FROM THE CEO The 1%ers…
N
ow, I’m not referring to that proportion of the population who’s wealth or income qualifies them as being a ‘1%er’… However, while I’m at it, you might be surprised to know that according to Investopedia, relative to the rest of the world, an annual income of USD$32,400 will put you in the top 1% of income earners globally, whilst if your net worth (the sum of everything you own, less debt) is USD$770,000 you’re also ‘in the club’… if that’s the sort of thing that blows your hair back. However, the point of my heading refers to the little things that make a big difference. Those small, and what appear to be minor actions that when taken in aggregate sum up to a series of experiences that, overall, make an impression, or result in a positive (or negative) user experience. The 1%ers can be good and bad. Don’t get me wrong. It swings both ways. Like a Net Promoter Score, 1%ers influence how likely someone is to recommend your business to a friend or colleague (btw: NPS is expressed as a percentage, where anything above 50% is good for your business).
A seminal article in the Harvard Business Review in 2003 titled ‘The One Number Your Need to Grow’ was behind what was to become the essential customer service metric used by any business serious about offering a superior experience and knowing how well they’d achieved that aim. Much like the current ‘big data’ phenomenon, the more known about what shapes behaviour and experiences, the better organisations can work at tailoring solutions, presenting purchasing options, influencing decisions and directing outcomes. Think about your last experience with an online travel agency and why ‘cookies’ on your computer are of such enormous value to companies. Who hasn’t tried to book flights on line, been distracted for a few minutes, then gone back to only see the price of airfares change, and generally not in your favour… thank algorithms, data analysts and ‘sensors.’ Welcome to the age of ‘autoanalytica,’ where iterative experimentation, insight and validation is everywhere. I digress… the 1%ers at a ski resort, or any holiday destination - are what makes the difference to your stay. Sometimes its things that can’t necessarily be fully controlled, like the weather. In particular, if you’re

lucky enough to be here in Spring, the sun is generally shining, the skiing/boarding is relaxed, the lift queues are slightly shorter, you amass a goggle tan that makes it look like you’ve spent an entire season at the snow and you’re the envy of all your snow mates. Other times, it’s that local who sees that you’re unsure of where you are going and points you in the right direction, it’s the towies (we call them towies at Falls Creek) who engages with you at the lift (versus some other mountains where they are too busy bantering with each other to care about how your day is going); it’s the victory of finding that car parking spot close to the lifts (hint: get here early, ie. Pre 8:30am, cause the snows the best then too!); it’s having an array of venues to choose from for breakfast, lunch and dinner, it’s the night show, it’s free Oversnow between Slalom Plaza and the Village Bowl for when the legs just can’t carry you home, it’s a lot of little things… Now, a traditional ski season is somewhere between 113 and 120 days long. An average season sees the snow pack peak at around 160cm, from cumulative snow fall of circa 3 metres, and the season sees in excess of 450,000 visitor days spent at the resort, with on hill services provided by roughly 1,800 extraordinary ‘Falls Creek’ employees. Over 100,000 car parking spots are utilised, 1500 skiers get help from ski patrol, up to 950k litres of potable water is consumed per day, and up to 181,000ML of water is applied to snow making, whilst 748 tonnes of rubbish is collected with 46% of it diverted from landfill via recycling and 50 tonnes of food waste repurposed. Not to mention the 10,000kms of roads travelled to clear snow for access, or the 5,600km’s of XC trails groomed and the 44,000 packages of freight delivered across the village.

