FROM THE CEO It’s Closing Time (well sort of )‌

A

t this time in the season, emotions are a mix of both relief and disappointment, and tweaked with a healthy dose of excitement for the arrival of summer and all that happens at the resort during the green season. But in looking back at Winter 2019, in the words of local legend Rock De Marchi “all ski seasons are great, just some greater than others. Of course, this also depends on perspective. If it’s been your first or 51st season, how you compare it is very much a personal one, but one thing is for sure, Falls Creek is Australia’s prettiest, friendliest and generally all round most ‘majestical’ (for fans of ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople’) Alpine resort in the country. Whilst we might perhaps be a little bit biased in our opinion above, all of us here at Falls Creek agree the best part is that we get to share this wonderland with everyone who visits and there’s great satisfaction in being a part of something that brings so much joy, laughter, good times and smiles, especially on the faces of the kids, as they fall in love with this crazy winter sport.

As such, the resort couldn’t be the Best in Australia, if it weren’t for 1) our guests and 2) the mountain staff and stakeholders who make it all happen and create these amazing memories and fun times. So, thank you to all in helping make winter 2019 another one to remember. More broadly, on behalf of the Resort Management team, I’d like to thank – (in no particular order): BMW, Falls Creek Ski Lifts, Falls Creek Chamber of Commerce, Falls Creek Alpine Association, YMCA, Sport and Recreation Victoria, AGL, Parks Victoria, Vic Roads, the Emergency Services – CFA, SES, VicPol, Ambulance Vic, Falls Creek Ski Patrol, Falls Creek Medical Centre, 4-Site, Tourism North East and the Snow Victoria campaign management team, The Falls Creek Historical Society, Falls Creek Race Club, Falls Creek Primary School, XC Advisory Group, the Kangaroo Hoppet committee, Ski and Snowboard Australia, Bentley Sports, K2/Line/Blizzard Ski’s, Smith, XTM, Patagonia, ARCC, the Alpine Academy crew, all the stakeholders, operators, owners, restaurateurs, and staff across the resort, as well as those in the valley and the North East who promote the resort‌(apologies to anyone inadvertently left out).

The success of the resort and great guest experiences are built on the hard work and dedication of all those above. So, thank you. To the resort management staff, most of whom know that no two seasons are ever the same, your early preparation and preparedness contributed to a relatively ‘incident’ free and less demanding season than some that have gone before it. With strong visitation growth continuing to reflect a renewed interest in snow sports, there’s plenty of planning needed for what looks like a very bright future for the industry. Well done and thanks again for all your hard work and dedication. As the resort transitions to green season, to help get over the disappointment of the season ending, at least we can look forward to the ‘gear reviews’ from the Northern hemisphere. About now the industry magazines start to release their top picks of the new kit being released for skiers entering the 2019/20 seasons. If you’re a true ski tragic, these magazines quickly wash away the lament of our season closing and can provide hours of reading and wishful thinking for next season! Admit it, you’ve got subscriptions to Powder, Freeskier, Backcountry, Ski and more (not sure what snowboarders read, assuming they can‌ sorry)‌

FROM THE CEO – note – disappointed Geelong Cats fan writing) just in case. If you’re looking for something just that little bit riskier… October 5th is the day. Look out for the MTB madness that is McKayos… there’s no other ride like it in Australia… snow, dirt, road and 18 kilometres of ‘knuckle clenching’ action. This year’s ride will be the largest so far, with a record number of entries, so the ‘McKayos’ (aka Chaos) should be epic. Grab a vantage point in the village to see the riders hurtling through and cheer them on. On closing weekend, if you’re longing for summer the Frying Pan Inn will get you into the swing of it with a beach party… and the Falls Creek Tennis and Social club will be hosting an Octoberfest with a variety of food and drink options (proceeds going to the hosts). So, head to the Village Bowl to get in amongst all the action. Keep an eye on the website, www.fallscreek. com.au, it will change to its ‘summer green coat’ shortly and all the events for Summer 2019/20 will begin… watch this space to see what’s on and we look forward to seeing you back, if not over summer, then next winter.

MOUNTAIN BIKING SUMMER The McKayos

L

ast week we talked about the McKayos that has very quickly earned its reputation as an institution. A pilgrimage of shredders who love to ride and riders who love to shred. It’s not a bucket list item, it’s the one you first want to prove you can do it, then you keep coming back because it’s so damn fun.

