SUMMER AT FALLS CREEK Something for Everyone
A
s was proudly reported in the last edition of this fine publication, Falls Creek was recently awarded Silver at the RACV 2019 Victorian Tourism Awards. The previous year was Gold and the year before that was Bronze. And while these awards recognise the great job the whole team does in winter, it also is recognition of the fact that summer tourism is growing – and we’re loving it. Journalists are visiting, high profile athletes continue to return to the village and visitors with a diverse range of interests continue to discover just how attractive Falls Creek and the surrounding Bogong High Plains are in summer.
Holiday Season @ Friers!! The Frying Pan is a fun-filled bar & grill in the heart of Falls Creek’s famous Village Bowl Activities: Alfresco dining, Pool table, Foos table, Table tennis, Darts, Bocce, Hooky, Trampoline. Activities in the Village Bowl: Pump track, Tennis, Mountain biking, walking/hiking.
Also, as mentioned elsewhere in the paper, the village roads are closed to traffic until 8am Monday 6th January. You can drive into the village and unload, but you are then asked to take your vehicle out of the village and park it in the normal carparks – as you would in winter. This creates a wonderful ambience and enables visitors, families and kids to stroll around the village in peace and safety – making for a much improved holiday experience.
single track from beginner area out in the Nordic Bowl called ‘Short Circuit,’ with ‘Induction’ to bring you back to the Trail Head at the Café and Carpark in Slalom Plaza.
Mountain Biking
Bike Hire is available in the village in Slalom Plaza and also at Frueauf Village behind Milch Café Restaurant.
In recent summers the mountain biking has gone berserk and mountain bikers have travelled from all over the state to experience our trails – which are rated as some of the best in the state. They link up well, they are easily accessed - to and from the village and there is a simple progression from beginner to experienced. And when you do stop for a breather, there is all this fabulous scenery to behold. Falls Creek now boasts in excess of 44km of

SUMMER HOLIDAYS In the Kiewa Valley
S
ummer is a time we love. The kids are on holidays, the visitors have arrived and everything is rolling along nicely. Isn’t it great when the biggest problem we have is that our supermarket is busier than normal – or we can’t find a park right outside the shop we want to visit. Build a bridge! There are loads of fun things to do in the lead up to Christmas and during the holidays. Take a moment to enjoy them all. Let’s have a look shall we?
Christmas Lights There are quite a few houses in town where the owners have done a brilliant job of putting up a wonderful display of Christmas Lights. Well done to all those people – and thankyou for exercising

Live Entertainment A great family nigh out is assured for New Year’s Eve at the Mount Beauty United Cricket Club rooms and sports ground. They have live entertainment sorted, starting at around 6pm and will culminate – welcoming in the New Year with some great music! Refer article Page three of this publication. •

Fishing It’s just one of those peaceful activities that can be enjoyed on your own or with the kids. The rivers are all good and the Pondage has trout and some ‘reddies.’ When you are sneaking around the waterways just be aware - there are Joe Blakes in that there bush. Fishing rods, gear and licences are available from Rocky Valley Bikes and Sports in Tawonga South. •
Tennis Mount Beauty Tennis Club is open all year round for fee paying tennis players. Court Hire is $10 per hour. If there are people waiting, you are asked to keep your play to an hour at a time. Further details from 0400 350 488. •

Mountain Biking The fabulous team at Team Mount Beauty have spent many years creating and cultivating ripper tracks in the Big Hill Mountain Bike Park. One feather in their cap is that the club hosted the National Mountain Bike Championships in February 2000, prior to Australia hosting the Olympics in September 2000. One of our respected members got the gig of building the XC Mountain Bike course for the Sydney Olympics. (We do have some credibility). The club are now in the process of producing a snazzy new colour map of the trails and they will be available from Rocky Valley Bikes, Sweetwater Brewery and The Info Centre for a gold con donation. •