FROM THE CEO Now, whilst these aren’t the 1%ers, it’s the stuff that you don’t necessarily think about, but that must be done right so that the 1%ers can count too. Without our guests, you, we’d just have all this snow to ourselves. Whilst on powder days that’s not a bad thing, however it’s all about being able to share Australia’s greatest alpine village with you. That is what really matters and making sure that you want to come back and visit us regularly. What’s my point? A lot happens in a season, the above is just the tip of the iceberg, but to ensure you have the best experience possible and Falls Creek meets your expectations, let us know about the 1%ers too. We get great, diverse and generally constructive feedback and we take it on board. We can’t improve on what we don’t know isn’t quite meeting your expectations… and where we can, we’ll implement change for the better. Email: 1%ers@fallscreek.com. au – with the good and bad. Foodie Tip of the Week: Talking of 1%ers… I spent last weekend at Mt Buller for the National Interschools and to be blunt, we are very spoiled at Falls Creek with the number, quality and variety of food options… 30 plus restaurant venues, bars and eateries to choose from, none more than a short distance from anywhere. So, get out there, visit one, two or three – trust me, we’re above average when it comes to food and après. Check places out here: http://www.fallscreek.com.au/dining/
It doesn’t seem like much, but just to take in the magnificent scenery surrounding our resort adds so much more to your experience. Sun Valley Arm of Rocky Valley Dam taken from the pole line between Ruined Castle and Mt McKay. Pic – Philippa Rye

RACE CLUB NEWS Just a Bit More
I
have to admit to feeling a bit of writer’s lurgy this week and struggling to come up with something relevant to write about. Waxing lyrical about race results week in-week out brings its own pleasures of course, but every now and then it can be a struggle to find new ways to say well done all… this is who made the podium this week. Plus I didn’t make the podium for the Summit Masters GS so who cares how everyone else did. Kidding…! but only just. I tend to do a bit of thinking while I take my dog Spot on his first walk of the day at 7am. Often I’m thinking about what I have to get done in the next 24 hours, sometimes I’m dwelling on complaints, sometimes I’m asking myself how is it possible that my kids can still be growing when they seem to exist on a diet of protein, frozen
berries and corn chips while the fruit and vegetables slowly turn to mush. Sometimes I’m wondering about the sanity of my own decision-making in giving out my phone number to people when I get texts from Club members at 7am in the morning (for the love of God people…don’t you have breakfast to concentrate on at that time of the morning! I’m only up because I can’t sleep through the high-pitched whine of a dog than needs to wee). I know, I know, I don’t have to respond to the texts immediately… but I’ve found unanswered texts are a bit like stalkers. They lurk in the background and you know they are waiting for you no matter how much you ignore them. But that’s enough about my dating history in my early 20’s… But this morning, I was wondering specifically about what I was going to write about for Ken this week. Several topics have been floating round in my mind to write about all season. I could write articles about our wonderful Life Members and the contributions they have made to Race Club over the years… great plan, but I need
to actually find the time to sit down with them all for a chat otherwise I’ll be relying on Google and Wikipedia for background which we all know can’t be 100% relied on for accuracy. I could write about what’s involved in volunteering as a Committee Member for the Club for a season… but then I realised I’m trying to engage with people not put them to sleep. I could write about the number of times in a season that I have to explain the difference between Falls Creek Race Club and the Falls Creek Race & Events Department to people. That’s always fun. Instead I’m going to write about how fast the time flies when you’re working and living on the hill over winter. It only seems like last week that it was June and everyone was freaking out over our new website and how to use it. It seems like three days ago that it was the July school holidays and we were collecting donations for our big fundraiser for the year. It seems like yesterday that the State Interschools competitions took place and half the club spent what feels like half their life driving to Buller and back for school ski/board team selection. And now we are nearing the end of our full season programs and taking bookings for our Spring Training Camps. 11 weeks have flown past at what feels like a ridiculously fast pace. I’m wondering if the pace of winter passing by is just me getting older or if the season always speeds past this fast and I’ve just never noticed it before. Before we know it October will be here and the season will be officially over.
SKI & BOARD FALLS CREEK
This season has been filled with more skiing, more kids play dates, more homework, more get together lunches, more catch up dinners, more work, more dogs walks, more races, more volunteering, more random chats, more cuddles on the couch with the kids and dog and more new friendships than last season.