Thank You The management and staff of the Traverse Alpine Group would like to thank the community, our visitors and friends for the wonderful support received during the season. It has been a great season and one where we have all enjoyed providing a broad range of services for our clients. Now it is time for a well-earned break and we look forward to seeing everyone (on your bikes) during the su mmer season. The Frying Pan Inn will be open for the Green Season from Wednesday 13 November – We look forward to seeing you then!

Snow, Dirt, Road - it’s been our mantra from Day One. The mass start snow start can bring the hectic for sure (if you let it), once through the money-shot start it’s then 1000m descending over 18km through the ski village and then awesome alpine National Park. There’s nothing like it. We’ll release the full course in due time but for How good is this – ready to rock n roll all the way to Bogong Village. Pic – Matt Rousu now, plan for Blue singletrack (about 4km) and fire • Afterwards, presentations will be trail with a bit of up and a bit of down. held back at Falls Creek, leading into It’s well achievable to the non-sender and Oktoberfest in the village bowl where rewarding as anything out there. plenty more Bright Brewery beers will be Event Details on offer to the thirsty masses. • Single Gravity Enduro Mountain Bike stage. • Mass start. • Entries open to Individual competitors only. • Categories from Elite to Junior (including e-bike category). • Winners will be determined by first individual rider to complete the course. • Official timing provided. • Competitors will be shuttled back to Falls Creek upon finishing the stage. • Full face helmets mandatory (XC/Enduro bikes recommended). • Event will conclude with the presentations and an official After Party – come Oktoberfest! • We’re organising a venue in Stingray at Slalom Plaza where spectators can watch a live stream of the start line.

“With snow in winter and bikes in summer, Falls Creek is a true year-round resort. Having an event like McKayos is the perfect crossover to tie the two seasons together.” “Registrations are selling out faster than we could have predicted. If you thought last year’s event was huge this one is going to blow you away with 100 more riders on the course” said Nathan Fenton of Falls Creek Resort Management. •

GREAT COMMUNITY FOCUS To Gather People Together

from the former Sweet Valley Sounds festival, fundraising raffles at West Peak Hotel, and a community grant from the Alpine Shire.”

brand new music, arts and cultural festival raising money for its local community is coming to the Alpine Shire in February next year.

The event was originally scheduled for October this year, however Mrs Mann said after discussions with Team Mount Beauty, yet another opportunity to work with a local group arose, meaning a new February date was set.

‘Ignition’, a mountain bike event hinged on the core social elements of the rider lifestyle. Join us at Falls Creek on 23rd and 24th November 2019 when the Mountain Bike season officially opens to celebrate all things MTB. From right now, bike track maintenance is going full steam to get everything ready for what is sure to be a great weekend – ‘Ignition’ – lighting up the mountain bike trails. Blue Dirt, the resort’s mountain bike shuttle company, will host this event to make a weekend of it. From riding and partying to everything in between, they’ve got it covered. Brett and the guys have put together a fantastic program over the two days that includes: • Gravity shuttles, • Back country rides, • Skills sessions, • Specialized demo bikes, • Beer hall, • Live Band & DJ, • Drift trikes and sessions plus much, much more!

Gather Festival will be held at the Big Hill Mountain Bike Park in Mount Beauty on the 8th of February 2020, with a number of musical acts and activities still to be announced. The event is a collaboration between the Champagne Club Kiewa Valley, Riff Raffs and Team Mount Beauty, who have come together to put on an affordable event for the local community and visitors to enjoy, all whilst raising money for those in need locally. Champagne Club President, Jodi Mann, said “Gather Festival represented everything the community organisation set out to do when it formed in 2016.” “We want to create community events enabling community spirit and provide entertainment, whilst at the same time raising funds to support young achievers, families or individuals in need within the Kiewa Valley,” Mrs Mann said. “We’ve already received so much support for the festival, including a generous donation

“Big Hill Mountain Bike Park was an obvious venue after seeing how well the space worked for the Sweet Valley Sounds festival when it was still running,” Mrs Mann said. “We then began discussions with Team Mount Beauty, who were interested in running a special riding day in conjunction with the festival. Conditions are much more ideal in early February, especially when you take into consideration the warmer weather and less chance of rain!” With a group of dedicated volunteers working behind the scenes to put the festival together, you can expect to hear more exciting information about the event, including when tickets will be on sale, sooner than later. Keep up to date by following Gather Festival on Facebook, or join their mailing list by visiting www.gatherfestival.com.au. •

Don’t miss out – Bookings closing soon! Visit www.ignitionmtb.com.au and make your booking now. “This a brilliant way to officially open the mountain bike season here at Falls. We are super pumped about our fabulous trails and can’t wait for visitors to get amongst it. We’ve got something for every rider, starting and finishing in the resort” says Falls Creek Marketing & Communications Manager, Jo Prothero. •

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS Season Wrap

J

ust like all good things must come to an end, it is time to say goodbye to the season here at Falls Creek.

