his weekend saw Round Two of the Victorian Enduro Tour take place at the iconic Big Hill Mountain Bike Park here in Mount Beauty. This year the club had 202 riders on six stages with the tracks ranging from brand spanking new to 25 year old tracks that have been recently resurrected! Team Mount Beauty members have been hard at work over the past few weeks making both the historic and fresh cut tracks ride amazingly well. Saturday was a shuttle practice day with riders very excited to get to use the busses for their track reconnaissance as Big Hill is notoriously steep and unforgiving, both when climbing and descending! Especially since the first stage took place from all the way up at Bench Five running down the historic Big Hill Downhill Track. In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. I then went on to win U19 National Champs in Adelaide (with a time that would have knocked Troy Brosnan off the elite podium). MR: How did you end up travelling and racing alongside Chris Panozzo (2 time Elite Gravity Enduro Australian champion)? Ben: I first met Chris at a Victorian Enduro state round at Barjarg, I was still like Under 15s or Under 17s and I knew that he was a fast dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo. I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. When we got to the top, everyone was wondering where we’d been. He was just like “Ah we’ve just been chilling at the bottom.” So that felt pretty cool. After that he invited me to travel with him to the next round at Narbethong. During that trip we decided not to race any more of the Vic series. I thought that I wouldn’t really continue racing but then Chris invited me to Toowoomba. That was my Ladies Elite Winner Ebony Tanzen in fine form wet. first national race and from then oninwethejust Pic – Matt Rousu became mates and he invited me along to all

NEW BUSINESS IN TOWN With More to Enjoy

I

f you haven’t met the new owners of the Mount Beauty Post Office – would you mind explaining where have you been?

Pierre and Dani took over the business in May this year after making the decision to move away from the corporate world in Melbourne and spend more time with their family. Pierre said moving to the Kiewa Valley and taking over the post office has given them not only the opportunity to have the lifestyle they want for their family, but also a chance to utilise the skills they’ve built up throughout their careers so far. They’ve brought with them both a fresh new direction for the post office, and a new name - Alpine Outfitters. “The new name reflects the new concept for the business; it’s no longer just a post office or gift shop, but an outfitter for your outdoor passions” said Pierre.

Designs for mountain biking, and The North Face gear for outdoor explorers.” They’ve expanded their ladies wear to include brands such as Caroline Morgan and Sndys, and now also stock Smartwool, Ugg Australia and Camelbak - just to name a few. “We’re really excited about bringing even more new brands in the outdoor and fashion space to Mount Beauty in early 2020 - so watch this space,” Pierre said. The new approach for Alpine Outfitters has made shopping locally even easier this Christmas, with gifts to truly suit every age and interest.

Welcome to Pierre at Alpine Outfitters with lots to choose from for this Christmas. Pics - Simone Dowel

In store, you’ll also find plenty of interesting ideas for gifts, including Tea Tonic teas and tools, kombucha and yoghurt making kits, candles, soaps and bath bombs, toys and games, and more - and if you can’t choose, gift vouchers are always a safe choice.

“Mount Beauty, from my point of view, is a playground for almost unlimited outdoor activities, whether it’s mountain biking, road cycling, skiing and snowboarding, bushwalking, fishing or paragliding” he added.

Of course, business is as usual on the post office side of things, where you’ll find Christmas cards and wrapping paper, and the team ready to help you with gift wrapping, packaging and postage to make sure your presents get to where they’re going on time.

“Our idea is to bring in brands that people who engage in these types of activities will use or appreciate - hence we’ve got Yeti coolers and drinkware, which are designed for serious outdoor enthusiasts, Troy Lee

With lay-by available and longer opening hours, there’s no need to leave your Christmas shopping until the last minute; Alpine Outfitters can help you tick off your list with plenty of time to spare.

Do you or someone you know have a print disability?

Excited for their first summer behind the counter, Pierre and Dani said the community has already been a fantastic support during their first six months in business, along with the help of their staff. “Sue and Cheree have continued to be the backbone of the post office, and not forgetting the staff you don’t see so often Peter, Maree and Codi.” Alpine Outfitters; 2a Kiewa Crescent, Mount Beauty. Open Monday to Friday 9am to 5:30pm & Saturday - 9am to 2pm. Ph: 03 5754 4102 •

ENJOY A COLD ONE Crank Handle Brewery Opens

M

icro Breweries have become quite popular in recent years. It has also been a dream of Mick Piera’s for the last 10 years or so. About three years ago this dream began to take shape – as the thought of this persistent driving to Albury (for work) was losing its appeal – and Mick fancied spending more time at home with the family. Then the search for suitable premises was on. Brewing beer was not new to Mick as he had his own little 80 litre brewery at home for years and enjoyed brewing a tasty little drop “just to be social!” Mick (Michael to mother Jenny) Piera grew up in Mount Beauty as one of Jenny and David’s family – with twin brother Brendan and little sis Simone. Wife Kellie and Mick have raised three kids, Jake (25), Cade (23) now working locally as a sparky with Ben Svarc at Altitude Electrical. Daughter Stacey (21) is currently working in the restaurant at Peards Nursery in Wodonga. A couple of years was spent trying to sort premises – until a phone call was received earlier this year – advising that premises were becoming available on the main road in Tawonga South. Then things started to get really serious – the planning got underway and the necessary equipment had to be sourced and ordered. Fortunately – like all good families, as work was required, there was always a family member or two, or three, or four, ready to give a hand – all of which is greatly appreciated said Mick.