RACE CLUB NEWS For the weekend warriors, they can also add more driving to that list. All of these ‘mores’ sure do make the season fly past. I still haven’t tried out the snowboard my younger sister gave me, but it’s safe to say that is another ‘more’ that I’ll fit it in before the lifts shut down for the season. I think that is a pretty good summary of the season for most Race Club parents. This season has been filled with more than last year, if only because the kids are growing up and each year is a bigger and better challenge than the last… or at least bigger skis/boards and boots than last year.
So as we draw closer to the end of the season, we celebrate with our night of nights – the End of Season Presentation Dinner. Everyone is welcome and it’s a great time to catch up with old mates and new before people start leaving the mountain. Check your newsletter for booking details. And finally, congratulations to everyone to took place in the Summit Masters competitions last weekend. You were amazing to watch and to compete against. • Cheers, Nyree Fiddes - Falls Creek Race Club

DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA Shelley Earl Camp
W
hat a weekend. The snow started falling on Friday afternoon and the Shelley Earl Camp kicked off with excitement and enthusiasm – a beautiful mood that continued all weekend. DWA had a mixture of Sit Skis and alpine skiers and number of DWA Guides could be seen around the mountain. Shelley had returning members from last year who as first time on the snow last year were back to improve and continue their individual journeys. Andrew Brown on Sit Ski showed that the physical work and exercise in the gym paid dividends when it comes to manoeuvring a sit ski down the mountain. While the DWA Guides of Pete and Dan had Andrew in their safe hands, Andrew progressed and could be seen going down Highway 83 and starting to guide the sit ski around the mountain with lower inclination, angulation and opening each turn with his outriggers. Independent sit skiing is not far away for Andrew. Natasha also improved tremendously from last year in a sit ski and has also now asked if it’s possible to try a stand-up snow slider next year. This will be a challenge but one that DWA know Natasha is ready for and will allow her to gain independence. Gerry - whilst visually impaired showed no rest and like the ‘Terminator’ continually kept on skiing down run after run with an “I’ll be back” attitude. His

stance and body position improved while he continued to forge ahead searching for the parallel turn. Visually impaired skiers are usually two track skiers and use a kinaesthetic (learn by sense of touch) and concise focused verbal approach to be able to ski or snowboard. The DWA guide could be seen kneeling on the snow and physically moving Gerry’s skis into the position required and allowing Gerry to feel what was required. Lachlan was not far behind being on the snow for the first time since his accident and while also visually impaired and cautious, Lachlan was instructed in kinaesthetic learning on both legs. Lachlan

took on the challenge with the need to manage the turns and with instruction from the DWA Guides Lachlan could be seen turning and completing left and right turns by working his skis and compensating power with edging technique. This allowed Lachlan to produce a distinct edge and this assisted his legs when turning. Wow!! The results were astounding and the DWA guides could be seen celebrating on the snow. Andrew Hall also put in immense effort during the year to attend the camp. Andrew - having once been an intermediate skier - could be seen now starting his journey from the beginning and learning about his physical capability, equipment and the necessary skills to manage his skis. Well done Andrew and here is to a great personal journey. If you would like to know more about supporting, volunteering or donating to DWA, go to www.disabledwintersport.com. au. • Ken Payne

COMFORTABLE SKIING The Joys of Cramping Feet!
L
ike the whiff of waving wattle, we’re welcoming spring into our lives again – the beautiful sunny ski days, spring corn and longer evenings. But sometimes the slightly heavier snow at the end of the day (read: slush) can have your feet in agony if your boots aren’t quite right. And then there are some poor snow-lovers who have sore feet no matter the conditions. One of the most common complaints is arch cramps. The foot has two arches (the inside and the outside longitudinal arch) and one transverse arch across the forefoot (which isn’t technically an arch because the structures that create it don’t fit into the typical arch camp). The inside (or medial) longitudinal arch is the one we’re all most familiar with and the one that typically is the critical site of day-ending pains. There are two base causes to foot cramps: the foot working too hard, or the foot not having enough space to do its work.
them). Without this support the foot gets overpowered and cramps up. Alternately, if the foot does not have the breathing space to do its job then there are going to be consequences. This is typically the result of not enough volume in the boot or excessive support from the orthotic or footbed. If your boots fit like a onesey that is three sizes too small, then the squish being applied to the foot muscles can create a cramp. This also plays havoc on the lateral arch which offers a very special cramp of its own. And again, back to the orthotic. If the shape of the orthotic is correct but the amount or density of the posting is excessive, then again, the medial arch will not be able to flex or activate. As a quick wrap up – if you get foot cramps, you need to make sure that your boot is the correct flex for you, that it is the correct size and volume and that your ski orthotic is appropriate, then you can wave your cramps goodbye! •
“How can we ski when our feet are cramping?” Pic - Daily Telegraph
Krista Sturday, Podiatrist and Boot-fitter a Ortho Ski
Typically, a foot will end up working too hard if the boot is too big, too soft, or doesn’t have enough support. When the boot is overly spacious, the foot needs to move more than Peter Garret on stage to get the intended message to the ski. Unlike Peter Garret, your foot can only do this for so long and it starts cramping up because it’s working too hard. If the boot is noodly soft in its flex pattern, then it’s not going to be holding up its end of the bargain (supporting you in a forward leaned stance) and the foot must do too much work to balance you. In translating your weight to the front of the ski and aiding you to stay centred on the ski, then the arch cramps. Now, the role of your ski orthotic is to help the foot stay in a position where the foot structure can cope with the forces produced during a ski turn (big forces, and lots of