I like to label things, and I will say that this season probably ticked most boxes without exceeding necessarily, but we like that. Any season though that ticks the boxes has been a great season. The snow came late but we got enough to last the season. I remember hearing from someone well before the Winter had arrived that it would be a ‘warm and dry’ season, and I thought to myself “wow, those adjectives don’t exactly scream ‘killer season,’ but we got there.” There was that large dump of snow just before opening weekend in May and I remember getting some really nice Kms in that weekend. Naturally it struggled to hold, and however we were able to squeeze the life out of that snowfall almost until the next snowfall came in early July.

OPEN: TUESDAY to SATURDAY 3pm - 6pm

It was kind of fun trying to navigate my way out past the damn wall and to Watchbed Creek on at times tiny little slithers of snow, - it worked though. On our AUSXC June ‘On Snow’ camp we had to keep roller-skiing at the beloved Power Station and down on Damms Road in Mount Beauty. The snow did come though, just in time for the second main race of the season, the High Plains Tour (sorry Thanks team for the fabulous grooming throughout the season – including the Birkie classic). The skiing beautiful spring conditions all September. Pic - SdeC was as good as it gets trails I had never skied on before. I was very through end of July and excited to ski well beyond Cope Hut out on August, with the groomers in fine form. the road to Omeo this Spring. The groomers were indeed in good form this season. Never did I have a speed session The Volunteers this season have also done and continually punch through the top an exceptional job. Thank you to all of layer of snow (one of my pet hates), no those volunteers who helped make it instead the snow was always firm, no matter such a fantastic season of racing here at the conditions. The groomers also hit up Falls Creek. You are the reason we hold the reputation of such a high quality Got a problem with pests? cross country ski resort in the Southern Hemisphere (and maybe the world). We can help with:

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Winter 2019 Edition SEVENTEEN

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS Finally, I think we can all agree that Spring was incredible this year. The sun came out. It felt like there were a lot of days it was wind free, sunny, and almost ten degrees Celsius. Not good for the snow melt, but good for the soul and good for the 40 odd Chinese skiers we welcomed to Falls Creek this season. I unfortunately wasn’t very smart of day and had my shirt off for probably two hours around lunch time, safe to say you can now see that I was indeed wearing a heartrate monitor that day – one of the more niche tan lines going around. What Now? Well the final couple of camps are finishing up here at Falls Creek. The Junior National Team training camp has been happening this weekend with around ten to fifteen juniors up for a few days getting in some final technique training under head coach Valerio Leccardi. One of the most ‘Valerio’ things to do is to schedule in team training during the AFL Grand Final on Saturday, so I’m sure they’re all excited for that. The National Development Team camp was a success from all reports last weekend and the Senior Team camp the weekend before also went very well. Now it’s back to the roller-skis for the team members and I’m sure many other keen skiers, it’s important to get back on that Hoppet grind. Words From Me That’s all from me for this Season. As always I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being the voice of Cross Country Skiing in Ken Bell’s THIS WEEK newspaper and I hope that you enjoyed at least one article this year. I’m back at Uni in Canberra, back at the ANU, studying, roller-skiing and hanging out with people who don’t know what cross country skiing is. So thanks again for the season and see you next year!

This event serves as a celebration of the Australian Winter season, a send-off to the team going overseas to compete in the Norther Hemisphere on World Cup, Continental Cup and World Juniors/U23 Championships and as well as being a fundraiser event for such competitions with a silent and loud action. Make sure you mark in this date. It will be held at the Middle Park Bowls Club, 101 Canterbury Road, Albert Park 3206 at 7pm. Tickets can be purchased on skiandsnowboard.org.au/event/48484/. THANKS TEAM And Now for Summer