Now as we move into the Spring Summer period, a fair-dinkum brewery is taking shape – and the last ten years of travelling to Komatsu to train mechanics is becoming a fading memory.

Remembrance Day Service Armistice Day is on 11th November and is also known as Remembrance Day. It marks the day World War One ended, at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month, back in 1918. And this year is the 101st anniversary. A two-minute silence is held at 11am to remember the people who have died in wars. As in previous years, for this year’s Remembrance Day Service, the Mount Beauty Community Band will be entertaining from about 10:30am prior to the service at the Cenotaph. Then, from 10:45 am a short service will be held. All are welcome. The band will continue with a few numbers after the ceremony also for your enjoyment. As an addition to Remembrance Day and all that it respects, the Mount Beauty Art Group folk have presented some absolutely fantastic decorations in and around the front of Seasons Café and the Mount Beauty Hardware and Drapery. It shows some fabulous art and a wonderfully creative display of poppies. Well worth a few minutes of your time to examine, appreciate and reflect. •

Ultrafox Upper Kiewa Valley Regional Arts is bringing Ultrafox swing band to Mount Beauty on November the 8th. The Mount Beauty Community Centre will start jumping at 8pm to the sounds of this fabulous jazz band. Inspired by the famous manouche jazz swing of the Hot Club of France which featured Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli, this five piece band features acoustic guitars, violin, accordion and double bass. Hot swinging jazz, tender lyrical ballads, French melodies, gypsy waltzes and original compositions will lift the roof. This Friday, November 8th at 8pm in the Mount Beauty Community Centre. Tickets available at Mount Beauty Newsagency, on line at Trybooking, or at the door: $25 adult, $20 Members, $10 students. Our bar will operate from 7:15, at Interval, and post-performance. Further details to Rollo Kiek, Secretary, UKVRA. Ph: 03 5754 1750. •

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Spring 2020 Edition TWO

OUR ENVIRONMENTAL PAGE For Everyone’s Benefit

A

s a service to our community, this paper is seeking environmental/ health/safety tips from the community and publishing them for you’re the benefit of our ever decreasing world. Here are some of this week’s offerings.

A Greener Xmas Brought to you by Lee and Caroline at Gather & Harvest in Hollonds Street. Here are a few simple ideas to make Christmas a little greener. Less really is more. Instead of giving more stuff, give an experience. Some local ideas could be a coffee voucher at a café, a dinner out at one of our lovely restaurants, a ski pass or lessons, a mountain bike shuttle pass or a high country walk and talk. If giving gifts, what about giving some of our fabulous local food or items made locally. Wrap presents in fabric or reusable bags instead of wrapping in paper. Ditch disposable and use reusable plates, serviettes, cutlery, etc. •

Health and Fitness Brought to you by Emily and Lee at Mountain Gym Fitness & Massage. Resistance Training (also known as strength training or weight training), involves moving your body against resistance,

making the movement harder, and can be provided by a number of things, such as: your own body weight, resistance bands, heavier objects that we lift or move daily (boxes, furniture etc), barbells, dumbbells, exercise machines and gravity (maximal jumping and sprinting), just to name a few. Benefits are: • Increase in muscle mass – improving posture control and balance. • Greater bone health. • Reduced risk of developing some of the lifestyle chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and obesity. • Improved psychological well-being. •

Stress Less

Dog Safety Brought to you by Lisa and David at LD’s Pet Care Whilst walking your dog around grassed areas i.e. around the pondage, down to Pebble Beach etc keep your dog on a short lead. This is due to several snake sightings in the past few weeks. I have come across a couple of snakes on the edge of the track round the pondage. Thankfully, the dogs were on short leads and I was able to pull them away from the danger swiftly. Had they been on a longer lead, one of my dogs would have been bitten. •

Brought to you by local Personal Trainer Heather Mull. Feeling stressed? Find a quiet moment and list the thing/s which are making you stressed. Are you worrying about a future scenario that may never happen? Be mindful of ‘Now.’ Consider simple steps you can take to move forward, including considering talking to a friend or specialist. STOP, breathe slowly and deeply, and walk or sit near a river, lake or in another natural setting as often as you can to simply listen to nature’s music. You may find using lavender essential oil and/or drinking an herbal tea like chamomile soothing. •

MISSING BANNERS Three display banners constructed by the Saturday Stitchers in 2004 (16 of them were made) for community events and used by many Kiewa Valley community groups since then. The poles and bags for them have been returned to Upper Kiewa Valley Regional Arts, who lend out these banners, but the actual sewn material banners for ‘Mount Beauty,’ ‘Heath’ and ‘Leaves’ are missing. Please contact Rollo Kiek on 03 5754 1750, or see Penny Goebel at the Neighbourhood Centre, if you can help recover them.

MISSING BOOK A copy of Dr Ruth Lawrence’s Thesis titled ‘The Interaction between the Environment, Land Use and Hydrology of the Bogong High Plains between 1850 and 1985’ was left for this community in the care of Mr Bill Sutton. Bill was happy to lend the book and until now it was always returned – until this last 18 months. This is a valuable piece of the area’s history and we hope this notice may prompt someone’s memory.
