Now is also the time to get to either of our local butchers and order your Christmas hams, pork, seafood or any of their specialty smoked and rolled products. North East Home Improvement Company have their Christmas catalogue out and it is full of great gifts for this time of year. Then we have the fabulous newly stocked Tawonga South Store and Newsagent full to the gunnels with a great range of gifts suitable for all members of the family. Then, as we all know, biking is big in this community and Rocky Valley Bikes have brought in a heap of new bike stock to suit everyone. Road, mountain, kids, E bikes, accessories and clothing. For something different, the team at the Falls Creek Historical Society are offering gift vouchers for their Trails, Tales and Tucker for their guided walks. Check out: www. trailstalesandtucker.com.

The Mount Beauty Visitor Information Centre also has a nice range of locally made products. It may seem a little incongruous for a local to be visiting the Info Centre – but they really do have some quite nice local gifts and books. Other options include Ski Passes, Resort Entry Passes, Gift Vouchers for local restaurants – maybe even a voucher for a gliding lesson – the range is only limited by your imagination. With all this available, at least give our local shops a look before you head into the big, hot sweaty rural city. All the best to everyone for a safe and enjoyable Christmas and a prosperous and healthy new Year. • Ed Visit the

FALL LINES Alpine Quest back for 2020

T

he inaugural Alpine Quest Adventure Race held at Falls Creek in early 2019 was a gruelling, but amazing return of Adventure Racing to the Victorian High Country. Teams of four explored the unique alpine wilderness over a 150 km course as they kayaked the Mitta, mountain biked to Mt Wills and trekked non-stop through the night through valleys and ridges to Bogong Village before riding up to the finish in Falls Creek. Alpine Quest will be back in 2020, with a slightly different format. The Expedition course will retain a two day stage format with a 30 km 6hr prologue on day 1 and a 100 km, 24 hr race on day 2 which requires teams of four. The Explore course will be for teams of two and an overall distance of about 30km to cover over a time period of 6 hours. The Expedition course will take competitors to some remote areas and really test the limits of teams and their ability to work as one.

Course director Surge Kurov said “We had so much fun putting on the first Alpine Quest but wanted to offer an option for both those wanting to race for a long time over difficult terrain and also for the more novice participants wanting to experience the mountain and our amazing sport. Choosing between stages over two days or just one day.” The course is kept a secret until just before the race and teams must navigate their own way to get to the checkpoints using only a map and compass. Training sessions will also be on offer. For more information visit www. alpinequest.com.au •

The Alpine Quest is a great opportunity to tackle the challenges of the Bogong High Plains. Pic - courtesy AQ

The Explore course will be shorter and more geared towards the novice competitors. Think more social, fun, beginner and family friendly in a more familiar environment.