I

t is only when you plan and start to write a thank-you and a bit of a summary for the season that you realise just how many people there are to thank. The good part here is that this realisation identifies the fact that it is a team effort. The whole resort is a team effort – from the snow clearers to the snow-makers; from the lifties to the ski patrollers, the resort could not function without all of these people and those not mentioned - to date. There is no-one in this resort more important than anyone else. The most important people are those that drive up the road (or get the bus). They pay full tote odds for their gear, their chains, their skiing/boarding and everything else. They have a great experience – fostered by great staff - and they go home happy. Snowsports is like that – you exercise for up to eight hours, breathing in crystal clear air and enjoying some absolutely fantastic scenery. It is these wonderful guests that we thank first. We thank you all for making the effort. Another aspect is the good positive feedback from guests, usually just a little note or comment to say thanks to everyone, the staff have been great and friendly and helpful. That’s what it is about – being able

to work in a snowsports resort and look after people on holidays is not that hard and the professional and friendly way our team have gone about it is a credit to them. So, thanks to the whole team – from the boss up! On a personal note, I would like to thank the crew on Guest Services, including the lifties, the instructors, the park crew and the operations team. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and looking after our guests. While we have this dedicated team of Guest Service personnel, it is actually the role of all staff to be Guest Services representatives – and you do it well. Another thank you must go to a couple of people who do a fabulous job of cleaning up along the Bogong High Plains Road between Mount Beauty and Falls. These people are known to many locals, but they do not want their names mentioned. This paper would publicly like to thank them for their efforts. These efforts have been mentioned before, and should be re-iterated here now. Thanks team. From the paper’s point of view, there are many to thank. Those that made the effort to contribute – and did a fantastic job in doing so. The truth is, this paper belongs to the community, and without your input we do not have a paper.

And, of course, a special thank you to all of the supporters/advertisers who have paid to have the paper represent them. Without your support we do not have a paper. Thanks to all of the team that have contributed photography – all of which helps to make the paper that represents the resort look totally professional. Thanks to the young team that braved all weather to get the paper delivered around the mountain. This year was particularly tough and Grace, Alex, Harrison, Will, Ben, Ava, Issy, Lucas, Lily, Sabella and several of their mates did a fabulous job in some of the most trying (read wet) circumstances. Excellent work! And the printer; the team at Specialty Press I have been dealing with for 40 years and they have always produced a quality product on time ready for the team at Remo’s Transport to bring it - hot off the press - to the mountain. We could go on! Thankyou to everyone, advertisers, supporters, readers – in fact the whole team. Once again, it’s a team effort. Now for Summer Cycling starts to rear its popular head and this summer is looking good. The Mitta to Mount Beauty is on hold for this year; so the first major event will be Ignition MTB Season Opening Event on 23rd and 24th November. Also on Friday 22rd to Monday 24th of November Falls Creek hosts the Alpine Challenge. This is a 160km, 100km or 60km run around the Bogong High Pains. Something to look forward to! Other events over summer include Trails, Tales and Tucker Guided Walks (with lunch), The Dragon Boats, The Alpine Audax, the Regional Longest Lunch, the Bicycle Network Peaks Challenge Falls Creek and the Easter Festival - well really, why would anyone go to the beach? Thanks everyone! Enjoy this week and the whole of green season. • Regards, Ken Bell

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Winter 2019 Edition SEVENTEEN

PROPERTY OF THE WEEK Studio West @ Frueauf

S

tudio West at Frueauf Village is a superb single level apartment of approximately 43.9sqm.

It has a good open plan layout and excellent natural light. The property can accommodate two to four people with a double bed (that converts to a twin bed) and a sofa bed in the living area. The bathroom is spacious and also features a separate toilet, great storage and a selfcontained kitchen. The complex features a quality restaurant that operates almost all year round and Frueauf Village is not too far from any of the services like fine restaurants and ski/ board hire and retail shops.

Challenge; the Peaks Challenge Falls Creek and the World’s Longest Lunch are highlights of the summer - as are the 12°C cooler temperatures on those stinking 40°C summer days in the city. The body corporate outgoings are approximately $6945.42 per annum and it is currently rented via the onsite management. This property has established rental returns and a good history of bookings. Priced at $225,000 this property is definitely worth a serious look. For further information on this property contact Christa Smit (Zirknitzer) at Zirky Real Estate, Mb: 0402 277 808. Located at the bottom of Ory’s Home Trail, the ski in – ski out aspect is great under normal snow conditions.