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS Chinese Spring Skiing

e now enter into the third ‘phase’ of our Australian Winter season here at Falls Creek, Spring Skiing season. The time of year when the sun shines oh so bright, the snow transforms like crazy and 40 Chinese junior skiers’ double pole their way across the Bogong High Plains. Can I just say quickly, it is quite incredible what they are doing. Whenever I’ve been out there, I’ve noticed that firstly, they don’t really ski together, often they ski 200meters apart, not sure why. Secondly, they wear quite preservative clothing, face tape, full face buffs, many jackets, I must say +2degrees is pretty cold…. Thirdly, and what is my favourite, not one ounce of emotion is ever displayed on their faces. that. Here, far away from home, selected in a group of 40 athletes from a country with a population of 1.4billion people, to win China a gold medal at the Beijing Olympics. The deal is to train hard! How To Make The Most Of Spring This week I will be sharing the insiders tips and tricks on how to make the most of these wonderful Spring conditions. Falls Creek has a huge backyard called the Bogong High Plains which is part of the Victorian Alps and the Great Dividing Range. Just outside our door is the Alpine National Park which is a large stretch of undulating terrain and lies roughly inbetween the Frying Pan, good old Frying Pan, and Mount Bogong (1986m) to the north. This stretch of land is home to the largest area of snow covered terrain in Australia. The plains are also home to several great historical huts such as Fitzgeralds, Edmondson’s, Wallace’s, the list continues. So how do we explore this gold mine? There are many ways to travel Cross Country and they differ depending on ability, desired speed, and where you want to go. Your trip will also depend on the weather.

layer of snow melts during the day and then freezes overnight, we are met with a nice hard layer of snow meaning the once helpless skinny skis, can now take us anywhere the heart desires. The best too, is when there is minimal wind so as to not create windblown ice patches. If this process of melt and freeze continues over days, heading out off the groomed trails on a pair of skates (just a bit faster than the classic option) on a hard yet stable surface is the best way to go really far across undulating terrain. Some ideal trips with skates and crust snow is doing the Spion Kopje loop, a long lap around the Rocky Valley Lake and coming through Pretty Valley, or even just exploring Heathy Spur area. It is also great for beginners as you can start easily heading out towards Langford’s Gap and around Watchbed Creek or even just by the lake, stop and sample some pure mountain water.

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS Backcountry Tour If you go to the house of a self-acclaimed mountain expert, you would hope they have these three items; Touring bindings, skins, and a goggle tan (however through repeated ‘slow tanning’ sessions where sunscreen is a major player). I have a friend Finlay Clarke who has retired from XC racing. He recently explained to me that he has in fact ‘retired’ as opposed to ‘quit’ because ‘retired’ implies you have achieved all that you set out to do and are content with your decision. He has all this equipment and might one day be a mountain expert if he gets his act together. He has done numerous trips so far, this winter, heading out to Roper’s Lookout (a quick and easy one), Mount McKay, and Rocky Knolls (beyond Ruined Castle) but probably the most impressive was a descent from the top of McKay, down to the AGL power station via the pipeline. He says the pillars that he was jumping from alongside the pipe were ‘breathtaking’ (wouldn’t recommend this descent at this time of year unless you like grass skiing). He will say you can head out in all conditions with soft powder days a favourite as well as slightly softened crusty sessions. The trick though with this Backcountry gear, is to choose journeys centred around a ‘gnarly’ or ‘sick’ downhill descent as opposed to a long undulating marathon. The skins allow you to hike up steep slopes and once you take them off and are staring down a shaft or cornice, you want to be both licking your lips and excited knowing you have some proper downhill skis underfoot. One for the thrill seekers, from McKay, you can see