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK - Summer 2020 Edition FIVE
FALL LINES A Christmas Message The festive season is a religious holiday but is also a time for family and friends. For many it’s the one chance each year to catchup with others who also make the annual pilgrimage home. Make the most of your time together. If you are travelling, drive safely, take care and use the rest stops along the way. At this time of year, towns like Mount Beauty and Falls Creek will be full of tourists – some who are regular visitors and others discovering the North East for the first time. Make them welcome, to ensure they come back. I’m an unabashed fan of the North East, an unabashed fan of the Kiewa Valley but I also recognise that we face ongoing challenges. Feral pests, particularly deer, are an increasing threat on the roads, in alpine parks, farms and increasingly in towns. I’m acutely aware of the cost and red tape facing Falls Creek businesses, whether you are digging a hole with a shovel or planning a major project. I also know how tough some of those mountain bike trails are after a semi-guided tour before the snow season.
this summer and there is a valid concern that the lack of fuel reduction burns further heighten the risk of fires in the coming months. Please, take all precautions, know the risks, have a plan. I am at my best when lobbying on your behalf and I want you to call, email or even send a Facebook message if you have issues where I can help. Have a wonderful holiday season and drive safely. • Bill Tilley MLA. Member for Benambra
Shopping Locally There are many, many good solid common sense reasons to shop locally – and this paper has touched on all of them before. And in the true Christmas Spirit, I would like to say thank you to everyone who has supported – and continues to support our local businesses. It is greatly appreciated. In a previous edition, Christmas Shopping locally was mentioned, and this item would expand upon that handy knowledge.

Then, of course we have that great range of Christmas treats at the Mount Beauty Bakery. Stölen, Ginger Bread Houses and many other delectable treats. Call in and browse. If your Ed has missed anyone, please accept this apology. He would like to be everywhere all of the time – but he is not superman – despite what others say. A sincere wish to everyone for the best for Christmas and for a prosperous and healthy New Year. See you in 2020! Ed

HUMAN POWERED VEHICLE TEAM Excellent Effort
T
he Mount Beauty Secondary College Human Powered Vehicle Team competed in the 2019 Energy Breakthrough competition November 20th – 24th in Maryborough. The team competed extremely well across the track events which is comprised of a time trial, obstacle course and an eight hour endurance race. The team also presented very well during the off-track component that consists of a presentation to a series of judges regarding the overall team focus of renewable energy, trike construction, and safety. Some early highlights included the glowing report from the judging panel for ‘Bogong Beast’s’ presentation, and having all three trikes in the top 20 (out of 60 teams) on the grid for Saturday’s main event, the eight hour endurance race. After completing all stages of the competition, we managed to have all three teams finish in the top eight of their category. Our all-female team, ‘MB Lightning’, came 3rd; our mixed Yr 7 & 8 team, ‘Bogong Beast’ came 5th; and our all boys team, ‘Cranky Charlie II’, came 8th. An absolutely outstanding achievement!
However, it was the main event where our Teams shined. In the eight hour endurance event, our all-boys team and our all-girls team (who came second overall) were both in first place out of all public schools racing (only the representative factory teams finished ahead of us), and our mixed team consisting of 4 girls and 4 boys from years 7 & 8 came second out of all of the public schools! Each of the students involved loved their experience and there is no doubt about their enthusiasm when they are talking about the 2019 event!
What The Students Said… • The Energy Breakthrough experience was amazing. The atmosphere, the races, everything! I can’t wait for next year. • It was amazing and would recommend it to everyone. I’m glad I went. • Really grateful that I got to experience such a unique event. This trip was very fun and exciting to watch and participate in. • One of my favourite school experiences! • One of the coolest things I have ever done! It’s such a huge event.

What The Parents Said... • What an awesome experience and great weekend. • It was a great weekend and was good to see everyone working so well together. • It was great to see how the students worked together in the weeks/months leading up to the event and then again over the weekend to overcome various obstacles and challenges. Not only with the trikes. They all showed really great resilience and teamwork to support each other throughout the event, particularly when faced with mechanical gremlins. They (including the students who helped out leading up the event, but couldn’t make it to Maryborough) should be all extremely proud of their achievements. Speaking on behalf of my son, I know from the very mention of this event he was beyond excitement with the thought of being able to join a team and be part of the process. I believe that he and several other students will take away some key learnings from the event and in turn be great advocates for what the program can do for individual students and the school as a whole.