As an all-year-round resort and holiday destination, Falls Creek has a lot to offer. World class mountain bike trails have been constructed in the resort adding up to a total of over 40km of trails. This has led to lots of fun for locals and adds amenity and attraction for visitors. We then have the fully sealed Bogong High Plains Road giving access to the fabulous high plains, the Mitta Valley on the other side – including the Blue Duck and Payne’s Hut. A comprehensive suite of events makes summer in Falls Creek a nice time to be here. The Dragon Boat festival; the Alpine

THE 2019 HOPPET DOZEN

R U OK? Day On Thursday the 12 September Mount Beauty & District Community Bank held their annual sausage sizzle for R U OK? DAY. It was a huge success and well support by our lovely community. It provided our staff with a wonderful opportunity to chat to our locals and support such a great cause. On the day we had merchandise, drinks, cupcakes & sausages available to purchase and we raised a total sum of $ $1429.50 for the day. These funds will go directly to R U OK. •

‘RIDE LIKE A GIRL’ The Rotary Foundation and our local Rotary Clubs presents ‘Ride like a Girl’ as a fundraiser for End Polio. The film tells the story of Michelle Payne (Teresa Palmer) who dreams the impossible –

winning the Melbourne Cup. The youngest of 10 children, Michelle is raised by single father, Paddy. She leaves school at 15 to become a jockey but a family tragedy and a near fatal fall from a horse almost ends her dream. However, with the love and support of her father and brother, Stevie (who is in the film), she doesn’t give up and, against the advice of doctors and siblings, she rides on and overcomes impossible odds to achieve her dream. In the 1980s, the number of global cases of polio were around 350,000 per year with over 3,000 children dying of the disease. It was prevalent in 125 countries. In 1985, Rotary International launched PolioPlus and was later joined by World Health Organisation, the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. “You’ve only got one head – put a lid on it!”

Tennis We have the Wednesday night mixed comp starting up on the 9th October at 7pm with a social night, with the actual comp commencing the following Wednesday. The Kiewa and Talgarno District comp commences mid-October and runs all summer through to early March with a three week break in December/January. Section 3 (experienced juniors) and Section 4 (beginner juniors) play on Saturday mornings at 9am with around half the matches at home and half away. Last summer Mount Beauty entered a Section 2 team for the first time in 10 years and they played really well, finishing on top of the ladder after 15 rounds. Matches are played on Saturday afternoons at 1pm. A team consists of 3 females and 3 males each week. The club are currently in desperate need of more male tennis players for this team.

Emergency Ready Trivia Night Do you know where your Neighbourhood Safer Place is? What natural disaster kills more people in Australia? Experience shows that those who plan and prepare for emergencies can reduce the impact of the emergency, and can recover quicker afterwards. Taking the time to think about emergencies and making a plan helps you to think clearly, have a greater sense of control, and make better decisions when an emergency occurs. Alpine Shire Community Resilience Committee invites all members of the community to the free Emergency Ready Trivia Night at the Mount Beauty Community Centre on Saturday 19th October.

The event began as an initiative of Mansfield Shire Council in 2017 and has been used numerous times to help people to prepare for emergencies by testing their knowledge of bush and house fires, floods, storms and heatwaves. Alpine Shire Community Resilience Committee have taken on the event with a view to helping the local community to become better prepared in case of emergency. The Trivia Night complements REAP (Resilience Emergency Action Planning) Day which Years 4 – 6 students from the Kiewa Valley will participate in on Wednesday 16 October. REAP Day is an initiative of Alpine Shire Community Resilience Committee, designed to help young people understand the importance of being prepared for emergencies and thus be able to recover faster in the event of a disaster. The Trivia evening will start at 5pm with a free dinner provided by the Rapid Relief Team (RRT). The RRT offers catering assistance to charitable and government organisations confronting some of humankind’s greatest challenges, including natural disasters.

Whilst eating dinner and after the trivia, people can wander through the exhibition and meet staff and volunteers from emergency service agencies, SES, CFA, Red Cross, DELWP and Victoria Police who can answer questions about preparation for emergencies. At 6pm people will take their tables, to test their knowledge of common emergency preparedness questions and be in the running to win great prizes donated by agencies. Alpine Shire Council Emergency Management Coordinator, Karen van Huizen said ‘this is a more enjoyable way for people to get together and learn from each other and emergency services staff and volunteers rather than sitting in a lecture’. Interested community members can book a table of up to 10 people or for just themselves online at Eventbrite allemergenciestrivia.eventbrite.com by emailing or calling Alpine Shire Council info@alpineshire.vic.gov.au or 03 5755 0555. •