a Europeanesque shaped mountain called Mount Feathertop, as the legend goes, if you can ski down that cornice, you will one day bask with the greatest snow gods up in heaven. AUSXC Season Launch Plug Finally, the Australian National XC Ski Team is holding the annual ‘Season Launch’ cocktail party on Friday Evening, the 18th of October in Melbourne. This event serves as a celebration of the Australian Winter season, a send-off to the team going overseas to compete in the Norther Hemisphere on World Cup, Continental Cup and World Juniors/ U23 Championships and as well as being a fundraiser event for such competitions with a silent and loud auction. Make sure you mark in this date. It will be held at the Middle Park Bowls Club, 101 Canterbury Road, Albert Park 3206 at 7pm. Tickets can be purchased on skiandsnowboard.org. au/event/48484/. I hope to see you there! • Seve de Campo.

MINI SERIES By Snow Trek & Travel
A
fter a slow start to the Australian winter with the first MiniSeries having to be cancelled, we did not anticipate Telemark Nordic Ski Club would hold its final Snow Trek and Travel MiniSeries for 2019 on Saturday 7th September at Falls Creek on fantastic snow. Thankfully the weather was nowhere near what the meteorologists had forecast. Arriving at Windy Corner to a light breeze and lots of fresh snow, we had amazing cover for all the MiniSeries race loops. Night time grooming was great however, due to the amount of fresh snow, the loops needed a skidoo tiller touch up prior to the start. A huge thank you to Ian Franzke and the Birkebeiner Ski Club for the use of their skidoo. Despite the ordinary weather predictions it did not deter 16 juniors and 10 adults from entering and having some last race of the season fun! A few of the participants took the opportunity to race in fancy dress and be towed across the finish line. It was great to also see juniors encouraging their parents to also take part, which meant the biggest class for the day was the adults division. The presentations for the season were held after the adults event, where 6 juniors Visit the

received their special Telemark Nordic Ski Club medallion for completing all of the Snow Trek & Travel MiniSeries events for 2019 and all junior participants received a special TNSC Snow Trek & Travel Diploma. Congratulations to the following juniors for completing all MiniSeries races for 2019: • Hamish Retchford; • Connor Taylor; • Kirsten McLennan; • Rosie Franzke; • Josh Lock; • Riordan McMillan. (For those participants who were not able to make the presentations an emailed diploma will be sent to you.) Telemark Nordic Ski Club would like to say a big thank you to: • Our sponsor Snow Trek & Travel Wodonga for their continued support of developing and encouraging families to love and enjoy the sport of cross country skiing. Also for providing great spot prizes for each MiniSeries event. Remember to see Peter and his team at Snow Trek & Travel Wodonga, 161 High Street Wodonga 3690, Tel: 02 6056 6605, for all your cross country skiing needs! • Geoff Sorensen and his team at Falls Creek groomers. It was tough start with not enough snow for grooming to take place, however, skiing multiple times around the same course enabled an old fashioned track to be set. We thank you for keeping us updated on the grooming planned for each of our races and enabling our juniors and adults to have a great ski racing experience on fabulous tracks. • Birkebeiner for their continued support to help spread the word about Telemark Nordic Ski Club’s Snow Trek & Travel MiniSeries events and for the continued use and access

to the Birkebeiner Skidoo. Your support has been and still is greatly appreciated. • The Snow Trek & Travel MiniSeries families, that’s all of you, thank you for supporting Telemark Nordic Ski Club’s series of races and assisting wherever possible with set up, pack up and the running of the adults’ events. Telemark gives all the juniors a big pat on the back for your enthusiasm and fabulous smiling faces when participating and also being so willing to take on official roles so your parents and Telemark officials can also join in on the racing fun. We hope you have the enjoyed this challenge! • Also finally to Telemark Nordic Ski Club members, it takes a team to put on this series of races and despite the fact we are a small club, I am proud to have dedicated members who love the sport of XC skiing so much that they are willing to stand out in all sorts of weather to record times, laps, be on far control duty, helping with set up, pack up, handing out drinks, and collecting race numbers. Without your tireless energy and enthusiasm these events would not possible. A huge thank you!!!! Enjoy your spring skiing, Lynn-Maree. •

