. The entry in the Cleve Cole logbook provides more information which was all in good fun. Uncle Charlie Derrick, a gentle and well-loved farmer from Wangaratta gave this concept a bit more thought over the following summer. Charlie was a strong skier having finished second in the Australian Championships and had enjoyed skiing in Europe in the early 60’s. Training for skiing was rudimentary by contemporary standards during that time and local farmers were frequently met by Charlie running through the paddocks towing drag chains in order to build up his strength. Charlie was keen for the physical challenge but was also highly motivated to promote awareness of the emerging sport of cross-country skiing. Australia was just starting to produce Olympic standard skiers and Charlie knew that awareness of the sport would greatly Travelling to Falls Creek this winter?

increase the number of people enjoying the beautiful Australian Alps. Charlie chose early September 1965 as the best time to attempt the crossing. The combination of longer days and firm frosthardened snow would provide the best opportunity to safely navigate the route which was poorly defined and not marked by snow poles (at that stage). Choosing a day that looked like good weather Charlie made camp at Mountain Creek on the night of September 2, which was also his father’s birthday. The forecast for the following day looked promising although the alpine forecasting was in its infancy in those years and was notoriously unreliable. Setting off at 4am, under clear starry skies, it looked like a great day for the attempt. Clothing was not advanced in Australia at that time and a pair of knickerbockers and woollen Victorian Ski Team jumper were considered the height of responsible mountain attire. Hiking up the Staircase Spur with only the moonlight as companion, Charlie made his way past Bivouac Hut and onto the Summit of Bogong for the sunrise. Authors note – I was later told a story of someone who was sleeping in Bivouac Hut that night and Uncle Charlie noted that the door was open. Being conscientious of the mountain huts, Charlie duly closed the door and barred it from the outside, unbeknownst to those asleep within. The only way out was to break out a window which they did as Charlie was disappearing up to the summit of Bogong. Charlie met some friends from Wang Ski Club who were camped at Cleve Cole for a breakfast of bacon and eggs before starting the difficult descent down to Big River. Skiing on a pair of skis that he made over a home-made steam barrel on the farm, Charlie skied off course a few times before finally getting on to the T-Spur for the main descent. The precious 30mins that he lost there may have had dire consequences later in his journey. After crossing Big River Charlie made the big climb up Duane Ropers Spur on to the Bogong High Plains. The clear dawn weather had given way to clouds and wind as he struck out across the vast plains

Dropping down Basalt Temple, Charlie passed Dibbin’s Hut at the head of the Cobungra River before the final 12km climb up to Mt Hotham. This was the last shelter that Charlie could have utilised as the weather and conditions worsened around him. Charlie struck on, knowing that there was a large welcoming party waiting for him at Brockoff Hut (near Loch car park) at Mt Hotham, including his younger brother Bob. Charlie skied well into the night weary with fatigue from the weather and the physical toll of a challenging environment. Finally, he could go no further. Exhausted he took off his skis and after stumbling a few more steps Charlie lay down to rest at the top of Mary’s Slide at what is now remembered as Derrick Cole. He was just a few hundred metres from Loch Car Park but the weather and the fatigue were too much to bear and this became his final resting place. The welcoming party at Loch unaware of his location and buffeted by the blizzard around them headed back to the Wangaratta Ski Club in the sombre hope that Charlie had taken refuge at Dibbin’s Hut. Sadly, the search party located his body early the following day and the beautiful, but at times inhospitable, Australian Alps had claimed another life. • Ben and Chris Derrick “You’ve only got one head – put a lid on it!”

In 1957, an elongated sausage dog called ‘Lump’ arrived at the villa of the great 20th century artist Pablo Picasso. Lump looked into the deep brown eyes of Picasso and decided he was home. And so began a great love between a man and his dog - a friendship that spanned 17 years. But this was more than a friendship, as Lump also became an artistic muse for Picasso, appearing in over 50 of his artworks. t is with great pleasure and gratitude to let the Falls Creek Community know that we raised $1000 at our Charity Yoga Event last week. Funds were raised for Skyler Levy, 3 years old who is suffering brain cancer. Skyler’s family needs our support due to the fact that he is undergoing intensive daily radiation treatment, requiring a general anaesthetic for effective delivery. This level of treatment has been ongoing for the last 26 days. The depth and extent of his treatments looking forward will continue to require a great infusion of funds and ongoing love and support. Some good news: the last update on Skyler’s progress was positive indicating that some tumours have shown signs that the treatments are having some good effect. More treatments are being researched and examined for his best benefits. We continue to wish Skyler and his family all the very best in his brave fight.