PURPLE HOUSE Fabulous Indigenous Enterprise
L
ast week, we featured a wonderful article by 15 year old Mount Beauty student Grace Walkley who travelled to the Kimberley with the Outdoor School as part of the ‘Future Makers’ program. This week we have an item from another Mount Beauty resident, a highly qualified nurse who travelled to Alice Springs. This is her story. Recently I spent a week in Alice Springs volunteering at Western Desert Nganampa Walytja Palyantjaku Tjutaku Aboriginal Corporation, better known as ‘The Purple House.’ The Purple House is an Indigenous owned and operated Haemodialysis Service that began its journey in the year 2000 with the sale of over a million dollars worth of stunning Indigenous artworks. Our indigenous population experiences End Stage Renal Disease(ESRD) at a proportionally higher rate than NonIndigenous Australians. This is due to many factors including genetics, disease, adaptation, medical access and remoteness. With this excessively high number of people needing dialysis for ESRD, over many years, most were leaving their communities, and moving ‘off country’ to Alice and Darwin for treatment. The Western Desert elders could see that families were being disrupted; the distance was causing isolation and loneliness and – on top of this, important cultural knowledge wasn’t being passed on to the next generation. This is where the artworks and the million

dollars comes into play. With these funds, the community went about purchasing a house in Alice Springs, and then developing a unique and new Model of Health Care that is Indigenous based and revolves around the importance of family, country and compassion. In the 19 years since and with a lot more fundraising, 16 more ‘remote’ Dialysis Units have opened allowing more people to remain ‘on country’ for treatment and for more to return to ‘country’ for important cultural events. Along with these remote Dialysis Units, the Purple Truck is a mobile Dialysis Unit that moves around the outback as the demand is identified. Recently the Purple Truck received great publicity when actor Jack Thompson (an ESRD patient) utilised the services while at the Garma cultural festival – and then for the filming of a movie ‘High Ground’, with ABC Australian Story doing a feature on the Service. These remote Dialysis Units cover millions of kilometres from Kintore on the WA boarder, to
Yirrkala in Arnhem Land and as far south as Pukatja in SA. You can check out the full story of this wonderful service at www. purplehouse.org.au. I spent my week in Alice enjoying the cultural knowledge of the elders, sitting around the camp fire talking, helping with daily chores, working within the enterprise that helps to fund the organisation (bush balms, hand creams, etc) and distributing ‘It’s in the bag’ parcels to those in need. I look forward to returning in 2021, working in my field as a Renal Nurse in one of the many remote units, encompassing the lifestyle and soaking up the wonderful, amazing culture and country that is many thousands of years old. PS: The hand cream is amazing - jump online and order yourself some at: www:purplehouse.org.au. • Leigh Cappellari

UKV COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION Annual Report
T
he AGM of Upper Kiewa Valley Community Association Inc was held on Thursday, September 5th. The Chairperson, Jodee Betheras, presented the following report. This year, we have maintained our main goal as a community association - that is to be advocates for the communities of the Upper Kiewa Valley. We have continued to attend the monthly Shire council and Mount Beauty CHAG meetings in order to keep abreast of what is happening in the community. We have not embarked on any new projects, as the ones we are working on are longterm and also time-consuming. These are the continuing work on the Open-space opposite the AGL offices, the Pebble Beach Walk extension through Pick My Project, and the installation of public facilities in Tawonga South. However, we have also auspiced Steve Gardiner and his river project on Embankment Drive. He is at the point where he no longer needs our support which is always our end goal, that is, to empower people to get the job done themselves. We have also convened two community meetings resulting in the formation of a new sub-committee: Towards Renewable Energy Kiewa (TREK), which has now held a successful Solar Forum, resulting in many in our community participating in a scheme to install a new style hot water system. Since our inception we have been nominating community members and organisations for the Alpine Shire Australia Day Awards and with some success. It has been noted that in the last two years other groups have submitted successful nominations. This is what we were hoping to achieve, so we are delighted and encourage the community to maintain this situation.
commitment and passion the committee has for making our community a better place to live and thank them sincerely for their continuing efforts. I hope the UKVCA can continue to represent and advocate for our community in the coming year. We do need our members to spread the word and explain to others in our community what it is that we do. We will, of course, keep the Alpine Shire on its toes as our goal of improving and maintaining communication. Ultimately, we strive to support you, our members, to be catalysts for change and improvement in our community.
Just a reminder that we do have a website, www.ukvcommunity.org.au, and a Facebook page and we encourage you all to use these to follow our progress and seek information. I hope your interest in the UKVCA continues into the future, and it would be great if you would take out or renew your membership for $10 for the next year. Upcoming Events: Thursday, October 3rd. – The Annual Community Forum to which we invite representatives of our three levels of government. This year we delayed the Forum due to the Federal elections being held earlier in the year but we are very pleased to

announce that we will have Helen Haines, MHR Indi, Bill Tilley, MLA Benambra and Charlie Bird, CEO Alpine Shire to address the meeting. The community is invited to attend, whether members or not, and will have the opportunity to address questions to the speakers at the end of the meeting. Venue: AUDITORIUM@ informationcentre, Mount Beauty, 7:30pm. Supper will be provided allowing an opportunity for an informal chat. Saturday, October 5th – Community Information Walk from Pebble Beach. This is an opportunity for community members and visitors to walk the extension to the West Kiewa Track from Pebble Beach and familiarise themselves with the plans for the track which is being funded by the Victorian Government’s PICK MY PROJECT. Meet at the Pebble Beach loop, approximately 1km along the existing track, at 2pm, to be guided along the route by those who have been planning the project. Please wear sturdy footwear, bring a water bottle and sun protection if the weather is hot. •

THE 2019 HOPPET SOCCERDOZEN NEWS A Great Season
G
reetings Soccer Fans! The 2019 Mount Beauty Soccer Club season has come to an end and a thrilling one at that. Our season of seven Gala Days finished with our presentation day and annual Adults vs kids matches. The competition in these matches was fierce. Three parents and a grandparent pitted themselves against the combined might of the under 6’s in a no goalie, limited time match and although the final score was 2-2, the kids were declared winners on count back. The under 9’s met serious competition as the coaches joined the adults team (Richard Stratton, Brett Esler and Jarrod Paine) but still the kids came up victorious with superb running goals scored by both Isobel Stratton and Jemima Paine. Now that the adults were warmed up and their numbers swelled, football boots and shin guards were donned and the under 11’s were prepared to pit themselves against us. The adults did not hold back. The kids booted the ball hard and straight and normal time ended with a 2-2 draw. Not to finish the match here, as trophies were on the line, the match went to a penalty shootout. The teams lined up and went kick for kick against brave goalkeepers, Eziekel Minutello for the kids and Charlie Rose for the adults.
And the saves were amazing. The game ended with the adults victorious and strong challenges being issued by the kids for next year’s re-match.
for all clubs during these days. Clubs share players if you are short players and kids make new friends and create competitions with kids from other towns.
Our Presentations after the matches (with sausage and bread in hand) saw a medallion presented to each player that participated for the season and awards of Best and Fairest (Under 9) get awarded to Zali Lutter-Wood and William Rose (under 11). Our perpetual Charlie Oakley club spirit award this year was given to a very hard working and helpful player named Daisy Stratton.
Next year the club will continue to thrive and we are SHOUTING out now to those that are interested to get in touch with Jarrod (or request to join our facebook page) and get your names on a player waiting list. 5-11 year old players are invited. Term 2 will see the kick off of our season and we look forward to welcoming more siblings and families to the club. mtbeautysoccerclub@ gmail.com. • Jarrod Paine
It has been an amazing opportunity to be involved with our club this year. The opportunity that Soccer brings to our town for our kids (and adults) to get outside and active and enjoy some quality teamwork is fantastic. We travel short distances (no more than an hour) to play our once or twice monthly Saturday Gala’s and in the 2 or 3 matches each team plays on these days the goals are barely counted and the games don’t count toward any ladder or rankings. It’s all about participation and inclusion and the general feel of enjoyment and fun is palpable

PROPERTY OF THE WEEK Alpine View 26
S
ituated just a few metres from the new Eagle High Speed Quad chairlift in the rejuvenated Village Bowl precinct, this is a spacious three bedroom, two bathroom, two storey apartment with massive owner storage space and a balcony with spectacular views of the Village and Summit runs. The property was once owned by the General Manager of Falls Creek Ski Lifts and was extensively renovated at that time. Alpine View is a well-managed apartment complex with good rental returns. There is a heated ski and boot room in the basement with two large lockable ski lockers reserved for this apartment. You can ski to the door and leave your equipment downstairs and stroll up to your property. The huge under-roof storage area is ideal for an owner to lock away their possessions when the apartment is rented, without having to cart everything back home. The Falls Creek Accommodation Transport Service drives guests right to the door. There are shower and changing rooms

(and a sauna), as well as storage area in the basement for guest luggage so skiers can arrive early, go skiing for the day and checkin later on. This also means guests can ski for the day at the end of their stay after checking out in the morning. Eight days of skiing for a seven day holiday! During the summer months, (described as everything not winter), the location can be easily accessed by car with adequate parking out front or nearby. While the enjoyment of Falls Creek as a winter resort is undoubted, it is the growing suite of summer activities that adds untold value to a purchase in the village. Over the last decade, much work has gone into developing and securing summer trade. The resort now boasts in excess of 40km of mountain bike trails – with some being accessed from the Village Bowl. Add to
these the many kilometres of aqueducts and management vehicle tracks and your exploring, whether on foot, on a horse or on your bike is endless. The Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing is an iconic Australian walk of international standard being promoted by Parks Victoria. The new Trails, Tales and Tucker guided walks are also proving to be a real hit. The afore-mentioned suite of summer activities includes the Alpine Challenge, the Mile High Dragon Boats, the Bicycle Network Peaks Challenge Falls Creek, the Easter Festival as well as regular mountain bike shuttles. (See Fallscreek.com.au/events for a complete list). This apartment has all modern conveniences and is a bargain at $370,000. Contact Ted Weeks at Falls Creek Real Estate on 0456 022 211. •

Join Team Mount Beauty either via: A) The TMB website, then you’ll also need to purchase an MTBA day licence if you wish to shuttle. Families can purchase multiple ones in a single transaction too! B) MTBA: If you’d prefer to get 3-12 months of insurance at the same time, you can get your MTBA Membership and TMB membership sorted in one go. 2. Let us know if you can volunteer on the day. We need: A) Bus drivers (to drive a lap or two) - Should have the 12 seater that anyone can drive and also a 21 seater requiring the drivers to have their light rigid licence).
B) Set-up in the morning (eg. marquees). C) Helpers for the BBQ (set-up, cook, pack-up). D) Kids activities organisers or beginner guides. 2019/20 Victorian Enduro Tour Calendar The 2019/20 series begins in October this year and the calendar looks much nicer temperature-wise, with the Mount Beauty round being held in November. Hopefully this means that the dirt is still tacky and we can avoid having any crazy hot weather events on race day. Stay tuned for updates as the events draw closer. 1. Round 1 - Albury: 19 - 20 Oct. 2. Round 2 - Mount Beauty: 2 - 3 Nov. 3. Round 3 - Falls Creek: 1 - 2 Feb. 4. Round 4 - Bike Buller Festival: 7 - 8 Mar. Google the ‘Victorian Enduro Tour’ for more info on the series. •

Lights – ALWAYS have your lights on when driving in the snow. With the reduced visibility, you’ll want to make your surroundings as visible as possible. On the side, you’ll want other drivers to be able to see you as well. But, do not use high beam in fog or snow as it reflects back at you and reduces visibility.
